Our analysis of the Fantasy iTeam game continues now with a look at the player list.

After checking out the rule set ahead of Thursday’s World Cup 2018 opener between Russia and Saudi Arabia, we scour the market for differentials at both ends of the pitch in a two-part series of articles.

First up, then, we focus on defence, assessing the overlooked goalkeepers and defenders who could bring in big returns.

Goalkeepers

A trio of Premier League-based stoppers dominate the ownership between the posts, with David De Gea (23.2%), Hugo Lloris (12%) and Thibaut Courtois (11%) proving very popular picks for our starting XIs.

That leaves a host of low-owned options jostling for attention, with some differential picks among the group favourites.

Willy Caballero – owned by just 2%, Argentina’s back-up keeper is expected to deputise for the injured Sergio Romero.

Caballero started his nation’s recent friendly, a 4-0 win over Haiti, and now looks in the driving seat ahead of Group C encounters with Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria.

Priced at just £5.7m in FiT, Caballero is cheaper than the likes of defensive team-mates Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m, 12.8% owned) and Javier Mascherano (£6.0m) as a route into a defence that conceded 16 times in 18 qualifying matches, the second most resilient record among the South American sides.

Fernando Muslera – the Uruguay number one offers a strong source of clean sheets for Group A showdowns with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Russia.

With Atletico Madrid centre-halves Diego Godin (£6.0m, 11.1% ownership) and Jose Giminez (£5.9m) stationed in front of him, Muslera looks set to continue a fine record that’s delivered four shutouts in five since the qualifiers ended.

Yet he’s owned by just 3.5% of FiT managers, despite boasting a price tag of £5.7m.

David Ospina – Group H fixtures with Japan, Poland and Senegal look encouraging for the Colombian number one.

The only player to start every match in qualifying, the Arsenal stopper (£5.8m) is a secure pick but has persuaded just 1.3% of managers to snap him up.

Colombia make their way to Russia 2018 in fine defensive form, too, with three clean sheets in their last four matches – only France have scored against them of late.

Defenders

Again, there is significant scope for differentials in our defensive set-ups.

Brazil’s Marcelo (30%) and his Real Madrid team-mate, Spain’s Sergio Ramos 20%, are the most popular defenders in FiT, though just behind that duo, Germany trio Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Joshua Kimmich, along with France’s Raphael Varane, all sit between 14-15% ownership.

Victor Moses – the Chelsea wing-back hands us an intriguing out of position prospect for Group D matches with Croatia, Iceland and Argentina.

Listed as a defender in Fantasy iTeam, Moses is mainly utilised wide in a 4-2-3-1 for Nigeria but has recently been stationed up front in a 3-5-2 set-up.

With more goals (three) than any team-mate in the qualifying period, he comes in at £5.8m and has been drafted in by just 3.7% of managers.

Djibril Sidibe – priced at £5.8m, the right-back offers a budget-friendly route into France’s defence compared with team-mates Samuel Umtiti (£6.3m), Varane (£6.2m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m).

Sidibe made more appearances (nine) and kept more clean sheets (six) than any other French defender in qualification and also chipped in with three assists.

A record of two goals and seven assists for Monaco in Ligue 1 last term showcases his attacking potential ahead of Group C matches with Australia, Peru and Denmark.

Yet just 4.1% have currently opted for the forward-thinking full-back.

Kieran Trippier – with Kyle Walker set to feature in central defence under Gareth Southgate, Trippier is expected to take up the right wing-back role.

Although he started just once during the qualifiers, the Spurs defender since appeared in five of England’s six friendlies and looks to have a share of set-pieces, having supplied an assist for Gary Cahill’s recent goal against Nigeria.

No defender supplied more assists than Trippier in the Premier League last season, though just 4.7% of FiT managers are currently on board for Group G showdowns with Tunisia, Panama and Belgium.

Ricardo Rodriguez – three goals, two assists and six clean sheets over nine qualifying appearances underlines the left-back’s potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Two of those efforts arrived via the spot, with Rodriguez the number one penalty-taker for Switzerland.

