One of Double Gameweek 37’s key players becomes another victim of West Brom’s unlikely survival bid as Spurs go down 1-0 at The Hawthorns.

Harry Kane went into the match as the most popular captain pick, with the backing of over a million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers and 54 of the game’s top 100 owners.

Some 190,567 (49.3%) of the 385,000+ Triple Captain chips in play were also placed on the Spurs striker, only for a meagre two points to result.

After a couple of low-key performances from which he’d scraped by with two tap-ins, today’s match was at least a busier one for the 37.5%-owned forward.

He had five shots, all in the box, including one effort which was denied by the heroic Ben Foster’s head in the first half. No player has had more attempts in the Gameweek so far but there are no points for shots, as those backing Gabriel Jesus with the captaincy will gleefully point out.

But things could have been a lot worse for Kane’s backers as he came perilously close to scoring an own goal, with Hugo Lloris forced into a miraculous clawing stop to prevent major angst among Fantasy managers.

Spurs’ form has been on the slide since their FA Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of Man United, with a win, loss and a draw from the subsequent three league matches, while Kane now has just two goals and an assist in eight Gameweeks.

That hadn’t stopped 171,907 managers making him the third most purchased player, behind Man City duo Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, heading into Double Gameweek 37.

The striker’s output at home to Newcastle now looks crucial to the outcome of mini-leagues and, indeed, the FPL crown.

But those hoping for a bumper haul to justify their Triple Captain call will be concerned that Kane has managed just one double-figure score in 13 outings now.

That’s a chilling thought for Kane’s supporters ahead of Man City’s meeting with Huddersfield Town, as Jesus and Sterling go into that match backed by 277,000+ and 264,000+ captaincies.

More significantly, they combine to make up over 144,000 of the Triple Captain chips in play.

Good and bad news at the back

Three Spurs defenders – Ben Davies, Kieran Trippier and Jan Vertonghen – were in the top 20 transfers-in for the double as managers hoped Mauricio Pochettino’s side would build on last weekend’s clean sheet against Watford.

Jake Livermore’s last-gasp winner put paid to that, although Vertonghen’s 10.0% ownership were fortuitous when their man was withdrawn before the goal, thus securing him points from a shutout.

But every silver lining needs a cloud, and the Belgian’s 84th-minute withdrawal with an ankle injury makes him an early doubt for Wednesday’s visit from Newcastle.

Mauricio Pochettino was unclear when asked post-match whether he had an idea on the severity of the setback.

“Not yet. We will have to wait until Monday. He twisted his ankle. Hopefully it’s not a big issue.”

At least he saw plentiful pitch-time. The team’s most popular defender, Davies (22.4%), was benched for Danny Rose as Pochettino reverted to a 3-4-2-1 in which Toby Alderweireld joined Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez in the back three.

Right wing-back Trippier, meanwhile, retained his place as Serge Aurier missed out with a hamstring issue.

Davies’ 1.3 million owners weren’t the only ones to fall foul of Pochettino’s tinkering as the 14.7%-owned Son Heung-min was another to drop to the bench, with Erik Lamela replacing him in midfield.

Should Chelsea beat Liverpool tomorrow and close the gap to a top-four place to just two points, Spurs’ recent decline means their midweek match with Newcastle could have much riding on it.

The Magpies will have considerably less to play for than West Brom did today, with any number of Fantasy managers hoping Spurs’ second bite of the Gameweek 37 cherry bears a lot more Fantasy fruit.

As for the Baggies, Everton’s last-second equaliser against Southampton keeps them in the Premier League. For now.

A Gameweek 38 trip to Crystal Palace doesn’t exactly inspire investment, although their backline has now kept three clean sheets in four battling matches.

It’ll be interesting, how much was Hazard the season they smashed the league and how much was he when they finished 10th and the year after that?

That's more in line with what he's worth. 12.5 was much too high I can't believe so many had him all season at that price

Don’t agree. In this supposedly “poor” season hes still accrued 26 (technically 27) goals. I won’t be surprised he ends up on 30. So past three seasons he’s got 25, 29, and 27 minimum.

        Pure 24 carat fantasy gold.

