Great Expectations

Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) has the potential to be the go-to Manchester City defensive option in 2018/19 after his comeback from long-term injury.

The Frenchman was ruled out for most of last season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in Gameweek 6, but is fit and ready to go for the new campaign, at a cheaper price than colleagues Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Kyle Walker (£6.5m).

We’ve gone over the data to find out whether Fantasy Premier League managers can expect to see the Mendy who registered eight assists in 25 league matches and seven Champions League appearances prior to signing for Man City.

CREATIVE GENIUS

Mendy’s start to the 2017/18 demonstrated his huge creative potential. In the first five Gameweeks of last season, before his Gameweek 6 injury, only Premier League four defenders created more chances than the Frenchman, all of them with more starts under their belt in that period. The Frenchman fashioned seven opportunities in 270 minutes, Jose Holebas (£4.5m) eight in 360, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) nine in 369, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m) nine in 269 and Ben Davies (£6.0m) 13 in 350.

In fact, only three Man City players created more than Mendy, David Silva (£8.5m) with 17 chances in five starts, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) with 15 in five and Sergio Aguero (£11.0) with 12 in four. And despite making just seven appearances in the entire campaign, just De Bruyne and Leroy Sané (£9.5m) registered more successful crosses from open play than Mendy’s eight, with 14 and nine respectively.

Adding a further three appearances after a Gameweek 34 return, Mendy created nine chances and had five shots on goal in 361 minutes across the season as a whole. That averaged out at a key pass every 40.1 minutes, the next best in the City defence was Walker with one every 92.9. Furthermore, his shot every 72.2 minutes was the second-best in the City defence, with Danilo’s (£5.5m) 70.6 coming out on top.

DEFENSIVE RETURNS

On top of Mendy’s impressive creative potential is his ability to keep a healthy number of clean sheets. No side conceded fewer goals than Man City’s 27 last season and only Manchester United recorded more clean sheets, their total of 19 just one better than the Citizens’ 18.

Pep Guardiola’s champions sit top of our season ticker for defence in the opening six Gameweeks so shutouts should be expected. After a tricky trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 1, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Fulham are all set to visit the Etihad Stadium with trips to Wolves and Cardiff in Gameweeks 3 and 6 respectively.

ON THE MENDY

Mendy will be ahead in his pre-season development compared to everybody else. Even though he only registered 40 minutes in Russia, the training he did there with France was effectively his pre-season and because he missed so much time with the injury, his body and mind should be in a position to head back to training with his club and then competitive action without feeling burned out.

ROTATION FREE (FOR NOW)

Mendy was brought to Man City last season to be the first-choice left-back and the Frenchman looks set to make that position his own, especially in the early weeks of 2018/19. The late returns to training of Danilo and Fabian Delph (£5.5m) means that the only cover for the left of defence will be Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), who may not be at the club anymore by Gameweek 1 with transfer reports linking him elsewhere. Those factors should ensure very little rotation on Mendy’s part to begin with, as he is already with the main training group in the USA.

    Thoughts Please.

Have I tweaked too much to get Aubameyang in with Kun?

    DDG/Norris

    Bennett/Tomkins/Robertson/Cedric/Mendy

    Salah/Silva/Hughes/Mkhi/Costa

    Aguero/Aubameyang/Kamara

    Much appreciated

Are people selecting Richarlison because of Everton's fixtures? Surely can't based on the amount of chances he wasted last year? What makes you think he will be any better this year?

But he was the problem. Not the other players.

Check his conv rate in members area/min per goal etc versus his minutes/chances he was getting.

        Shocking.

It was more the low quality reference and assumptions assist potential was directly related to the move.

He has just turned 21... what makes you think he won't do better than last year? And if he starts as well as he did last year, then he is a necessary investment. Everton's early fixtures are fantastic.

Asking 'what makes you think he will be any better this year' basically negates anyone who didn't perform well last year.

Yes the fixtures are good. Everton has had good fixtures before and flopped. Yes they have a new manager that many are putting their faith in.

Watford's opening 3 fixtures are probably better than that of Everton, yet nearly no one had Richarlison in their team until the Everton move was mentioned. It seems he suddenly is an option now that people have 6.5m to spend and they can't pick Walcott.

I assume you know the answer to this but it's not just about the first 3 fixtures - Watford's fixtures get horrible after GW3 - Everton's are good for about 3 months.

Everton's team has more attacking potential than Watford - Tosun has more goals in him than Deeney. Sig is a very good AMC - whilst Everton have good wide options, decent attacking full backs, and will spend more money before the window has closed. Despite a dreadful season, Everton still finished 6 places higher than Watford.

So it seems obvious to me - Everton have a better team than Watford. They've hired an attack minded manager who likes to harness pace and power - Everton, for all their terrible buying, have that in the squad now. Everton have better fixtures. There is also an obvious link between Richarlison's form and Silva - and potential rotation doubts disappear at Everton initially imo, given the price tag involved.

