Huddersfield Town made a mockery of the doom-mongering pre-season predictions to avoid relegation in their debut Premier League campaign.

The Terriers, who were odds-on with the bookmakers to make an instant return to the Championship before a ball was kicked, only fell into the drop zone once in the entire season and finished four points ahead of 18th-placed Swansea City.

Town’s squad was among the cheapest in Fantasy Premier League last season, with not a single player having a starting price of more than £6.0m. The same is true for the coming campaign, with striker Steve Mounie the most expensive asset in David Wagner’s squad.

Jonas Lossl, Christopher Schindler and Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen broke the 100-point barrier in FPL last season and all three have been priced up at £4.5m again this time after their value-for-money performances in 2017/18. Midfielder Aaron Mooy, Town’s highest-scoring outfield player in FPL last season, is also a non-mover at £5.5m.

Only the sides who finished in the top seven kept more clean sheets than Huddersfield (ten) last season, though the Terriers’ concerning form in the second half of 2017/18 – in which they won just three of their final 20 matches and recorded as many shut-outs – is worth noting to Fantasy managers ahead of the coming season.

In-depth data on Huddersfield’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the salient statistics in the article below.

    Value Hunting?..,

Always do couple of years review before pricing to have in mind a figure of perceived value. Partly algo, with manual adjustments.
    ————————————————
This year’s pick from each team:

ARS - Bellerin. -0.5 Any of Arsenal’s starting defence really. He’s just preference based on 2 seasons back numbers.

BOU - King. -0.5. Also had Charlie Daniels and Stanislas as value. Slo I start and reverse OOP but King didn’t have a season justifying a price drop. As good as the 7.0 options.

BRI - Ryan 0.0. He was the price I hoped and thought but he does represent value at that price. 150pts compared to Dunk and Duffy’s 100pts in the same defence

BUR - Wood 0.0 I wasn’t planning on starting with him and predicted 6.5 but did think he would be value at that price. Expected they might have overpriced him but only their defence copped it

CAR - Ralls -1.0 usually top player on the set pieces from promoted club comes in at 5.5-6.5 range. Under the radar this one.

CHE - Morata -0.5 a 1.5 mil YoY drop was an overreaction.

CPL - Nil. Zaha would have been half mil of value but copped a positional change to offset. Still might own him but not for value reasons.

EVE - Coleman -0.5 just edges out Walcott. His price is 1.5 of value just a few seasons ago. Getting a rare injury affecting discount

FUL - Cairney -1.0 similar reasons to Ralls. They got sessegnon price wrong imo when looking at Cairneys

HUD - Pritchard -0.5 the 5m definitely my fave price bracket For mids this year. Nice price this

LEI - Gray -0.5 they missed a trick here not anticipating Mahrez inevitable departure.

LIV - Lovren -0.5 surprised he wasn’t priced at Arsenal starter type price. They didn’t take any stand with the right backs throwing them all on 5, but thought Lovren is the pick of the 5s for BPs and nailedness

MCI - Mendy -0.5 another injury related discount. Wasn’t entitled to drop half yet. Good pickup

MUN - Bailley -0.5 half mil drop feels a bit premature. Definitely had him whatever smacking was priced

NEW - Nil. Didn’t have any of the defenders being worth above 4.5 so not surprised of what we got.

SOT - Cedric -0.5 has held his own at 5 the last 3 years so was one of first picked when I saw he’d been dropped

TOT - Nil. An entire rotation heavy backline all coming in at 6.0 is frankly a joke

WAT - Hughes 0.0 both he and pereyra came in at the price predicted but think they are both very interesting at their price. Lean Hughes way for 1mil less

WHU - Fabianski -0.5 obv should have been in the 5mil keeper pool. Along with Cedric for a set and forget at those odds. Yarmolenko could be as much as 1.5mil undervalued. If big 6 signed he comes in absolute minimum 7.5mil and as high as 9.0

WOL - Costa -0.5 seems we were gifted an interesting 5mil in each promoted team. Will take it

    ————————————————
I will definitely be going with 2x 5.0
Mids and rotating them. Choosing which 2 is the hard part!!

Agree Home/Away or Easy/Hard both don’t really work with set piece type players but just think it’s the price bracket where we’ll see early price rises so I want to get some of that action!

Gray has often had flashes of looking really good but has never fulfilled that promise, even when handed a starter's role. Will he start performing only because Mahrez is gone?

But the good thing is that when the likes of Pep and Klopp rotate their players we can have decent players coming in to replace them rather than defensive mids who often get us 1 or 2 points at most.

