Captains

Vote in the Captain Poll for Gameweek 3

The Captain Poll is now open for votes ahead of Gameweek 3 and you can watch our video on the best candidates for the armband below or on our YouTube channel.

The early favourite is, not surprisingly, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) who faces a very appealing home match against a Brighton side, who are notoriously poor on the road.

The Seagulls shipped nine goals in two league matches against Liverpool in 2017/18, four of them at Anfield in Gameweek 38. The Egyptian netted in that match and provided the assist for Dominic Solanke’s (£5.0m) 53rd minute goal too.

His case is, of course, strengthened by being Liverpool’s biggest goal threat against Crystal Palace on Monday night, even if he only managed two assists in the end.

Sadio Mané (£9.8m), owned by 31 percent, should prove a strong alternative candidate bearing in mind he is a must-have option for the 45 percent of Fantasy managers who do not own Salah, and remains ahead of him for both goal tally and FPL total score.

Either way, Liverpool assets are expected to dominate the captaincy debate this week considering that West Ham were the only top flight side to survive relegation in 2017/18 with more shots conceded on the road than Brighton.

Sergio Aguero‘s (£11.1m) hat-trick against Huddersfield on Sunday will naturally give him some backing for the captaincy this week, as Manchester City prepare to travel to the Molineux.

Wolves may have allowed fewer shots on their goal than any other side so far, but the fact that have still conceded four goals in two matches suggests there are areas to exploit for the reigning champions.

Aguero might be at slightly more risk of rotation this weekend but we will, as per usual, wait and see what emerges in the press conferences later this week.

After four assists in just two matches, the highly-owned Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) is an option for a second week running. In fact, he finished third in the poll behind just Aguero and Salah for Gameweek 2.

After West Ham’s performance at Anfield in Gameweek 1 and a defeat at home to Bournemouth in Gameweek 3, Arsenal assets might also be worth looking at. The favourites there are expected to be Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m).

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur’s meeting at Old Trafford reduces the appeal of a few usual suspects, namely Paul Pogba (£8.1m), Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) for the Red Devils and Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) from the north London outfit.

With Brighton's away record being so poor and Aguero having just scored 20 points, how are people approaching the decision to captain either Salah, Mane or Aguero in Gameweek 3?

    Salah - BHA (H) - £13.0m - 54.5%
    Mane - BHA (H) - £9.7m - 32%
    Aguero - WOL (A) - 11.1m - 40.5%

    Key Statistics:

    - Mane might have outperformed Salah so far but the Egyptian has had nearly twice the amount of attempts and exactly double as many big chances, arguably offering more goal threat than the Senegalese forward.

    - However, the pair have both registered the same amount of shots on target and attempts in the box.

    - Whilst both players have very similar assist potential, Mane's involvement has been considerably higher (more touches, more touches in the final 3rd and more passes received).

    - Aguero has now scored 9 Premier League hat-tricks. Only Alan Shearer has scored more.

    - Despite Aguero having two more attempts and two more attempts in the box, his overall goal threat is very similar to Salah's over the first two Gameweeks.

    - Wolves have conceded the least amount of shots in the league so far this season (City travel away to play them this week).

    - Liverpool beat Brighton 4-0 at Anfield and, more impressively, 1-5 in the reverse fixture.

    - Salah registered one goal and two assists across both fixtures despite not playing the full 90 minutes in either game (subbed off in the 80th and 84th minute respectively).

    - Mane missed the away match and only played 74 minutes against Brighton at Anfield. Klopp played Solanke up front with Firmino in behind for this fixture, perhaps limiting Mane's involvement on the left.

    - However, Salah managed to score and assist from his role on the right wing. Mane didn't do either and was up against Scheletto who started at right back for Brighton...

    - Aguero scored 15 goals at home and 6 away from home last season. Interestingly, he registered 5 at home and 15 on his travels the season before.

    - City scored the same amount away as Liverpool scored at home last season (45 goals).

    - Andrew Robertson registered a goal, assist, clean sheet and three bonus points when Liverpool hosted Brighton at home at the end of last season.