He also shares corner kicks with Xherdan Shaqiri and was second only to the Stoke playmaker for chances created for the Swiss in qualifying.

Three clean sheet in four recent friendlies shows that Switzerland have maintained that resilience. Spain were the only side to score against them in that run, with Rodriguez scoring his nation’s goal in a 1-1 draw.

Priced at £5.8m, the AC Milan full-back sits in only 1.5% of FiT squads ahead of Group E matches against Brazil, Serbia and Costa Rica.

Andreas Granqvist – another defender with spot-kick duties, the Sweden centre-half scored three penalties during qualification.

Costing £5.5m, Granqvist is owned by mere 0.5% as he prepares for Group F encounters with South Korea, Germany and Mexico.

Also a big threat from set-pieces, he started all 12 of Sweden’s qualifying matches, helping them to seven clean sheets, including a pair of shutouts in the play-offs against Italy.

    9) Day 9 - Will Brazil beat Costa Rica and have the biggest margin of victory of the day? (other matches Nigeria v Iceland and Serbia v Switzerland)
    10) Day 10 - Will Tunisia score against Belgium?
Tiebreaker) Day 11 - What will be the answer to the total number of corners in the England v Panama game, multiplied by the total number of corners in the Poland v Colombia game?

    Hey guys!

Please let me know what you think of my team, going to use Bench Boost first week & Wildcard second game:

    Akinfeev/Schmeichel

    Kolarov, Hakimi, Meunier, Lindelof, Idowu

Ziyech (c), J. Rod, Coutinho, Belhanda, Al Dawsari

    Messi, Mitrovic, Lukaku

Thanks, any advice is much appreciated:)

Cavani, Lukaku, Werner, Mbappe etc are the reasons

4 goals in qualifying, one of the lowest, highish price, France looked awful vs US.

Basically when you have Lukaku, Werner, Lewandowski, Jesus, Cavani all at an even lower price they're better bets.

      1. Pierce34
        • 10 Years

Hmm fair enough, though I wouldn't include Lewandowski in that list - will Poland actually score that many goals compared to France?

        • 17 Years

Strongly disagree, guys like Lukaku and Lewandoski beating up on the likes of Gibraltar and Armenia is rather meaningless. Lewandowski has never even scored in a major tournament.

How's about the fact that Griezmann scored twice as many as anyone at the Euros. Tournaments are a different to animal compared to qualifying and he's shown he can do it.

            1. Pierce34
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 1 month ago

That was my reasoning. It's not like he's past his peak and his major tournament record speaks for itself.

Not saying Griezmann is bad. But for 0.5m more and up against Lukaku, Cavani, Werner, Jesus I think you can pick better.

You think Griezmann is better than any of those accounting for form and fixtures?

Eh he'll bag a few against Senegal. And Lukaku is playing Panama who've conceded like 8 goals in their last 3 games.

I think form is form and those guys are clearly great footballers.

Maybe Lewa not as good as Cavani due to fixtures but it's not that they'll suddenly stop scoring

Personally going with Griezmann, Lukaku and Jesus. Apart from Jesus I don't think there's a better prospect than him for the price.

I'm playing Telegraph but figured I'd throw a McTeam together because why not

    Almuaiouf / Uzoho
    Godin / Miranda / Kimmich / R Rodriguez / Meunier
    Muller / James / Kouyate / Cueva / Hamed (4.5m)
    Jesus / Lukaku / Griezmann

    Any non starters in there?

    According to this source:

    https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/18230298

These are the best CS bets:

    Belgium 71%
    France 70%
    Argentina 65%
    England 64%
    Russia 60%
    Uruguay 58%
    Brazil 58%

My evil plan is to get defenders from all of those and bench boost:

    Alisson - Pickford
    Vertonghen - Varane - Otamendi - M Fernandez - Godin

Then I would WC in round 2

1 - Do you think it can pay off?

