World Cup 2018 – FIFA Budget Options – Attack

After rolling out our guide to the FIFA McDonald’s World Cup 2018 Fantasy game late last week, we then kicked off an assessment of the player list with a look at the budget defensive options.

Next up, we turn our attentions to attack, seeking out the value picks for our midfields and forward lines.

Certainly, with 20 midfielders priced at £8.5 or over, and the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar offering big-hitting armband options at £12.0m apiece, the need to balance our squads with cut-price picks is obvious.

With that in mind, we’ve limited our ceiling at £6.5m for both attacking positions, looking at the secure picks and in-form punts across the eight groups.

Budget Attackers

There’s no doubt that hosts Russia have struggled for a cutting edge ahead of the tournament.

However, given that Thursday’s Group A opener against Saudi Arabia is the only fixture in that Matchday, opting for an early punt could pay off.

Priced at £6.5m, midfielder Aleksey Miranchuk was fielded up front in showdowns with Spain and France in recent fixtures, bagging a goal and assist against the former in a 3-3 draw back in November.

Granted, he’s a bit of a punt, having started just three of their last seven friendlies. But we’ll get the teamsheets in advance of the deadline and he can be easily changed if not in the XI.

Priced at £5.5m, Saudi Arabia’s Taiseer Al Jassam has impressed in recent friendlies.

The central midfielder found the net in Friday’s 2-1 loss to Germany, suggesting he can be a handy enabler for clashes with Russia, Uruguay and Egypt.

Al Jassam is his nation’s number one for set-pieces and produced more shots and key passes than any team-mate.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta has made a late claim for inclusion in the Uruguay first XI.

After starting just one of their qualifying matches, he has been named on the teamsheet in two of their last three friendlies and has a fair share of dead-ball duties. That could be key, as Uruguay scored more goals (11) from set-pieces in qualifying than any other side.

Priced at just £5.5m, De Arrascaeta netted the opener against Uzbekistan last week though, on the downside, he plays as a winger and is listed as a forward in the FIFA game.

Morocco’s Younes Belhanda (£5.5m) arrives at the tournament in fine form.

The central midfielder has found the net in each of their two friendlies against Slovakia and Estonia over the last week, also supplying an assist in the latter fixture.

An opening fixture against Iran, in particular, could bring in the points before testing Group B encounters with Portugal and Spain.

The same can be said for his team-mate Khalid Boutaib (£6.5m), who is likely to lead the line and fired four goals in as many starts during qualifying.

Setting you back just £6.0m, Peru’s Christian Cueva has both set-piece and penalty duties in his favour.

Two of the left winger’s four goals during qualifying arrived via the spot, while he created at least double the number of chances than any team-mate.

Up against Denmark, France and Australia in Group C, the South Americans also have the £5.5m-priced Yoshimar Yotun as a cheaper option. The central midfielder was their top player for assists (four) on the way to Russia.

For the Danes, Pione Sisto and Yussuf Poulsen both cost £6.5m and have scored a goal apiece in the last four friendlies.

However, both are listed as forwards and are likely to play on the flanks.

For Australia, Mile Jedinak (£6.0m) is another player with penalties and set-piece duties to boost his appeal.

Matthew Leckie is identically priced but is listed as a forward, despite being fielded on the flank. He supplied three goals and five assists over qualifying and bagged a brace against Czech Republic last week.

Target man Tomi Juric (£6.5m) matched Jedinak’s tally of six goals as Australia’s joint-top forward in qualifying and looks set to lead the line.

Moving on to Group D, Giovani Lo Celso (£6.0m) has made a big impact on the Argentina set-up in the last few months.

The PSG central midfielder has started five of their recent friendlies, supplying more assists (three) than any team-mate in that run.

He can offer a viable double-up option with one of their big-hitters against Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi comes in at £6.0m and is listed as a forward in the FIFA game.

The Arsenal man has played in central midfield, out wide and up front over the last year for his country, scoring twice against Argentina and firing a recent consolation in a 2-1 loss to England.

Croatia’s Ante Rebic is another reverse out of position option for those prepared to take a punt. Priced at £5.5m, he has started each of their last three friendlies on the flank.

Iceland midfield pair Birkir Bjarnason (£6.5m) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) are also reasonably priced.

The Burnley man – who shares corner kicks with Gylfi Sigurdsson – was their number one for chances created in qualifying and found the net twice.

Alfred Finnbogason is an alternative up front. He was second to Sigurdsson for goals (three) on the way to Russia and has scored in each of their last two friendlies in June.

