We are delighted to announce the official launch of the Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it will be out on Thursday, July 26, to plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

And to give you a taste of what you can expect, we’re planning to publish an exclusive extract for newsletter subscribers in the very near future.

            Can’t see it, became a millstone around my neck. I know it was very popular and I enjoyed it for the most part but it was a massive amount of work, and despite plenty of support I had little in the way of help.

            Besides there not much to say about the game now, it pretty much solved, while being ruined by dumb chips. Much preder Fantasy baseball tbh

        Thanks, great effort, although im sure it was not because of my book !! Didnt do me much good this season only managed 18k although season did start to improve rapidly once I closed the blog down.

        Will probably be some interesting debates this summer over formations etc, especially with the winner favourin 352

    Anyone listen to all 3 hours of let's talk FPL last night?

    Andy gave an insight into how much time Last Man Standing takes to do, especially early on in the season.

          Yeah removing hundreds of managers manually is definitely painful, thank you for doing that!

          Just curious, do you think there might be an automatic way for removing managers, with code? I feel like there could be a workaround to try to automate the process, but I am not an admin of any league so can’t find a way to try.

        3. Ragabolly
          • 16 Years

          I wrote a code now that automatically removes myself from different leagues. I am guessing that removing people from a league as an admin will require very similar coding regarding authentication and keeping track of cookies and stuff like that. If you are an admin of any unimportant league and you are willing to remove some managers from it, I can benefit from some testing. Or if you are not, we can ask any member who is an admin in any league who’s willing to share his login with me for some testing, or just wait for next season.
          I am very hopeful we could find a way and save you from such manual process pain and make the LMS a happier experience for you 🙂

    An FPL book!

    "But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair"

    To be honest, I'm not that interested in hearing how Bob won his mini-league by 1pt on the last day. You only need to read the FFS boards for neat stories. I'd rather it was more about the tactical approaches from top managers.

    But still tempted to buy for the interviews with FPL winners and to hear about Mark's methods. Are they the same interviews that are posted as articles at the end of each season?

      Christmas stocking filler. You can drop little hints, like browsing fantasy football websites a few hours a day for 8 years.

      Not too many of those Bob mini-league stories, but there are some eye-opening ones from winners of games other than FPL.
      The interviews are all new, including one with the first ever FPL champion, and a whole heap of other stuff too.
      I'm biased as hell, but I think there should be something for everyone - from Fantasy ignorant to complete obsessive.
      Even the proofreader, who admitted she knew nothing about FF, described it as 'thoroughly entertaining'.

      LB/LW

      Yes, absolutely. He'd be a good FPL option depending on price and position.

      But I doubt he'll be at Fulham much longer, even though he signed a new contract.

          Agreed.

          But Fulham may decide they'd prefer the money to his services.

          They could also arrange a loanback deal, so a big club buys him, but loans him back to Fulham.

    Not optimal, but gives you an idea of what was possible:

    Fabianski (4.5m)
    Azpi (6.5m) - Otamendi (5.5m) - Lascelles (4.5m)
    Salah (9.0m) - Sterling (8.0m) - Mahrez (8.5m) - Eriksen (9.5m) - KDB (10.0m)
    Vardy (8.5m) - Firmino (8.5m)

    Bench = 4.0m GK, 4.5m DEF, 4.0m DEF, 4.5m FWD

    GK = 157 pts
    DEF = 447 pts
    MID = 1,135 pts
    FWD = 364 pts
    Salah(c) = 303 pts

    Total points (assuming no autosubs, Salah permanent captain and no chips) = 2,406pts

      Slightly better:

      Fabianski (4.5m)
      Azpi (6.5m) - Otamendi (5.5m) - Lascelles (4.5m)
      Salah (9.0m) - Sterling (8.0m) - Mahrez (8.5m) - Gross (5.5m) - KDB (10.0m)
      Vardy (8.5m) - Kane (12.5m)

      Bench = 4.0m GK, 4.5m DEF, 4.0m DEF, 4.5m FWD

      GK = 157 pts
      DEF = 447 pts
      MID = 1,100 pts
      FWD = 400 pts
      Salah(c) = 303 pts

        Better still:

        De Gea (5.5m)
        Azpi (6.5m) - Otamendi (5.5m) - Alonso (7.0m)
        Salah (9.0m) - Sterling (8.0m) - KDB (10.0m) - Gross (5.5m) - Eriksen (9.5m)
        Vardy (8.5m) - Firmino (8.5m)

        Bench = 4.0m GK, 4.0m DEF, 4.0m DEF, 4.5m FWD

        GK = 172 pts
        DEF = 496 pts
        MID = 1,104 pts
        FWD = 364 pts
        Salah(c) = 303 pts

        Total points (assuming no autosubs, Salah permanent captain and no chips) = 2,439pts

    Where do you think Wolves and Cardiff City will finish at next season?

      I think Wolves have an excellent chance of staying up. Cardiff will struggle.

      A lot of crap stayed up this season though so promoted clubs have a better chance than normal.

        Didn't watch a lot of Cardiff's matches, are they really bad and just managed to grind out some matches?

          I think you have to be a decent team to get out of that league.

          I just can't see Warnock and that squad staying up.
