David De Gea has been named the Fantasy Football Scout goalkeeper of the season after winning our recent poll.

The Manchester United man finished 2017/18 with the highest total score among shot stoppers (172 points), while also claiming the Premier League Golden Glove for the first time in his career.

He topped our poll with 49.6% of the votes, edging Burnley’s Nick Pope into second on 33.5%.

De Gea took a very different route to success, compared with last term’s top scoring keeper, Tom Heaton.

While the budget Burnley man hit the summit by combining 10 clean sheets with his dominance of the save count (149) and bonus points (21), De Gea did so as a luxury asset whose large number of shutouts and save points ultimately justified a lofty starting price of £5.5m.

The Spaniard’s tally of 18 clean sheets was made all the more impressive considering no other keeper has recorded that many in an FPL season since Joe Hart in 2012/13. It comes as no surprise, then, that De Gea remained the most popular goalkeeper throughout the entire campaign.

On the eve of Gameweek 1 he was in 32.8% of squads thanks to a favourable run of opening fixtures. They faced West Ham, Swansea, Leicester, Stoke, Everton and Crystal Palace in their first seven matches, with De Gea keeping clean sheets in six of them.

He then followed that up by shutting out a ruthless Liverpool attack in Gameweek 8, taking his average points per match for the season thus far to 6.4 – that’s better than Heaton’s most productive run from last season (6.1 points per match between Gameweek 16 and 23).

He earned a first price rise in Gameweek 7 before jumping to £5.7m in Gameweek 11 on the back of shutting out Tottenham Hotspur and an in-form Harry Kane in Gameweek 10. There was no clean sheet for De Gea when United visited Chelsea but an impressive individual display, with Newcastle at home coming up in Gameweek 12, triggered another increase in cost.

A penalty stop and 14 saves in a 3-1 away win at Arsenal in Gameweek 15 – a joint Premier League record – was another highlight in De Gea’s season.

Bizarrely, though, despite such heroics, the Red Devils’ number one failed to make a single appearance in the Dream Team in any Gameweek last season.

Backing up De Gea’s success was an incredible save percentage (82.1%), higher than any other goalkeeper.

Put into perspective, his total of 116 saves – ranked sixth best in the top-flight – was double the number of Man City’s Ederson (58), who was second only to the Spaniard for both clean sheets (16) and FPL points (158) between the posts.

De Gea also ranked highest for expected goals saved with 11.7. Across the season his average of 4.6 points was bettered only by Phil Jones (5.0) among defensive team-mates but the goalkeeper was far more of a mainstay as Jones spent time on the sidelines with injury.

Which gets us to the crux of his appeal this season: consistency. De Gea played every single minute of United’s 2017/18 campaign apart from the final day, when he was rested only after securing the Golden Glove.

The Prospects

De Gea’s success may well force the hands of Fantasy managers when preparing their squads next season.

The conventional wisdom is to start an FPL campaign with two cheaper goalkeepers to rotate and therefore allow greater spending elsewhere. Yet the Spaniard’s consistency, if it can be maintained, may call for FPL managers to give him greater consideration as a “fire and forget” option over the summer.

There’s no doubt, though, that his popularity was helped by the uncertainty surrounding United’s backline regulars. Antonio Valencia – who began at a hefty 6.5 – was the only defensive team-mate to start more than 30 matches, with 31 appearances.

First for clean sheets and second for goals against (28), Jose Mourinho’s defence will again be big targets for the campaign ahead.

Yet if one or two United defenders come in at a similar price to the Spaniard and can offer the same security of pitch-time, the decision around who to invest in may not be quite so straightforward next time around.

In particular, if a hike in price to 6.0 transpires, the value offered in the sub-5.0 category could force a re-think.

In saying that, it should be noted that, despite his premium price tag, De Gea’s value in terms of points per million (29.2) was identical to Heaton’s in 2016/17, when the Clarets’ stopper was the top value player in the game.

May be biased as a Newcastle fan, but I genuinely feel Shelvey offers a long ball game that could be a great tactical change at the end of the match, especially with someone like vardy trying to get onto longer passes

I'm shocked he isn't going. We have so many forwards and so little quality in CM, cannot believe Welbeck has been chosen over Shelvey.

      Who would make way?
Dele, Delph, Dier, Henderson, Lingard, Loftus-Cheek

Delph gives us cover for LWB.
Loftus-Cheek gives us creativity and dribbling through the middle. He's been looking amazing.