Switzerland’s Breel Embolo (£6.0m) has started three of their last four friendlies out wide, scoring in a win over Panama in March. Yet again, he is another who is listed as a forward.

For Serbia, midfielders Adem Ljajic (£6.5m) and Filip Kostic (£6.0m) provide mid-price solutions in the attacking midfield roles.

Stationed on the left flank, the latter produced two goals and five assists in qualifying.

Torino’s Ljajic has started the last four in a central support role in a 4-2-3-1 and served up a goal and two assists in a 5-1 weekend win over Bolivia.

The versatile Miguel Layun has featured in central midfield and in a support role during recent friendlies, scoring twice against Iceland back in March.

No Mexico player recorded more assists (three) during qualification (three), with two of those arriving via his share of corner-kick duties.

At £5.5m, he offers a secure starting option for Group F encounters with Germany, South Korea and Sweden.

South Korea captain Ki Sung Yeung (£6.5m) was joint-top scorer in qualification, with the Swansea man netting two goals.

Belgium’s Yannick Carrasco comes in at a reasonable £6.5m but with many will understandably opt for his fellow wing-back Thomas Meunier, who is listed as a defender.

Nonetheless, Carrasco supplied three goals and four assists in qualifying and was runner-up to Romelu Lukaku for shots on goal for Roberto Martinez’s side.

Group G clashes with Tunisia and Panama precede a showdown with England, handing the Red Devils a chance to make the knockout stages with a match to spare.

Anice Badri (£5.5m) arrives in Russia on the back of goals against Portugal and Turkey in two of Tunisia’s last three friendlies. A Round 3 match against Panama, in particular, could prove the in-form midfielder.

With Sadio Mane set for a role up front, Mbaye Niang (£5.5m) and Ismaila Sarr (£5.0m) are expected to take up the flank roles for Senegal.

Both, however, are listed as forwards in FIFA, though they could still appeal as a punt, given that the Group H teams all play in the final Matchday of the three opening Rounds.

Sarr scored against Croatia last Friday, though Niang leads the way for shots and key passes among all team-mates in recent friendlies.

For Colombia, Mateus Uribe has started the last three friendlies on the flank and comes in as a £5.5m midfielder. Carlos Sanchez (£4.5m) started more qualifying matches than any outfield player but the defensive midfielder looks no more than a squad filler, having failed to register any attacking returns.

Midfielders Keisuke Honda and Genki Haraguchi both come in at £6.0m and have started each of Japan’s last three friendlies.

Although Yuya Osako (£6.5m) has started the last two, his country have failed to find the net in either. A clash against Paraguay tomorrow should allow us to get a better indication of Japan’s starting XI for the tournament.

  1. The case for an active bench over Neymar/Messi

I'm going to try and finish the argument of why having an active bench is more important than having Messi/ Neymar.

    1) Daily captaincy changes - you can change your captain every day, seriously depleting the value of owning a £12m player. Even if Messi were to score a hattrick vs Iceland, one of Lukaku, Cavani/ Suarez, Werner, Eriksen, James, Muller could well score 2 or more to rival this, and you can have more captaincy options if you don't have these players.

    2) If they blank, which they likely will in at least one game, then there is nothing to replace that with. This goes for every big hitter on your team - and players blank a lot at World Cups. Having mid priced options with nice fixtures gives you opportunities to make up the points that these big hitters have missed - if you only have big hitters then you have no way of doing this. These are unaffordable for the most part, in having a team with these 12m players and other viable big hitters.

    3) At neither of the last two World Cups has there been a player who scored more than 4 goals in the group stage, or a player that was top scorer in isolation - there will always be another player who has scored as well as these two, the skill is in finding who it's going to be.

    4) Looking at each player seperately - Messi is the only person to score for Argentina since 2016 in official competition. Even then he only scored 7 in 10 in qualifying. This is not the same player as he is at club level, and playing in a very flawed team in a tough group.
Neymar is a brilliant player in a top team, but they play Switzerland gw1, who have kept a CS in 11 of their last 14 matches. He has never scored more than 1 goal in a game for Brazil under Tite - this feat has only happened three times, two braces for Gabriel Jesus and a hattrick for Paulinho. For much less 12m, there will be other players who score as many as him, with an easier first game.

This is the argument as I see it. Thoughts?

Also 5) there is no point having 4.5m fodder - there are no options at this price that're going to get more than 2 points at this WC, why take out 2 points, simply for a guarantee of another 2 points?

      A over B and C then.

