Fantasy Premier League is back for another season so Fantasy Football Scout are, once again, here to help.

Perhaps you’ve never played FPL before and have been roped into a mini-league by one of your overly keen friends. Or maybe you’re one of those die-hard Fantasy managers who needs a complete guide to show your clueless colleagues to make sure they definitely sign up to your mini-league?

Whoever you are, we hope this comprehensive guide tells you all you need to know about FPL this summer.

What is Fantasy Premier League?

Fantasy Premier League is a game that casts you in the role of a fantasy manager. You are given the task to pick a squad of real-life players who score points for your team based on their performances in their own matches.

Do I need to play in a league?

The game can be played solo, with managers pitching their team against all other registered managers in the world. However, the more exciting option is to enter your team in a private mini-league with your friends or colleagues.

How do I pick my team or squad?

FPL hands you a £100m budget which you spend on your squad. If you’re new to the game this budget may seem generous but once you take a look at the player list and start selecting, it’s a good bet that it will start getting eaten up pretty quickly. You will find that the most expensive players will be the forwards.

Your squad will have 15 players in it but only 11 can start every week, it’s up to you to decide which four to leave on the bench. They will only come into your side if members of your starting line-up do not register any minutes.

Can I change my lineup once I’ve picked it?

Before the start of the Premier League season, you can make an unlimited number of transfers as long as the value of your squad does not exceed the £100m budget. However, once the first deadline has passed you are limited to one free transfer per Gameweek. If you do not use it then you will have two free transfers the following Gameweek, although you cannot roll more than two. You are allowed to make more transfers on top of the free ones, but you will be charged four points for each switch made that is surplus to your allocation for that week.

The deadline for each Gameweek is always one hour before the kick-off time of the first fixture. Normally that’s at 11.30am UK time on a Saturday but there will be Friday night matches and mid-week fixtures too this season.

How do I allocate my budget?

In order to maintain a balance in your squad, it is best to split your budget evenly across the four different positions: goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards. Ideally, you want no more than two premium asset per position and would do well to fill your squad out with cheaper assets who are important to the so-called smaller clubs.

Doing so can reap rewards. Your players will get injuries, suspensions and loss of form and if you take steps to select a more balanced team in terms of cost, you may find it easier to repair any holes. Ideally, you need to aim for a situation whereby one-for-one transfers will be enough to fix any problems you may run into. Investing heavily in one area of the team and then being unlucky enough to run into problems in that area, could leave you with surplus cash that will be wasted without using additional transfers elsewhere in your team.

Okay, so which players do I pick?

As there a large number of players available in FPL there are lots of potentially effective combinations. At the early stage of the season, it’s harder to say which assets will be the most important, but we will always have plenty of content available to help you pick your initial squad and make your transfers now and through the season. So make sure you stick around!

How Do I Score Points?

There are lots of different ways to score points on FPL, with goals, assists and clean sheets the most important match events. Whoever you pick as captain will score double points in that Gameweek. Below is a grid which details how to score with players from different positions.

ActionPoints scored
Playing up to 60 minutes1
Playing more than 60 minutes2
Each goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender6
Each goal scored by a midfielder5
Each goal scored by a forward4
Each assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper/defender (must play 60+ mins)4
Clean sheet by a midfielder (must play 60+ mins)1
Every three shots saved by a goalkeeper1
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Bonus points for the best players in a match1-3

Can My Team Lose Points?

Unfortunately, there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-2
Every two goals conceded by a goalkeeper/defender-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

WHAT ARE THE CHIPS?

There are four different chips Fantasy managers can use on FPL this season to boost their overall points-score in any given Gameweek. They are:

Wildcard – The Wildcard allows you to make an unlimited number of transfers in a Gameweek without incurring any points hits. You have two of these to use. The first can be used at any point until December 29th, while the second can only be used after that date.

Triple Captain – Normally your chosen captain will score double points in a Gameweek. One week in the season you can deploy the Triple Captain chip to triple his score instead.

Bench Boost – Usually you are forced to bench four of your players but the Bench Boost allows you to, one week a season, add the points from your substitute to your overall Gameweek score.

Free Hit – Just like the Wildcard, this allows you to make any number of transfers you wish without losing points to transfer hits. However, it only lasts one Gameweek; once it is over your old team comes back. This is especially useful for blank or double Gameweeks.

What do I do if my players get injured or suspended?

