Community Round-up: When to stick or twist on World Cup Fantasy captains

The World Cup continues to dominate the Fantasy Football Scout community as we moved into Gameround 2 of the tournament.

The hands-on nature of the captaincy in McDonald’s official FIFA game has shaped discussions once again this week, while managers have been assessing their plans for the deployment of chips.

Elsewhere, there are encouraging signs for some World Cup assets who have yet to find the net, as the latest Community Tables suggest.

THE HOTTEST TOPICS

Argentina’s spectacular capitulation at the hands of Croatia on Thursday night inspired some interesting debate about their appeal in Gameround 3. I asked users what their plans were for their Argentina assets after the defeat, with some preferring to assess Nigeria’s performance against Iceland first, while others are looking to abandon ship completely.

Andy85wsm started an interesting discussion on whether or not there’s room for Lionel Messi to be considered the best player in the world, even if he has no leadership skills. That led to an insightful comparison between him and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Two of the main recurring themes this week have been how to handle World Cup Fantasy captaincy switches and whether or not the introduction of VAR should shape our squads a little more.

With several managers undecided whether to stick or twist on the six points Christian Eriksen registered against Peru and Antoine Griezmann’s eight-point haul in France’s win over Australia, LEGOMANÉ asked users on Sunday morning what their captaincy plans were.

User Karan14 suggested that two attacking returns should be the minimum required of a skipper, while NOQUARTERNT advised caution to those looking to move their captaincy on: “Don’t get greedy, if you’ve already got a goal and an assist- why risk it?”

Those discussions informed a later Hot Topic discussing captaincy plans for Gameround 2 and one on whether or not to stick or twist with Ronaldo’s six points against Morocco.

On the penalties front, I asked users if they’d be happy seeing VAR have a similar impact on FPL and the response was mostly positive, given that several managers have found success in putting spot kick-takers in their World Cup squads.

Toblerone52 added that the introduction of VAR in the Premier League would increase the appeal of often-fouled players such as Wilfried Zaha and Raheem Sterling, although there was criticism for the officials in charge of England’s win over Tunisia where Harry Kane probably should have been awarded two penalties.

There continues to be arguments put forward for the best time to deploy each chip with Bardo9 making the case for a Gameround 3 Wildcard this week. It centred on potential rotation of players who have performed well in their first two matches and helped their nations already bank six points.

In trying to predict the eventual winner of the tournament in Russia, Ludo pointed out the defensive records of former champions. Interesting reading for those using their Wildcard during the Group Stages instead of the knockout rounds.

We asked for your roughs and smooths so far in World Cup Fantasy and discovered that some of you are having a tough time, but we later had an inspiring pep-talk from Deulofail, advising those who have had tough starts to avoid tearing up their squads.

Lastly, we issued Conduct Reminder for comments which is worth making yourself aware of.

COMMUNITY TABLES

Those playing their Wildcards for Gameround 3 of World Cup Fantasy will have great interest in Joe’s latest table entitled ‘World Cup story so far’.

Using data for chances created, corners taken, goal attempts and shots inside the box it can help in predicting goal and assist potential. It has provided some hope for those still waiting for players such as Edinson Cavani (£9.5m), Mathew Leckie (£6.0m) and Isco (£8.5m) to get their first returns of the tournament.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

COMMUNITY TOURNAMENTS

There were no Community Tournament updates this week but do let us know if you want to start one yourself.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Have this team and in need of transfer advice - just the one free. I have absolutely no idea what to do here.

    Muslera Uzohu
    Meunier Kimmich Varela Ignashevic Tagliafico
    Mueller Coutinho Carrasco Meza Thiago*
    Ronaldo Jesus De Arrescaeta*

Im thinking that Thiago and/or De Arrescaeta is most likely not to play - agree? First one can bee seen before transfer deadline though.

    Cheers all

Built my team primarily with GW1&2 in mind and now I have Danilo and Hummels out. Would you WC this?

    Muslera, Ozoho
    Hummels, Meunier, Trippier, Danilo, Pavard
    Eriksen, Coutinho, Nandez, AlDawsari, Meza
    Cavani, Griezmann, Lukaku

Seems maybe a little silly with essentially a WC after this week, but this GW will have rotation and I may not even have 11 here, and bad fixtures.