      A) Jesus, and three 6.0m mids on bench (currently on Cueva, Lo Celso and Honda)

      B) Naymar, Cueva and two 4.5m mids on bench.

      C) Jesus, James and two 4.5m mids.

Yes - maybe spread out the value to better options, say Cueva, Ziyech and Al-Dawsari.

I agree, but for some reason I've decided to go with Mitrovic, which leaves enough money for me to get either Messi or Neymar without sacrificing elsewhere.

I mostly agree, it's just with midfield pricing the way it is, the extra money spent to gamble on Ziyech/Carrasco/Di Celso etc. over a 4.5 starter doesn't seem worth it.

      Mostly true. Arguments for them:
      1) Easier to pivot OFF them as you can get anyone else with one transfer.
      2) At 12m, one can rotate amongst them. Messi vs Iceland to neymar Vs CRC and then CR7 vs Iran (if not using wc in group stages). In the end you need to find best 11 to score for each round although having a full bench is nice

I think your second point is perhaps not fully thought through, and your first one isn't perfect either - the point of paying 12m is to not have to pivot off them. These are players who can score at any time and I'm not denying that. I don't then see the logic in taking them out for other players when, especially if you're not playing your wildcard, there will likely be far more pressing issues, such as injuries, suspensions or simply the breakout of a cheaper star or failure of one of your other players. Planning for that rotation is going to cause you to miss other important things in your team.

        1. theRealMoneyball

For point one, it's just a reasoning if they got injured, suspended etc. Not to say it's a plan to pivot off them. Just fingers crossed

Yes I agree there will be fire to put out elsewhere in the team if injuries, cards etc occur. Even then, you can downgrade the 12m to do 2 transfers to replace the injury elsewhere. Holding a 9m jesus for example might need you to rip a lot more of your team up because there's no good strikers below 9m

That said, I'm not going with these 12m, just trying to justify the game can be played that way too 🙂

These players are better in latter stages when we know who is firing and who isn't.

Messi playing for a injury ravaged side with only one warm up game

Neymar has just come back from injury

Ronaldo doesn't always perform at big tourneys

      Not even slightly tempted,

    11. Holding Matip

      1) Disagree - if Messi/Neymar/Ronaldo score a hat trick I don't think anyone will switch captains - a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush - I would take the points and be happy with. As long as you have 3/4 captaincy options that is sufficient, the chance of all 4 blanking is low

      2) See 1, if M/N/R blank you should have 3 other players to pick from to fall back on

      3) Having a premium player generally guarantees goals - there are about 12-15 players in the 8-10m bracket who all COULD top score, and as you say picking the right one over someone who is proven is taking more of a risk

      4) Good points. On Neymar scoring 1 a game - if a FPL player was £12m but scored one goal a game (let's say Kane scoring 32+ goals in a season) he would be in the majority of teams. I guess it's a matter of consistently scoring vs being able to match the top 3 for a specific gameweek

      5) Varela and Akanji play in defensively solid teams who could potentially get 2 CSs in the group stages

All entitled to our own opinions, hence why I put it out there. I probably didn't word my first point very well - I meant that there are players who will score the same sort of amount of points as the 12m players each week, but for cheaper and allowing you to have alternatives for when some of them inevitably blank. My 5th point applies to the midfield - I agree that Varela and Akanji are good 4.5m options in defense - I was talking more specifically about attacking options, such as Carlos Sanchez and William Kvist.

        1. Holding Matip

Agree completely, it's a personal point more than anything, I'd rather have Messi who is a consistent and known points scorer over a plethora of player who may match him, picking the right players and at the right time may be an issue i.e. cavani could go first 2 games without a goal > people ship him out > he scores 5 in the next 2

Messi is akin to the Salah of FPL in that he is a consistent source of points

I don't think anyone is going with 4.5 players in midfield when there are good 4.5s in defence - at least they shouldn't be!

Also don't forget this is not a 38 game comp. It's at best 7. It's very likely that someone like Messi gets 6 goals across the comp but only if he goes all the way. Someone else for far less money could get 4 lets say. Is 2 goals worth then the extra 7 mil or whatever? I don't think so.

Agree completely, the issue again is picking the right guy - say 2 people match Messi in goals scored, that's 2/100s of players to pick from, and so your chances of a) picking the right guy b) picking them at the right time drastically dwindle

James in the 2014 world cup "burst" onto the scene, he wasn't a player many were tipping to be one of the top scorers - predicting the right cheaper player to match Messi and Neymar is the issue

With Neymar, I have Isco, James, Muller, Mbappe and Meunier (potential captaincy candidates). So, if you manage your budget well, there is no reason to not get them. They are priced at 12m for a reason. More likely to score even against the big guns.

