Double Gameweek 37 continues to surprise and deflate as a resolute Huddersfield Town hold out for an unlikely 0-0 draw at Manchester City to scupper another set of captaincy plans.

It’s a fairly short journey across the Pennines from West Yorkshire to Greater Manchester, and the team coach essentially didn’t stop until it was on the Etihad pitch as manager David Wagner unveiled a 5-3-1-1 formation to try and frustrate the champions’ attacking riches.

The plan worked spectacularly, with City failing to create a single big chance over the 90 minutes.

Huddersfield’s stubborn display delivered another blow for any number of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who had bet the house on City attacking returns.

Those who handed the armband to Spurs’ Harry Kane, or played the Triple Captain chip on him, would have been particularly anxious following the striker’s blank yesterday.

Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling looked primed to teach those managers the error of their ways but ended up with the same minimal output as Kane.

The pair were the two most purchased players for this round of fixtures, brought in by 268,000+ and 199,000+ respectively.

Jesus, who was captained by 5.04% and 32 of the top 100 managers, failed to score for the first time in last five starts. He recorded just two shots on goal, both off target.

Over 75,000 FPL managers also used their Triple Captain chip on him, while Sterling took the armband for 4.79% of FPL managers (including 11 of the top 100) and was the subject of more than 69,000 Triple Captain chips.

Sterling failed to register a single effort on goal and created just one chance for team-mates, recording four touches in the penalty area.

Like Jesus, his form (three goals and seven assists in the previous six) still looks encouraging for the midweek visit of Brighton.

But the worry is that after naming a first-choice XI for the title presentation match, Pep Guardiola might now rest a number of his regulars to turn all those cunning plans into outright disasters.

Sterling and Jesus, along with David Silva and Leroy Sane, were all given the full 90 minutes on Sunday.

The City coach will surely consider Yaya Toure for a starting role given that Wednesday’s fixture will be his last in City colours.

Similarly, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva and even Phil Foden will all be considered for starts against the Seagulls, so we’re now at the mercy – not for the first time – of Guardiola’s penchant for rotation.

At least those who backed the City defence are currently in profit.

Aymeric Laporte was City’s most bought defender for the double, earning 35,000+ new owners, only for Guardiola to end his three-match run in the team by bringing back John Stones to partner Nicolas Otamendi at centre-half.

The Argentinian, with 26.1% ownership, is the most popular defender in FPL and he brought in maximum bonus for a bumper nine-point haul. That took him to 21 bonus points for the season, second only to Cesar Azpilicueta among defenders.

The clean sheet was City’s second in six Gameweeks, which took goalkeeper Ederson to 16 shutouts – one behind David De Gea in the Golden Glove standings.

The stopper looks the most secure starter among the backline for the midweek match, which should cheer his 9.1% ownership on a day of precious little joy further up the pitch.

Huddersfield holding on

A cursory glance at Huddersfield’s final three fixtures (mci che ARS) was all we needed to presume a zero-point return and possible relegation.

And while the side is not out of the mire just yet, the point they laboured for at City means they could lose their last two matches and still survive if results elsewhere go their way.

The wheels on Wagner’s 5-3-1-1 bus didn’t come off today, so it’s highly likely to be driven down to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday and, if required, parked at home to Arsenal for Gameweek 38.

Investing in their backline is not exactly tempting, however, as today’s clean sheet was only their fourth in 15 Gameweeks.

Keeper Jonas Lossl (6.9%) remains their most popular player, but he was benched by 255,000+ (more than half his ownership) for the Etihad siege.

His tenth clean sheet of the season is unlikely to persuade many to reinstate him for Gameweek 38, while the Terrier’s lack of goals – just two in eight Gameweeks now – means that Wagner’s side remains a no-go.

Kane basically needs a hat-trick against Newcastle to get back into the golden boot race. Then it is a one game shootout between Salah and Kane

I don't see the flood gates opening in that Newcastle side. Having said that, Salah (+ Pool for that matter) has hit some average league form just at the wrong time to close it out.

At least we don’t need to worry about some of the freaky single game week players any more ... maybe the second half of the game week will be better ... doubt it though with a few rotation issues to kick in but at least it is the same for everyone 🙂

Right now I'm chasing around 45 points for 1st and 20 for 2nd. No one will have Salah for last game.

Would you take Kane out (both as Kane) for a hit to get Salah and cap him?

Try to get both, particularly if Kane is in the golden boot race still after the Newcastle game

He’s been chasing the golden boot all season but that hasn’t suddenly turned him into a prolific goal scorer the last few weeks.

Kane clearly is still affected by his injury. He also needs to think about pacing himself for the World Cup this summer.

Personally, I’m tempted to sell him this week as Spurs look gash right now and I still have my FH left. Might get Lacazette or Aubameyang instead, or even Giroud.

Yes, my whole post was about Kane not Salah.

I’ve had Salah since GW1 and he’s going to be the first player In FPL that I’ll have owned for every game of the season.

Kane can go do one as far as I’m concerned.

        This.

Going through the motions with this season now, already thinking about next term and how to apply the lessons learned from this campaign.

Momentum is absolutely vital in this game. Salah had it going into the Watford game (who themselves were on the crest of a slump) but because it wasn’t a DGW I ignored the most obvious TC choice of the season.

