FPL Gameweeks 1 and 2 – A Brief Recent History

A quick look at the “transfers in” column in the Fantasy Premier League game reveals a similar pattern: the top 14 most-bought players of this round all delivered attacking returns in Gameweek 1.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m), whose 78,000+ purchases make him the 15th most-transferred in FPL asset, is the first player to feature in the list who blanked on the opening weekend.

All ten of the most-bought midfielders ahead of the Gameweek 2 deadline found the back of the net on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, while the seven most-purchased defenders all either provided an assist or scored themselves on the weekend just gone.

This knee-jerk brand of transfer activity is nothing new, of course, and hardly restricted to Gameweek 1. With so many “active” FPL managers involved at this stage of the season, however, the bandwagon effect is often more pronounced in August.

With that in mind, we’ve delved back into the archives to bring you a potted history of the statistical trends between Gameweeks 1 and 2, and ask if we should pay heed to the form players on the opening weekend of the season or resist the FPL faddism and price rises.

We’ll also examine the difference between goals scored and clean sheets recorded across the two Gameweeks.

2017/18

Gameweek 1

Players who assisted in Gameweeks 1 and 2 = 4 (Eriksen, Mkhitaryan, Calvert-Lewin, Mahrez)

Teams who kept clean sheets in Gameweeks 1 and 2 = 3 (Huddersfield Town, Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion)

2016/17

Gameweek 1
28 goals (2.8 per match –  average over the season was 2.8)

28 goals (2.55 per match –  average over the season was 2.77)
7 clean sheets
Gameweek 2

Teams who kept clean sheets in Gameweeks 1 and 2 =  4 (Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United)

Thoughts

For the five-year period we have analysed, there is a notable drop-off in goals scored from Gameweek 1 to 2.

Although there was one more clean sheet recorded in Gameweek 1 last season than there was in the following round of matches, nine fewer goals were conceded in Gameweek 2.

The clean sheet counts increased from Gameweek 1 to 2 in the previous four seasons, too, with the number of goals conceded dropping.

It is noteworthy that a significant number of players who recorded attacking returns in Gameweek 1 in 2017/18 and 2015/16 carried their form into their subsequent fixtures, while there were fewer FPL assets who scored or assisted in both of the first two Gameweeks of 2016/17 and 2014/15.

The significance here is that these last two seasons both came immediately after major international tournaments – as is the case in 2018/19.

Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas, for example, were the only two players involved in the 2014 World Cup who delivered attacking returns in both of their first two fixtures of the 2014/15 Premier League season.

Disrupted pre-seasons in the summers of 2014 and 2016, like this year, affected Gameweek 1 in the subsequent campaigns and we have yet to see the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Spurs at full strength.

While the form players of Gameweek 1 this season have understandably – and justifiably – attracted Fantasy interest, the portents from previous campaigns suggest that we can’t expect many of them to replicate their opening-day heroics this weekend – particularly with so many variables still to be introduced (remaining World Cup contingent returning, deadline-day transfers now considered for selection etc).

A cautionary note, too, for the new owners of Benjamin Mendy, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka et al: not one full-back/wing-back has registered attacking returns in both Gameweek 1 and 2 in the past five seasons.

Of course, this is Fantasy football. The much-underestimated component that is pure, unstatistical chaos can make a mockery of our analyses and render this kind of scrutiny an exercise in futility.

The findings above, however, at least provide food for thought for anyone still mulling over a transfer or two ahead of the Gameweek 2 deadline on Saturday morning.

Sanchez to Sterling could work out pretty well for you although I like the idea of saving it until you have two weeks worth of information.

Yeah A or C... Vardy could come good against Wolves. But would be nice to have a double for next week. Not worth getting rid of Sanchez this week with a favourable fixture, better off shifting him next week

Guys, im sad to say i missed the start of the season 🙁 So im just building up my team from GW2 onwards, this is what i have ATM

    Patricio (Hamer)
    Robertson - Mendy - Daniels (Wan-Bissaka, Holebas)
    Salah - Mane - Sterling - Bilva - Richarlison
    Zaha - Wilson (Jimenez)

    0.0ITB

What do you think? Im not sure on my keepers, change Patricio to any other 4.5 keeper that i can start at least the next couple of GWs? :/ And other subs, what would you change? Would you prefer to downgrade 1 mid to upgrade a striker to a premium one?

i’d be worried with no premium striker at all, just means multiple transfers needed if one starts going, especially with city and Arsenal’s fixtures coming up

That's the sacrifice when you get that midfield.
It's easier to transfer value in 2 transfers.