    Conclusion:

Considering Liverpool's goal threat, head to head record and Brighton's away form, Salah and Mane are probably the two best captaincy options for this week.
It is important to note that Brighton will be buoyed by their brilliant performance against Man Utd on Sunday, using groups of up to three/four players to close down and intimidate Utd. Whilst this was both courageous and effective, Utd played poorly and Liverpool will be far better at escaping the press before hitting Brighton on the break if Hughton decides to use this tactic again.
Putting statistics aside, Aguero has probably proven himself as the most consistently explosive player in FPL history. Taking this into account alongside his performance last week, exemplified by Guardiola in the post-match, it is perhaps best to acknowledge that we do not have a large enough sample to take stats such as Wolves's shots conceded tally seriously. Whilst they might be the best newly promoted side, they could easily be dismantlement in the same way Huddersfield were last week.

Rotation is always a threat to any manager who owns a City asset but it pays to be brave as Aguero captainers found out at the weekend. Mane might have some statistical edges over Salah but the fact remains that last year's Player of the Year has had more shots and better chances to score those shots with so far this season. Across another two Gameweeks, the returns for each of Klopp's men could have just as easily been switched and I sincerely doubt Firmino will keep off the score sheet for much longer.

Given the popularity of Liverpool and City players this season, ownership and overall rank are already playing a part in people's decisions. It is perhaps likely that dullards will captain Salah, mavericks opt for Mane and casuals choose Augero given his massive haul. I was lucky enough to captain Mane in GW1 and Aguero in GW2 but have actually found myself tempted by Robertson this week. One must always remember that whilst he recorded 18 points in this same fixture last season, he did so directly opposite Ezequiel Schelotto for 90 minutes.

I'm also captaining Salah but everyone plays the game differently. Players who've had a bad start and who are aware that Salah will be the most popular captain will be more likely to consider Mane and Aguero in order to have an edge and improve their rank.

You should question why you think he's worth 11m in your team if you can't captain him at home against HUD.

It's not about the result. It's about the thinking. If you don't trust your 11m forward against HUD enough to give him the armband, maybe you don't value him enough. The thinking persists beyond this week. In two weeks, will you captain Aguero?

You know why most of us didn't captain him. I explained it below. It's not because I didn't think he was the best option. But regardless, in a week with 2 popular captains, it's better to own both than just the one you captain.

I've never understood the if you don't captain him you shouldn't own him thing. If the player hauls you'd much rather be a non-captaining owner than a non-owner.

I keep hearing that statement repeated but it's an over simplification of a complex topic.

As far as I understand the most effective way to optimise an FPL team is to pick all the best value options and then distribute your remaining funds by upgrading where possible to maximise your total return even if that means that some individual selections no longer represent value.

If your squad size was not limited it would just be about value, but your squad size is limited so the argument that a player over £x is only value if you captain them x amount of the time is true in a sense but not a sound strategy.

In my opinion you need to isolate a captain decision down to a very narrow question. Who has the greatest probability of achieving the highest score. Whether it's correct to have that player in your team as part of your high level strategy is a different question to be answered at a different time.

Brighton wont even attempt to press Pool they will sit deep in fear. Man Utd was a different game because they attack so slowly with too many side ways passing so even when Brighton got caught out with the press they had plenty of time to get back in defence. Against Pool you don't get that chance as they attack so fast therefore teams are less likely to press.

This time last season Pool had Coutinho to create opportunities against the defensive teams, hence why they bid for Fekir but that fell through so not sure what there plan B is this season. Shaqiri is another fast attacking player who they bought instead of Fakir and Keita/Fabinho are good counter attacking players. Pool could struggle more this season against well organized defensive teams. Once again they look better suited to the Champions League.

Personally I think those two trades are a little bland and almost sideways.

I’m looking at King > Ings and Bernardo Silva > Mkhi to cover Arsenal attack/good fixtures whilst also making funds for PVA > Alonso next week. Wan-B is enough Palace cover in defense

Not the most inspirational of transfers, but I see what you are getting at. Your team is good, you don't want to change too much.

