Well past the halfway point, we are now ready to resume normal Fantasy Eliteserien service. We look ahead to upcoming Gameweek 18, overshadowed by the start of the FPL season, potentially giving managers a chance to catch their opponents out.

Chip-review

As a little review, we’ve looked at the Eliteserien chips to delve into their power and possibilities, here by looking at the maximum potential from the first half of the season.

Park the buss: Let’s get the obvious one out of the way: Park the Buss was a massive chip early on, as the double gameweeks in rounds 4 and 6 set up some huge scores for a lot of managers. Maximum payout for these gameweeks were 76 and 82 extra points respectively, and with a huge number of points for favourite players in gameweek 6.

2 Captains: Nailing your captain choice is always a difficult endeavour, but nailing 2 choices had some big potential if you targeted the double gameweek in gameweek 4. Gjermund Åsen alone picked up 30 points, with his teammate Kent-Are Antonsen delivering on a further 17; a potential 47 points there for the taking. Åsen was, at this point a popular choice, so quite a number of managers got a piece of this action as well.

Striker rush: Defying logic, the budget options take this one away, with a whopping 46 extra points being up for grabs in both gameweek 15 and 16. Central to these hauls are Molde youth star Erling Braut Håland, hauling 6 goals and an assist over the 2 gameweeks for 21 and 16 points respectively. He did this while Manchester United, amongst others, scouted him from the stands. Around him other budget names packed in some scores, with Frank Boli (Stabæk), Runar Espejord (Tromsø), Bendik Bye (Kristiansund), and Kristian Fardal Opseth (Bodø/Glimt) all scoring in double digits. While many might have had Håland in their side, few capitalised fully on the chip-opportunity for these rounds.

Gameweek 18 feature matches

Rosenborg – Stabæk
(Sunday, 5:00 P.M.)
Having sacked their head coach and his assistant, the caretaker coach set about adjusting the Rosenborg midfield somewhat, flipping the V for the midfield 3 and giving Mike Jensen the advanced number 10 role. This showed immediate effect as he netted a goal and banged one off the crossbar in their recent away clash against Ranheim. Jensen also showed some signs of form against Celtic in the champions league qualifier, and finally looks a decent option at his now 9.3 price tag. With their top 3 wingers on the injury-list, budget option Jonatan Levi is getting a lot of gametime, and has showed a lot of promise. We’re looking at him to break out against league straglers Stabæk this weekend. The lack of true wingers has also opened the striker spot for Alexander Søderlund, but he still looks a bit rusty and struggles to find the net. Niklas Bendtner is now out wide and not looking a big threat either. Birger Meling however firmly stakes his claim as the Eliteserien equivalent of Alonso, as he is storming up and down the line like a winger, seeing a lot of action in the box, and even netted a goal at Celtic Park in the qualifiers.

Molde – Brann
(Sunday, 5:00 P.M.)
Brann have been stumbling and are not looking as solid as they were in the first half of the season, but still look mighty strong. This matchup will be a true test as in form Molde are closing the gap fast to rejoin the title race, led by young star Erling Braut Håland and a solid midfield line. We’re looking at Eirik Hestad and Magnus Wolff Eikrem in the Molde midfield as big options as well. From Brann, Gilli Rolantsson once again scored in the last match, showing big potential. They have not had many penalties, but Wormgoor still looks a decent pick, and last match their midfield virtuoso Fredrik Haugen showed class with a great free kick in the back of the net.

MrKlin says..

In the midst of Europa League qualifiers, teams like Rosenborg, Sarpsborg, and Molde have hit the back half of the season running, looking to have picked up some form by their earlier resuming of play. This has resulted in good looking scorelines for the trio, but also offers rotation headaches for managers looking to get players in. Rosenborg and Molde are well covered, but Sarpsborg are, in addition to their qualifiers mid-week, heading in to a tough couple of games hosting, Lillestrøm and then away to Brann. Despite their form you might want to think twice about investing here, but putting Patrick Mortensen and Kristoffer Zachariassen on the watchlist now might be advisable. A huge home game for IK Start who, despite getting thumped by Brann, are showing signs of turning it around under new management. Winger Kevin Kabran is once more looking enticing and their next fixture is at home against a Ranheim team who are a bit out of form. An outside punt on Elliot Kack can also be considered, and at 4.2 this could be a good pick to free up some cash should you need it. Also have a look at Haugesund’s premium defender Alexander Stølås, who has scored good points in 3 of the last 4, and has some good fixtures coming up in his next 3.