Did you read my post on the last page when I listed the key 9 players in that team to someone on a wildcard? 🙂
I would consider downgrading Jimenez to a £4.5m perma third sub and spend the money on Daniels and a better keeper.

If I was creating a new team I'd forget Pool defense as they have some tough fixtures coming up. Consider Bellerin with Arsenal fixtures after this weekend. I'd ditch Daniels and Holebas (points chasing) too

Give Hart a go in goal maybe. And Wilson I'm not gone on. Madison could be in the side but not sure what mid to sacrifice. Think your team is looking back on last gameweek more so than forward to the future gameweeks

      That McAuley "goal" for one.

The Rooney penalty miss and DCL tap-in you mentioned yesterday hurt a lot. Rival had Rooney (C), Fabianski and DCL in his team. That was the luckiest captain points he ever got - 2 assists, one from missing a penalty and another from a sideways pass to Sigurdsson who scores a screamer. I'm still reeling...

not to me but in a cash league I was in... the year there was a bomb scare at OT & the final game was postponed til the Tuesday.

the guy leading the league had Smalling & his late OG meant he lost the league by 1point... if anyone else scored the OG he'd have still won it. was so harsh!!!

Anfield about 6/7 years ago, I had Gerrard captain, & Suarez too, I think it was midway through 2nd half 0-0 still, Suarez wins a pen, Gerard steps up & drilled it high & wide I was counting 11 x 2 + 5/6 for Suarez, ended up with 1 pt from the pair after a late frustration booking for Suarez, oh & West Brom scored 2 late goals to win 2-0 🙁

Mine was the Gabriel Jesus goal last season that took City to 100 points, netting in the 94th minute against Southampton. I had Jesus, but my mini-league rival had him captain and also owned KDB who got the assist. We ended up drawing the mini-league. I'd clawed back a 100+ points deficit from Christmas time, had calculated my bonus points and was all ready to celebrate until Jesus scored.

Drawing after 38 weeks is not the one, and he won on the technicality of making fewer transfers. Brutal.

The Richarlison goals last week are up there.. had him all pre-season and switched him to Siggy, who gets subbed. I'm still bitter it wasn't Rich that was subbed... he was on a yellow! 😛

When I first started playing the game I remember selling Santa Cruz who then went on to get a hattrick for Blackburn. I nearly stopped playing!

Smalling OG vs Bournemouth, 93rd min, last game of 16/17

Had both DDG and Smalling, needed a CS from United to win a ML. This game was played separately as well due to that bomb scare. That OG cost me the ML and DDG the golden glove :/

      Easy.

A few season back when Man Utd v Bournemouth got postponed. I was top of my ML until late on in the game when my cleansheet for Smalling (which kept me in pole position) disappeared as he scored an own goal and I finished the season 3rd in the ML.

Not a single goal, but certainly Rooney’s 50+ poiny haul in a DGW back in 2009/10 season. I was trying to break into the top 100 and everyone’s team around me was similar and everyone was going Rooney (c).

I decided to go for a differential captain in Valencia who was playing well and was a winger at that time. SAF,in his infinite wisdom, decided to bench Valencia in the first game. It killed any hope I had. Still have flashbacks even today.

Indeed. I was debating doing Cedric to Holebas or Jota to Pereyra before the price rises, but as it would've mainly been for the price rises I decided to hold, as I may be scrambling to get Salah or Sterling soon...

As for H2H - yeah I'm not in any either. I was only in one last year with the same other 3 people as from my regular mini-league (just group of mates basically) but it became boring pretty quickly. I think it would be more fun either with a lot more players (so basically just play each other only once or twice) or just mano a mano like our one.