Maybe just shift Patricio for another 4,5gk and bank the transfer? Maybe Joe Hart or the guy from Cardiff (despite fixtures, I can see him get a lot of saves)

Brought in Bilva last week after the De Bruyne injury. Peps lineup on the weekend as already made me regret it.
    My team is
    Foster (Fabianksi)
    Mendy, Luiz, TAA, (Boly, Bissaka)
    Salah, Mane, Richarlsons, Bilva, Hughes.
    Aguero, Morata, (Madine)
Is it crazy to take Bilva out for Mkhi after one week?.
My reasoning is Madine and Bissaka won't play, Leaving Boly Vs ManC. My only sub. Slightly worried Bilva, TAA and Morata might not start. So don't want to be left with 9/10 starting players. My other option is Boly for a 4.5 but not sure who to.

  28. Hot Topics and the important questions
    Ginkapo FPL

Geoff posted a hot topic about heavy hitters at the back and got not one response with any insight: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/08/20/fpl-question-time-spending-big-in-defence-end-of-forwards-and-arsenal-fixtures/?hc_page=12&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_18678211

Why respond if you just want to say, "hey, I have some defenders too"? Is the desire to be heard that great? Guys seriously, add something to the conversation. I've watched these pages go buy over the past couple of days and so little of merit is discussed, A or B, Alonso or Mendy, Geoff or Stelling? What do these add, do you not want to understand why certain defenders are doing well rather than jsut which are doing well?

Questions that need answering right now:

Why are left backs doing so well?
Where have all the clean sheets gone?
    Why have strikers stopped scoring?
Why have wingers started scoring more?
    Can Etherington keep saving penalties?
Does Steve Cook play Left Back?
What effect does choosing Kamara or Stephens have on your team long term?

I bring these up, because understanding the answers to these questions will offer far more to your transfer decisions rather than just knowing if Richalison or Walcott is preferred by the masses. I also raise Geoff's hot topic as there was a lot to say to that hot topic yet no one did.

Geoff was asking, "Should we include all three of Mendy, Robertson and Alsonso in our team?" although he didnt say it in those words.

Its a good question, on paper there are obvious advantages to these three as they are doing well so far, although Klopp thinks Robertson had a bad game yesterday. Now you could dig into the stats to see whether circumstances fell in their favour in the opening two games or not, however, I will leave that to others more adept than me. I will note that Robertson was muted by Palace as they seemed to intentionally leave Trent unmarked on the right to keep pressure everywhere else, including the left flank.

Instead I will look at one of the other oddities going on right now. In general the premium defenders value is lessoned by cheaper compatriots getting clean sheets and offering value alternatives. So where are these clean sheets? GW1 there were 8 clean sheets, and GW2 there were 4 clean sheets, with only Liverpool getting two clean sheets.

Now with no team getting two clean sheets (Liverpool excepted), putting value into clean sheets would seem odd, yet under normal circumstances we do. So lets delve deeper into those team who did get a clean sheet.

    Bournemouth at home to Cardiff,
    Palace away to Fulham,
    Chelsea away to Huddersfield,
    Watford home to Brighton,
    City away at Arsenal,
    And Burnley and Southampton drawing.

These clean sheets all seem to owe more to the team attacking than any outstanding defending, does this mean we should pay more attention to fixtures? Well with the exception of City they all faced much stiffer tests in GW2 so its not that suprising they conceded. Though City and my Mendy captaincy have a lot of questions to answer, if they want to win they league they will need to do better, Pep sacked by Christmas at this rate.

The clean sheets in GW2 seemed to follow a similar story, teams facing much easier attacks than they did in GW1.

Going forward Burnley and Crystal Palace have fixtures that could bring a plethora of clean sheets, and at cut prices offer much better value above base than the premium defenders. We already know about the attacking form of PVA and AWB. I find it wierd that no one seems to be looking hard at Burnley for value. Is this a mistake? I'd suggest so. Alonso, Mendy and Robertson got an average of 9pts between them. A 4.5M option getting a CS is earning 6pts at base value, is the 1.5-2M extra spend equal to only 3pts? Aguero costs 5.6M above base, and outscored Danny Ings by 13pts this week, which works out at 2.3pts per million, far better than the premium defenders offered.

