Sadio Mane the star of the show as Liverpool hit West Ham for four

All four of the goals scored in Sunday’s lunchtime kick-offs, perhaps unsurprisingly, came courtesy of one side, as three teams began their 2018/19 campaigns with clean sheets.

Sadio Mane upstaged Mohamed Salah and co with a brace in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over West Ham United, who saw Marko Arnautovic slope off in the second half with a possible injury.

Southampton and Burnley played out a goalless draw on the south coast, meanwhile, though the early withdrawal of Cedric Soares saw the Portuguese defender miss out on the clean sheet points.

Our penultimate Scout Notes of the weekend focuses on the main Fantasy talking points at Anfield and St. Mary’s.

Liverpool 4-0 West Ham United

  • Goals: Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Sadio Mane (£9.5m) x2, Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Andrew Robertson (£6.0m), James Milner (£5.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m)

Liverpool’s much-owned attacking trio all delivered returns as Jurgen Klopp’s side strolled to a 4-0 victory over an uninspired West Ham.

It took only 19 minutes of the match at Anfield for the seemingly inevitable to happen: Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) on hand to tap home a low cross from Andrew Robertson (£6.0m), the Scot’s fifth assist in his last nine appearances for the Reds. That strike was also Salah’s 20th league goal at Anfield in as many starts.

Salah could so easily have had a second goal in the first half, too, with Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) denying the Egyptian from point-blank range after he was played in by Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Sadio Mane (£9.5m) was to score on the first day of the season for the third year in a row, tapping home a James Milner (£5.5m) cut-back after the veteran midfielder had salvaged a deep Robertson cross.

Mane grabbed a second in controversial circumstances, finishing from an offside position after Firmino had poked the ball into his path.

Substitute Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m) capped off Liverpool’s victory with two minutes of normal time remaining, tapping home after Milner’s corner had been deflected into his path by Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m).

While Liverpool’s starting front three had a familiar look, Klopp’s second-half substitutions gave Fantasy managers a first proper glance at how the Reds could line up without one of their exalted trio.

Firmino was the first of the three to be hooked and his 68th-minute departure – Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) replacing him – saw Salah move to the centre, Mane switch to the right and Naby Keita (£7.5m) push up from the central midfield to the left flank.

Keita impressed in both positions, but Klopp stated after the match that he sees the summer signing from RB Leipzig featuring mostly in the centre, at least in the short term:

He can play different positions of course, but I think No.8 is his best in the moment, so that’s all cool.

Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m) replaced Mane on the right in the final ten minutes, with Sturridge sent on for Salah in the centre-forward role as the match entered its closing stages.

Klopp also provided an update on Dejan Lovren (£5.0m), who missed Sunday afternoon’s victory, after the match:

He is not fit. Let me say it like this, last year he already had a few problems with that but he could obviously play – and played really good.

Recovery days were always enough then it was not a problem and he was in the next session again. We did not train a lot in the end of the season, of course, because we were more or less constantly playing, but he played constantly.

Now in the World Cup, [playing] three times [for] 120 minutes it got a bit worse, but I am pretty sure it will settle in the next one, two or three weeks. In that time he can probably for sure train already, but not the full programme, so that will then take time.

In the end, it is serious but not that serious, so it’s not that we need to be afraid that it will take him until whenever. In the moment he is not available, that’s true.

Joel Matip (£5.0m) and Ragnar Klavan (£4.5m) both missed out on the match-day squad through injury.

West Ham’s dismal afternoon was worsened by the sight of Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) – owned by over 20% of FPL managers – gingerly making his way from the pitch with a quarter of the match remaining.

The Austrian, who reportedly passed a fitness test before the game, was replaced by Andriy Yarmolenko (£7.0m) on 68 minutes but – as was the case with Richarlison yesterday – there were no clues in his manager’s post-match press conference as to the extent of Arnautovic’s problem.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) meanwhile was also missing from the 18-man squad, but again, Manuel Pellegrini failed to elaborate on his left-back’s absence after the defeat.