The Mahrez move has been on the cards since the Jan window. Gray is priced accordingly because he has no end product. I'd rather have Iheanacho

Time will tell in returns improving but he will likely double the mins played last 2 seasons, in itself has value and price rise attached to it. Don’t hate the iheanaccho thinking either!!

Costa & Hughes could do you well. Personally might go him with Deulofeu and play deu most weeks. Why share only one player from each team, though? Don't fully understand the point of these, really. What if you're looking for a budget defender, but you already have JWP in midfield, so can't rotate him with Cedric, for example? Or do you genuinely feel that WHU are the only team with multiple players who are priced right or better? Sorry, I don't understand, but appreciate the effort and the read 🙂

Yep and tbh all the defenders I was eyeing off from the promoted clubs came in at 5.0 and immediately no value, so really not that many. Most in my sheet are overpriced if not right with sterling the worst.

Just preferred pick sample. Called out other names if worth noting. BOU case in point. I used to upload the spreadsheet to google docs each season and you could see them all. Just easier to summarise.

Don’t often find many more than a couple in each team of value. They don’t give much away the FPL!

Fair enough. Currently have Zaha, Coleman, Mendy and Fabianski from your list, so I do think it's a good list! Leicester signing James Maddison might hinder Gray's progess btw

Also the write-up perfectly summarises the Tottenham situation. How all their defenders can be 6.0 when literally everyone is rotation-prone is beyond me.

Spurs look full on avoid to start with in my opinion. They have a squad that hasn't had a pre-season and all their assets are expensive.

Once the first choice defenders are established they will all be overpriced at over 6!

So much value this year in mid. Kenedy was signed after my analysis obv and I didn’t actually have Deleufeu in my sheet either. 2 more popular picks around the price, but does suggest can go with something like Salah + city mid + 6.5 of choice + 2x sub 5.5.

Reading Modric's comments today on England's media arrogance I must say I completely agree with him.

As a neutral, England were one of the teams I was initially cheering for, in addition to Peru, Iceland, Argentina and Senegal. But after the Panama win (one of the worst sides to reach the World cup in the modern era) the ironic "It's coming home, we're going to win it etc" seemed to fade away and people, especially the media actually started to believe it... plotting their best route to the final, when the best team they had beaten was Tunisia, and that win was a close call By the time they played Colombia I found myself firmly rooting against England.

It's a bit of a shame. Southgate, Kane and co. all seem a likeable bunch but the level of arrogance from outside the squad does the England team no favours and makes it impossible for non-English people to be on their side. I think Southgate is a decent skin, but he also failed to adapt his system against one of the strongest midfields in the tournament - Lingard, Ali and Henderson alone against the likes of Modric and Rakitic? England need a quality midfielder or two that isn't afraid of actually getting on the ball in hard games when their team needs some control.

Its a shame Wilshire is so injury prone (and he lost focus off field) as he was the closest to that type of player England needed.

So, basically if we sing/cheer our team and actually believe they can win then we’re arrogant?
Croatia were not that much better then England. Had England scored 2 in the first half then they would be in the final. Granted France would most likely have won, but we would have got to the final. But we cant get excited according to you.
Lets not bother going to stadiums and supporting them next time, then we might not seem so “arrogant”.

It was fun.I agree. Modric was just picking up on the fact that the Media were getting ahead of themselves a little. Their tired. We had tough game against Columbia, not so much Sweden. We were the ones looking tired. I agree with the original comment about holding the ball. We lost control, that’s why we got tired.

Clearly letting your disappointment taint your view of his comment.

He probably wasn't neutral given all those teams he listed. But he never said fans shouldn't sing and be optimistic.

He blamed the MEDIA. Something I completely agree with. They ran it down your throat to the point it's not only unprofessional but embarassing for them - Ian Wright resorting to a mock Irish accent to try deflect from his arrogance when called out on it post match.

I don’t think the media were unprofessional or embarrassing, I think people need to lighten up, if a nation wants sing it’s coming home and get excited then leave us to it.

Roy Keane made himself look a complete and utter idiot post match telling us we shouldn’t be happy to be in semis, he was provoking Ian write.

I'll just reply to this one to make it easier.

Again, not saying the nation shouldn't sing. That's where I think you're all being sensitive not us. I said the MEDIA should be professional.

You expect a bias but not to the point the commentary is complete satire.

Can you honestly say if it was roles reversed and an English player had a stormed and called it like that you wouldn't see his point?

Maybe I’m missing something, or haven’t picked up on the point.

What have the media done that wasn’t professional?

Honestly I am the least sensitive person, I genuinly would have no problem with anyone acting the way us fans or media have done, everyone to their own.

The original point was modric was in the wrong. I'm arguing that he wasn't. He was questioned and proved the doubting media wrong and therefore spoke out.