Fair enough. Richarlison is a wait and see for me. I would rather spend 1m+ on Sigurdson.

Hi folks first timer on here but interested to get your feedback on this:

    Ryan; Boruc
    Mendy Robertson Daniels; Schindler AWB

    Salah Eriksen Mkhitaryan McArthur; Masuaku

    Aguero Firmino Arnie

    3-4-3 formation

    1. Teror
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 12 months ago

Not a bad team but you don't go for two 4.5's in a 3-4-3. I'd suggest downgrading Eriksen so you can upgrade McArthur to at least a 5.0 player like Cairney. There are better picks than Schindler too, like Schlupp or Cook. And I'm not sure about those keepers. Fabianski / Foster would be a better bet: some of the big boyz like Jonty are going for them and that's always a good sign. Otherwise solid enough.

Welcome! I like it a lot, especially the attack, although I agree with the guy above regarding 2 4.5 mids in a 3-4-3. There are some really good options at 5.0 (Hughes, Cairney, Ralls, Costa) and a bit more expensive at 6.5 (Jota, Richarlison, Lamela(until Son is back)). So maybe have a look at upgrading 1 of your 4.5's. Also I would avoid Daniels, plenty of better 4.5s like Cedric, Wolves defenders especially Doherty, Tomkins, potentially one Everton CB.

Thanks for the feedback to both guys.

McAthur is a £5m midfielder- guess I would rather go with that than one of the new guys and not knowing what to expect. Palace descent fixtures as well...-

        It’s a lottery with those £4.5m defenders!

        But appreciate the feedback.

Moutinho is an interesting signing because I would have thought that Saiss and Neves midfield partnership would remain nailed given how integral they both are to how Wolves play. Unless they are looking at switching formations and deploying a three man midfield, which I think is unlikely. I'm not sure how likely Saiss playing CB would be, but will certainly moniter the situation.

Is TAA expected to start the season. I don’t personally rate Cédric for fantasy don’t see many clean sheets has he ever scored in the prem? Think he chips in about 3 assists a season and that’s about it. Fernandinho and Cairney too much midfield risk for me

No matter how much they spend, they will never finish higher than seventh.

That's not true. If they spend more than any other club in the world, they'll finish higher than 7th.

I'd go for Danny Ward over Stephens and Wan-Bissaka over Bennett

  23. LangerznMash

    Pickford
    Mendy, Robertson, Shaw, Schlupp
    Sanchez, Mane, Lamela
    Kane (C), Aguero, Wood

    Subs: Skekeleburg, Wan-B, Stephens, Schneiderlin.

For GW3 take 4 point hit to change Shaw > Alexander-Arnold, Sanchez > Ramsey, Wood > Lacazette

I think Schlupp is an amazing OOP player (even more so if Zaha leaves) however considering swapping for a 4.5 Newcastle defender due to rotation pairing with Everton (Schneiderlin) so flick between 433 and 343.

Schneiderlin may not play often. And when he does, he will get you 2/3 points.

Dyche has said Wood is in contention to play against Aberdeen so will be fit to start GW1.
I'm confident Schneiderlin will get around 80 points this season which is great for a 4.5 sub.

    Ederson
    Robertson, Daniels, Tomkins, Keane
    Jota, Richarlison, Salah

No decent subs but worth a gamble?

Without factoring opening fixtures, I would say Arnie, Zaha, Tosun.

However the issue is fixtures, which then makes it Tosun, Zaha, Arnie.

So I would go for Zaha then Arnie once West Hams fixtures clear up.

    1) Is Wan-Bissaka gonna start? Nailed?
    2) Danny Ward from Cardiff or Hudson-Odoi from CHELSEA. I fancy the latter due to yesterday's performance especially. Neither not an option 🙂

Read a lot about the 'no Salah' criticism of RMT's...I can only speak for my own team but I dont think its that clear cut. For me, the option comes down to:

    A: Salah / 7m striker (Tosun, Zaha or Arnie) / 4m defender

B: Mane / Aguero or Auba / Mendy

I like the flexibility of B giving me more formations I can play and I get 3 pretty premium players so a little torn...thoughts?

Totally agree with you, i think having Salah is a waste your banking on him having a good week every week but your more likely to generate greater points if you spread that money around wisely.

There really isn't a right or wrong approach to this, it just a matter of where you choose to place your trust. Bt not owning Mo could have bigger consequences if he does well and if he doesn't then it's easier to downgrade

Stephens is nailed but probably 2 pointer each week. Chalobah could be good if he's nailed. I've also heard on here that Ward from Cardiff is an attacking mid but not sure he will play. Gunnarsson is an option also.