The Hammers began the match in the same 4-3-3 formation rolled out in much of pre-season, but their first-half struggles led to a change in system at the break: Declan Rice (£4.5m) was sacrificed for Snodgrass, who played just off Arnautovic in a 4-2-3-1.

Among the headline set-piece news was Jack Wilshere (£5.0m) taking two of the Hammers’ four corner-kicks, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m) going close with a direct free-kick attempt for the hosts.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson: Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Gomez, Robertson: Milner, Wijnaldum, Keita: Salah (Sturridge 88′), Firmino (Henderson 69′), Mane (Shaqiri 81′)

West Ham United XI (4-3-3): Fabianski: Fredericks, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Masuaku; Rice (Snodgrass 46′), Noble, Wilshere; Antonio, Anderson (Hernandez 62′), Arnautovic (Yarmolenko 67′)

Southampton 0-0 Burnley

Clean sheets all round at St. Mary’s – except for the 8.2% of FPL managers who own Cedric Soares (£4.5m), who was withdrawn on 55 minutes as part of a double substitution by Mark Hughes.

Cedric’s participation in the match had been in some doubt due to illness, but there was no suggestion that his substitution was anything other than tactical, with the Saints switching from a 3-4-2-1 to a flat-back four upon the Portuguese wing-back’s departure. Stuart Armstrong‘s (£5.5m) withdrawal in the same reshuffle was injury-related though, with the former Glasgow Celtic midfielder limping off after picking up a knock.

Danny Ings (£5.5m) was thrown on for his Saints debut in place of Armstrong and impressed, providing a fantastic opportunity for Jack Stephens (£4.5m) and going close himself with a rising drive.

Hughes spoke highly of the deadline day capture from Liverpool:

You saw Danny’s clever play today, linking and retaining possession. He allowed us to move further up the field and that augurs well. We’re looking forward to getting him up to speed.

Having played nearly all of pre-season with a three-man backline, Hughes faces a dilemma or two ahead of the trip to Everton next weekend.

The Saints looked far better after a switch to 4-4-2 in the second half, with Stephens moving across to right-back and substitute Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.5m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.5m) providing width on the flanks for Ings and Charlie Austin (£6.0m)/Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m).

Mario Lemina (£5.0m), whose sum attacking returns in 2017/18 amounted to one goal and an assist, was notable for his involvement in the Burnley box and registered four attempts on goal.

Burnley were worthy of a point having been the better of the two teams in the first half and producing a solid defensive display in the second 45.

Ben Mee and James Tarkowski (£5.0m) were as excellent as ever at the heart of the defence, though the former was indebted to a goal-line clearance from Ashley Westwood (£4.5m) after almost putting through his own net.

Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) and Sam Vokes (£5.5m) started on the bench as Chris Wood (£6.5m) ploughed a lone furrow up front, though both strikers were introduced as substitutes late in the match. Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m) began the match as Wood’s main support from midfield, as Sean Dyche reverted to the 4-4-1-1 system he used at the start of 2017/18.

Joe Hart (£4.5m) intriguingly began the game for the Clarets between the sticks, with Tom Heaton (£5.0m) fit enough to take his place among the Burnley substitutes.

Speaking of the former Manchester City shot-stopper, Dyche said:

He’s a very experienced keeper and he’s been bought in for a reason to challenge Tom, firstly, because of the injury to Popey, and now Anders.

He has to keep his mentality, his focus, and he did, and when called upon, safe hands, and a mature performance. But he’s a top keeper, simple as that, and I’m very fortunate to have top keepers and top people.

That Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) finished the match with six saves and three bonus points said much about Burnley’s goal threat, with Hendrick and Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) being denied by the Saints goalkeeper and Jack Cork (£5.0m) unlucky to have an effort ruled out for offside.