If it had been roles reversed you wouldn't have changed your opinion on an English player you liked.

The professional part was more my annoyance at the commentary which was laughable. Some pundits too. You can be optimistic but for Ian Wright to lose it like that was unprofessional even if provoked. He's clearly been dishing it out so needs to take it.

Happy to disagree on the second point because of obvious bias on either side

In all honesty, being English, I am going to be bias, so my view is probably irrelevant 😆 .

Maybe the media got over confident, but being English it added to a great atmosphere here for us as the whole nation was hyped and the buzz in the pubs was unreal when we were making our way to the semis (regardless of how rubbish our opponents were).

I now get why Modric has said that, but oh well. I’m sure I’d be able to find some Croatian media material somewhere that spoke about potentially how their fixture route to the final was also quite a favourable one (playing teams such as Russia and England). But I can’t be assed to dig.

If you want rotating 4.5m keepers then do Foster to fabianski as patricio and fabianski rotate quite well.

Wait and see on diop, need some pre season info on him before we have an idea on Pellegrinis favoured 11.

Yea, on previous articles, just scroll through the pages of posts it will be full of good for thought for you.

Honestly, you can get a great team with Salah, if he continues last seasons form he is under priced and not owning him couldndestroy your season because every man and their dog is going to be captaining him especially these first fixtures.

          Patricio Speroni

          Mendy Robertson Jones Ward Schelotto

          Salah Walcott Jota Deulofeu Stephens

          Zaha Aub Aguero

Just as an example. Plenty wiggle room to downgrade a striker when a budget option shows up in pre season or lower Mendy for a extra budget to add an extra upper priced mid too.

I'm thinking along the same lines. I wouldn't invest that much in a player at the start of the season unless I would captain him. Plenty of City and Arsenal captaincy options in first few GWs.

But if Salah bags a double against Palace then Brighton in GW 2 and 3 and goes even higher how do you accomodate? Especially if Kane is back and on normal form.

We will all be hoping for some confirmation that Mendy will be starting the season. First name on my teamsheet if he does appear to be. I'll be going Costa for my 5m mid if he also seems like starting. I'm an Evertonian and am really not sure about our defence without a serious signing or two.

Yup. He's cheaper again now though... So he can be afforded the right to be a bit inconsistent. You don't often get a player more than capable of a hatrick for 6.5 umless its Mahrez 3 years ago.

No worries. Quite easy to do it since we have very similar teams. I'd also consider the drop down to Patricio if you need extra funds. From all I've read about wolves it sounds like they're solid at the back with their system.

As a fellow spurs fan I'm finding it weird not considering a player at all for the start!

Those of you who have Coleman at 5.5 - I'd much prefer Douglas at 5.0. In a better defensive team, just as attacking, on all set pieces and just off the back of an extraordinary season (5G and 14A in the league). Wolves have some very tasty fixtures coming up too.

I don't think there will be as many players rested after the world cup as we think.

The teams challenging for the league title won't want Man City to race away and have it virtually wrapped up by December again.

City can afford to rest players due to the size and quality of their squad, but I'm not sure that the other teams can.

I have a feeling Mahrez will be overlooked and will tear it up at the start.

One of the first names in my team at that price and with uncertainty around others in that City attack. 0.5 cheaper than Sané who is the only other City attacker I’d contemplate starting with from that midfield 🙂

              Check the Wolves hot topics.

Neves is the question mark and Mendy is a big maybe.

Really good team. Only remark is Neves. He's more of a defensive mid. Like you you said in a reply to FG, Cairney is a better pick.

      Great team.

Take a look at Cairney who's priced @ 5.0 as well.
As I understood, he has a more attacking role compared to Neves.

Chelsea refusing to comment on Conte despite it being reported everywhere and even the players posting on social media. Such a classless club

    First draft...

    Ederson
    Coleman, Daniels, Robertson, Smalling
    Walcott, Salah, David Silva
    Firmino, Zaha, Aguero

    Subs - no good subs

Gameweek 3 use 2 free transfers to:
    Transfer out Smalling+Walcott
    Transfer in Bellerin+Miki

    Thoughts please?

    I quite like this
    GW1
    Foster,
    Coleman,Douglas,Robertson
    Salah,Sigurdsson,Deulofeu,Costa
    Aguero,Aubameyang,Zaha

    Patricio,Bellerin,Stephens,Cedric

Bellerin would replace Costa for GW2 for a 4-3-3 and Costa would rotate with Deulofeu

Pretty good. Maybe you don’t need 3 5+dfs.

Hey scouts, time for a new filtering system for your player stats. 'Against non top six clubs' should totally be a thing now.