    My team would be:

    Pickford
    Walker Jones Stones Young
    Dier Alli Henderson
    Sterling Kane Lingard

    It's a bit... meh isn't it.
Still, we've won nothing with better players and maybe now the pressure is off we will finally perform!

Ligard was only good for united when he was played as a no 10 and given space to run at defences but on the wing he's been crap, hope Southgate knows this.

I don't think our team is too bad at all. It's a bit lacking in galacticos but where has that left us in recent years?

We see time and time again the results that can be achieved by smaller nations taking a group of players who play as a team rather than as individuals with egos to be massaged. This group has been playing together for a while at various levels and seem to get along well - there are no reports of dressing room feuds and cliques.

Besides, what's the yardstick? I can see them getting to the quarters and that's the best we've managed at a major tournament for a couple of decades.

What I don't like in all this Fantasy games others than Fantasy Premier League is that almost all offensive midfielders are classified as strikers and then in midfield you have to choose between the likes of Obi Mikel and Victor Wanyama and in forward you have 100 options. Not fun.

This is really only a problem because you are forced to pick 5 midfielders and a maximum of 3 forwards. I prefer that players like Salah, Ronaldo, Müller and Messi are classified as forwards.

Yeah, this is a major annoyance in the Champions League game. Mane, Firmino, Salah all forwards, and the midfield selection is terrible. Best tactic there is three huge forwards and a big defence and not bother with mids.

  12. CloudSky

This needs to be 5 at the back, 2 holding mids, pace on the wing and in front formation. Vardy over Kane as crazy as that sounds. Kill em with counters and wingbacks. Would probably need Shelvey and Bertie for that though.

      Belgium squad:

      GK: Courtois, Mignolet, Sels
DEF: Meunier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Vermaelen, Denayer, J. Lukaku, Pocognoli
MID: Dendoncker, Dembele, Witsel, Nainggolan, Tielemans, Fellaini, De Bruyne, T. Hazard
FWD: R. Lukaku, Batshuayi, Mertens, E. Hazard, Carrasco

Just oozes potential and talent. Anything below quarterfinals should be considered a massive fail. The biggest liability is the manager.

J Lukaku to play LWB or will he continue to wedge Carrasco in?

Lukaku would be a golden fantasy option if he played

Id imagine Meunier at RWB and Carrasco at LWB. Might switch it up for England.

I’m going to the World Cup and I’m absolutely delighted I didn’t pay all that money to watch Shelvey or Livermore. Pair of donkeys. Unfortunately have to put up with Henderson and his negative football, but you have to take the good with the bad, or the rough with the smooth.

Especially if De Gea is 6.0 next season, i can't look past a juicy 4.5 Dubravka or Fabianski, or maybe even a Burnley keeper again.

Rubbish England squad but you can only work with what you've got. So painful trying to pick a midfield lol. Defend deep and try and hit on counter with pace.

      Pope
      Walker Maguire Jones Rose
      Henderson Dier Delph
      Rashford Vardy Sterling

I think Eriksen may be priced out of being a good pick next season, which makes me sad as he is my favourite mid to have in the team tbh. Great guy, great talent, and much better than Alli.

Don't think his price will rise by more than 0.5m if at all. He scored less points this season than in 16/17.

Still 4th highest scoring mid or something? Can't see a drop happening, although I guess you guys could be right that no rise happens and they cap him at 9.5...
Surely Hazard has to be cheaper than him though, and i can't see Hazard at 9.0 or something

As a United fan I'm not confident in Young, Jones, Rashford and Lingard's inclusion. Rashford is seriously low on confidence due to a lack of game time (thanks Jose) and is making lots of mistakes and poor passing choices right now. Lingard is rubbish against the top teams because they don't give him time to run at them so he struggles to create chances and make shots on goal. Jones is willing to put his body on the line hence he gets injured alot and is still prone to making mistakes, he has also only started 3 EPL games since GW27 and missed so much through injury. Young has made countless defensive mistakes as a LWB and has been saved by United's defensive set up which he won't have in the England set up. Going forward he has done well but defensively Young is a major liability who could easily give away a penalty. Only Lingard has improved all round this season under Jose while Rashford's development has gone backwards and Jones has missed around a third of the season through injury.

Would you take Smalling over Jones then?

Smalling is better in the air than Jones and more of a threat from set pieces. It depends on the balance needed in defence. Maybe Cahill can cover set pieces.

And he simply won't do this. I think he's set on playing wing backs and specifically Young. Probably picking Trippier ahead of TAA.
Then maybe he'll drop Alli and Rashford and bring in Lingard.
