An Alexis Sanchez-less Manchester United fell to a disappointing defeat at Brighton on Sunday, though there were further attacking returns for their two Gameweek 1 goalscorers.

Pascal Gross, Glenn Murray and co, meanwhile, served a reminder of their own Fantasy credentials with a three-goal first-half blitz.

Our penultimate Scout Notes of Gameweek 2 focuses on yesterday’s match at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton and Hove Albion 3-2 Manchester United

  • Goals: Glenn Murray (£6.5m), Shane Duffy (£4.5m), Pascal Gross (£6.9m) | Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m), Paul Pogba (£8.1m)
  • Assists:  Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m), Solly March (£5.0m) | Luke Shaw (£5.1m), Marouane Fellaini (£5.0m)

While the swirling rumours surrounding Sergio Aguero’s start (or lack thereof) proved to be unfounded yesterday, the whispers about Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) not being with the travelling Manchester United party for their trip to Brighton turned out to be true.

Sanchez was missing from United’s squad of 18, though Jose Mourinho confirmed both before and after the 3-2 defeat to the Seagulls that the Chilean’s injury is not thought to be serious:

Alexis was going to play but he had a little problem, so we had to decide to give an opportunity to another attacking player.

I don’t know really. Let’s wait for the results of the studies, but I don’t think it’s a big thing. I think it will be one or two weeks maximum.

Without Sanchez, United produced a fairly insipid performance, with no Premier League team losing possession more often or racking up as many “bad touches” as the Red Devils in Gameweek 2.

The most worrying aspect of United’s display was their defensive fragility, particularly for the 29% of managers who own David de Gea (£6.0m), the most-selected goalkeeper in FPL this season, or other members of the back four.

It took United nine league matches to concede four goals last season but they had achieved that feat by the end of the first half yesterday. This was also the first Premier League match since October 2016 in which they had conceded more than two goals.

With Tottenham Hotspur up next, FPL managers could be forgiven for reassessing the worth of their United defensive assets despite the solidity of last season, when Mourinho’s side racked up a league-high 19 clean sheets. De Gea, indeed, is already the most-sold goalkeeper of this round ahead of Gameweek 3.

De Gea wasn’t to blame for any of Brighton’s goals, but the 4.0% and 1.4% of FPL bosses who own Eric Bailly (£5.5m) and Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) respectively will be concerned about the possible repercussions of their performances yesterday – particularly with Chris Smalling (£5.9m) and Phil Jones (£5.4m) waiting in the wings.

There were, at least, more attacking returns for the two most-bought United players of Gameweek 2: Luke Shaw (£5.1m) and Paul Pogba (£8.1m).

Shaw’s assist was a little fortuitous, his volleyed shot bouncing down into the turf and onto Romelu Lukaku‘s (£11.0m) head for the Belgian’s first league goal of the season.

Pogba netted a stoppage-time penalty after Marouane Fellaini (£5.0m) had been felled; this was the second successive season in which Pogba had scored in both Gameweeks 1 and 2.

That Pogba was entrusted with spot-kick duties again with Lukaku on the field is perhaps significant, although the Frenchman’s words after the win over Leicester City are still relevant, particularly with Sanchez absent yesterday.

As mediocre as United were, Brighton put in an excellent performance that suggested yet again that their home fixtures are the ones to target from a Fantasy point of view.

The Seagulls had the worst away record in the top flight in 2017/18 and their display in the 2-0 defeat at Watford last Saturday – Chris Hughton’s side not having a single shot on target – was representative of their struggles on the road.

At the Amex Stadium, however, the Seagulls are a different prospect. No-one epitomises their contrasting home/away form more than Pascal Gross (£6.9m), who served a timely reminder of his worth as a mid-price midfielder just days after his starting price had dropped.

Thirteen of the 15 goals that Gross was directly involved in last season came in home fixtures (two assists were his only contributions on the road) and the German midfielder has begun 2018/19 in much the same vein, delivering a ten-point haul yesterday a week after his blank at Vicarage Road.

Gross racked up 24 bonus points last season and was awarded three again yesterday evening, after having won and converted a spot-kick just before half-time. No Brighton player had as many penalty box touches than Gross, who now seems a permanent fixture on penalties after having wrestled responsibilities from Glenn Murray (£6.5m) last season.

Murray, who turns 35 next month, proved there was plenty life left in him as a mid-priced FPL forward with a beautifully taken opening goal, while there were assists too for wide-men Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m) and Solly March (£5.0m). Knockaert and March’s places are at risk in the medium term from new signing Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£7.0m) and the injured Jose Izquierdo (£6.0m), but the pair’s performances yesterday will give Hughton a welcome headache.

