Fantasy Premier League managers are encouraged to factor the Gameweek 3 set piece match-ups in their transfer plans in the next few days.

In the second of a new series of Members articles we assess once again where set play situations can be exploited.

Where this differs from the Set Pieces tab is that we have added extra detail on how many of each set piece has been taken so far, which players have had the most attempts from set-plays in terms of goal efforts, as well as how like teams are to receive or give away free kicks or penalties.

That way, by comparing each team’s overall set piece data to find any mismatches, individuals expected to benefit from these situations will become clearer.

We ran similar articles during the World Cup and found them to helpful to Fantasy managers, hence why we have decided to bring them to FPL.

Obviously we only have two rounds of data so far so it may difficult to find too many over-arching trends right now, but we’ll be building on this template every week for Members to use when making their transfers or deciding on team selection.

Any differences between the takers here and on the set-pieces tab are purely because that individual is not available in Gameweek 3.

    How have Southampton looked defensively?

Looking for a 5.0 and under keeper to save money on De Gea and I'm considering McCarthy. Don't want Hennsey as it'll mean doubling up on Palace.

Hennesey and Wan Bissaka seems like a lot of Palace defence. I'd have three of them when you factor in Zaha.

Ahead of some trickier fixtures for Liverpool from GW5, I thought it might be worth a bit of analysis of where Salah got his returns last year, to help with long-term planning & maybe saving two transfers for the International Break (disclaimer: I currently own him). For the record, after BHA (where Salah is a clear captaincy favourite around here), the next 5 games are lei, tot, SOU, che, MCI before things get a bit easier.

Last year, Salah made 36 appearances (he missed Burnley (A) and Everton (A) in the second half of the season), scoring 32 goals and being awarded 12 assists. He blanked (no goal or assist) in 9 of those games (4H & 5A: CPL, mci, new, MUN, WBA, swa, mun, STO, che). For the purposes of putting some numbers on expected points I've compared his average performance for Liverpool when they were playing the other 4 teams in last year's Top 5 (Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd & Spurs), and then looked at how he did when playing against the rest of the premier league. I've ignored points from minutes, BAPs & clean sheets, instead awarding him 5pts per goals and 3pts per assist. The results are remarkably consistent and do suggest that he is a bona fide captaincy candidate every week EXCEPT when playing away to one of the other 'Top 5'...

    Avg pts vs Rest of League (Home): 6.4 (G and/or A 80%: 12/15)
    Avg pts vs Rest of League (Away): 5.54 (G and/or A 85%: 11/13)
    Avg pts vs Top5 (Home): 5.75 (G and/or A 75%: 3/4)
    Avg pts vs Top5 (Home): 1.25 (G and/or A 25%: 1/4)

Obviously you need to add points for minutes, clean sheets and BAPs to the above (he scored 303pts last season, meaning he averaged another 2.97pts per appearance from these other sources - feel free to add this on to the above in your head). Whilst the average points at home against 'the rest' is noticeably higher, that's solely the result of 4 goals & an assist at home to Watford (though of course this is what you're really hoping for when captaining him!). What really stands out though is that in the 4 away games against the top teams, Salah got only one attacking return, a solitary goal away at Spurs.

Presuming most here have 3 City players (who are obvious captaincy contenders in GW5-7 with FUL, cdf, BHA), it might be worth planning to rotate in further Chelsea and Arsenal premium options given their fixtures over that trickier fixture period (Chelsea: CDF, whu, LIV // Arsenal: new, EVE, WAT) before deciding whether to go back to 3 Liverpool players ahead of a possible goalfest at home to City in GW8.

TL;DR - Judging from last season, Salah is unlikely to get much from GW5 & 7 and it might be worth a bit of forward planning to give the game's most expensive player a quick 'rest' after GW4 for a few weeks (remembering of course that as other work on this site has demonstrated, in order to do REALLY well in this game you not only have to have the best players week-in, week-out, but also have to have them for the periods when they're at their very best).

Food for thought anyway & interested in any comments from here.

Great analysis. The difference to last year is Salah is worth 13M and has high ownership so no risk of his price increasing too much if he's transferred out in that period. Feels a bit dangerous getting him out and then struggling to getting him back in though.

I'll wait and see how he does in GW3 and GW4

I agree with the perils of planning too far ahead (and was burnt by KanEXIT last year) but am considering at least trying to get a bit of outperformance from flipping to say Hazard and upgrading a striker to Auba in the interim.

