Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers have answered some of your questions in time for your Gameweek 2 preparation.

Key subjects topics have been touched on such as transfer strategies, the unexpected impact of returning World Cup stars and Marcos Alonso’s (£6.5m) impressive Gameweek 1 haul.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 2 Question Time:

FPL General – Has finished in the top 500 in three of the last four seasons and is a big influencer in the FPL Twitter-sphere.

Ben McNair – Australian FPL manager Ben has four finishes inside the top 5,000 so far and is an expert in all things metrics-related.

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

Josh and Brandon from Always Cheating Podcast – The brains behind popular American-based FPL podcast ‘Always Cheating’.

QUESTION 1 – FPL GENERAL

Is Gameweek 2 a definite time to save a transfer unless your team is in dire straits? Considering the planning that goes into an initial squad, is saving a transfer wise?

General: “I always plan to save my transfer in GW2 so that I’ll have two free transfers for GW3 which gives so much more flexibility.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a definite time to save though. Already, there are a couple of players that I want to bring in as soon as possible, Mendy and Mane in particular, which may change my plans this week.

“It’s important to keep an eye on the possible price changes this week as well which could prevent you from making the moves you want to make later in the week especially if you’ve got £0.0m in the bank.

“Saving a transfer is wise, but if there is a player you feel is essential, go get him.”

QUESTION 2 – BEN MCNAIR

With players from the latter stages of the World Cup coming back earlier than expected, is an international break Wildcard the most viable option to bring them in or is there a better time to do so?

Ben: “We feared the worst as the Gameweek 1 team sheets were revealed, but those of us who avoided World Cup semi-finalists got off lightly.

“A rare N’Golo Kante goal may have been what hurt our rank most. Harry Kane lacked sharpness and Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard played just 44 minutes between them. Importantly, the players we did choose tended to perform well. In the wake of it all, the only late returner attracting a lot of early transfers is Paul Pogba.

“The short answer to the question is that we need to wait and see. Using free transfers and the odd judicious hit might see us through the reintegration of World Cup semi-finalists. The Wildcard will be there when we need it.

“It’s nice playing the Wildcard in an international break as there tend to be a few more price changes and injuries and – let’s be honest – we get to enjoy the kid-in-a-candy-store experience over what would otherwise be a barren weekend.

“But, I wouldn’t get hung up on it. When you have several fires to put out and the prospective performance of a Wildcard squad looks a lot better than that of your current squad – that’s the time to play it.”

QUESTION THREE – HOLLY SHAND

How quickly do we jump on cheap bandwagons like Pedro, Kante, Jorginho, Neves or Wilson? Is it wise to wait a week or two or get in early and make some money?

Holly: “I would give it at least another week before jumping on the cheap bandwagons.

“Some were involved in very fortunate goals and face tougher opposition in Gameweek 2. Chelsea host Arsenal and Pedro could well lose his place while Wolves travel to Leicester and therefore won’t have home advantage.

“Moves to these low budget players will probably involve a downgrade, so you’ll still be able to afford them at a reasonable price in the next couple of weeks, if it emerges that they are the real deal.

“Holding a free transfer this week gives much greater flexibility further down the line.

“Keep them on the watchlist for now. You’ve built a team for the season, not just for one Gameweek.”

QUESTION FOUR – ALWAYS CHEATING

Do you think it’s too early to look at getting Alonso or Azpilicueta in the team? I read articles that said they wouldn’t get forward as much as least season but that wasn’t what happened in Gameweek 1?

Josh: “I hate to say ‘it’s too soon to say’ but…it’s too soon to say. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

“The pros: strong upcoming fixtures, Sarri’s Napoli squads were some of the top defensive teams in Serie A, Alonso has great attacking instincts and Azpilicueta has been perhaps *the* preeminent set-and-forget defender for years.

“The cons: Chelsea are still transitioning from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 and the four-at-the-back set-up should, in the long-term, hinder Alonso’s attacking potential.

“The centerback situation is completely unsettled and I don’t expect the team to truly clamp down on defense until it is.

“Also, they were playing Huddersfield, a team with one of the least-potent attacks in the Premier League. Only a week previously, a very similar squad was roundly defeated by Manchester City with Alonso and Azpilicueta not getting forward too much.

“I think the cons outweigh the pros at this point, though if I were going to pick someone in their defense I’d go with Azpilicueta for his consistency, link-up play with Morata, and the fact that he should see more attacking returns as a fullback than he did as a centerback.”

They are calibrating their mathematics i think.
Mendy was on 120+% to rise at around 08:00 today.
At 09:00 he was at 68.3+%
      Now he is at 88.7+%

Not sure - only a minor injury though. Enough to keep him from starting at the very least though. Porch won’t rush him back and if he’s out longer then that obviously plays into Moura’s hands.

For those of you waiting on Jota, massive credit but I don’t get it. LEI, MCI, WHM, MUN next. What exactly are you guys being patient for? Meanwhile Richarlison has high ownership and great fixtures, even Fraser and Pereyra are worth a shout. And a 0.5 upgrade might even get you a nailed Arsenal winger!

Could be a 4-2-3-1 with one of the CMs making way too but not convinced Mkhi is nailed (especially given his poor game). Waiting on Jota allows a decent fixture this week (lei) and more time to assess the options we can switch to. Maddison from Leicester catches my eye though.

