Confirmation came on Friday morning that Kevin De Bruyne will miss around three months of the Premier League season with a knee ligament lesion suffered in training earlier this week.

While bad news for De Bruyne himself and the legions of Fantasy Premier League managers who owned him – the Belgian was the second-most owned midfielder before the start of the season and has suffered over 500,000 sales in the past week as a result – the unfortunate lay-off will likely mean increased pitch-time for Ilkay Gundogan, with David Silva and Bernardo Silva among City’s other players who are comfortable in the centre of the park.

Pep Guardiola revealed in his press conference that David Silva has returned to training in recent days, having missed the win over Arsenal with a leg injury.

Further potentially significant news for Manchester City assets actually came in David Wagner’s press conference on Friday. The Huddersfield Town boss confirmed that Zanka will miss out on the trip to the Etihad with a muscle problem, while Jonathan Hogg is a doubt with a hip issue.

Meanwhile, Maurizio Sarri ruled Cesc Fabregas out of tomorrow night’s match against Arsenal while confirming that Mateo Kovacic would not be ready to play the full 90 minutes – but could feature off the bench.

That will likely give Ross Barkley another week in the Blues’ midfield alongside the reborn, all-action N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.

Eden Hazard, meanwhile, may push for a start after his cameo – and assist – in the 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town last weekend.

The left-back spot continues to cause trouble for Unai Emery, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles ruled out for six to eight weeks. Sead Kolasinac also remains out, but Nacho Monreal has at least returned to training and could reclaim the left-back spot. Emery talked up Stephan Lichtsteiner‘s chances in that role though, so the uncertainty continues.

There was little to report from Jurgen Klopp’s press conference on Friday, but Joel Matip could re-enter the centre-back equation on Monday night for the trip to Selhurst Park. Dejan Lovren remains out, however.

Mauricio Pochettino didn’t elaborate on which of his remaining returning World Cup players (namely Kieran Trippier) would be involved this weekend, though Son Heung-min is of course now unavailable due to his participation in the Asian Games.

Spurs’ opponents Fulham face another headache at centre-back, with Alfie Mawson (knee), Denis Odoi (suspended) and Tim Ream (knock) absent. Joe Bryan has, at least, been passed fit to play at left-back, meaning Ryan Sessegnon will likely be spared defensive duties.

Nemanja Matic and Antonio Valencia are back in training but won’t be ready to feature for the Red Devils on Sunday, though Jesse Lingard appears to be available for selection – despite the possible misinterpretation of Jose Mourinho’s press conference comments by the club’s social media department.

United’s opponents, Brighton and Hove Albion, will be missing Bruno through a hamstring injury. Martin Montoya is in line to make his debut in place of the veteran right-back, who joins Florin Andone and Jose Izquierdo on the treatment table.

Victor Camarasa, Harry Arter and Kenneth Zohore are in contention for Cardiff City for the Gameweek 2 curtain-raiser against Newcastle United, who will be without DeAndre Yedlin (knee) for the match in south Wales.

Burnley’s extra-time efforts on Thursday night shouldn’t have much impact on their starting XI, with only Joe Hart, Stephen Ward and Jeff Hendrick completing the full 120 minutes of the players who started at St. Mary’s last weekend.

Eddie Howe and Manuel Pellegrini were coy on the chances of their clubs’ new signings (namely Jefferson Lerma, Carlos Sanchez and Lucas Perez) appearing in the match between Bournemouth and West Ham this weekend, though there appear to be no lingering injury worries for Marko Arnautovic.

Richarlison, meanwhile, has shaken off his knock to be passed fit for Everton’s game against Southampton, though new signings Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes won’t feature.

The Saints could be without Mohamed Elyounoussi (tight hamstring), although Stuart Armstrong is expected to be involved.

Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Watford haven’t reported any new fitness concerns, though Wolverhampton Wanderers could be without Diego Cavaleiro for their Gameweek 2 match at the King Power Stadium.

    Bottomed:

So that Guardian post had no quotes to suggest that Aguero will be benched... however, it was retweeted by Jose Alvarez Haya ( https://twitter.com/10josealvarez ) who seems to be an ITK when it comes to City.

On April the 7th, he tweeted "Finally Agüero will be in the bench today. He is much better and hopefully he can play some minutes today." ( https://twitter.com/10JoseAlvarez/status/982637794295074816 ). Aguero was on the bench that day against Man Utd.

        3) Predicted Aguero's surgery and that he'd be fit for the WC

Hes a Man City twitter guy. Anything that looks like it could be a big story to do with City he will retweet. If it turns out not to be true, he didn't write it. If it turns out to be true, he can seek credit for retweeting it.

I agree with your thoughts Stat regards this chaps knowledge. I've removed the captaincy off Aguero onto Salah to be on the safe side.

However on the plus side a 20 minute cameo at the end against a tiring Huddersfield I'd hope he could get a goal.

Yep, I noticed that too. Quite worrying. Jose himself might come out with something but presumably that would be Sunday.
Going for Salah much safer but I love the option of Mendy in particular but also Bernardo silva who is playing so well.

Regarding that jamie jackson article regarding aguero being benched on the guardian, there’s no quotes or proof that supports his claims that aguero will be benched but have been following him on twitter for awhile and he’s normally quiet reliable with the Manchester clubs. You guys going to keep the armband on aguero or change to someone else?