Surely mentioned that transfers must be considered here. 2 FTs to use Salah and another 2 FTs at lest to get him back. Over 4 GWs is tight even if you don't have any issues. I'm not a use only FTs kinda manager but it just all seems too tight. I'll have other Cap options and for now that seems enough. Salah stays.

Liverpool assets are season keepers for me. Title-winning teams perform regardless of the fixture. Not gonna pay a premium to transfer them out for a few games.

Agree. What the analysis fails to factor in is Klopp's tactical tweaks for this season. He's got Bobby playing deeper which opens up more space for Salah and Mane. That's gonna discombobulate top defences too, so I'm not too worried.

Agreed - it’s by no means set in stone that he’ll underperform BUT at least we know what happened last year and everyone can make their own informed choices. I’ll probably gamble and take him out IF I don’t have any other pressing transfer concerns

Yes IRL, but FPL is a wee bit different, no?

I'll be shipping him (and Stephens) for Hazard & Mhiki, and he can come back on my WC in the GW8 int break.

At the start of the season, I felt like I'd own him for 38 GWs. However, I was curious as to how my team could look without him and at some point this season, I want to give it a go. I played around last night with hypothetical transfers and loved the strength of my team without Salah. I feel like the only match I'd captain him in between GW4 and GW8 would have been SOU and I'm happy to captain Mane that week. I may end up taking the plunge.

I am looking to do a 2 week switch to (Salah to Hazard) for gw4 and 5. Bringing back salah in gw 6. Of cos things could change by gw6, as of now it is the way for me.

It might not change the statistics much, but the Mane red card at City should be factored in. That significantly affected that game as Liverpool had looked threatening up to then. Of course no guarantee that Salah would have had returns if it had stayed 11 v 11.

No returns at all v United is problematic, but maybe Mourinho will already be gone before the first meeting 🙂

Really interesting, something to consider, especially for those that are looking to capitalise on some early fixtures.

I was part of the 3 failed Kanexits, including the fated 2nd one with back to back hattties so I know how this could bite, but the 4 week funding could prove lucrative.

Only concern is the transfers around that period are solely focussed on Salah. The rest of the team would have to be in good shape to handle the hockey cokey.

Does it really have to be 4 transfers though?

Having 2-2.5 mill in the bank for a week or two doesnt seem to dtrimental to me atleast.

Lets say you move mane and salah to Sterling and Haz after gw 4. You'll still have the possibility of getting salah back in one move if you keep 2 or 2.5 itb. If you want him back come 6 there no problems with tucking away that money, if its gw9 you should prob invest it in the shorte term and use a doublemove to bring him back later.

also, lets not forget that gw9 might be a brilliant time to execute the wc, with LFC an a couple of other teams getting some really plum fixtureruns.

      Thank you for this 🙂

I believe that it goes down, at least for me, if you consider tot and che as tough fixtures from attaccking perspective. Seeing tot and che play (only two matches for both, I know) I am confident that Liverpool will score. And from what I saw Salah is still the main threat.

Anyway i understand the temptation to shift for the likes of Hazard, but I am not that brave I guess 🙂

Salah still averaged 4.2ppg in his away matches against the rest of the big six last season.
So I wouldn't captain him in game-weeks 5 & 7, but I probably wouldn't get rid of him from my team either.
The other question is what to do about other Liverpool assets such as Mane and Robertson.
Do we keep them in our squad and possibly bench them, or do we sell them and then get them back later with either hits or a wildcard?

I'm not too concerned about his record against the top sides because Liverpool have strengthened across the board and they will dominate games more often and more completely.

Even getting a top keeper helps - the fewer goals Liverpool concede the more often their opponents will be going into the latter stages of a game behind and needing a goal (and leaving themselves open to counterattacks).

I got Salah so I can captain him almost every week and this isn't going to change unless his stats drop alarmingly. Sure, Aguero scored a 20-pointer in the last game but I actually think he will frustrate cappers this year, and I don't want to own an 11m+ player who I can't/won't put the armband on.

So let's see, but with three attacking returns from two I can't see Salah not getting my captaincy pretty much every week. I might need to ditch Alisson to allow Mané though as, between them, they are incendiary.

at least worthy of consideration i reckon. the good thing about him costing so much is that he can easily be taken in and out of your team without worrying about team value, unlike last year.