Southampton XI (3-4-2-1): McCarthy; Hoedt, Vestergaard, Stephens; Soares (Elyounoussi 56′), Romeu, Lemina, Bertrand; Armstrong (Ings 56′), Redmond; Austin (Gabbiadini 72′)

Burnley XI (4-4-1-1): Hart; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward; Gudmundsson (Taylor 87′), Westwood, Cork, Lennon; Hendrick (Barnes 76′); Wood (Vokes 73′)

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

What are your biggest takeaways from GW1?

Wingbacks had really big scores, With Mendy and Robertson showing why they have premium price tags. Who do you expect to keep up their form in this position?

Forwards struggled to score points almost across the board, with popular pick Aguero failing to square the ball for KDB for a sure goal. Are you worried? Are you looking at moving funds out of your forward line?

And what about the cheap midfield options, with Kante, Jorginho, and Neves among those who scored well?

What have we learned, and will this impact your transfer plans for this week?

As a reminder, please keep RMTs and GTGs (good to go posts) to the most recent RMT collection:

True, but let's be positive about it: We are all laser focused on fantasy football here. It is such a simple point but we are all so thorough and driven to do well, so you would expect everyone to be active and make moves rather than laid-back. Impatience is not a bad thing some times. We just have to avoid blindly following the herd and think for ourselves. I'm always going to stay positive about this FFS place.

I'm not suggesting anyone should be laid back. In fact, they shouldn't.

What I'm saying is that at this stage in the game, after just one GW, it's more how quickly people have lost faith in their existing players that baffles me, not which players they actually want to bring in.

It's perfectly normal to be interested in Richarlison, he had a good game. But you spend a month doing your homework and pick Jota for a reason and lose faith after one game, even after he gets an assist? (I own neither Jota or Richarlison btw) And what are you going to do if their scores are reversed next week?

Mounie got a brace in GW1 last season. What did he get in the following weeks? Nothing. They're not must haves just because of one brace. Forget about lost points and give more than one frickin week for the players you picked.

I fully agree, and that's how I operate my own team, but people here are being helpful or they are stating this opinion with enthusiasm, so I don't blame them.

They don't really know the future so all speculation here is just a guess anyway...so I understand that you guys don't like the knee jerking.

The important thing is that 0.1 is important. Everyone says that it isn't (Egersdorff and Ville don't care about it so that proves your point), but right now I have zero in the bank so I'm getting the guys that I want...even though I just had all summer to decide on this team and I should let them ride for a while.

Generally though I support your points here!

Its the "Mane is a must" comments with Firmino ignored until next week when he bags a brace and the same bods go "Firmino is a must have".

Lol I know right? Mane's second goal was offside and Firmino missed an absolute tap-in in the first half from Milner's cross. Could've been very different scores. People just chase points, when it's performance that matters.

I haven't learned anything specifically from this week, it's just one week.

While being outcome independent is the goal, it's still satisfying to hit 100+ which I failed to do once last season.

Ist take is GW1 is a bit of a lottery.
2nd is 1 week is too early to tell anything apart from starters.
Kante, Jorginho in particular will give limited points over a season IMO.
      Basically, I learned nothing.

Biggest takeaway was one Chinese: 12 chicken balls, egg fried rice, prawn crackers, chips, extra sweet n sour sauce. A good night. Think robbo, Mendy at PVA are essentials even at this early stage. Think the cheap midfielders had a dream start, but the more defensive options across the season will drop compared to other reasonably priced midfielders I.e. Richarlison. Save the Ft this week, maybe look to bring mane in next depends on how premium strikers do over the next few weeks

I expect Mendy and Robertson to be the two highest scoring defenders this year.

Moving funds away from the strikers was something I considered doing before we started. Still might do it but I'll wait for now because it'll only take an Aguero hattrick to change my mind.

None of those cheap midfielders are going anywhere near my team. Was just a fluke week IMO.

I'm not convinced. Pickford should've saved the free kick and he played against 10 men after that. Always more space to operate in. Definitely worth monitoring though.

It was a bit of a freaky GW. Not every game week has 17 players banging in hauls (11 of those were defenders). As the season goes along all the premium defenders will have bad weeks, and there will be hat-tricks from strikers. My personal plans for transfers is to keep this week (even though I have Gunnarsson) and then in a week or two think of a way to get Kane if he looks to have his feet back under him.