    Aguero captaincy 'risk' - GW2

Obviously we know Aguero started all 14 Man City home league games last season for which he was available for. I've just looked at the previous season as well (Pep's first season in charge).

Aguero was on the bench 4 times at home that season, coming on twice before the hour mark in games that were currently goalless (both times for Iheanacho), and twice for Sterling in the last 15 mins in the other two (both times in tight games when his goalscoring was required - when 1-1 with Swansea and 2-1 up vs Leicester).

So I am confident that either Aguero starts, Aguero comes on in a situation when goals are required (which I can't see happening this weekend as I expect City to be several goals ahead sooner rather than later), or Aguero is an un-used sub (in which case my vice Salah gets the armband).

Conclusion = Aguero captain this week.

Yes I saw his tweet. So Pep 'considered' dropping Aguero. I'm sure he's considered everyones position. There was no actual evidence there that Aguero was at big risk.

    3. Cok3y5murf

Umm...hello? Sometimes when teams are winning comfortably, they sub on a player for the last 5 minutes. For example, Sturridge in Liverpool's last game.

If he's benched, there's always a cameo risk.

      1. The_Adam
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 6 days ago

Sturridge is someone who needs minutes. I'd hazard a guess that some of the other City subs will need minutes more than Aguero does. A 5 minute Aguero home game cameo doesn't happen, based on the last two seasons of Man City home games.

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 6 days ago

"A 5 minute Aguero home game cameo doesn't happen, based on the last two seasons of Man City home games."

A cameo is completely circumstantial. This is happenstance. There is no logic behind a player never coming on as a cameo in home games. A stat is just happenstance if you can't explain a logic behind it.

          1. The_Adam
            • 12 Years
            8 years, 6 days ago

I have to base my team choices on how I think the game will pan out, and my reasoning for Aguero as my captain is that I think he will start (based on the fact that he almost always does in home league fixtures), and that I can't imagine Pep bringing him on for a few minutes in a game where I expect City to be at least 3 goals up, probably more.

If it's a tight game and Aguero hasn't started, yes he will probably come on, and yes it probably will be a short amount of time. But I don't think it will be tight, so I'm backing that scenario not to occur.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 16 Years
              8 years, 6 days ago

Why not captain Salah, and take the points & price rises if Kun scores, and be immune from his benching if he doesn't start? Seems like a bit of a win win to me.

              1. The_Adam
                • 12 Years
                8 years, 6 days ago

Because I don't think Salah will score big this week. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I think Palace away at the moment is as difficult as it gets playing a team outside of the top six. I'd rather captain Arnautovic or Bernardo Silva I think.

I'll have to stick with Kun now anyway. If I change my mind and he scores a hat-trick I'll be devasated! 😛

Yes I remember that. He was my captain that day. 7 points I believe? He may do that again. But if Aguero starts, and my gut says he will, he could double that.

Yes, neither do I ideally. Willing to risk it though because of the potential points return if Kun starts.

If he has a 1-pointer, fair enough. I got 98 points last week so can afford to take the risk this week I think! Especially as I don't foresee Salah having one of his crazy games where he gets double-figures. Palace away is about as tough as it gets at the moment outside of a top 6 fixture.

      Guardiola "considers" dropping Aguero.

Man City manager "could opt" for Jesus instead.

That doesn't really affect the doubts I had about the rotation risk when I put my team together 3 weeks ago. Nothing definitive there at all! I'm confident he'll play. It certainly bucks the trend if he doesn't.

Keep for this week, and MAYBE next week. Athough if Danny Ings looks good & King Blanks, there'll be decisions to be taken for GW3

just pulling your leg scotty the question is why bother cherries got a decent run of fixtures and everything else in the pricebracket looks a sideway move not even worth considering, just keep your free transfer and reassess next week imo 😉

The Jamie Jackson article has no quotes and is full of ifs, buts and maybes. His opinion is no better than any one of us unless he's spoken to Pep or one of his coaching team directly.

His job is to generate traffic for the Guardian, sell papers, not to be a spokesperson for truth. Being a journalist, he's not going to let that get in the way of a good story. Aguero being rested is just idle speculation. Something to write about when you've got nothing else.

Being a Utd fan I know well enough how full of the proverbial Jamie Jackson really is. I can't believe you're all so gullible.

    Aguero (C) locked in

Have you any quotes that Aguero will start?

He happens to be a reputable journalist and the Guardian happens to be a decent paper.

I do not really know what you mean by that Badger but some of the best Journalists i have ever seen do not have a degree but more draw from their life experience.

In short a degree mean little,if you got it you got it.

He's started the vast majority of games he's been fit for.

Generally speaking, when someone makes an assertion, without evidence, it's not for someone making a counter-assertion to disprove. Logic 101.

As for Jamie Jackson being a reputable journalist and the Guardian a decent paper, by what standard are we going on? By some standards, misnomers all round. As a Utd fan I can tell you that Jamie Jackson is full of it

Unless his job is typing up Pep's team sheets I'm taking the article with a pinch of salt! In a nutshell it's "Man City rotation risk", which anyone with a City player in their team already knows.