What matters is points. His teammate Eriksen has just as many costs 9.5 and in the forward positioj Firmino almost as many at 8.5. Kane has 199 points this season certainly not worth 12.5 when he's 4th in points and 100 points behind the leader

Well, do you think Firmino will be 8.5 or Salah will be 10 (or even 12) next season?

Firmino should be almost the same price as Kane as he produces almost as many points. 10-10.5. Salah should be atleast 13m given his record breaking season

Depends on when you own him. Hasn't scored a goal in something like 17 of 36 matches so there's big inconsistency.

Another thing not mentioned is his assist record which is crap this year. So while he's scored 26 goals, his overall involvement has lead to 28 goals (2 assists). Guys like Firmino have scored far fewer goals (15) but when you take assists into account he's involved directly in 23 goals. Aguero on 21 scored and 6 assists puts him right up there with Kane for overall involvement too. Given that assists are worth just one point less than a goal, they're really quite important and Kane's numbers are woeful for his price.

      • 9 Years

He's just 27 points behind last seasons points with two games to go. Surely it depends on overall points, not the amount of blanks or how much of a "troll" he has been. Hazards points have always been hard to predict too but he is always top 3 most expensive midfielder. 12.0-12.5 imo.

There's much greater competition this year. He's overpriced when Salah, KDB and Sterling are all ahead of him for far cheaper. His points to price ratio is not very good

          • 9 Years

True, but premium midfielders have always been cheaper than premium forwards. Would be interesting to see how it affects the captaincy decision if there wouldnt be a difference in price.

Well he hasn't even been the best striker captain option as Aguero has 34 less points but missed over a third of the season he's the best option when healthy. When not fit then it's still Jesus over Kane upfront.

Mind it's all pretty mute when Salah crushed everyone by so much best to just leave the captaincy on him no need for Kane.

He's still got 26G2A from 32 starts and 3 sub appearances though for 199pts.....pretty solid even with all of his blanks?

Trying to catch 35 points..impossible i know but need to try atleast

    Ddg - Ryan
Smalling Alonso Lowton -- Maguire Cedric
Son Pogba Sterling Arnie -- King
    Kane Barnes Jesus

    A: Arnie >> Zaha
B: Maguire + Sterling >> Masauku + Salah (-4) but then relying on cedric as i think one of smalling/alonso will be rested
    C: Alonso + Arnie >> TAA + Mane (-4)

This may be a really stupid question but my brain is frazzled by newborn-induced sleep deprivation.

Stoke are 3 points behind Southampton, who are 17th, with one game left. How are they definitely relegated then? They could stay up on goal difference if everything goes their way?

Huddersfield who're playing 3 awful games, will be stuck on 35pts and will have worse goal difference after the hammerings to come?

Huddersfield are in more danger than Swansea or Southampton arguably.

This requires Southampton and Swansea to draw and then both to lose their last games (Vs City and stk respectively) and West Brom to win vs cpl. Then Stoke Southampton and Swansea go down. Could well happen makes the Southampton Vs Swansea game the biggest of the season

Of course, World Cups are exciting but Russia does not deserve to host it given their track record of racially abusing black players and general xenophobia......I live in Thailand now and you should see how some of them act here....

    4. Piggs Boson

I think he played 3 at the back so he could keep both wingbacks high at once. Needed to stretch out the tight Baggies defence.

To be fair, they had 18 shots and 74% possession. But unfortunately for Spurs, Darren Moore appears to possess magical powers.

Poch's in-game management is poor. Has cost them games against City, Juventus and Utd this season. He needs some impact players to replace Sissoko, Wanayama, Llorente and Lamela. He makes the same subs every match - Wanayama on for Dembele (or vice versa), Lamela on for Son (or vice versa) and Sissoko / Llorente on for Dier.

He needs players like Martial, Zaha, Izquierdo, Shaqiri to make an impact off the bench IMO

He seems to have a strong sense of entitlement.

I'd wager his goal grab was bad for morale as it's just not done that way. You don't go to that length to steal a goal away from an arguably better player even if you are a striker.

content to have got over 2000 points for the 10th season running, but a shocking season ,190k overall ,the team ive relied on far too much was Chelsea ,oh dear they have been crap really missing costa, but as is the problem with FF in general you hang on and hang on waiting for the good to happen,it rarely does ,ill be back in 3 months difficult to dump it altogether ,its like some scutter weve all been out with ,there can be some good times...