Scout Picks

MrKlin’s picks for Gameweek 18

Bråtveit
Meling – Tønne – Stølås
Jensen – Akintola – Nguen – Levi – Kabran
Braut Håland – Pedersen

Thoughts on Hestad vs Aursnes? Stats according to Sofascore (not always correct):

    Hestad - 7.4m, 18 games of 60 mins+: 4G/6A, 16 shots (5 on target), 28 key passes, 6 big chances created
    Aursnes - 6.2m, 15 games of 60 mins+: 7G/3A, 17 shots (9 on target), 32 key passes, 4 big chances created

Not too sure about those shots-on-target stats, but Aursnes wins and returns even better price adjusted.
Wasn't sure about continuation but Molde on a roll and another goal tonight suggests it could. Don't think Eikrem's a threat to that position, but any new signings a risk?

For extra ref - Both are 2 yc away from a suspension, Hestad had 0.19 xA per 90 vs 0.25 actual. Don't know about Aursnes, or their xG info: https://twitter.com/KroneBall/status/1027642355334238211

The biggest risk now is that they advanced in Europa League yet again and have a big squad (especially at CM). Rotation very likely.

Both should be good picks, Aursnes could be on penalties when Håland isn't on the pitch.

Fair point on rotation. If he's in Sunday's lineup may just get him then use transfer next week to finally lose Brynhildsen for a better filler if/when not starting. Guess the bigger problem now is Rosenborg and Sarpsborg also have those playoff games on 23rd and 30th.

Yeah. Got in Håland, and sticking with Hansen, Jensen, Halvorsen and Askar. If there are rotation everyone will get hurt as all those team have popular players.

If they were out of the EL I would have been looking at another player from all three teams I think.

I need to be careful with Hovland, Muhammed, Bendtner, Håland. Didn't expect them all to progress tbh. Just not sure about Rashani's continued prospects, Brynhildsen has to go. Other option is losing Bendtner as proving a huge waste of funds - was planning L-Olsen but Bamba move making me wonder how he'll do at a better team if starting. He's incredibly selfish which is frustrating to watch but good for fantasy.

Rosenborg ease through to the Europa League playoff, Jensen and Meling played the full 90 and must be mighty tired now, Hedenstad, Trondsen and Levi taken off early to get Helland and Konradsen match-training again.

Molde also cruised in a playoff spot, 3-0 home vs. Hibernian, Håland with 2 goals and an assist, on fire, Aursnes scores yet again as well.

Sarpsborg also in playoff after managing a 1-0 win away thanks to a late Mortensen goal, an upset at over 7.20 at certain bookies...

Look for european rotation to keep up...

      Rosenborg:
I am not worried about Meling and Jensen. With their physical conditions they can easily manage two games a week. Hansen also seems like a safe bet. Would be more worried about Hedenstad back from injury and Levi with Helland back lurking.

      Molde:
They have momentum now so big rotations from them in Eliteserien doesnt seem wise. Their recent performance doesnt shows any sign to fatigue. Of course there will be some rotations to keep the fatigue away but not rotations galore.

      Sarpsborg:
Seems like the worst team rotation wise. Maybe they understands that they are the underdogs for top 3 in the league, of the 5 teams up there, and are focusing most on Europa League.

What is the likelyhood of a blank and double gameweek ?

I still have my bus to park somewhere 🙂

We should know fairly soon. The only really likely event that will happen, is if one (or more) of the 3 teams now in EL playoffs get a match postponed. Outside of that I don't really see anything that would cause another blank/double short of nature screwing over a match.

Cheers. Yeah, have the same concern. there's a lot of talk about strømsgodset being on a roll though, the atmosphere in the squad being fantastic due to the new coach, people smiling and being happy at the training grounds... scoring goals for fun is the result. it SHOULD be an easy win, but Start's coach Rekdal has a gritty mentality. I'll probably hold.

Which weeks are you contemplating on using the chip? Toying with the idea of Spissrush this gw instead

        1. MTPockets
          7 years, 11 months ago

Maybe Brann/Rosenborg home vs SAN gw23/25. I've already used up spissrush though, and would depend on getting in the right team attacking contingent ahead of the chip which I'm increasingly not sure is my priority.

          Rekdal joined 1st June so 2W, 2D, 3L. After 2W, 1D, 8L previously.
But still zero away clean sheets, so don't let me put you off what might be a great idea if you think so.

          1. MTPockets
            7 years, 11 months ago

Haugesund vs STB gw20, maybe Tromso vs STB gw22 are other options.
STB also have zero away clean sheets, and only one in total (same as SAN).

Thanks for the stats. Zero away clean sheets is a critical point here. Saw their performance against Brann, and their defending was quite bad. If Strømsgodset can keep their form up, this could be a slaughter.

for me as well, did Lehne Ohlsen in last week. He was a crossbar away from getting a return, so maybe he'll do something at home this time.

a bit off topic, but apparently Smarason (listed as a mid) is playing up top, and he's like 5.5. If you don't go Lehne Ohlsen and need a cheap decent mid sometime.