Looks solid to me. Hummels tweeted there’s still a little chance of him making R2 game so hopefully should be fine for R3

Yeah as it stands I’ll sell Danilo I guess. But with Belgium v England and France v Denmark my fixtures are quite poor. Hopefully Hummels is okay, I’ll leave it as late as possible.

Agreed ref jrod. Thinking of sticking, but just checking views. Third in M/L, so may as well keep points on board. Kaku is best option if I did

I have a total of 12 transfers left in the WC, am i right to prioritise theese transfers? (marked *)

    Muslera, Halldorson
    Cacares*, Hector, Meunier*, Danilo (Dalsgaard)
    Meza*, Silva, Coutinho (Otayf, Boussoufa)
    Cavani, Kane*, Lukaku*

Thinking of getting Werner and mayb another Germany player in, Gamle on Messi revival for argentina? They must surely go for the big number win.

Is it worth tranferring Kane and Kaku out just for this round when i surely want at least one of them back.

Lukaku could be set for a sub role in round 3, if Martinez' comments are to be believed. England should be going for the win and i think Kane will feature.
Reus could be a good option from Germany instead of Werner.
I'm agreeing with you regarding transfers out. Good choices to sell. Remove any players from teams that are already out.

    My Team:

    Finnbogason Costa - Kane
Cheryshev Isco Modric Jedinak - Coutinho
Pavard Pique Varela Kutepov - Strinic
    Muslera - Subasic
    4-4-2 Formation for Round 3

    Any suggestions?

No community tournaments? What about the yes/no game that I ran and you even took part in Geoff. Very poor that the efforts of some are not recognised by the site. No wonder most can't be bothered with the community aspect any more.

See the last paragraph! In every Roundup we ask that those running tournaments and competitions send them through, so we don't forget and miss people but also so we get them correct and updated with the latest scores.

Sorry to hear that you think people can't be bothered. This has been procedure for quite a long time.

Happy to include this stuff, that's why we have a section for it!

Thanks for taking time to respond, but we shouldn't need to do this - FFS should be making an effort to be aware of the efforts people are putting in to run these competitions for the good of the community without having to be told. Taking these people for granted and not recognising them will ultimately lead to people not being bothered to do them anymore.

I'd understand if it was a competition that didn't have visibility on FFS (e.g. an ongoing FPL mini-league), but mine and Frog's competitions have had plenty of visibility on these boards.

"That's what the procedure is" is not an excuse - change your procedure! 😉

No, of course I agree 'procedure' isn't an excuse.

My thinking is that you guys put a lot of effort into the tournaments you run and it's not that much more work to send me the standings as they are on the Friday to get visibility, deserved recognition, and the correct information.

One of the reasons the Roundup is so useful is because users can find standings easily, and that goes for me too. If I have to search for tournament standings (that isn't an easy mini-league) I would probably email the user running the tournament first anyway, before including it in the Roundup, to make sure I have the most recent information. If I can get those running tournaments to contact me directly it makes it a lot easier for that article to get written and for me to be sure the info is correct, and that I haven't forgotten any 😀

I think it goes both ways really: it's beneficial both to us and the user to have more visibility. If users running tournaments want to do it a different way I'm happy to change on an individual basis, provided they let me know 🙂

I used to email Joe every week with the latest standings in my own FPL mini-leagues and also in the FFS main and members mini-leagues. That's why they got reported so regularly in the Community Roundups (though Joe did edit my reports and pick out the bits that he thought were of most interest to the FFS community - for example, he decided not to report on my Opening Day League, apart from the winner at the end of the season, and didn't post all the additional info I sent about the previous records or latest game-week of the current leaders).

The reason that I sent him the details of the FFS mini-league leaders was that they weren't getting the regular mentions in the Scoutcasts that they used to get when it was just Mark and Granville.

So just send Geoff the updates on your competition and he should include them in his Community Roundup - it's a system that usually works pretty well.
I did actually remark to him myself that he shouldn't have said there were no community tournaments, just that he had not received any updates for them, and I mentioned Fantasy Frogball, your Yes/No competition, and the FFS and Mods and Cons mini-leagues for the McDonalds WC game (none of which I am taking part in myself).