You need to assess and react to injuries quickly. Monitor our injuries and bans table regularly to check on your team and if a player looks to be out for 2-3 weeks consider replacing him as this could well mean a 3-4 game absence given that he’d have to regain his match fitness and place in the side.

If you have players simply not playing you need to look at just how serious an issue this is on a player by player basis.

As a rule, though, it’s something you need to consider acting upon. Even if the player is getting on as a sub or even starting 75% of the first five games, if he has competition for his place or has been rotated, then it’s something you may have to deal with over the entire season. If you have an alternative on your shortlist who is more reliable and scoring well, it might be best to make the change early rather than have one player distract you and have you guarding transfers for the opening few months.

When should I sign new players for my team?

As for player form, this will fluctuate throughout the season. Keep an eye out for form players but don’t be tempted by one week wonders who hit a hat-trick and then never follow it up for the rest of the season. Sustained form and proven point scorers are what you’re after. Jumping on bandwagons can often be profitable but only when it’s being pulled by a player who can sustain their form.

There’s certainly a wealth of information to sift through on this website if you’re going to try to stay on top of things. We’ll bring you the information you need on a weekly basis to make informed decisions and there will be enough opinion from us and other visitors to the site to consider. Monitor our team news section week-by-week prior to fixtures and also check out the Scout Notes that we provide after every set of matches. These will point out any significant changes to team lineups and offer clues on which players have their place under threat at any given time, as well as those players coming into form.

I am not saying they are not good picks.
I am saying do you really want to play at least 1 or 2 of them in a bad fixture week.

Is anyone else looking to use their BB in GW1?

I'm fairly keen on it and my reasoning behind it is based on a few factors:

    1. I believe that keeping this chip specifically for the DGWs later in the season often leads to loading up on bad picks on pre-DGW Wildcard with the false hope that the cheapies will deliver - what they do is they usually get max. 1/2pts extra or don't even appear.

    2. Palace, Bournemouth, Wolves etc. have nice opening fixtures and their options are very cheap. There are some picks that are offer great value right now - Wan Bissaka, Bennett, Schlupp, Sorloth. Many of us will start the season with at least one of them and now may be the best time to capitalize on their potential. Never know if they can keep their place long-term.

    3. Due to the best players in the league being rested after their World Cup campaigns it is easier to find the money for a strong bench now while using this chip. Later in the season it can be difficult to find the cash for strengthening your bench when the likes of Hazard, Kane, KDB or Lukaku get back in action.

        • 10 Years

Couldn't you? Christmas period (rotation galore), UCL quarters/semis just for starters. What is the reasoning behind your statement?

          • 15 Years

Because as far as GW1 lineups are concerned most of our information is coming from last season and a bunch of pre-season friendlies where for the most part the top teams have skeleton squads. Just too much guesswork for mine, coupled with the fact that you would be putting too much faith in lower sides and new boys. Understand your points above which are valid ones, just think you can still maximise it in a DGW.

            • 10 Years
            7 years, 8 months ago

Fair enough! Point taken and I admit that the success of this strategy does indeed rely on the usual suspects in your team starting. If I had a few doubts over the certainty of starts for a few of my players pre-GW1 I would probably abandon this idea.In an ideal world, however, we get specific comments from managers regarding their players' availability over the next 10 days and the strategy is a success haha

      I will say this:
Almost none from here will do it and you will probably make more points playing it gw1 than me or many from here in dgw.

    4. Kim Jong Kün
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

That's a very interesting idea. All valid reasons. The gain from the BB is at the margins anyways, on the bench, most of whom we can be sure are going to play GW1. I like it. Also a strong reason is to keep us from being tempted by 4.0 D fodder etc.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

I have a motive to use in due to competing in a weekly cash ML and it could give me the edge to win week one.

BUT it's too much of a lottery guessing who starts GW1 and we all have a high chance of expensive players being rested with out cheap subs stepping up anyway.

Therefore, GW1 really is the worst week to use it.

I think your logic is sound but like one of the other posters mentioned predicting 15 starters in GW1 is really tough, especially with the issue og those returning from the World Cup. If you want to use it early, then I think the best time would be the week after you Wild Card. At least by then teams will be more settled and you will be able to set up your bench aimed at the following week's fixtures.

Mendy, Pedro, Aguero (and Firmino gw 1) are all rotation risk. You cant have players like that with no bench.

      6.5.
Better 4.5m goalie options than Foster - Fab, Patricio
      PvA - Bellerin same price
      Richarlison - better 6.5 mids
      Strikeforce looks slightly heavy.

