Peru and Denmark meet in the third of four matches on a packed Saturday of World Cup action. Kick-off in Saransk is at 5pm.

Selected by 9% of Fantasy managers in the McDonald’s FIFA game, Christian Eriksen (£9.0m) is the most widely owned asset on show in this Group C encounter.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was in scintillating form during World Cup qualification, scoring on 11 occasions and assisting a further three goals.

Eriksen took 71 corner-kicks in qualifying, some 33 more than the second-most active corner taker (Kevin De Bruyne) among UEFA nations.

The fact that Peru conceded more chances from set plays than any other South American or European country during qualification bodes well for Eriksen’s chances of posting a sizeable points haul.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) are owned by 5% and 3% of Fantasy managers respectively: the fact that Denmark have not conceded a single goal in their last four friendly internationals would explain the investment there.

Christian Cueva (£6.0m) is the only Peru player to be owned by more than 1% of those playing McDonald’s FIFA. The penalty-taking attacking midfielder scored on four occasions and assisted as many goals during qualification, with corner-taking duties part of his appeal to Fantasy managers.

Paolo Guerrero (£7.5m), Peru’s all-time top goalscorer, is free to play in Russia this summer following the temporary suspension of his drugs ban.

Guerrero had more headed attempts from set-piece situations in qualifying than any other forward in South America or Europe.

The 1% of Fantasy managers who own the striker will be disappointed to see his name only among the Peru substitutes, however.

Like today’s opponents, Peru’s defence has been in solid form in their five most recent international friendlies, conceding only one goal in that quintet of fixtures (four of which were against teams playing in the 2018 World Cup).

yes I think so to. I convinced myself that it was worth spreading the cash, but players like Meza/Cueva/Pavard/Tagliafico have let me down. Might WC to a front 3 of Costa Suarez Ronaldo

Record of the 7 teams to have the majority of possession in the World Cup games so far:

2 wins, 2 draws, 3 defeats. 7 goals, 12 goals conceded. 8 big chances, 10 big chances conceded.

Average possession for a winning team has been 46.9%, and none of the four teams who had over 60% possession has won a game.

I think it's a symptom of the fact that international football is not at the same standard as top club competition.

The importance of counter-attacking has declined over the past few years in the Champions League (or the proportion of goals scored on the break), as teams have become much more effective at pressing, and guarding better against transitions.

National teams don't have the same cohesion as a unit, coming from time spent on the training ground, so setting up with two banks of four and trying to stay solid can be surprisingly effective against quality opposition - Denmark, Iceland and Australia have shown that pretty well today.

        exactly
this is why i said england should have a burnley defence
        spurs wing backs
alli and dier in midfield feeding kane
it would have been a massacre

        1. Piggs Boson
          • 14 Years
          8 years, 1 day ago

I love our current system. Dier, Alli, Lingard, Sterling are overloading the central midfield and making it easier to pass around, with the wingbacks stretching the defence wide. Control the centre, control the game.
Walker also pushes up from CB sometimes to make it 5 in the centre, and Kane sometimes drops deep making it 6. Love it.

Makes a change from Lampard and Gerrard being the only two and getting out-passed to oblivion.

it really is not bad (keeping emotions in check)
i just think having pope mee tarkowski and ward who know each other inside and out (even though they're not individual as good as what southgate has gone for)
as a unit would have been a safeguard that lets the mids etc feel comfortable belting forward

anyway still optomistic just hope we get germany and not brazil 😛

I don't see Brazil doing much against the Swiss. They're pretty solid at the back. Maybe 1-0 or 2-1 with Neymar possible being the difference maker or maybe another uncommon source.

That being said not really sure what Mueller will give either. Mexico likes to congest the midfield and if he plays further back it will be tough but if he plays more forward like 4 yrs ago then you'd expect him to do better. Plus he has that WC pedigree. Been there done that.

Anyway, my just my pence, tune in tomorrow to see how wrong I am 🙂

I decided to enter a 1GW punt team on Thursday.

Out went Kimmick, Meunier, Danilo to 3 Moroccan's (who all lost CS point to OG), to fund Messi (pissed pen) and Cueva (missed pen) in for Costa (2 goal's) and Carlos Sanchez.

I either need Kimmick, Meunier, Danilio to score 3 OG's each or Carlos Sanchez.to be my savior now !

Here's a new hot topic for us. Do as many "ITK" stats based decisions pay off compared with "casual" fantasy fans choices?

    Stats
    Uruguay CS
    Messi missed penalty
    Cueva missed penalty
    Eriksen assist
    Denmark CS

    Casual
    Salah blank
    Russian CS
    Ronaldo hat-trick
    Suarez + Cavani blank
    Diego Costa?
    Morocco conceding

        "in the know"

We always remember when informed decisions pay off, but the more I play this game, I realise a lot of unexpected scenarios occur. Obviously that's the case otherwise the bookies wouldn't clean up.

I think the balance is difficult. I'm off to an OK start with Muslera, Valera, Djasgaard and Eriksen getting points, and even Meza picking up 4. The casuals in my league keep asking me who all of the above are, other than Eriksen.

They generally built a team around Ronaldo / Messi / Neymar with absolute fodder that they couldn't care less about.

FFS helps for tinkering but leads to overthinking, in my opinion. I debated Cueva for days but in the end decided I fancied Denmark and France to get out of the group so went against him. It's an internal debate casuals never have the fun of!

I want to get Coutinho in for next round because I don’t have a capt for the 22nd (Werner plays the same day as lukaku). Colombia face poland, Jrod out?

Its worth to captain Danilo tomorrow ? I have Neymar too but I think Lukaku will score more than Neymar. And maybe Danilo will get a cs+goal