I made a mistake last season in following the herd a little bit too much first half of the season and ended up 1.9m at the halfway mark (a lot of bad luck along the way tbf!). Second half of the season I tried a few different moves whilst still following the mood on here and I clawed my way back to a more respectable finish in what could have been an absolute shocker!

    Guys,
Is Schlupp's potential being overlooked considering he'll play on the wing, is classified as a defender, and is great £4.5m value?
I suppose the question is how often will he play in the short to medium term? ...

There was an excellent piece carried out looking at what difference ease of fixtures played against scoring points. Simply an easy run of fixtures helps mid priced players. Therefore, expect Silva to score well with United's upcoming fixtures (and possibly Ramsey etc). There is a bigger spread of points available. However, this changes with premium players i.e. captaincy options. Fixtures play very little relevance to points scored. I.e. it doesn't really matter if a player is playing Huddersfield or Arsenal in terms of likeliness to score big points. It has a lot of statistical data to back it up.

He won't tell you who to pick or spoonfeed answers but I guess it is a slightly more statistical way of interpretating data - it won't be for everyone.

Yes, however do be aware that when players get hat tricks it is normally against weak opposition so if you have two premium players it is still worth going for the one with the easiest fixture as your captain.

This is true. However, some people will captain a mid-rated player with a great fixture. E.g. A Richarlson or Arnie. This is very rarely the premium option. You are better captaining Salah away at City than Richarlson at home to Cardiff for example.

I always think with the likes of transfers like Sanchez out it COULD work out but would be you at all surprised if he gets a double digit haul this weekend? If after 1 week you feel this is all of a sudden a good transfer then by all means do it but don't moan if it all goes wrong.

Depends how the player you switch to does. He COULD also score a brace, but how is that useful? It's case a case of having the best option, and hoping you're not on the wrong side of variance as a result.

Thinking of changing Wilson to Tosun, but...

Will Wilson keep penals after missing?
Is Tosun on penals or will Siggi/Baines take them?

    Thoughts?

Liking Everton's run of games mostly, 3 home games in the next four. Richarli can't rake in all the points himself, and Bournemouth could start struggling.

If you wanted Tosun you should have had him from the start. Stick with Wilson

ya I'm very unsure alright! Would it be worth taking him out? What are my suitable replacements?

              1. With KDB injured, B Silva is very enticing.
              2. Mkhi out of sorts atm.
              3. Rich sounds good.
              4. I personally wouldn't double up on two united Mf's (U might need Lukaku very soon)
              5. See how they lineup with Haz this GW

Would you rather have Sanchez this week or Sterling for captain?

      Definitely not Sanchez

Sterling is the better option, but I wouldn't get rid of Sanchez.

Sterling just screams points in that fixture. I'm feeling a 19 pointer. 2 goals, 1 assist, cleanie, 3 bonus.

Sterling I guess bt getting it wrong will be costly if other captain options return points

    Draft team related question:

Who would you be willing to swap KDB for at this point?

£100 entry so fairly big desicion...

I assume this one will be like 50/50 in comments but i'll ask anyway... play PvA or Peltier this week?

    1. jia you
      • 7 Years

50/50, should be more like 80/20 imo! Cardiff are crap and will concede v NEW! Most on here seems to favour Peltier to Palace attacking defenders though so...

Most of them having WB vs Peltier dilemma and leaning towards Peltier but PvA is a different beast so thinking of going with him

        1. jia you

would much rather play WB to Peltier so playing PVA is a no-brainer for me!

Not sure why you'd get premium defenders and not play them?

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years

This is kind of why I didn't get PVA personally. For all intents and purposes he's a premium given his goal threat and attacking potential generally, but at the same time he plays for a team bad enough that you'd worry about them conceding 3 or 4.

This is not a dig at Crystal Palace btw, just saying you wouldn't expect clean sheets the way you would from the Manchester teams or Liverpool.

Exactly. I felt the price for PvA was unfair considering the price of the other defenders, but based on GW1 he does seem worth it.

In other words, for me he sits in that awkward bracket between set-and-forget and rotation with other defenders.

PVA is in that bracket slightly above set and forget 😉