There were mixed fortunes for Brighton’s centre-backs, with Shane Duffy (£4.5m) – who had more attempts on goal without scoring (28) than any defender in 2017/18 – finally finding the back of the net, though his long-term defensive partner Lewis Dunk (£4.5m) limped off after 20 minutes.

Speaking of Dunk’s injury, Hughton said:

We won’t know until tomorrow morning, he’s gone over on his ankle but Lewis is a tough individual and he’s not use to missing games.

Recent signing Leon Balogun (£4.5m) stands to benefit from Dunk’s possible absence, having replaced Dunk yesterday afternoon.

Brighton XI (4-4-1-1): Ryan; Montoya, Duffy, Dunk (Balogun 20′), Bong; Knockaert, Stephens, Propper, March; Gross (Kayal 90′); Murray (Locadia 90′)

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Young, Lindelof, Bailly, Shaw; Fred, Pereira (Lingard 45′), Pogba; Mata (Rashford 45′), Lukaku, Martial (Fellaini 60′)

Had 2 FT banked this week, and have already done Jota -> Mkhi ahead of GW3 to avoid the price drop last night.

Tempted to do the same with my second FT today to avoid King price drop..

King's underlying stats and general play just worry me and even if he does score against Everton, he's going to drop and I don't intend to keep him any longer..

Thinking Ings - he had 4 or 5 chances, and should have scored 2 against a good Everton side away from home. Any other suggestions? Anyone else in the same boat with King?

Done King > Kamara and 4.5 > Alonso last night. Will rotate WB and Kamara until I upgrade my 5th mid as both have very good fixtures for now.

The only counter argument I have is that it's only been 2 gameweeks, and if I sell King now, I'm not carrying my 2 FT over so am far less flexible with making any big transfers for GW4 which would make it harder to bring someone like Kane/whoever explodes in GW3..

        Tough one.

Ive done king > ings, i watched the game and king looked woeful against west ham, Wilson was the main threat, along with fraiser and brooks

Agreed 100%, he wasn't at all on it that day, but Wilson is the ultimate troll and wouldn't surprise me to see him blank against Everton and King on the scoresheet to kick start his season..

I did really like the look of Brooks though, watched the game too and he was very lively. Prefer him to Fraser if it wasn't for Fraser's set pieces.

I already own Arnie. Im on Aguero, Arnie and Ings. I debated Zaha but the extra 1M from Ings, allowed me to upgrade Luiz > Alonso, so im happy as things stand.

I have King and am a little concerned also. I know as soon as I drop him though, he's going to perform. Im also thinking one poor game and Wilson will be rotated. With their fixtures they require some rep. I think i'll look to Fraser for this.

Emery's substitutions tell quite a bit. Mkhi wasn't the best player in either game but got the full 90 both times. It's his place to lose basically. Emery wasn't afraid to take Özil off so there really isn't anyone who is guaranteed to play no matter how badly they perform like with Wenger.

Ironic how Mourinho has shifted his moaning to how he is no longer a manager but is a head coach since he doesn't seem to have done any coaching at all with his central defenders since he bought them a couple of years ago.

He should just send his assistant to do interviews from now on.

Klopp has talked about Palace targeting TAA as the weak link in the Liverpool side. He says that TAA after he struggled against Zaha previously. " If you leave any full-back alone, nobody’s able to defend Zaha, but we will not do that ". Might mean Fabinho starts tonight

Joe, in the rush to displace King this week, with Ings the apparent bandwagon, are fantasy managers somewhat over-egging Arnautovic's doomed run of fixtures?

Arsenal feel like an open goal right now, Everton and United don't look too tidy and even Spurs are conceding to the likes of Newcastle and Fulham.

It still needs to settle even though sarri is known to play same players every game. Hazard is the only option for me as of now until it shows who will play on the right (not so sure its gonna be pedro).

Mkhi is hardly a punt, nailed down spot in a front 4 being the best player in arsenal so far. Although if ramsey secures that false striker he had versus city he would probably be better.

the thing is, Alonso will not play defenses as accommodating as HUD and ARS every week... Chelsea generally look horrible at the back and I think vs top teams they will not be coming forward. They could and should have conceded 5 vs Arsenal were it not for wasteful Auba finishing and should have conceded twice vs HUD... the flipside is that it's impossible to see LIV and MCY conceding many at all but Mendy and Robbo will still get attacking returns for 0.5M less.

Anybody blaming journalists - or FF Scouts - is simply looking to absolve themselves from responsibility. Nobody makes definite claims, just stories and views based upon the evidence they see... and we should all do that. It's amazing that so many people are looking to blame one journalist when pretty much every other team prediction out there had Aguero playing.

