Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers have answered some of your questions in time for your Gameweek 2 preparation.

Key subjects topics have been touched on such as transfer strategies, the unexpected impact of returning World Cup stars and Marcos Alonso’s (£6.5m) impressive Gameweek 1 haul.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 2 Question Time:

FPL General – Has finished in the top 500 in three of the last four seasons and is a big influencer in the FPL Twitter-sphere.

Ben McNair – Australian FPL manager Ben has four finishes inside the top 5,000 so far and is an expert in all things metrics-related.

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

Josh and Brandon from Always Cheating Podcast – The brains behind popular American-based FPL podcast ‘Always Cheating’.

QUESTION 1 – FPL GENERAL

Is Gameweek 2 a definite time to save a transfer unless your team is in dire straits? Considering the planning that goes into an initial squad, is saving a transfer wise?

General: “I always plan to save my transfer in GW2 so that I’ll have two free transfers for GW3 which gives so much more flexibility.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a definite time to save though. Already, there are a couple of players that I want to bring in as soon as possible, Mendy and Mane in particular, which may change my plans this week.

“It’s important to keep an eye on the possible price changes this week as well which could prevent you from making the moves you want to make later in the week especially if you’ve got £0.0m in the bank.

“Saving a transfer is wise, but if there is a player you feel is essential, go get him.”

QUESTION 2 – BEN MCNAIR

With players from the latter stages of the World Cup coming back earlier than expected, is an international break Wildcard the most viable option to bring them in or is there a better time to do so?

Ben: “We feared the worst as the Gameweek 1 team sheets were revealed, but those of us who avoided World Cup semi-finalists got off lightly.

“A rare N’Golo Kante goal may have been what hurt our rank most. Harry Kane lacked sharpness and Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard played just 44 minutes between them. Importantly, the players we did choose tended to perform well. In the wake of it all, the only late returner attracting a lot of early transfers is Paul Pogba.

“The short answer to the question is that we need to wait and see. Using free transfers and the odd judicious hit might see us through the reintegration of World Cup semi-finalists. The Wildcard will be there when we need it.

“It’s nice playing the Wildcard in an international break as there tend to be a few more price changes and injuries and – let’s be honest – we get to enjoy the kid-in-a-candy-store experience over what would otherwise be a barren weekend.

“But, I wouldn’t get hung up on it. When you have several fires to put out and the prospective performance of a Wildcard squad looks a lot better than that of your current squad – that’s the time to play it.”

QUESTION THREE – HOLLY SHAND

How quickly do we jump on cheap bandwagons like Pedro, Kante, Jorginho, Neves or Wilson? Is it wise to wait a week or two or get in early and make some money?

Holly: “I would give it at least another week before jumping on the cheap bandwagons.

“Some were involved in very fortunate goals and face tougher opposition in Gameweek 2. Chelsea host Arsenal and Pedro could well lose his place while Wolves travel to Leicester and therefore won’t have home advantage.

“Moves to these low budget players will probably involve a downgrade, so you’ll still be able to afford them at a reasonable price in the next couple of weeks, if it emerges that they are the real deal.

“Holding a free transfer this week gives much greater flexibility further down the line.

“Keep them on the watchlist for now. You’ve built a team for the season, not just for one Gameweek.”

QUESTION FOUR – ALWAYS CHEATING

Do you think it’s too early to look at getting Alonso or Azpilicueta in the team? I read articles that said they wouldn’t get forward as much as least season but that wasn’t what happened in Gameweek 1?

Josh: “I hate to say ‘it’s too soon to say’ but…it’s too soon to say. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

“The pros: strong upcoming fixtures, Sarri’s Napoli squads were some of the top defensive teams in Serie A, Alonso has great attacking instincts and Azpilicueta has been perhaps *the* preeminent set-and-forget defender for years.

“The cons: Chelsea are still transitioning from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 and the four-at-the-back set-up should, in the long-term, hinder Alonso’s attacking potential.

“The centerback situation is completely unsettled and I don’t expect the team to truly clamp down on defense until it is.

“Also, they were playing Huddersfield, a team with one of the least-potent attacks in the Premier League. Only a week previously, a very similar squad was roundly defeated by Manchester City with Alonso and Azpilicueta not getting forward too much.

