Introduction to the article type

With so many RMTs on site, we’re going to start collecting them in these RMT Community Articles.

To start, site regular and moderator Gregor has given us his team, and some explanations of his choices. Feel free to comment on his team.

This is also a place for you to post your team, and please respond to a few others while you’re at it!

Mods have been alerted, and will spend some time on these pages responding.

Let’s try to keep the main article pages free from RMTs!

Gregor’s RMT

Gunn/McCarthy, Fabianski
VVD, Bailly, Mendy, Cook, Wan-Bissaka
Salah, Silva, Mahrez, Mkhitaryan, Ward
Firmino, Zaha, Mitrovic.

Goalkeepers
Two great value looking goalkeepers for £9m with perfect home and away rotation and good home fixtures to start the season. If there’s doubt over the Southampton number one though I may get Foster and bring Cedric in as my £4.5m defender.

Defenders
I’ve gone with van Dijk over Robertson due to slight concern around Robertson missing the odd game around Champions League ties, if Liverpool get a tough group.

Bailly seems assured to start the season and no reason to think he won’t then keep his place. £5.5m to cover United’s defence looks too good to miss.

Mendy looks underpriced due to previous injury problems, cheaper than Walker and should be good for assists.

What I like about Cook is that he’s very bench-able as you don’t expect much from a Bournemouth defender, but he has the potential to produce when called upon and also offers perfect home and away rotation with Wan-Bissaka, who looks a no brainer for bench fodder at £4m – nice fixtures too.

Midfielders
Salah, the obvious GW1 captain, and I (hope) expect Liverpool to make a strong start before the fixtures stiffen.

Mahrez is nice and rested and Silva looks a great price for a guy seemingly nailed on before the family problems, and City’s fixtures from GW’s 2-7 make a City triple up seem entirely sensible.

Mkhitaryan could be an absolute steal at £7m. Tough opening fixtures but just can’t ignore a player of this quality at that price though.

Cardiff’s Danny Ward as £4.5m bench fodder, subject to change; he has a goal threat which is unusual at this price point, and easy to bench as you would expect Cardiff to struggle.

Forwards
Bobby Firmino up top to further tap into the Liverpool attack, with strong early fixtures and a nice price. I’d be surprised if he’s not fit to start GW1.

Zaha, the Palace talisman with pre-season form and strong early fixtures. I do worry he might move though so also got my eye on Tosun for this slot.

Mitrovic just edges out Austin for my third striker slot for now due to surety of starts, funded by trading Sane for Mahrez. Have always liked Mitrovic and should continue to thrive at Fulham now he’s the main man.

Conclusion

Thoughts? Suggestions? Where have I gone wrong, and where have I gone right? What do you suggest I change?

Remember, post your RMTs below in this article. There will be another new RMT Community Article tomorrow.

What do you think of Gregor's team? Where has he gone right, and where has he gone wrong?

For me, it looks like up front, but I can't argue with the logic.

Mkhitaryan and Silva look the risks, and I might move one out for Richarlison. I think Everton will have a good start to the season so I'd try to get some in

It's not bad. I don't like the GKs though, not a fan of rotating them or the picks as stand alones. Ward is not nailed. And unless I'm mistaken Cook is a Bournemouth defender so no way he's a good pick. I like the rest though.

Cheers, Cook is largely bench fodder who rotates home away with Wan-Bissaka when needed, lots of shots in the box last season.

I quite like it and feel like I might miss Firmino and Zaha if I don’t get them...

Definitely not sold on Mkhi for first two games. He’s class and he’ll end up in my team sooner or later, but just not now

I’ve nearly always gone with a cheap rotation, great home fixtures and hopefully make a bit of money on both.

Indeed. I think if Salah shows similar form to last year there's an argument to permacaptain him. I know it rarely worked out when I took the armband off him last season. Kane and Aguero are both captaincy trolls to varying degrees imo, so could actually benefit you not having another big option to tempt you.

I’d say it’s too weak up top and hard to transfer in Aguero/Auba/Lukaku/Kane when needed.

I feel you need a big striker at the £11m price point.

Pretty much set up like my team. Infact I had the same dilemma in keepers and eventually have opted for Cedric - Foster - Fabianski.

Lack of Chelsea may hurt and also not having a 10+ striker means he has committed to making too many moves to bring in Kane/Aguero. Downgrading Silva/Mahrez to a Richarlison/ Jota/ Pedro helps in bringing in Aguero.

I’d just put Heaton and a 4.0 between the sticks. Hate rotating keepers. Good team.