Actually I would say I learnt from LAST SEASON that starting without any premium defenders is a pretty terrible risk reward, given how attacking some of them are and how big the gaps are between the top few teams and everyone else. Mendy + Robbo obviously became best case scenario, but then it's the fact that I can switch to whomever else should I wish.

As always, we can’t draw too many conclusions from one round of fixtures.

Neves may well have scored big solely down to the space he had to attack with given Jagielka’s red card.

Jorginho might not get another penalty till after Christmas.

Kante might resume his usual rate of scoring which is maybe one more goal this season.

Knee-jerking is typical of GW1 but it pays off to keep a cool head and realise that swapping Eriksen (FULHAM) > Jorginho to free up some much needed cash is not a sensible move.

Loading up on Citeh & Liverpool was the correct decision. Just need to evaluate more games to decide if one of those spots should be filled with a Citeh striker or elsewhere....
Have the bottle to play both Palace defenders in their easier games.
Don't make knee jerk transfers after one week to gain 0.1 value.

The key thing was the lack of World Cup resting.

I'm already working on plans to bring in players I'd have ordinarily considered for GW1.

Also, will be interesting how these key players are coping in the spring after their high workload.

Knew the fullbacks would be like this, have five with four hitting double digits so not surprised (even if one was benched) the value is there in defence, we spoke about it enough in the build up, embrace it.

Aguero, Auba & Kane blanking in the same weekend showed that heavy investment in this area at the expense of your overall strength is a dangerous game with Salah also eating up funds, one will do, strikers have to do more for their big points due to only getting 4 for a goal.

Taking nothing from the cheap mids as a lot of defensive players scored who won't sustain it, only one who's hit the radar is Kante, seems Sarri will use him as box to box so he's one to be monitored, could actually become relevant soon.

Biggest take I have taken from the weekend is Raheem Sterling, had only a weeks training & straight in for Pep ahead of Sane, ahead of KDB, stayed on for more mins than Mahrez, looked razor sharp & key to their attacking play, if you're prepared to pay 11m for Auba, Aguero or 10.5 on Hazard, don't believe for one minute that Sterling is over priced because he's proven he can be ultra consistent, he was as close to Salah as any last year for that, he'll be in my team this week if I don't go KDB, expecting another big season from City, they made easy work of Arsenal and Chelsea in the last two, they now play a lot of weaker teams in the next seven, forget the silly bandwagons of players you weren't 100% convinced on before this GW, get on the tried and tested.

Nice points. The theme I'm exploring is that one will do *including* Salah. I'm spreading the funds, although I do have KdB as a regular points cannon 🙂

We haven't learned anything arguably - if the defenders keep it up and the heavy strikers are still dry after GW3, then maybe. Other than that, we learned that Man U, City, Liverpool and Arsenal are exactly the same as last season.

Firmino very nearly hauled and Aguero could have scored in a tougher fixture than he has coming up...cheap defenders (if you got the right ones) matched the premiums too (Shaw, Holebas (I went for Kabasele instead 🙁 ) , AWB) clean sheets for Burnley etc.

Keita takes an extra Liverpool slot but I think he could score very well, Bilva is another one who could tick along nicely. I still think Ramsey and Auba/Lacazette will be great options, not a great game to start for them as expected really.

I think the big name to monitor is Salah. Since most other players hauled this week, his 8 points look fine. For 13 mil that is baseline tbh. If he looks to be producing 5-7ppg would rather look at KDB-Firmino instead of Aguero-Salah and use the 4.5m elsewhere!

Dataset is too small to be making knee-jerk decisions. We don't want any Mounies or Negredos on our hands 🙂 There's nothing on fire in my team and the price changes seem slow so I'm probably happy to roll a transfer.

Having said that, I was not too unhappy with my 0 pointer from KdB (although it was very frustrating that Aguero didn't square it!). He looks as if he will be willing to make the runs and he should reclaim set pieces.

