Liverpool make it to the Champions League final – with a touch of stress – but their key assets are fast losing Fantasy appeal regardless.

An extraordinary semi-final tie with Roma was, to all intents and purposes, won in the first leg, with the result confirmed early in the second, thanks to away goals from Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum.

That didn’t stop the match finishing 4-2 to the Italians, and the aggregate score reading 7-6 to the Reds, as a last-minute (and incredibly harsh) penalty decision given for a handball by substitute Ragnar Klavan kept the contest captivating to its final seconds.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will now face Real Madrid in the final, a full 13 days after the end of the domestic season.

That mini-break, and the fact that Liverpool are yet to nail down Champions League football for next season, should keep rotation off Klopp’s agenda.

But the team’s lack of a Double Gameweek 37 means many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already seen enough.

Their two most popular players, Mohamed Salah (57.6%) and Roberto Firmino (37.0%), are the top two transfers-out heading into the penultimate Gameweek of the season, with a combined quarter of a million owners selling the pair on.

Neither impressed in Rome last night, with Firmino unusually profligate in possession, although he did set up Mane’s opener.

As for Salah, he was frequently caught offside and gave the impression of a man trying too hard to add to his 43 goals for the season.

The Egyptian has now gone scoreless in back-to-back matches for only the second time since the middle of October.

He’s failed to score in three straight matches just the once, and Sunday’s trip to Chelsea will be a tough fixture to avoid a repeat of that run.

Klopp has consistently stated that he will not rotate his side unduly until a top-four finish is confirmed, and he maintained that stance even in the immediate aftermath of last night’s result.

“Chelsea at the weekend is an unbelievably important game for us. I give the boys tonight; it’s cool, they don’t drink alcohol, but they will stay a little bit longer awake and then we recover tomorrow…We have two very important Premier League games then let’s go there (the final) and try our best.”

That doesn’t look like being enough to stem sales in the pair or, indeed, other key members of the side.

Left-back Andrew Robertson, who had an excellent match in Rome, is in the top four for transfers out, with Mane at six and both Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also in the top 30.

The young right-back, in particular, had a tough time of it in Rome, though with Joe Gomez sidelined and Nathanial Clyne still edging back to fitness, Alexander-Arnold will still be expected to be on duty at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool’s superior goal difference means that a draw with Chelsea will effectively guarantee them Champions League football for next season, which would make Gameweek 38’s home match with Brighton a dead rubber.

Fantasy managers are clearly not keen to wait that long, with Double Gameweek 37 players from both Manchester clubs, Spurs and, pending tonight’s Europa League result, Arsenal offering more clear-cut points potential than Klopp’s troops.

Those unwilling, or unable, to sell on their Liverpool assets can at least find some comfort in Chelsea’s poor defensive record of late.

The Blues’ clean sheet at Swansea City in Gameweek 36 was their first in eight league matches, and they haven’t managed a home shut-out since Gameweek 27.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have failed to score away from home only three times – and in six league matches in total – all season, although two of those blanks have come in the past four Gameweeks.

      a. Vert/Smalling/Davies
      b. Tadic for a punt (not much in that bracket, but for 0.1 more you could get Ramsey if out of Europe or Arnie for 7.0
      c. J Ayew. Or Austin if he starts

@ Deulofail, I can only be serious on even pages. Now is the time. I wouldn't risk Young - he's OOP in reverse (POO) and as you say there is no reason for Mourinho not to give Shaw a chance.

    1. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

      Haha!

But in all seriousness, I own Young. I've been looking at ways to avoid playing him, but now I'm considering whether it would be worth playing him (because my main reason for avoiding him was that I was worried about playing time).

      "Poop!"

Actually, I say on the other page that I wonder if there's any reason for Mourinho to play Shaw at all.

I suppose he could rest Young him in Thursday's game to ensure he's good for the last game of the season.

If you own him and you're chasing it's worth a punt I suppose. The cup final might play a part - Jose might want to keep his best team in shape and in tune with each other.

      On the email.
Really hope Klopp doesn't see Karius as #1. There's so many mistakes in him, even two major ones last night.
Do you not see Pope as an option?
Out of the two main defenders you'd like to see, I'd love Koulibaly, can see him being at Liverpool for years.
I'm pretty much stumped on the CDM position, although I've been loving what Neves has been doing this season.
Watched Zielinski recently and he only had an average game, shame the season is coming to an end as I'd love to watch him a bit more.
With regards to Sessegnon, I swear Spurs had pre-signed him a few months ago.
I don't think Dzeko would suit us in all honesty. Great player and having a fantastic couple of seasons at Roma, but at 32, he's not a Klopp kind of signing.
      Great to see Firmino sign.