    11. stat
      8 years, 19 days ago

      Too many rotation risks.
Mourinho's CB pairing is unpredictable, Mendy's minutes might be managed due to his recent injury history, Pep has said Silva will play less this season, Mahrez might only be playing until Sterling is back, Mkhi might not even start (Laca has looked much sharper than him in pre-season).

Can I have a RMT of one of my first drafts? Will monitor Mendy during CS, might actually play him against Arsenal. I feel like I’d like to have Zaha...

    Patricio (Button)
    Robertson Tarkowski Cedric (Mendy, Bissaka)
    Salah Sanchez Richarlison Jota Cairney
    Kun Wood (Arnie)

I think you can downgrade your mid slightly and move Arnie to an ever present first XI. Then upgrade your 2nd keeper.

Not sure about Cedric’s minutes. He hasn’t featured much pre-season. Not convinced about United going forward so Sanchez is also a question mark for me. Rest is strong.

I'd personally lose Aguero and Sanchez, bring in Zaha if you like then you'll have £££s to beef up the midfield with a City mid and an Eriksen or Mane etc. Risk is if Aguero goes nuts of course but I suspect there are more points to be had by spreading the budget this year.

Last year I went really big up top and it didn’t work out so well, first time I’ve ever looked to go big at the back from the start but you do seem to get such good value from the defenders and I had to find the funds for Salah from somewhere.

Can always go firmino to 11m by transferring in a 6-4.5 defender so it's major issue playing with one heavy up top considering same of ings go to palace

Yeah, I’ve got Mkhi though so probably wouldn’t want to double up on Arsenal and Aguero too prone to being rotated so have gone with the cheaper mids rather than risk it with an £11m player.

    Here's an RMT for you.

    My considerations are:

    A) better options than Foster Hennessey?
    B) Is Mendy/Alonso the best use of a £12.5 def budget?

    Foster Henessey
    Mendy Alonso Tomkins Cedric Dunk
    Ralls Mhki Salah Jota Stephens
    Auba Zaha Aguero

    £0.0itb

I wouldn't go Alonso, some doubt over his minutes I think.

Otherwise looks strong. Very strong up front.

I really can't decide on keepers so I'll stay out of that

I wouldn’t fancy the Palace double up at the back, Fabianski rotates well with Foster though.

Mendy and Alonso could both be gold but with Chelsea reverting to a back four I might wait and see on Alonso for now.

How confident is every one of their players just returning to their clubs for the start of the season from the World Cup, like Firminho and D Silva and Aguero for example? Or is it better to play 1st team guaranteed starters who either came back from the World Cup early or didn't go and do an early WC?

Yeah, Mendy might not make GW1 but they’re at Arsenal so I could live with that, hopefully he’ll become a mainstay for the plum fixtures after that though.

PLEASE GREGOR PICK MY TEAM TO BE RMT'd

    Ederson
    Robertson - Coleman - Cook
    Salah - Mahrez - Erisken - Cairney
    Auba - Arnie - Tosun

    (Boruc - Cedric - AWB - Stephens)

Coleman will probably become Bellerin in a few weeks. I envisage playing 3-4-3 / 4-3-3 with Cairney and cheap defenders rotating.

    Ederson
    Bailly Coleman* Robbo

I don't think you need rotating keepers, or even a playing second keeper, before the first Wildcard. So I would stick with just one of them, Fabianski. Although I think Patricio may pick up more points over the first 8 weeks judging by West Ham's fixtures and the fact they had the joint worst defence in the league last season.

VVD and Wan Bissaka I like. Mendy I also like, although I'd be watching the Community Shield closely on Sunday to establish if he's match fit yet. Bailly seems most likely to start for Utd, but random benchings are only a game away, and Utd's defence I suspect next season will regress. There's a fantastic article here which explains why: https://statsbomb.com/2018/08/manchester-united-season-preview-2018-19/ . I'd never pick a bournemouth defender, Eddie Howe doesn't really do clean sheets, its all about attack. I think there's other 4.5's who offer you more chance of clean sheets, Tomkins certainly has the fixtures and goal threat, although I appreciate he doesn't rotate with Wan-Bissaka!

Salah, Silva and Mahrez I can't argue with. Although the city mids will need monitoring for signs of increasing rotation. Miki I'm not convinced will start, he seems to be competing with Ozil for a slot from whats been going on in the pre season games. I think Ramsey would be more nauiled and offer similar threat, when not injured of course 😉 Ward is fine if perma benching, although I think theres a lot of reasonably interesting 5.0 mids who could work in a rotation policy.

Firmino and Zaha look good, although I'd rather have an in form Arnautovic who is owned by 30% of the game than an unproven at this level Mitro, for just 0.5m more.

