With just over a week to go until the 2018/19 season begins, Watford players aren’t proving to be popular purchases in the Fantasy Premier League community.

The Hornets are one of only two clubs – the other being newly promoted Cardiff City – who don’t have a single player with an FPL ownership of 5% or more.

This isn’t a huge shock, looking at last season’s figures: the Hertfordshire club had the third-worst defensive record in the top flight and only one of their players – central midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure (£6.0m) – scored more than five league goals. Richarlison, meanwhile, departed for Everton last week.

Javi Gracia’s side are third-favourites for relegation with some bookmakers and their form from Gameweek 14 onwards last season – the Hornets won more matches (six) before this point than they did in their remaining 25 games (five) – was that of a team fighting the drop.

Watford’s opening three fixtures this season are enticing, however: home matches against Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace sandwich the Hornets’ trip to Burnley, who could be in UEFA Europa League action either side of that encounter.

Encouraging underlying defensive statistics, the pre-season form of Andre Gray (£6.0m) and a tactical system that encourages their full-backs to attack are worthy of note, too – all of which we will expand on in the article below.

In-depth data on Watford’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

    How does this look:

Schmeichel (if Chelsea. If not Ederson)
Robertson - Mendy (if Schmeichel. If not Bailly) - Davies - Tomkins
    Salah - Sane - Richarlison - Siggy
    Auba - Arnie

    Speroni - WanBissaka - Cairney - Kamara

Agreed. I don't love that. Given their fixtures though I think they are more reliable than any other mids under 9

I'd rather have the following for under £9m Lamela or Moura (until other Spurs assets are back); Pogba when he rejoins Man U; Ramset / Ozil / Mkhi; or even Gross

Agree I think 2 Everton mids is too risky, Everton could have a dull season again, don’t think they will but you’ll regret it if they do

Good but don’t think I would double up on Everton mids.

Richarlison to Pedro or Siggy to Willian/Ramsey

Thanks. I really think Richarlison will explode again under Silva. Not convinced by Willian or Ramsey at all to be honest. I doubt Emery will give Ramsey the freedom Wenger gave him and Willian although great player can blank for weeks.

Davies could become a 4.5 with the likelihood that he'll start as a CB
Cairney can become a 4.5 since I doubt you'll be playing him often
That should provide funds for Siggy>Mane if you wish

Thanks good shout on the Davies CB. Not worth 6.0 in that case.

Siggy -> Mane does look tasty!

          Good suggestions.

          I would do:
          - Siggy to Mane as above mentioned.
          - Sane to Eriksen until it is more clear what Pep will do on that midfield. Eriksen is 100% nailed and I see a great points potential. However, I totally agree it is very important to have some attacking exposure to City, so I would consider Auba out and Kun in.

Eriksen is an easy change to Sane and Kun an easy change to Auba from GW3 onwards.

Seems a cool gameplan for me

Is a front three of Aubameyang, Firmino and Arnautovic worth it?
Would require a defense of only one 6.0 and three 4.5’s as well as a 4.0 - and a midfield of one 4.5 and two 6.5’s:

    5.0 - Button
    Robertson - Cédric - Peltier - 4.5 - Tomkins
    Salah - Sessegnon - Jota - Sané - 4.5
    Aubameyang - Firmino - Arnautovic

I don’t think it’s needed either swap arnie out for a 6 or 4.5 if you really want or swap firming out for zaha and invest in mids

I was putting together a pretty basic spreadsheet earlier, trying to work out whether the worry surrounding Man City rotation is really worth it or if they still come good over a season... And whilst doing that I started to drill down in to the average points for Mids and Forwards, it’s amazing how much more value there is in the mids (and defenders this year)... has made me consider a mid-ranged strikeforce and a premium packed midfield.

Your defensive is way too expensive I would only have 1 (2 at most) 6 mild and swap them for 5 or 4.5 ones

Is Mahrez a gamble or a solid pick do we think? I really want some city attack in my team but I'm struggling to see if it's worth the risk tbh. Could just lump Sanchez in there as a placeholder for when KDB is back.

I think solid enough - as with last season and city miss, might not start every game, but will bring in the points when he does.

I think you should swap Mane to Sane or Mahrez. If you've got Salah, I don't think you need Mane.

Mane is just a placeholder for kdb, and why does having Salah make him any worse?

He doesn't, he's a good pick, seems nailed enough, Liverpool score lots of goals so him and Salah will share the joy no doubt.

Betfair have slashed Smalling’s odds to join Wolves from 33/1 to evens.

Looks that way. Makes room for Slabhead to join United. He would have 90% ownership if that happened.

Seems to be the case. A guy who said Moutinho is going to Wolves a day before any of the journalists said it said that this is happening. Smalling not playing and not training also adds to the case.

Do folks rate Mitrovic? Any time I have seen him play he hasn’t been great, to put it politely.

Even last year he didn’t really pull up any trees in the championship. I don’t think he was even in he top 15 goalscorers.... and the less said about the years prior to that the better!