“I think the cons outweigh the pros at this point, though if I were going to pick someone in their defense I’d go with Azpilicueta for his consistency, link-up play with Morata, and the fact that he should see more attacking returns as a fullback than he did as a centerback.”

Was super happy to get out of GW1 with a 85 score. Typically I start poor and grow into the season.
Hopefully can keep the momentum going. Just need to sort my front 3 if they repeat a haul of 3 X 2pts.
All good so far though 🙂

How did we all get on?

84 here, really happy despite a bunch of 100+ scorers here. Looking forward to next GW, with triple City and Pool. Planning on going real Differential (c) and captaining Mendy, and seeing Delph start haha.

92 with 19 points on the bench
Transfered in Jota for Richarlson just before deadline, big mistake.
Strong defense and midfield and a bit lighter up top is the way forward.

Lol great timing for my post below. I may end up captaining salah the most, but it just seems boring to always captain him, if someone else has what is probably a better fixture. Aguero has a stronger case than my player (Mahrez) probably, but City attack at home vs HUD is surely going to produce more points than salah away at palace...

Yeah, what this guy says. Being clever and being stupid weigh each other out for the season. Let's be honest, every single one of us would have come out better last season leaving the armband with Salah. He is fixture, home/away, nuclear-holocaust proof. Although, you buggers have talked me into Kun for this weekend and I am already regretting it. Gah, I have missed this awful feeling these past three months,

humans brains are funny pieces of meat 🙂
IMO Mo will most likely score 300 points this season, fixtures proof great team behind him, take that times 2 and one game times 3 = way over the 600 points mark.you can try and find the right C every week but we know its not easy while Mo is easy all year around. my C option for this year will be the most locked in part playing the game.in the past i always struggled with my C pick but Thanks to Mo not any more 🙂

Also worth noting that Huddersfield have already frustrated City twice last season and they will definitely defend with 11 men.

I can see Palace being bit more attacking playing at home and PVA leaving Salah unmarked while bombing forward at times.

Holebas has a free run at that wing as the Watford midfiled vs Brighton had no wide players. Expect Holebas to be a little less involved once wingers like Deulofeu and Sema are in the side.

Wel yeah, but Holebas provided the needed width. Not just during the goals.
Watford midfield of Hughes Doucoure Pereyra and Capoue, are all CM/CAM. None were wingers.
But if Holebas is taking set peices, could be good value!

    Question regarding Neves:
I remember last year, Hegazi's price rocketed from 4.5 to 4.9 (or 5.1 - I don't remember correctly), although he only had 1 decent first game (15 pts), clean sheet in second game (6 pts), and then a string of bad games followed.
However, whoever invested in him after GW1 got a healthy 0.2 (or 0.3) profit very easily.
I really think Neves will be exactly the same case. Would you agree? Should I bring him in to make money?

No, don't waste the FT just for the sake of catching a price rise imo. You have to also factor in Neves was facing a 10 man Everton for much of the second half. That space to move so freely won't be there next match and he's not going to hit a FK goal each week (that was only his third ever fk goal for Wolves).

Asked this earlier today, but thought I would see if the respons is the same with a different crowd:

"This might sound like a «knee jerk», but I am struggling not to get Mendy in for Azpi.

I am usually a really passive FPL-player, but there are just so many in my cash leagues with Mendy that I am unsure if it is wise to take the risk to go without him.

What are your thoughts on this move?"

If you're saving your transfer and waiting to see how players perform in GW2 to plan your next move then what are you even doing on this site on Monday afternoon. You can't discuss performances from the weekend as one game is too small of a sample size as all of you are saying, so please answer my question without a sarcastic response.

Everton seemed to make some good signings over the summer and I took that as some kind of sign of intent to kick on this season. Hopefully that’s going to happen sooner or later.

I didn’t consider him, but could’ve worked out really nicely having Rashford seeing as he started up top alone. Pity he didn’t perform as well as he can.

I’d get in one of the 6.5’s with nice fixtures or Zaha. Arnie was hooked shortly after 60 mins and didn’t set the world alight.

Not usually one for bold plays but quite tempted by Mendy (C) for the next game week.

I have Salah and Aguero too, but I feel like a clean sheet is at least a 80% likelihood for City, so that’s a minimum of 6 doubled. Not to mention possibility of attacking returns again.

After 91 points this week, I feel like it’s a reasonably safe play to consolidate my good start, whilst Aguero may not start and Palace are a fairly decent team.
