Pre-Season

FPL ownership watch: Salah popular despite huge price increase

It’s less than 48 hours after the launch of Fantasy Premier League 2018/19, but already some familiar names are dominating managers’ thoughts.

Mohamed Salah‘s £4.0m price rise hasn’t deterred many Fantasy bosses from drafting the record-breaking Egyptian into their squads, while a number of his Liverpool team-mates are proving popular buys in defence and attack.

Despite being the most expensive goalkeeping asset in the game this season, David de Gea (£6.0m) is the most popular choice between the sticks at this very early stage.

While we are still five weeks from the start of the Premier League season, the early market trends can give us a rough guide as to which assets will be popular ones come August.

Goalkeepers

De Gea was the highest-scoring shot-stopper in FPL last season, keeping 18 clean sheets and conceding only 28 goals in 37 league starts. A middling World Cup with Spain, in which de Gea saved only one of the seven shots on target he faced, and a price rise of £0.5m has not discouraged the 34.6% of Fantasy managers who have selected the United custodian in their early squad drafts.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) made more saves last season than any other Premier League goalkeeper and would seem a good bet to rack up more save points, if not clean sheets, in the opening months of the campaign: West Ham United face all of last season’s top six sides in their first nine Gameweeks. The former Swansea City goalkeeper currently sits in 26.9% of our squads.

Manchester City face all six of the most recently promoted Premier League clubs in their opening seven fixtures, which would account for Ederson‘s (£5.5m) 17.6% ownership.

Martin Dubravka‘s price hike to £5.0m looks to have alienated potential investors, though Nick Pope has a double-digit ownership in the same price bracket.

Should Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) get the nod as Crystal Palace’s first-choice goalkeeper, the Spaniard could prove to be an early differential. Less than 1% of FPL managers own Palace’s new signing, despite the Eagles having a kind-looking start to the season (ful, LIV, wat, SOU, hud, NEW, bou, WLV, eve).

Defenders

Liverpool assets are prominent in the early defensive ownership stakes, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) featuring in 20.7% and 17.3% of embryonic FPL squads.

Ryan Bertrand was the only defender who had more touches in the final third than Robertson in the second half of 2017/18.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) recorded a best-ever single-season total of seven goals in 2017/18 and sits just behind market leader Alexander-Arnold in 18.4% of Fantasy squads.

FPL managers have been quick to spot the potential £4.5m bargains: Charlie Daniels and Cedric Soares are both attack-minded full-backs who played in advanced positions when their managers switched to three-man defences last season.

Southampton’s first five fixtures (BUR, eve, LEI, cry BHA) have tempted 14.7% of FPL managers to take a punt on Soares, while Bournemouth meet just one of the “Big Six” in the first nine Gameweeks. Daniels features in 17.4% of squads.

Not a single defender from either of the Manchester clubs (or Arsenal) has an ownership of more than 10%, with many managers opting for the risk-free route of backing the clubs’ respective goalkeepers.

Jan Bednarek (£4.0m) is the early go-to bench fodder option, sitting in 11.6% of squads.

Midfielders

There is only one place to start. Sitting in 47% of fledgeling squads, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the most-selected (and most expensive) player in any position.

Speculation that the Egyptian might have been reclassified as a forward proved to be unfounded, though there was no escaping the inevitable price rise after his record-breaking haul of 303 points last season. Salah remaining as a midfielder and retaining that extra point for every goal (and clean sheet) is some compensation for those swallowing the inflated price tag, at least.

One player whose appeal has seemingly been dented by a price hike is Raheem Sterling (£11.0m). The England international sits in just under 5% of Fantasy squads and is a less popular midfield option than team-mates Leroy Sane (£9.5m), Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) and David Silva (£8.5m).

Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be a potential steal at £7.0m, certainly given Arsenal’s fixtures from Gameweek 3 onwards (WHU, cdf, new, EVE, WAT, ful, LEI, cry). The Armenian has been snapped up by 25.5% of FPL managers and is the second-most popular midfield option behind Salah.

Ruben Neves‘ budget price tag of £5.0m is an alluring one, though his deep-lying playmaker role (similar to Jonjo Shelvey at Newcastle) would account for his cut-price cost. Over a fifth of FPL managers have nevertheless chosen the Portuguese international in their squads.

Price hikes for last season’s budget gems, Pascal Gross (£7.0m) and Luka Milivojevic (£6.5m), haven’t diminished their appeal too much: the pair both sit in well over 10% of Fantasy bosses’ initial squads.

Forwards

Harry Kane is a “non-mover” at £12.5m and is the most popular forward in FPL, featuring in 39% of squads. Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), who is some £3.5m cheaper than Salah, is neck and neck with Kane as the go-to striking option.

The reclassification of Wilfried Zaha and Marko Arnautovic (both £7.0m) as forwards caused much discussion in the Fantasy community, but their appeal doesn’t appear to have been lessened as a result: the pair are the third and fourth-most popular attacking options at this early stage.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who scored on ten occasions and supplied four assists in his 12 starts for Arsenal last season, is almost twice as popular a buy as Sergio Aguero, who starts at the same price. Romelu Lukaku, the third forward option available at £11.0m, features in 17.2% of squads, meanwhile.

There appear to be a plethora of viable mid-priced striking options available to Fantasy managers this season, particularly with Zaha and Arnautovic’s re-categorisation. Olivier Giroud (£8.0m) and Cenk Tosun (£7.0m) are two other options in this grouping of forwards who have double-digit ownerships.

