Argentina’s opening World Cup fixture against Iceland is all about Lionel Messi (£12.0m), even from a Fantasy perspective.

The Barcelona striker comes into the first match of Group D as the only player above 10 percent ownership.

He is the second most owned forward on McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy, and with good reason. In Argentina’s last six qualifying matches, he was the only one of their players to find the net.

Outside of Messi, on whom the team is very reliant, the next most popular asset is defender Nicolas Otamendi (£6.0m).

Five percent of Fantasy managers have taken interest in Willy Caballero (£5.0m), the number two goalkeeper who was promoted in light of Sergio Romero’s injury.

Argentina’s opponents Iceland have been completely written off from a Fantasy perspective with just three players considered for inclusion in squads.

Midfielders Emil Hallfredsson (£4.5m) and Samuel Fridjonsson (£4.5m) are on three and two percent ownership respectively, but both look like cost-saving signings given that they are not regular first-team players.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m), involved in eight of Iceland’s goals during qualifying, is owned by one percent.

Even though Messi missed, Meza still keeps the assist. Not bad.

More points for a ‘saved pen’ than a goal from a forward. You got to laugh!

Wtf so as big a fan for VAR I am it still relies on the ref not being utter shite. Pointless bringing it into the prem then

      Exactly

    2. Chandler Bing

Yeah, I thought the players get to call it. Could've made another rule of using it once per half. Garbage addition to the game if it still depends on the ref.

    3. Rainer

      That was a joke!

    4. SW6

VAR makes refs worse imo. They're just relying on it and not making any borderline calls. Refs should be decisive and if they get something obviously wrong VAR corrects it. As it is, all he refs and linesmen are (and have been told to) sit on the fence.

If he thought it was a dive why no yellow?

      1. HamezMace
        • 11 Years

Not all countries give yellows for diving, as uniform as we want refereeing to be, different nationalities will do it differently.

Im confused why that one wasn't reviewed, but the France one was earlier?

It's up to the ref to review it so blame him not VAR

      2. HamezMace
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 1 day ago

I’m assuming (and I don’t know for sure) because the ref in the France game wasn’t sure so called for a review. But he was convinced the ARG player dived so didn’t review it. Even know he’s wrong.
