Fantasy managers are keeping faith with several Premier League-based players in the lunchtime encounter between Denmark and Australia.

Christian Eriksen (£9.0m), who registered an assist in the Danes’ 1-0 win over Peru last Saturday, is the most-owned player on show: 9.5% of McDonald’s FIFA managers have the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder in their squads.

Eriksen’s assist potential was evident in that opening-match victory: the Spurs man fired in 11 crosses, delivered seven corner-kicks and created three chances for his team-mates in an admittedly fortuitous success over the unlucky Peruvians.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) excelled in that match, making six saves on his way to a clean-sheet. The Leicester City goalkeeper’s ownership has jumped a couple of percentage points as a result and now stands at 7.5 %.

Andreas Christensen‘s (£5.0m) ownership has also increased after that shut-out, with the Chelsea defender now selected by 4.3% of Fantasy managers.

For Australia, Mathew Ryan‘s (£4.5m) budget price tag and guaranteed minutes have persuaded 1.9% of McDonald’s FIFA managers to invest in the Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper: Ryan is the most-owned Australian player as a result.

With ten penalties being awarded in the World Cup so far – the tournament record is 18 – Fantasy managers are wisely looking towards those players on spot-kick duties for a reliable source of points.

Mile Jedinak (£6.0m) scored from the spot in the Socceroos’ 2-1 defeat to France and his ownership has increased to 1.6% as a consequence: previously, no Australian midfielder or forward had broken the 1% mark. Jedinak’s penalty was, in fact, the only shot on target Australia had in that loss to the French.

Australia’s team is unchanged, while Lasse Schone for the injured William Kvist is Denmark’s only alteration.

Australia XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Risdon, Sainsbury, Milligan, Behich; Jedinak, Mooy; Leckie, Kruse; Rogic, Nabbout
Denmark XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; Dalsgaard, Kjaer, Christensen, Larsen; Schone, Delaney; Eriksen, Poulsen, Sisto; Jorgensen

Why do people blame VAR when it is up to the referee to make the decision after seeing something 10 times - instead of 1 time?

I wonder if a ref will ever watch a VAR replay and not give a penalty. They've probably got it in their mind that when they get told to check they are just going to always award one. Or is the idea that they only get told to check when it is a stonewall pen?

    1. Gnu
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

They will have been well briefed in that a VAR will only be called if a clear mistake/incident has been seen.
In saying that, of course it'll happen and it'll kick off nicely when it does.

      1. SW6
        • 13 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

I am not convinced that the one we've just seen is a stonewall pen though. He is jumping to head the ball, I don't think it is deliberate at all. The ref barely watched the replay, saw it hits his arm and gave a pen without really thinking about it. It may be a penalty but it's not a definite penalty imo.

100% agree, I think that VAR has been called has influenced the refs decision.
Like you I see why it was given but that then brings the questions of 'clear infringement' and consistency.
Have to say, I'm 100% for VAR, mistakes will be made but long term will avoid the shockers that have blighted almost every tournament.

          1. SW6
            • 13 Years
            7 years, 9 months ago

I think VAR could be great but am not convinced if it's being implemented in the best way at the moment. There is a risk it influences a decision in the semifinals or final in a way that is not completely positive. But then maybe a referee can do that too anyway? I would still say that this is the World Cup and should not really be where we are experimenting with VAR.

    2. Hamstergod
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I think they're only told to look when it's going to happen, if you noticed there are situations throughout the game when they wait and nothing happens and he isn't called to look. At least I've seen that in a couple of games.

I also think it's the country they come from, some places give pens for any hit of the arm i.e. USA, others don't. Like you would get a free kick in Spain/Italy for falling over that you wouldn't get in England. Until the world referees the same there will always be arguments. Otherwise everything will be given as pens.

Spewing every time I see VAR. I remember back in the 40s when we used to use leather balls and played on the most uneven fields. When two footed tackles were applauded and when you didn't go home until you were completely covered in mud. The beautiful game has been ruined.

Has it been considered that 2nd place is the goal for England or Belgium? (Based on the following assumptions:)
    - Mexico or Sweden take 4 more points and Germany finish second
    - Brazil win their group

    1st place gets the following:
    Round of 16: Pol/Sen/Jap/Col
    QF: Bra/Ger
(Semi could even be Spain if they come 2nd)

    2nd place however would play:
    Round of 16: Pol/Sen/Jpn/Col
    QF: Mex/Srb/Swz/Swd
    (Semi: Spa/Por group winners, Uru/Rus 2nd, Cro/Arg/Ice group winners, Fra/Den 2nd)

Given most of this will be clear by the time we meet Belgium, will be very interesting to see what happens. I certainly don’t agree with the mantra ‘you’ve got to beat the best to be the best’...

it's certainly come up in some of the coverage i've seen
i'd really hope that england try and win the game, and not settle for 2nd in the group
i think this idea that we need to work out the easiest possible route is a bit pathetic - it's effectively a loser's mentality, saying we have to avoid brazil at all costs. why? because we're scared of losing? if we come up against brazil earlier then so be it, games like that are what the world cup is all about
i also think it piles on pressure to the team if they believe they've got an 'easier' set of games. a world cup quarter final against mexico will still be one of the toughest games england have had in years

You're spot on. if we're were to win 3/3 in the groups the confidence in the team would be huge. No team in unbeatable. I could just as easily picture us losing to Senegal as I could see us beating Germany to be honest.

This system Fit running where you can buy a 4th transfer for cash instead of 'hit' points is making a farce of the game. Instead of a level playing field players are trying to buy their mini leagues for no other purpose other than giving their money away to the organiser. It's supposed to be fun. At least I'm consoled by the fact I'm behind in the rankings to fools that are parted from their cash as opposed to being beaten by skill (& luck!). Does leave a nasty taste that I'm being beaten by mercenaries.. & that FFS are plugging it.

I doubt FFS are plugging it out of the goodness of their heart.

Indeed! Seems to have become part of the leaning towards FFS becoming a corporate venture instead of the forum for like minded players it was originally set out to be. Certainly not going to be buying into the membership this coming season. If I wanted throw my money away I'd head to a bookies.