There were even positive signs as a Lacazette owner but he's the one I would be most likely to ditch.

Salah re Mané - Mané is a fantastic player but Salah is the talisman who is unlikely to be rested or rotated. I am willing to pay the extra 4m for the set-and-forget captain option, but I may double up.

      1. Liverpool and City are going to bang teams for fun (had been documented prior to gw1)
      2. Palace have potential (had been documented prior to gw1)
      3. Wing-backs carry value (had been documented prior to gw1)
      4. Don't start with too many premium forwards (had been documented prior to gw1)

Not too much that hadn't been predicted tbh.

Peps comments last year, starting that Sane started more games due to Mendy’s injury. With Mendy back in the side offering width expect Sane to be a risk with a winger more prone to tucking inside being preferred.

With Keita and Mane on the left of Liverpool’s midfield/Attack, both of which took in field will allow a lot of space for Robertson to excel in. Though Trent at 0.5 cheaper who is on freekicks, offers a more goal scoring threat.

Kante, his goalscoring record has consistanly been improving. Part of the Serri system will not only provide the freedom to press higher up the pitch (his best role) allow assists but also as per Sarris Napoli team. The midfielders are expect to attack the box more for pull backs. I would expect him to perform at 6-6.5m level.

Nevas is the standard bandwagon. He’s should be the midfield bench option at best, for price increases. He’s a great player who will have MOTD highlights that cause casuals to jump on him. But realistically he’s a deep lying midfielder in a midtable team who are unlikely to score a lot of goals. (Kante is the better option at the price)

Jorginho. Very similar to Nevas but more adventurous with his passing. He’s unlikely to be on Pens when Hazard returns to the starting line-up. I am swayed that his passing stats, recoveries could make him become a bonus point magnet.

Mendy, robbo and pva are beasts.
There's plenty of choice in midfield at 5-8 million.
The best forwards have yet to show themselves so holding fire on forward transfers is a good idea for now.

      Key learning points
      1) Play the bench boost GW1: your squad will probably be the most thought out & strongest it will be all season (15 starters no rotation). It gets it out the way and gets you off to a good start.
      2) If in doubt about who to bench, play the player with the highest ownership, if the other does better, the pain is less than the other way around.
      3) Don't panic. No matter what you did or didn't do, everyone will make errors across the season, just learn from it and move on.

He's not the next Mahrez, he's a very different kind of player. However, he is now our biggest creative outlet and loves a pop at goal. He will be a revelation this season.

I think judging a team against Liverpool or city is tough. West ham were missing a defensive mid/energy in that CM spot. With all the new additions it will take time for them to gel. I think a score-draw but Im playing King.

I don't think this is a crazy idea. Its going to be very hard for Huds to score and Mendy got forward a lot (obvious by his 2 assists). Disclaimer* Pep was not happy with his lack of discipline - ie almost being a winger.

I think Pep will reign in Mendy. He seemed non too pleased with the defensive side of his game.

Mendy is worth the hype. Certainly in FPL terms. Only issue is his injury history is terrible.

The other issue is the defensive side of Mendy’s game. Pep was not happy.

    Early transfer advice required

    Fabianski / Foster
    Mendy / Robertson / Schlupp / Wan-Bissaka / Bednarek
    Salah / Mahrez / Mkhitaryan / Richarlison / Jota
    Aguero / Arnautovic / King

Bednarek didn't play so looking at shifting him in the future
After next GW Arsenal have a good run of fixtures so want to keep Mkhitaryan
Thinking downgrading Mahrez or Jota to free up some funds

    Thoughts?

I'd be nervous to say essential, but he looked great and is a good FPL pick. Probably won't score brilliantly GW 2, but if he puts in a good underlying performance he should be a popular option

Benched Mendy for Cedric... lol. Would have hit 100 points if I made the opposite decision.
Burns even more because Southampton actually kept the clean sheet I was anticipating, Cedric just wasn't on the pitch long enough to get the points.