I assume you will be playing a rigid 3-4-3 in this setup? In which case it doesn't matter whether cook rotates with Wan _Bissaka or not, as both will be on your bench anyway. You may as well have another 4.0 defender (Peltier) in that case, as Wan-Bissaka and Ward look nailed to play every week which is probably adequate bench cover anyway. If you wanted a more flexible 3-4-3/4-3-3, I'd keep Cook, upgrade Ward to a 5.0 and downgrade Miki, so that you could have a 4 way rotation for one spot between Cook, Wan-Bissaka, a 5.0 mid like Cairney/Neves/Kenedy and whoever you downgrade Miki for.

Rigid 3-4-3 yeah but the other defenders are there to cover any injuries/rotation etc which is why I prefer one of them to be at home when called upon rather than having both potentially having tricky aways.

Mitrovic has scored goals and looked good at this level before and hoping he will now thrive at Fulham, could be a nice differential.

Wow, very cheap up front obviously but I don't hate it. Not sure I'd ever play a 442 though so it's difficult for me to really rate this.

First I started with Auba up top and then I realized Laca was better value and now I see Eriksen is a better option at that price haha.
I was never a fan of 442 but I don't really see the value in the premium attackers for now!

    Would you guys RTM?
A lot of budget sacrificed in the midfield on first team, but that would also open for easy changes once the WC squad are back.

    Which team and why?

    A:
Foster (Boruc, or any other 4.0 GK)
    Luiz, Mee, Cedric (AWB, Scheletto)
    Mane, Richarlison, Salah, Jota, Sanchez
    Aguero Tosun (Kamara)

    B:
    Ederson (Foster)
    PVA, Robertson, Luiz, Mee (AWB)
    Mane, Richarlison, Salah, Jota (Mooy)

Would you recommend any 4.0 GK though, or are they all second string?
Not sure whether I should sub Cedric for Tomkins etc., as I want my 3rd def to be nailed in case Scheletto/AWB doesnt make starting 11.

I am for sure in the 4.5 + 4.0 camp and I am going with Button as my 4.0. He is very likely to be second choice and in my opionion probably also the 4.0 that is most likely to overtake the current number 1.

Moses is definitely not nailed. Daniels will also be out as new signing Diego Rico seems to be fit enough already to claim the left back spot on GW1. Double Arsenal attack is risky with those first two fixtures, I'd wait to see how they play and how they line up. Kane not guaranteed to start GW1.

      Very strong at the back.

Probably one of the most balanced. I think I’d have a nightmare knowing who to bench.

Salah is my biggest area of dismay. I am the king of differential but with 50.8% ownership he's impossible to ignore. I want to sack him off and if he has a dismal first 2 GW's I will do just that in exchange of Arn to Aub and Salah to Mane.

I always contribute to group chats.....having said which it's in meme form and rarely spoken word.

Understandable but if he goes mental like he did last season how quick and how easily are you going to be able to include him in your squad if not from the off? 13 mil is only attainable with due care and attention prior to GW1

I’m completely with you on the Salah to Mané Arn to Auba. That’s exactly what I want to do.

I’ve even been tempted already having seen Mané take penalties in pre season. But yes, the ownership is killer... and therefore feel Salah is essential.

Not bad at all, Bailly and Pedro are cheaper ways into United and Chels respectively but Pedro's uncertainty of game time even without the big hitters early on, and United's uncertainty in the dressing room would have me looking down the road.

Silva, not sure of his part and if he will be the fantasy god he has been known to be in latter years.Very strong midfield having said which with room for maneuver when Sanchez undoubtedly does jack all and you decide to ship him as will all other owners 😉

Sanchez is very much placeholder for KDB with Silva to Ramsey/Mkhi.

But I really want to capitalise on Sanchez up top and I’m happy to gamble at the moment.

Can I have a tentative RMT? I am pretty happy as is but unsure on Pedro and a weak bench for the moment

    Begovic,

    Vestergaard,Azpilicueta,Tomkins Robertson

    Pedro,Salah, Pogba,Eriksen

    Zaha,Agüero

    Bench
    Hamer,Bonatini,Peltier,Kouyaté

Pogba wont be starting from the off so i would get rid of him for the time being at least. Eriksen is a great inclusion and a fantasy G. I'd change Robertson with VVD as his returns will be seen early on and they're the same price. 2 strikers starting scares me. Downgrade Salah and upgrade attack?

        Fair points indeed,

My second draft looks like this? I like like the potential Mhki provides an having a solid striking treo.

        Pickford
        Azpilicueta,Tomkins,van Dijk
        Pedro,Mané,Mkhitaryan,Eriksen
        Firmino,Zaha,Agüero

        Bench is fodder

Thank you for the advise, having Salah is tempting but limits your overall pool of premium choices.