Interesting most of the RMT squads I've seen on twitter shun Salah. They're all kidding themselves 🙂 13.0 is well worth it if he continues to be a reliable captain.

Scrambled a team together with Kane and Salah, but actually prefer it now without Kane and it looks half decent now, might even just permacap Salah 🙂

Morning dzz, who would you captain today out of the following lot?
    Kane, Trippier,Maguire, Modric,Golovin

Kane the obvious option but feel it will a tight 1-nil game...perhaps maguire as a punt? or even modric

Somewhere to chat captaincy stick or twist:

How has your captain done so far this Round?

Are you unsure whether to stick or twist? What are your options?

With only two days of play, what substitutions do you have planned - any dilemmas?

Please post your questions here and share your thoughts on FWC strategy for the final day of the Quarter Final Round.

Very tricky and one of the main reasons I brought in Kane last round, just to guarantee a no brainer cap on 2nd day if they progressed.

Lingard for attempts. Trippier for CS/assist potential. Rakatic is a bit unknown. Decent no attempts first couple of games but his output seems to have dropped off..reckon he'll be well up for this one though. No idea which is choose...probs Trips I think...

Sticking on Griezmannn(c) after his goal+assist.

Slight dilemma is which 2 to bring in from Granqvist, Claesson and Golovin as only 2 of my 5 outfield players blanked yesterday. Think I'm going G+G.

Brazil out yesterday means I'm 3 players down already. Guaranteed another 3-5 players thru (1xRUS v 2xCRO, 2xSWE v 3xENG) so should be able to field 11 after 5FT's barring any injuries or suspensions...

14 trades left in Telegraph. Have Trippier Granqvist Modric Rakatic
3 trades Musiera Coutinho Neymar to Subasic Forsberg Kane.

13 trades here with Strinic Lovren Trippier Modric Lingard Kane. Will use 1 today for Subasic. Other 4 are Griezmann and 3 Brazil players who will become who will be transferred to Lukaku Hazard Pogba. Leaving 9 trades. I am in trouble if Sweden and Russia do the double today!

I've also got 13 left. I'm gonna go all out today tho since I lost 5 samba boys yesterday and I reckon it's best to get as many through to the semi's as possible since the losers of that game still have the 3rd place game which oddly counts. If Salah gets anywhere near his last pts total, he's actually very good value. I calculated he was worth around 16.0m last season. That's just raw points, captaincy not included.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, although it's generally wise not to care too much about ownership when the season begins unless we're talking 40% plus. This is the time when we have the least information, after all, so not much point worrying about ownership

Soooo. . . . .apparently Ramsey is dilly-dallying on his contract. Chelsea reportedly ready to bid for him.

I like what I hear about Unai, but damn he wont go out of his way for anyone. He seems to think that if a player believes they are bigger than the club they should leave. I can see the logic, but we wont a club left if he keeps that up.

I'd start with Aguero as a placeholder for Kane due to WC.

Louis Zaha, is that the gay lovechild of Louis Saha & Wilfred Zaha?

How do you know Louis Zaha is gay? Might rebel against his parents?

Nick Pope is still getting too overlooked. Provides excellent value at just £5m. Great fixtures too!

There's a big chance he don't start the season, he's away with England and they start their season early because of the Europa, Heaton could finally get his opportunity to get back in and stay in.

Heaton is the captain so I'm not sure I'd assume anything for the start, better to see how it plays out IMO.

Assuming that I don’t need to actually do anything when the max cap chip is enabled? It’s still on Neymar despite having higher scorers in my team. I guess it will change automatically after all games are over?

Salah V Kane is not much of a battle if you think about it, Salah stands on his own for midfield captaincy options, unless Sanchez wakes up or Hazard gets motivated, he's the stand out go to midfield captain.

Aubameyang & Aguero can both stand toe to toe with Kane at 1.5m cheaper, I think you could get away with not having Kane If you have one of the other two.

There's an argument to have neither and have a mega strong 11 but if you have to pick one, feels like this is the year where Kane misses out.

Agree, Kane not in my starting team and don't feel bad about it (so far).

Quite comfortable going without and having Aubameyang/Aguero.

Not sure I feel the same way about Salah, having Mane as an alternative could work but there will always be the captaincy battle to fight every week.

Fair. I've managed to squeeze them all in at the expense of 3 budget mids:

        DDG
        TAA | Lowton | Cedric
        Salah | KDB | RLC | McArthur | Neves
        Kane | Auba

        4m | Daniels | Dunk | Quaner

Does Doherty start for wolves this season? Could use the 0.5 to go from Douglas to him

Wolves fan here. I expect us to sign some competition for him, let's put it that way.

I'm going with Boly @4.5 - 100% nailed and some set-pieces threat. And a great name, of course.

    Ederson 4.0

    Salah sane walcott hughes gunnarson
    Lukaku firmino zaha

    How is this team?

How does this look for a PL team?

    Ederson / Fabianski
    Robertson / Cedric / Daniels / Tomkins / Dunk
    Salah / D Silva / Lingard / Cairney / Nevez
    Kane / Giroud / Zaha

  30. Kizza_10

    Fabianski
    Cedric Moses Robertson
    Sane Salah Mane Eriksen Mhiki
    Zaha Arnautovic

    Subs:
    Begovic, Bednarek, Masuaku, Gunnarson

With a such heavy hitting midfield do you think I could get away with the attack of Zaha & Arnie ?

(I could swap Mane for Firmino but I feel Mane maybe the better option)

Nope. Mane is fool's gold - barely gets any bonus, making him the worst of the Liverpool front 3
