Yusuf Sheikh has claimed the Fantasy Premier League crown in the closest and most dramatic title race in memory.

The Tanzanian manager sealed his unlikely victory by six points from Fantasy Football Scout member Paul Gee, with long-time leader Bharat Dhody third.

Yusuf was ranked sixth before Sunday, some 33 points behind Bharat at the top.

As such, we had not included him in our earlier round-up of the top five contenders.

And when Marcos Alonso, Dele Alli and Gabriel Jesus were unexpectedly benched, he must have all but written off his chances of challenging for the crown.

But Yusuf’s final day performance was nothing short of remarkable from start to finish.

His final tally of 93 points was some 23 ahead of Paul in second and, incredibly, surpassed Bharat’s Gameweek total by 41.

A Triple Captain chip undoubtedly played a key role in his late surge as he was the only manager in the top ten to still have a chip remaining.

However, Yusuf’s decision to use this on Mohamed Salah had, initially, looked unwise, given that six other managers in the top ten also captained the Egyptian.

They included both Bharat and Paul.

So while Salah helped Yusuf to a 11-point advantage over that pair, the midfielder was by no means the key player in Sunday’s matches.

It was his differentials who really delivered.

That started with Marcus Rashford, who struck an early goal to hand Yusuf an initial boost. No other manager in the top ten owned the Man United striker.

Salah’s goal was then followed by an assist to help Yusuf gain a further edge via his Triple Captain. However, it was surely Lukasz Fabianski’s penalty save at the Liberty Stadium, just a minute later, that catapulted him into contention.

At that point Paul Gee had established a lead, thanks to clean sheets from Burnley pair Matt Lowton and James Tarkowski.

A goal from Wilfried Zaha – a Gameweek 38 signing for Aaron Ramsey – then re-ignited Yusuf’s charge, before the Clarets conceded at Turf Moor to topple Paul from the summit.

With Fabianski, Rashford and Zaha furthering their role as differentials with bonus points, Yusuf also benefited from DeAndre Yedlin’s clean sheet from his bench as both Alonso and Ben Davies failed to be given minutes.

That ensured victory over Paul by just eight points once the bonus points were confirmed.

With 73 points on the day, the runner-up can count himself unfortunate to miss out when Burnley’s clean sheet points were cruelly lost in the closing stages.

Paul’s decision to sell Alli for Salah proved a canny move, but it was ultimately not enough to fire him to the title, having started Sunday 20 points off the pace.

Meanwhile Bharat – who had led the way since Gameweek 21 – suffered an early blow when the teamsheets were revealed.

He was missing seven players, either with injuries or through being benched.

His decision to sell Mahrez, and not Alli, for Salah might also haunt him. The Algerian’s 13 points would have seen him tied at the top, though total transfers (43 v 41) would have eventually settled it in Yusuf’s favour regardless.

And nobody can deny the new champion his glory.

To produce 93 points on the final day – some 23 more than any other rival in the top ten – is a remarkable achievement, and one deserving of winning the FPL crown.

Congratulations to Yusuf on his win, and to all the challengers who helped to produce such a memorable day.

We hope to have further reaction, including interviews with the top managers, over the next few days.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

One last OR post of this season? The first 3 managers will still get handsome swags / prizes. Guess I'll have to start a fire sale. Selling all 15 players after a 'relegation'. Reminding myself that Hazard is a FPL troll this season (as well as the last season). How much could I get for Pogba or 15 slightly-used home kits? xD

The case in favour of taking hits:

The scouts and other members usually advice us not to take hits, "don't take hits more than -4 if any, you're better off it."

Well, turns out it didn't turn out to be true for Bharat Dody, he played safe, just took a -4 hit knowing the imminent possible rotations, neither went for the gw 38 including Zaha or Auba.

In the end, that decision turned out to be fatal for him, and Yusuf, with all credit to him, took advantage by using differentials like Rashford and Fabianski and emerged at the top.