2 - Would you get different players from those teams?

3 - Maybe doubling up on Belgium/France to increase my ceiling?

Stupid amount of money to spend on defense.

Can get thar coverage much cheaper. Get Varela, Pavard, Meunier, Danilo and that's 4 fairly cheap.

Final Macca's draft (I think) - any thoughts?

    Navas
    Godin/Hegazy/Kimmich/Ramos

Anyone else opting for Ndiaye from the 5.0 options? Just been looking at stats from all the 5.0 names being thrown around. None are that great (obviously) but Ndiaye looks the best pick. Poland aren't as good defensively as I first thought either. Conceding 6 in their last 5 friendlies against average opposition (bar Chile)

When it comes to last day I don't care if he plays or not. At best you'll be replacing 2 with a 2. Besides, we get lineups for COL - JAP game.

Why get the 5.0 option when he's 4.5?

Yeah I downgraded to him. Two assists in recent friendlies and is a pretty solid 2 points if for some reason I'm completely dead in the water

Guys time is running out and madness keeps growing

    Front 5:
    Neymar 11.5 - Lukaku 8.5 - Werner 7.5
    Modric 7 - Kroos 6 - Cuadrado 7 - Carrasco 7 - Paulinho 5.5

If I change Neymar 11.5 to Jesus 8.5 I can get:

    A) Get James 9.5 instead of Modric 7, Cuadrado 7 or Carrasco 7
    B) Get Eriksen 9 instead of Modric 7, Cuadrado 7, Carrasco 7 or Kroos 6
    C) Get David Silva 8.5 / Isco 8 and Perisic 8.5 instead of Cuadrado 7 /Carrasco 7 and Modric 7
    D) Something else

Assuming the scoring is the same A or B looks good. Don't like Modric or Kroos as fantasy players.

Same plus 1 point at each 5 recovered balls, 1 point at each 2 shots on target, 1 point at 2 blocked shots.
Modric on set pieces and Kroos on set pieces

Maybe B with Eriksen over Modric then? Eriksen offers much more attacking threat and is also on set pieces.

At a guess, I would say France and Peru qualify from Group C and Argentina and Croatia from Group D. I do think Denmark will score more goals than Croatia in the group stages though, irrespective of that prediction. How do you think those groups pan out?

C - France and Peru/Denmark (probably both with 4 points)
D - One of the most difficult predictions for me, Argentina can be a huge upset, I predict a lot of draws in this group with few goals

I agree with your Group D assessment. Only predicting Argentina solely because of Messi, but reckon it's probably the group with the most evenly matched teams.

      De Arraescata

But why? There are soany good forwards to pick from and the mid options mostly suck in this game.

Have Lukaku + Werner think its enough, dont like forwards much.
Without BPS i think defense + mids are best value.

As long as Pavard looks nailed based on Sidibe's injury problem, I think I've now got my GW1 bench boost squad sorted out. 15 players pretty much nailed to play.

    Pickford, Munir
    Kimmich, Meunier, Godin, Danilo, Pavard
    Carrasco, J.Rod, Belhanda, Cueva, Ljajic
    Jesus, Cavani, Lukaku

And yes I know that's not the strongest midfield in the world, but can't see how I can shoehorn in another 8.5-9.5 midfielder without major surgery elsewhere in the side!

Possibly Dalsgaard for a same price swap. Or I'll downgrade Munir to Uzoho, and bring in Tagliafico.

I don't think I'd take out any of Kimmich, Meunier, Godin or Danilo for him, and it'd be too much of a reshuffle to replace Pavard for Trippier. I'm happy with Pickford!

Defence and keepers done, doubt in front line:

    a) Neymar - Werner - Lukaku (I have Paulinho, Carrasco and Kroos)
    b) Jesus - Werner - Lukaku (enabling Eriksen)
    c)
    1. Jesus - Lukaku - Cavani
    2. Jesus - Lukaku - Suarez
    3. Jesus - Lukaku - Griezmann