Yep, either replace Karius with a clear world class keeper or just get an experienced figure to nurture him.

Pope would cost a lot more than he's worth, and isn't good enough for us IMO.

Koulibaly would be my no.1 defensive target.

Zielinski is awesome, hopefully you get to watch him more.

        Agreed on Dzeko, won't happen.

If I'm unlikely to catch the leaders in my cash ML (i'm in 4th with an 83 pts spread between me and 1st), and so concentrating on OR gains, am I best to swallow my pride and get in Kane as damage control?

    Would be -8pts for:
    Vardy, Son > Kane, Fernandinho

    Current team:
    DDG
    Vert, Smalling, Mustafi
    Salah, Sterling, Eriksen, Son
    Jesus (C), Vardy, Ayew

Is 'no Kane as a differential' barmy logic at this stage?

    1. RAFA THE GAFFA

Just go Kane-less and captain Jesus

      1. Don Kloppeone
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 10 months ago

        That's where I am currently

In fact just doing some numbers, in worst case scenario where Vardy plays both but blanks and Son plays one but blanks (=9 points total), Kane and Fernandinho would need to bring in more than 17 points to make it worth the transfer.

Reality is Son and Vardy will hopefully score higher than that so I may have just talked myself into sticking Kane-less!

I'm also Kaneless (have Lukaku and Jesus). With no City mids either I think I'm committed to a hit in any case, but getting Kane in means either a big hit or no Sterling and hoping one of Mahrez, Son or Willian finally give me something.

important decisions with so many ML in the balance

    Ddg — Ryan
Smalling Maguire alonso Cedric — lowton
Son pogba willian mahrez — king
    Kane Jesus --- barnes

    A: mahrez > sterling
    B: mahrez + willian >> sterling + arnie/ramsey (-4)
    C: cedric + mahrez >> danilo + sane (-4)
D: Maguire + willian >> VDH + Sane (-4)...allows me to keep mahrez and hence easier upgrade to Salah in gw38. In all other options, the only way I can see of getting salah in gw38 is by upgrading sterling.

My two rivals (20 and 50 points behind) have Sane and I don't. Do I:

    A. Ignore Sane and only take a 4 point hit, swapping Mahrez and Vardy for Arnautovic and Jesus.

    B. Cover Sane and take an 8 point hit, swapping Mahrez, Vardy and Gross for Sane, Jesus and a 4.7m mid?

Cheers - yeah think you're right as Sterling and Jesus should be ample City cover.

How about these transfers for -8?? Need some suggestion

    Vardy/ Willian/ Lingard/ Morgan>> Jesus/ Ramsey/ Kenedy/ Mawson

Not sure I would ship Lingard for a hit, but the others look good. Consider Ramsey minutes

Ramsey not guaranteed to play both

What option do ya think is the best??

    A: Alonso, Fernandinho & J.Ayew

    B: VDH, A.King, & Vardy

Tricky! Probably A as Vardy seems off form

1 FT and 2.0 ITB. Is it right to give priority on my DF?

    DDG (Hennessey)
Simpson - Mariappa - Tarkowski (Lowton, Long)
Eriksen - Son - Sane - Sterling (King)
    Kane - Jesus - Vardy

What option would you suggest ?

    (a) Tarkow -> Smalling ... double United with DDG
    (b) Long -> Mawson ... Swansea have to fight and he has some attacking threat

    1. #Swish41
      • 15 Years

A, as Smalling is way better than Mawson

Hi all. Testing this on a new crowd. 3pts separate top 3 (squeaky bum time)!! This is my bag (not great):

    DDG
    Morgan Christensen Duffy
    Salah Lingard Sterling Willian
    Jesus (TC) Kane Vardy

Need something bold I feel so thinking:

    Willian, Duffy, Salah >

    1. Sane, Pogba, Davies
    2. Sane, Alli, Van Der Hoorn
    3. Eriksen, Pogba, Naughton
    4. Eriksen, DSilva, VDH

What do you reckon?..or should I trust Willian and focus on another defender?

Collins dictionary definition may help = "the tense final matches in the race to a league championship, esp from the point of view of the leaders"