In my personal case, I took a -16 point hit even when all others here advised me not to.
        Transfers:

        1. Smalling to TAA
        2. Otamendi to PVA (last minute due to rumours of OTA not playing)
        3. Son to Zaha
        4. DDG to Adrian ( Just to save funds)
        5. Jordan Ayew to Aubameyang.

-16 in hits, -2 lost in Ayew,
        42+ gained in returns.

        Difference:
        24+ points.

        Food for thought.

        Hot Topic kindly.

Being conservative with transfers over the course of a season is the single biggest factor in getting a decent overall rank. Generally yountransfer in players for a reason, and it can take 6-8 weeks for them to return. Transferring them out before then is just asking for trouble. Of course there are scenarios where you have injuries, suspensions etc... but outside that, hits are for shits, generally.

My general conscious is that if you have a feeling that a player will perform, just go by the decision and take a hit. No point keeping a team you don't like.

More often than not, those transfers will serve you food rather than blanks.

Completely agree. I made 50+ points over the last two GWs by being aggressive and taking hits to get in big differentials like Zaha, Arni and Aubameyang. The hits all look completely justified now. It's about knowing when to do it and getting the players right, and a bit of luck but they are a viable strategy.

Not so. Let me give you an example. One of team was always taking hits in his first season and did fantastic. I watched his amazing luck. This season it went up the creek and he had a disastrous time. It’s a game of chance - strategies can work or fail, down to what happens on the day. Wish you well.

Agreed. But it's exactly the same for not taking hits and playing safe. It's chance.

So both the strategies having their equal share of chances, I don't see why the former strategy is termed as just 'luck'.

All depends on your team. One reason the guys at the top may have taken few hits is because everything went right for them so the didnt need to.

If your team starting to fall apart and there no wildcard to use a decent hit can work wonders

Because taking hits is generally risky.

Whereas playing safe is, well playing safe.

We often discuss the luck ‘element’ for which the general consensus is around 60%. No matter what you do.

Players. Points. Nothing else matters. Except to enjoy. Good Luck.

My advice is to build a ‘core’ to your team and keep hits to a minimum.

Hits to solve an injury crisis or remove out of favour players = good
Hits to chase last weeks points, or swap like for like = bad

kinda happy with my OR considering little time spent on FPL this season.

Thank you FFS & Everyone for the help. It was fun.

Thank you TM for the LMS (best ever till GW35). This has kept me trying for a good score every week.

How to get over the thought that going TAA over Robertson cost me a Top 5k finish?

You had no luck with that pick. What if TAA outscored Robertson?

I’ll share with you what happened to me.

Did DDG > Karius as I had got no backup GK.

Was wondering wether to do Lowton > PvA (-4) as I was about to slip 100-120 places at OR.

Didn’t take the risk. Both know what PvA did.

Lost 13pts which cost me 290/291 places.

Instead of finishing strong with a green arrow, 459/460 OR, I finished 750 OR.

Ouch it really sucks when stuff like this happens in the final week
At least you finished Top 1k, which is obviously a great season performance. Cheers for that

Finishing the season with a red arrow is so frustrating.

Okay, what's the etiquette on winning a mini league from a local business, they promised a jersey for the winner, last August should I make contact first or wait a little 🙂

Feel free to make contact later today. If the person you’re contacting was in the league as well and you beat them, be very gracious in victory and you’ll get your prize sooner.in other words don’t gloat or be cocky! Speaking from experience here as an organiser or work FPLs for over a decade...

Wait a little, but screenshot the initial promise of a shirt and the final league placings. I am wary of these offers since Spy Bar in Newcastle reneged on such an offer to me a few years back (possibly because they saw the Sunderland badge in my profile).

        Real life for a moment.

How disgusting were Chelsea today? Looking back over this season they have been One club that have been a massive dissapointment. From champions to being very poor, both in play and attitude. Been clear for a while their manager wants to go back home.

Compare with Newcastle, what a fantastic job Rafa has done for them. Given no real money to spend he has performed wonders with that team after a slightly shaky start.

Which clubs have been your biggest surprise? Good or bad?

I Newcastle have been brilliant. Really impressed with the way Huddersfield went about their business in the City and Chelsea games to stay up.