So basically you are saying transfer in one of the highest points scorers from last week?
And why are you giving massive credit when you say that you don't understand?
And what does Richarlison's ownership have to do with anything?
      This post confuses me.

      1. ★Kuntheman★
        • 10 Years

I’m saying that there are players in better form with better fixtures, and in Richarlison’s case, scary ownership.
Giving massive credit because they have patience that I don’t have.
As a Jota owner over Richarlison, everyone and their mother had Richarlison in my leagues and especially on FFS. Really did damage to rank, and it looks to be rising. His fixtures make going without him potentially dangerous

It's been one week, where's the form?
It's been 2 days, not 10 weeks of 2 pointers, have you changed every player who got 2 points or less?
Imagine the ground you can catch up when everyone else has Richarlison and he doesn't score for half a season.

          1. ★Kuntheman★
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 12 days ago

Right, but I’m not advocating this sort of thing for all of the players who didn’t perform. For example, I’d be patient with King because he has good fixtures and is generally a top FPL option. I don’t understand keeping Jota in a Wolves team that seemed to rely heavily on crossing from fullbacks, who couldn’t even handle a 10 man Everton team, and now have very difficult fixtures in LEI, MCI, WHM, BUR, MUN. Especially when Richarlison is literally the same price.

    Would love some advice guys.

Davies vs Mendy is really buggying me!
I fear that if I switch to Mendy this week then Davies will scores big (was very unlucky GW1) and Mendy will blank or get benched
Also worried that nearly everyone in my leagues already have Mendy so gettting him wont help me make up ground on them.
Just dont know what to do?
Is sticking with Davies stupid or should I cut my losses now and just get Mendy?

Take out the emotion and the worrying about actively doing something.

Then think to yourself, with your head, "Do I think Mendy or Bavies will score more points over the next few weeks?"

Look at both sides. Then decide.

City have Hudderfield, so Mendy should in theory be able to match or better Davies. Mendy has shown what he can do. It's sometimes more important to stay up with the rest in stead of trying to beat them.

There are some 'templatey' players such as Mendy that I think you should be boring and make sure you have them, same with Robertson etc.

At the start of the season it is easy to get bogged down and suddenly be 40-60 points behind others in 2-3 gameweeks.

Let's talk Virgil van Dijk. This is how good this fella is.

Since making his Liverpool debut, no player has kept more clean sheets in the Premier League than Virgil van Dijk. The Reds haven't conceded a league goal at Anfield since February.

Not to dig out any Liverpool's as per say but this is while:
    - Karius was in goal
    - Lovren was his CB partner
    - Klopp rotated heavily to focus on CL

The only Liverpool player that would confidently walk into our first eleven. Not saying that as a dig, he’s top class. I mocked the price at the time but this business of this window makes that a steal now.

I've got 10 for you. Change my mind.

    1. Richarlison won't score anytime soon and bandwagoners will fail
    2. Sanchéz is on incoming penalties
    3. Pogba is a good pick, but not worth 8.0
    4. King will get more points and minutes than Wilson
    5. Bilva is still starting
    6. You have to have both Salah and Mané (yet I don't)
    7. Mendy is the best backline pick
    8. Hudson-Odoi will get his minutes, he just suffered a minor knock
    9. Robertson is more than a million worth better than TAA
    10. Neves at 5.0 is undeniably too good a value to let go

Picking Bernardo over KDB just feels so wrong, but it seems so right...saving 2.5, getting the biggest form player at City over the last couple of months, and the long-term Silva heir who seems to be phasing him out already. Rotation the only concern, which is never the case with KDB

He costs so little that it shouldn't be too much of a worry as he enables better players elsewhere. To problem is moving from BSilva to some other player, as at that point all the City mids are out of the price range.

The other advantage is at 7.5 you wont be overly mad at yourself IF 1 week he gets benched vs Sane, Sterling and Mahrez.

I've been spoilt by getting a really good GW1 score in that I now don't think I need to make a transfer.

It's this sort of moment though where you can be too lax and then miss out on a good player. I think transferring King to Wilson is a sideways move but other the long term, he could be a much more viable third striker and he provides extra money.

King to Wilson is the definition of sideways
Also, King probably on pens now

King is gonna payoff big time. I’d be patient with him. Wouldn’t downgrade, I’d only consider upgrading to Zaha

Yeah, they are the sort of third strikers that are never going to reward you ever game. It may be a goal every 3 games or worse, but the extra money is a big deal. I just don't want to waste a transfer doing it and next week it could easily be King scoring and Wilson blanking.

I swapped out Mane and Adam Smith to Sanchez and Bailly so whilst happy feel wronged enough to make a transfer.

Getting rid of Sanchez - wasn't impressed and (for me) he's not worth the outlay given what else is out there:
    Who's in
A/ Mane (chasing last weeks points but price rise and flexibility to jump elsewhere)
    B/ Sterling (looked sharp)
C/ KDB (home record, set and forget as can't expect a big return every week)

If lukaku had scored that big chance, would you have been impressed?

The things you said about B and C apply just as much to Mane, surely.

Is it just me that doesn't like other people doing well on FPL?

it's a ranked competition, most people will want to be doing better than others. If others do well then it is direct competition and there is a chance they are doing better than you.

I like it when my mates are doing well, competition is boring if you just run away with it.

How well do we expect Liverpool's defence to do in terms of clean sheets this year? Debating trading out Ederson for another £5.5m or less keeper to free up a City spot for Mendy. I am looking at Alisson but any other suggestions are welcome.