Having done Cedric+King -> Alonso+Kamara using the 2 FTs, would you do Cairney->Kante for -4?
I could give Cairney more time but he's getting closer to a price fall while Kante to a rise, which will make this move impossible.
There is no room for Pedro in my team, owning Salah Mane Bernardo Richarlison.

What to do with King and B. Silva?

Is King still on penalties, and are there other reasons to keep him, or should we be looking to replace him?

      B. Silva got no attacking returns in a match that ended 6-1 for his team - unlucky or does the stats back it up?

What’s more important bringing in the best players or getting rid of your worst players? For example i could of got the likes of auba and alonso who in my opinion are better options then hazard but ended up going with hazard because I didn’t want to get rid of bailly or arnie but Sanchez was a must to get out for me

      1) What lessons have you learned after Guardian-Gate?

      2) Can a gameweek 2 Wildcard ever be justified with so little data available?

      3) Can Mkhi provide enough Arsenal coverage for their good fixtures or should we stump up the cash for Auba?

      4) Is Alonso as essential as he was during the last 2 seasons?

      1. With the pep roulette in full spin but Man city looking like high rollers do we have to accept the gamble and go all in with 3 players (Kun, Mendy +1)? And who is your +1?
      2. Arsenals fixtures are now amazing but who are we gunner get?
      3. So many big defenders doing bits and getting attacking returns. Should we be all getting these attacking defenders and accepting that the clean sheet now just a happy bonus?
      4. Is the demise of Man United going to have a lasting effect on "casual" players?

Which option looks strongest going forward:
      A. 4.5 + 4.0 (cheapie set and forget, depending on save pts mainly and invest the money elsewhere)
      B. Rotating 4.5s
      C. 5.5 + 4.0 (get Ederson/Allison set and forget even if it means doubling up on City/Liv defence)
      D. 5.0 + 4.0

We only have it if there's an angle.

EG - last week we focused on RCA using his bench boost to discuss the merits of that and countered it with Mark having the exact same bench score but not bench boosting.

Wouldn't say either's tales were predictable and also allowed us to discuss early chip use - which was a key question being asked.

I haven't see anything that partic interests me this week re rough with the smooth so may not have it all.

We should certainly continue with Rough With The Smooth as a Hot Topic, but only include the odd item in Scoutcast if you spot something interesting there.

How do you know there won't be anything interesting in Rough with the Smooth this week when we haven't had the Hot Topic yet and there's still one match to go?

I will be very disappointed if I manage to get a second successive century (I need 16 more points tonight from Salah, Mane and Robertson - hope this doesn't jinx it!) and don't get the chance to at least mention it in a hot topic. With an elite defence including Alonso as well as Mendy and Robertson from the start before it became template.

People like the chance to boast or moan about their game-weeks, and it is good to collect these together in a hot topic. Those who aren't interested don't have to read it. The Scoutcast has often spent too much time on Rough with the Smooth in the past, but there are sometimes one or two stories that are worth a quick mention or that might lead to an interesting discussion.

At this early stage of the season, how do you weigh up looking for differentials against jumping on so-called bandwagons? Is it a matter of balance in terms of building team value while also trying not to forget to scout players you think could do well going forward rather than past games?

I went with tripling up on liverpool and city Players this year totally different to how I set my teams up in previous years which would have been spreading it around different teams. I've had the best start to a season I've ever had. (I'm aware it's only 2 GWKS)

Can this last for the season or should i be afraid not owning Utd-Spurs-ARS-Che players?

Will my Salahs and Agueros outscore them all eventually. Or should I be more flexible and swap them in depending on form or fixtures. THe two teams are capable of scoring 100 goals this season where SPurs Utd never win by more than 1 or 2 goals....

Are Aguero, Aubameyang, Kane, Lukaku, Firmino etc. about to change this whole "forwards are dead" theory? There are some good upcoming fixtures for some of the premium forwards and I'm worried we are about to be reminded why they are the prices they are.

They aren't dead, they're just expensive. Those you mention could all be candidates for first or second forward, but a mid-price option is likely to be required for your third one if you plan to play 3-4-3 or 4-3-3. Shoe-horning in three premium ones will destroy your team.

There was a severe lack of good value mid-price forwards last season, but there should be a few good ones this season, such as Zaha and Arnautovic.

In light of the conversation on the dangers of not owning Aguero that Jonty and Mark had in the video released prior to the gameweek, what does the scoutcast think of Mark's decision to deliberately limit himself to Salah as a captain choice? A reasonable strategy he was unlucky with this week or a tactical error that got punished?

In other words, is it best to always try to have multiple popular possible captain options to mitigate the risk of one you don't pick punishing you, even if you have little intention of captaining him yourself? Or it it entirely reasonable to spread funds away from those potential alternative captain options if you're certain you just want to captain one player?