At GW34, Kane blanked and then I was: “Damn, I had to go with Lukaku(c).” and then Lukaku blanked too.

Then Kane scored and at the end of the GW:
      Kane 10
      Lukaku 8

This GW, Kane and Jesus both blanked.
I want now Kane to outscore him and other premium players as well.

Morning all, safe to say the dgw has been a massive letdown for most of us but the injuries to arnie and barnes will have a massive impact on my ML...already was struggling to catch up 30 odd points and had planned to bring in salah next gw but no idea what to do now...thoughts?

    Ddg -- Ryan
Lowton Smalling* Alonso* -- Maguire" Cedric"
Pogba Son Sterling Arnie** -- King*
    Kane Jesus Barnes**

    *good chance of rotation
    ** injured
    " horrible fixture

A: Arnie + Barnes >> Zaha + Ayew (-4)..both have good fixtures but means no pool coverage
B: Maguire + Sterling >> TAA + Salah (-4)..as planned. BUT will run the risk of not having 11 starters as arnie/king/barnes wont play and cedric has a horrible fixture..in essence will be playing 5-3-2
    C: Something else?

It’s been brutal so far, but there’s still a round of games to go and anything can happen in them.

For all we know, Kane, Sterling and Jesus could all go ballistic in the next set of games.

Likely they won’t, but no one knows what’s going to happen next so just watch this space.

My season ended ages ago so it really doesn’t matter to me if I fail this GW.

I’m already thinking of how I can learn the lessons from this wretched season to make sure I have a better one next season.

Son (TC) here. Confident since he didnt start last game and this game will have goals. Kane will score if they stop searching him all the time. Out of form definitely but his potential is out of the question. Chelsea to win so Willian could give some points in this game.

Yeah my thoughts too, though worried about the minutes of key players such as Sterling etc .... underwhelming BB saved by Auba and co. Tbh the success of my gw will be measured by Kane's contribution [or not] on Wed.

Even though I have Jesus & Sterling every point they get is a red arrow for me so I’ll certainly be happy if they are benched :p

Let’s hope will have a good end! 😀

Why the hell didn't Bertrand kick the damn ball into the stand or hoof it high?
Easy to say I suppose. Feel a bit for the Saints fans even as a Hammer 🙂

Would wait for Swansea game before getting Ayew. I believe their manager will try sth different since they cant score. Maybe one striker i dont know.

They are worthy to drop imo although i like them more than Saints. Poor management letting Sig and Wil go (started in the previous years with Bony, Michu etc) letting good players go and get no replacements.

Too bad two of the teams i like (together with Norwich) will be in the Championship hope they both go up next year. Swans are slightly ahead of Saints in my liking but both should go down Stoke had way much better roster.

I hope Swansea go. Absolutely dire, bland football.

Other than Shaqiri, though, who did Stoke have? Shawcross is a shadow of himself now and they have absolutely shocking strikers.

If you’re relying on 37 year old Peter Crouch to score the goals to keep you up then you’re asking to be relegated.

Same with WBA and Rondon who is Championship level at best.

That these teams couldn’t finish ahead of a team that came up from The Championship with a negative goal difference is the most shocking indictment of them all.

Dont agree completely. WBA's problem was that the two attacking mids of the three (Morrison, Chadli the other one is Phillips) are injured the whole season. Their starting XI have 4-5 defensive mids.

Stoke had Shaqiri, Choupo, Jese, Diouf, Bauer in January, a pretty good GK, Allen and then Shawcross and Pieters. A squad that should easily play in PL next year. But your points have a sense of truth thats why both are relegated after all.

If, at the start of the season, I told you that Stoke, West Brom and Swansea or Southampton would all go down you’d have rightly suggested medication for me.

These teams started the season with enough experienced players to have handled this season.

None of the promoted teams were particularly scary. Southampton had Charlie Austin yet chose to spend the first half of the season fartassing about with Long and Gabbiadini up front and wondering why they couldn’t score goals.

Swansea are terminal up front and only Fabianski is the reason they’re not already down.

The whole lot of them have been wretched for most of this season and deserve what they get, I’m afraid.

Absolutely. We may have forgotten how good Heaton is since he’s been out so long.

Actually may just go with Hennessey next season as Palace look like they’ll be tight at the back with Hodgson in charge.

Had DDG for most of this season, but not sure if I’m going to pay for a premium keeper next term.

Plenty of Premier League teams looking for a keeper (West Ham being one), plus Wolves surely won't go into the Premiership with Ruddy as sole No1. Nevertheless the future for Burnley is Pope surely you'd think.

Mind you - European football, maybe they will both get games.

At the end of the day I like I thought everyone came on here for ideas and suggestions which you then take away and make your 'own decision. Maybe I'm wrong and should make this season my last for coming on here. The abuse is just so uncalled for

Mini-league lead going into the final week comes down to the following battles:

    ME HIM
    Otamendi Mawson
    Morgan Chilwell
    Davies Trippier
    Eriksen Son
    Willian Lingard
    Kenedy Murray
    Sterling TC Kane TC
    +9

If it’s close to a dead heat going into the final week i’ll be happy. What are he chances? Fancy Willian and Davies to start, but so will Son and Lingard. I suppose it comes down to Kane v Sterling. What do you think?