      7. Not sure about Richarlson or Sane and I would upgrade GK. I think there's too much risk with Sane, you could probably juggle those three slots and come out better off, lower risk.

I'd rather Fabianski, they say Cedric may not start , I don't get Jota yet, not proven.. I'd up Jota to , say, Mkhi, and drop Rich..
Stick with that strikeforce though- brutal!

Something not mentioned. Mendy is 0.5m cheaper this year. Bargain. Predict he will be a must-have after a few weeks. This year's Otamendi in fantasy terms.

FBs definitely going to be rotated more than CBs, and I expect Pep to rotate him quite a lot. If he were on a normal team, yeah he'd be a no brainer.

    Ederson
    Mendy / Schlupp / Robbo
    Pedro / Mane / Mki / Rich
    Auba / Arnie / Kun

    Bench: Foster / Mata / Cedric / Wan-B

    Probably Captain Kun.

I think when deciding on your team you have to estimate the average weekly points each player will contribute and try and get a lineup that will give over 60 points per week. The fpl winners for the last 2 years have averaged around 66 points per week.

    I'm currently on this:

    Player, expected ppm, (2017 ppm)
    DDG 4.4 (4.6)
    Azpi 4.8 (4.7)
    Robo 4.8 (5)
Mendy 4.8 (2.9) assuming he matches robo
VvD 4.8 (3) includes Southampton games
    Salah 8 + 8 (8.4)
    Hazard 6 (5.1) 2016 ppm was 6.7
    Ramsey 5 (5.4)
Richarlison 4 (3.3) assuming he plays like he did first half of 2017
    Zaha 4.5 (4.7)
    King 4 (3.3) finished 2017 well and 178pts in 2016

Bench gk fodder, tomkins, Hughes, fodder
Total 63.1 ppm. 2398 sesson total. Would be around top 1k

I used a similar strategy last year although that team had Kane as his ppm in 2016 ppm was 7.5 but last year dropped to 5.9. Finished season on 2374 points. Rank 1380

0.5 itb allows for upgrade king to 7m forward
Also looking to switch DDG to Ederson and VvD to walker for 3 city def from gw3 onwards against 5 teams promoted in last 2 years.

May have to have some placeholders if hazard and Mendy not ready for start. Assuming hazard is still at Chelsea.

thanks, only 18m spent on forwards which is probably the lowest of any RMTs on here, but the numbers still add up to a good weekly score. Of course, its all estimating at this stage, which could be total BS when the season starts for real.

The strategy is correct. Do not put money into attack.
However picking the correct defenders is more difficult that the correct mids.

Agreed, the top 10 defenders last year averaged 4.8 PPM, so it really is a case of identifying who they are and switching to them. The good thing is, I've already got one 6.5m and three 6m, so already have the funds to switch to another one as needed.

Identifying the 5.0 or 5.5 that can get that ppm.
Usually the ones pitched up to 6 or 6.5 are not the ones to go for. But I am finding it hard to hard to resist Robertson and Mendy

They will emerge in the first month. Last year it was Davies, Trippier, Jones and Otamendi.
This year it could be an Arsenal defender, TAA and someone from United, maybe Maguire if they get him.

Its a close call, I had Wood in my early drafts but switched to King. I like the way he finished 2017 and given how he played in 2016 he has shown he can score big before. Also both have nice fixtures and might be on pens too. Given that Burnley also have the Europa League to contend with there is more chance of injury and fatigue so King edges it for me as the safer bet. I also have 0.5 in the bank so should he disappoint and Arnie or Tosun show form its an easy switch.

I'm looking for answer for why Richarlison. He was so bad after first third of season. No goals or assists last 21 appearances. This was not surprising as his SoT %s were awful for someone that took so many shots in dangerous areas

Couple of reasons I like him.
His form under Silva was very good. when Silva departed his form dropped, but also he was apparently fatigued. He had come straight from Brazil and their league apparently was playing right up until the premier league started so he had no down time. This is his first summer break in 2 seasons.
At 6.5 it’s a cheap price so you’re not investing a lot and therefore don’t require him to perform at the same level as an 8.5 or 9m mid.
I like him as a more known quantity over Jota, Seggesson, Maddison etc. but should any of those prove better it’s an easy transfer.

Wow, that pre-season results page is kind of a shambles. At least 17 matches that have been played don't have updated results. And not that I really want to see more Everton ugliness on there, but their most recent match with Rennes isn't even listed amongst the fixtures.

Any chance of getting that thing updated anytime soon?