Great advice, thanks.. I know there is 26 transfers which is alot but was planing on using 8 for round 1 then 9 for round 2 and 9 before round 3 finishes to ensure i get the players in that look like they are qualifying for the knockout stages..

Dont have the extra funds for lukaku which is why I went mertens.. will defo look at your starters for the first game.. any good differentials you think,

Carrasco at 6.5 or Milinkovic-Savic at 7.0 the better midfield option?
Also, what would be the better combination:
              Isco+Werner or Müller+Cavani?

That's true! Both Werner and Cavani looks like good options, but I struggle to find a good balance in midfield. Isco gives 1.0 to play with, which Müller doesn't, of course. But then again, he plays for Germany, who always delivers.

As long as you keep to a standard formation then you're ok...
                Valid Formations:
                5-3-2
                5-2-3
                5-4-1
                4-4-2
                4-3-3
                4-5-1
                3-5-2
                3-4-3

                Manager Substitutions within a Round:

After all matches on a single day have finished and before the next Round of matches start, you can:

Replace any player (unless they were sent off) with one from your bench whose team is yet to play.
Change your captain (if he was not sent off) with a player from your squad whose team is yet to play.
Players who are substituted out will score 0 points. The captain bonus will be lost from your original captain if a new captain is selected. Substitutions and captain changes can't be cancelled once confirmed.
An unlimited number of manager substitutions can be made, although it is not possible to make them after games on the last day of the Round as all fixtures will have been completed.
If a manager substitution or captain change is made, then no automatic substitutions will take place in your team for that Round.

                Automatic Substitutions within a Round:

If no manager substitutions or captain changes are made, automatic substitutions will take place at the end of the Round, after all fixtures for that Round have been completed.
If your goalkeeper plays no part in the Round, then your replacement goalkeeper will be substituted in, if he played in that Round.
If any of your outfield players play no part in a Round, then the game will substitute the inactive player for one of your replacements. This is done by replacing them with your highest priority substitute who did play, and doesn't break the formation rules (e.g. if your starting team has three defenders, a defender can only be replaced by another defender). You can change your substitution priorities on the 'My Team' page.

              Hi all
              I’m doing a Rd1 Bb followed by Rd2 wildcard.

              Smolov Messi Lukaku
              Pavon Ziyech Carrasco
              Mendy Sidibe Godin Meunier
              Akinfev

              Muslera Tagliafico Miranchuk Belhanda

Block owning teams playing weak opponents is the general idea. Anyone have any ideas to improve this I’d be interested.
              Good luck

I used the wrong words. Meza is in the starting lineup in Argentina's training sessions. Di Maria play as a left winger for Argentina. Not 100% sure if it's Meza as a #10 or as a right winger. Messi will be the main man anyway, but Pavon doesn't look likely to start.

Meza looking very likely to start at the moment, but of course it could change.

Both decent options. But it's definitely picking the lesser of two evils. Idowu or Sabaly? Idowu plays earlier, so if he doesn't pull off a miracle clean sheet, is easier to sub out.

Need to upgrade my bench but can to decide who to downgrade from
              First 11. Any suggestions?

              Cavani Jesus Lewandowski
              Jrod Isco Eriksen Cueva
              Godin Danilo Meunier

              Uzoho Mojica Kvist Idowu

Was gonna play 4-3-3 but just realised that will be stuck with the three forwards and be unable to make a tactical substitution!

Pretty sure the rules state that the formation is set for each round of games. So if a forward doesn't score will not be able to change.

              Any comment?

Isco for me with Silva a forward. Iniesta may have minutes managed as well. Isco has some pretty amazing stats for Spain of late from what I have seen

Is it really worth downgrading a player such as Isco to upgrade Sanchez? I honestly can't see Cueva and Belhanda (combo I previously had) rotation veating Isco's score

I don't like that combo either. It would have to be something like Ziyech and Ljajic in order to beat Isco and a 4.5. The problem is Kimmich is so expensive.

Would it even beat Isco and a 4.5? Two players around that price range may end up beating Isco but we're hoghly unlikely to select the right one. Kimmich isn't that expensive given how good Germany are and his attacking potential

It's either werner or no Germany for me. Mueller stats in the league is very average for that lopsided league. Lewa and auba are far ahead, followed by werner quite some distance behind. Mueller is not even in the same sentence.

Fffrog had a point about Mueller. There is enough evidence to suggest he's peaked early in his career
