Lionel Messi (£12.0m) remains the Fantasy focus of tonight’s Group D finale but a large proportion have lost faith in the Argentina forward.

68,000+ McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy players removed Messi from their squads before the Gameround 3 deadline, making him the most transferred out asset of the round. Although he is still the most popular figure tonight with 18.4 percent still invested.

Messi has been responsible for six of Argentina’s last seven goals and is seemingly the only hope his nation have of beating Nigeria and reaching the second round.

Hoping to keep Jorge Sampaoli’s side out is the Super Eagles’ budget goalkeeper Francis Uzoho (£4.0m) who now has 12.3 percent ownership after recording a clean sheet against Iceland in Gameround 2. With Argentina expected to throw everything at Nigeria, Uzoho looks guaranteed for at least a handful of save points.

No World Cup midfielder has yet registered more shots in the penalty area than Maximiliano Meza (£5.5m),  but the Argentinean is one of five players – along with Willy Caballero (£5.0m) and Sergio Aguero (£10.0m) – to lose their place in Jorge Sampaoli’s much-changed starting XI.

In the other Group D match, Luka Modric (£9.0m) is comfortably the most influential Fantasy asset. Having found the net twice in two World Cup matches and on penalties, he goes into Croatia’s meeting with Iceland on 14.3 percent ownership.

Dejan Lovren’s (£5.5m) back-to-back clean sheets sees him in 12.9 percent of squads but, with Croatia already qualified, the Liverpool defender is one of nine players to be rested for his country’s match against Iceland tonight.

Meanwhile, Fantasy managers have largely deserted Iceland with no player enjoying over the 3.6 percent ownership of midfielder Emil Hallfredsson (£4.5m).

Argentina XI (4-4-2): Armani; Mercado, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico; Mascherano, Banega, Perez, Di Maria; Messi, Higuain

Nigeria XI (3-5-2): Uzoho; Omeruo, Balogun, Ekong; Idowu, Etebo, Ndidi, Mikel, Moses; Musa, Iheanacho

Croatia XI (4-2-3-1): Kalinic; Jedvaj, Caleta-Car, Corluka, Pivaric; Badelj, Modric; Perisic, Kovacic, Pjaca; Kramaric

Iceland XI (4-4-1-1): Halldorsson; Saevarsson, Ingason, R. Sigurdsson, Magnusson; Bjarnason, Gunnarsson, Hallfredsson, Gudmundsson; G. Sigurdsson; Finnbogason

    What do Argentina need?

    Nigeria v Argentina (19:00 BST)

This is where it gets complicated. Argentina MUST win to have any chance. A draw or defeat means that they are going home.
If they win, Argentina will qualify as long as Iceland fail to defeat Croatia. If Iceland do beat Croatia, then Jorge Sampaoli's side can still qualify if they beat Nigeria by two more goals than Iceland win their game.

    Clear?

Gonzalo Higuain's international career has been best known to date for a bad miss in the final of both the World Cup and the Copa America.

Argentina have lost three finals in the last four years - they'd love to get to another one at the moment.

Would you have played Higuain, Aguero or Dybala?

    Or even Icardi?!

I never had him. If there was ever a game for him to deliver this is it

Very likely it's his last ever game at a world cup and probably it might be his last game for Argentina

No it really isn't. Messi is an absolute legend and one of if not the greatest of all time whether he wins a WC or not. It's not his fault Argentina have been a basket case most of his career. The WC is not as important as it was in the days of Pele and Maradona b/c the UCL has usurped it being the preeminent best on best competition.

I am talking about for Messi

This is huge for him, the passion for football in Argentina is insane, he knows he has a massive weight on his shoulders

The last thing he wants is to bow out at the group stages of his last wc

I think he knows his team is crap and they aren't going far this WC. They only qualified due to his masterpiece.

Not really a defining moment though is it. He's already defined as the best player in many people's generation ( although Maradona for me).

      3. Louis_Sans_Balls
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

couldn't disagree more. There's no bigger stage than the WC. You can't rationalize anyway you want but this is where legends are cemented. Messi's criticism will always be he didn't step up on the biggest stage like Maradona or Pele, heck even Ronaldo with a worst team had done more. I'm definitely no CR7 fan but I have to give credit where credit is due.

Sure it's real easy to do on a team of all stars with Barcelona arguably one of the best club teams in the world but it's another to do it for home and country on the biggest stage when the entire planet is watching. Of course he's still a great player but coming up short in International comps will always be his major asterisk.

It really is. I can't for the life of me remember who won the European Cup in 1986, 90, 94, but I remember the World Cups of those years.

If Messi ends his international career like this, he will be a football footnote in 25 years' time. Harsh, but true.

Ridiculous he'll always be regarded as one of the greatest. Very few players win World Cup's and if you don't happen to be born in one of the handful of countries that can actually win a WC then you're outta luck