Can Joe and Andy talk through why they switched their captaincy to Salah from Aguero? Did the Guardian give them the jitters? Shout out to Az for sticking to his guns and reaping the rewards (assuming Salah gets less than 20 points). Does this episode demonstrate the perils of a booming fpl industry encouraging journalists to write opinion pieces plucked from their imagination to get clicks, which in turn influence fpl managers? Should we apply some rigour to which sources of information we believe? That Guardian article cited no source or quotes, yet it might have influenced a lot of the FFS community. Could all be academic if Salah hauls tonight, but food for thought nonetheless.

For me it was because I was away early from Sat am camping away from internet access so didn't have access to more info or time to think about it Sat am.

All I had was a dubious story which created doubt. With no chance Sat am to look into it and chat with other FPL managers I went for the safest option.

My fear was Sat am other journalists saying the same - everyone taking the armband off Aguero, leaving just me with it as had no chance to change.

Would I have kept on Aguero Sat am if I was around? Maybe, maybe not. But there is a chance I may have as respected Aguer captaining managers on twitter - eg Az and FPL Freddo may well have convinced me.

Annoying timing - but on the plus side had a great time away and didn't spend a second's thought on my FPL team.

It annoys me when people make sweeping conclusions based upon limited or inappropriate data sets so I'm full of self-loathing for asking this but... for those of us with DDG, is it time to write off MNU defensive assets? There was always too much uncertainty with regards to who lines up in the defense (Shaw will be back in the Mourinho dungeon soon enough) but they are conceding and looking very shaky... it's only two games in though... but I doubt Brighton will score 3 too many times this season.

      Evening Jonty...
      i) Firstly, the plan was Aguero is just a placeholder for Aubameyang for GW3 when Arsenal fixtures swings in a sea of green. What is your plan for Aguero now?
ii) Is Alonso the real deal? Attacking returns in two games in a row...

For the Rough... had Steve Cook as my first sub all week, but swapped him with Wan Bissaka who was my second sub to compensate for everyone with PVA etc. No show from Peltier means I get Wan Bissaka's red card off my bench instead of Cook's 14 point haul!

I know it’s come up a few times but surely the bonus pts system is a real mess when Mendy gets nothing for Sunday and Van Dijk gets nothing v Palace. VVD’s CBI must have been high. Won everything and his key headers led to two goals. Robertson is great but didn’t create much tonight. And Mane getting two points is odd. It’s as if the BPS has its favourites - the science sems off at times. And yes, I have VVD as a differential to Robertson. So that hurt!

Would it be crazy to bench DDG vs Spurs (H) and start Hamer vs Cardiff (H)?

      Reasons to do so:
      - DDG has conceded ten out of the last 14 shots he has faced on target
      - Cardiff haven't scored a goal yet, in fixtures that most teams will score in (bou, NEW)
      - Spurs are near the top of the table when it comes to attacking threat over the first 2 GWs
      - United's defence looked extremely poor vs Brighton
      - United are without Matic and Valencia

      Reasons not do so:
      - Huddersfield haven't looked very good in defence either, but they've had two of the hardest fixtures (CHE, mci)
      - The point of having DDG is that you expect him to score more points than any other GK over the course of the season, so you should start him every week because you don't know when he will get a ton of points
      - Mourinho is known for setting up defensively against big teams
      - Old Trafford was a fortress last season, with Utd only conceding 9 goals there in the league
      - Man Utd have kept a clean sheet against Spurs in their last 4 encounters at Old Trafford in the PL

Where do the scouts stand on this?

Also - according to PaddyPower, Huddersfield have a 41.7% chance of keeping a CS against Cardiff (H). Meanwhile, Man Utd have a 32.3% chance of keeping a CS against Spurs (H)

To keep moths out, btw, use cedarwood hangers.

What to do with WanB? Do you think he could go to 3.9m?

I think that would be very unlikely. Im keeping on my WC. He only got one game suspension.

Is it time to ditch Lacazette given his lack of playing time, or should I keep him now Arsenal's fixtures are set to improve?

Sterling didn't play. He was my captain. AWB came from my bench for a solid -2. Literally pepped. 🙁
      Shall I remove Sterling now?

How great is the risk that tripling-up on Man City and Liverpool players now will lead to rotation in a few Gameweeks once they’re playing midweek Champions League matches?

Is B Silva really worth a place just because he plays for City? Is he a player that's ever going to hurt your score/rank? Better to either find the money for D Silva or just go with 2 City?
It's a bit dull dull having 6 players from 2 teams every GW - lot of games with no interest in.

Firmino owner here: stick or twist ahead of the Brighton game? Could use the funds for a midfield upgrade, but hate ditching a player like him, who can post a haul.