I got rid of Skålevik this week. Don't want to go into a guessing game of who starts – I don't think Bamba will start right away, but can see Skålevik being subbed (even) earlier on now, and maybe not starting the next or the one after.

I have been looking to sell Skålevik for a while. Hopefully it's possible to do Skålevik>Bamba for next week, but I'm not 100% sure how it's going to play out.

Bamba has definitely not been bought to sit on the bench, but they could ease him in.

Who would you play out of Stølås, Akintola, Nilsen and Hestad? Currently on Stølås and Nilsen (and 5-2-3).

And would you play Vasyutin vs Brann or McDermott vs RBK?

    1. MTPockets
      7 years, 11 months ago

Assume you mean L.Nilsen? If Hestad's starting I'd play him + Stolas. Would try to play Akintola as well.
GK - probably McDermott just because he seems to be getting a lot of bp recently.

I'd go Stølås and Hestad (monitoring the pre-deadline lineups to make sure they start)

Goalie I'd go Vasyutin, he is fresh in but has shown some amazing stuff so far, worth a punt as both those goalies are in for a rough day at work..

Håland ready for Red Bull Salzburg, but not going there before 1st of January!

Which moves are you eyeing up this GW? Who are you captaining?

The Norwegian teams impressed in EL midweek, with Rosenborg, Sarpsborg and Molde all progressing. Sadly it means increased chances of rotation for all those three teams, so be wary of that.

A few players I would have included in my WC

          GK: Vasyutin (Sarpsborg), Deumeland (Start)

Def: Stølås (Haugesund) and Tønne (Ranheim). Wormgoor (Brann) still on penalties and worth considering, Meling (Rosenborg) attacking as ever, but very expensive now. Askar one of Sarpsborg's best players and OOP, but rotated a lot recently because of EL. Granli (Stabæk) 3.8 if you want a nailed defender who's going to sit at the end of your bench every week.

          Mid: EUA (Strømsgodset), Halvorsen (Sarpsborg

Espejord flagged so might jump on the Håland wagon now he's staying. Could be a captain option, otherwise it'll probably be Pedersen again.

If not then Skjerve to Stølås, but that can probably wait for the wildcard as the latter isn't really fixture dependent. Need to work out which teams to bank on the the home stretch if I'm to match last season's finish.

Not sure how reliable but rbkweb suggesting Bendtner rest/Jebali start, so would definitely check line ups:

I did these (can't do it near deadline):
      Bendtner -> Håland
      Aasmundsen -> Aursnes
      => 6,7 itb
I'm eyeing up at GW 21 Kone -> Ohi (when did Gytkjaer return, Stabaek has tasty fixtures coming up).

Seems like Bamba could go straight into the starting XI.

    1. MTPockets
      7 years, 11 months ago

Think they'll randomly rotate, change up something else in formation, or Skalevik's just dead as an option?
Seems a weird priority for Brann imo.

      1. Niemi
        • 12 Years

I like Skålevik, he's local and a hard-working striker but he's not top quality. Bamba cost a lot and is a great striker. He'll replace Skålevik IMO, but we could still see some rotation probably depending on how Bamba perform.

LAN (the Brann manager) is a proper 4-3-3 manager so we'll definitely not see a new formation.

        1. MTPockets
          7 years, 11 months ago

He looked good in the games I've seen. Still joint 3rd highest goals. Considering Bamba if Bendtner's out, but will probably wait for a while.

Obviously wait for lineups, but if rbkweb says he'll get a rest then I'm fairly sure he will.

              7 years, 11 months ago

Yep just thinking L.Olsen instead for now, or Molde and worry about Bendtner later.
I know it's not fpl-rational but can't stand watching Bamba play so a little loathe to buy him as will ruin enjoyment of their games.

Don't think Skålevik is that highly rated by Brann. Think I read he had the opportunity to go to Start on deadline day.

He had the chance to go, but decided to stay and fight for a place. Didn't want to leave them while fighting for 1st.

He'll probably go to start during the winter IMO, Start really want him.

Nice. Rosenborg doing my fantasy head in, but great potential picks. Smarason's one I have pencilled in.

Ouch, Jebali not looking very hot... touch, technique and pace are decent, but he has not managed much in the way of passing and positioning yet. Had a nice ball through to Helland that should have been an assist though.

Still, getting goals off both Smarason and Kabran so far is ok I guess.

My WC ended up being a complete flop. I should've kept Boli and played Wormgoor over Håland with the weakened lineups from Molde and Sarpsborg. Instead I brought in Lehne Olsen and Leke James. I'll probably get in Håland and Boli over the next 2 rounds.