I think thats food for thought. So lets start thinking about why rather than just shouting into the wind. If you want the community to have decent conversation then you need to start looking at yourselves, please start offering more than just that you think Keita has fancy footwork.

Excellent post. Really not enough data in yet though to get some correlation however you have to start somewhere.

Very good point re TAA/Robbo - TAA produced 2/13 decent crosses so it seems like Palace did their homework on that setup and were content to shore up on their right side. Also shows what a great job AWB was doing till the sending off.

Re Burnley I think its clear that Europe is going to hurt them. Shipping 3 at home to Watford is just not them, New keeper to adjust to as well. I'd steer clear for now. Palace D double up may well be an option now if no other fires, though Schlupp may lose his place.

Further to the TAA/Robbo comparison, somebody posted something during last week's game - don't remember who, but it was absolutely on the money and consistent with what you're saying.
The vast majority of TAAs crosses are coming in high and bouncing across goal. They're difficult to control or get anything on. The majority of Robertson's are whipped in low at the perfect height for a tap in. There's no doubt which will create more threatening situations.
I don't have any stats for you, but I watched both games with that in mind and saw it time and time again. As you say I think Palace had identified that too and were ok to let him do it, whereas they shut down the right side quickly. Following that I did the switch after gw1 and am very happy with it.

not sure if you want answers, but I've got some anyway 😉
Why are left backs doing so well? most teams have a better defender at right back, left footed players are rarer and usually play on the wing as youngsters, making them more attacking ... or something like that 😀
Where have all the clean sheets gone? they will come
Why have strikers stopped scoring? they haven't, also Arsenal had two tough games - surely Auba/Laca come good
Why have wingers started scoring more? more teams are set-up in that way now - Chelsea, Liverpool, City last year, maybe Everton this year all play with a false-9/hold up player with inside forwards
Can Etherington keep saving penalties? might not get many more to save
Does Steve Cook play Left Back? no
What effect does choosing Kamara or Stephens have on your team long term? means your bench is shite (no biggie pre-WC)

      1. Ginkapo FPL
        • 12 Years

        😀 I appreciate answers.

I was more curious as to whether Cardiff can keep conceding penalties.... he's getting a high number of opportunitites, reverse Milli.

If clean sheets will come then the premium defenders seem less worthy...

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 8 months ago

the reverse Mili - I like it, maybe the Cardiff defenders are so turd that it will keep happening...I guess that's possible!

Shaw, Pereira, TAA could keep pace and with players like PVA, Wan-B, Burnley defence possibly, I'm sure there are others - I'm not completely sold on the heavy backline yet, especially if Auba/Lacazette score a couple this weekend

      2. Pumpkinhead - I'm ITK …
        • 14 Years

Seems that when Mendy or Alonso get forward, walker and Azpi seem to play as inverted centre backs a bit, coming central whilst they surge down the wing . This is probably why there are more returns for these 2 . Mayne just coincidence that these are both left backs ?

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 8 months ago

Yep, it's clearly a part of those teams' tactics - Mendy and Alonso are better at attacking than Walker and Azpi (same with Robertson and TAA/Clyne), playing like that almost turns it into a 343 when attacking, which is ideal - it just often seems that the better attacking threat is left footed, not completely sure why but that's my theory

Simply adding "and why" to that hot topic should in theory get better responses.

Always good to pose an open question.

So in this case, questions such as....

Which of Alonso, Mendy and Robertson should Fantasy managers include in their back line and why?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a premium backline?

..... could gain a bit more insight.

But hot topics are often just there to start the conversation, it is up to posters to interpret it in as much detail as they want.

But a good old fashioned "why?" can work wonders.

I really use to appreciate the time and effort that posters like Ruth NZ and Triggerlips (through his blog) used to put into their posts. These guys posted stuff I thought was incredibly insightful and a nice change from the endless RMTs which are horrible to constantly read. It’s why many people were initially drawn to this site like myself. These posts should be incentivised by the FFS team (I don’t know how tho) as they are critical to the site’s success.

I always enjoyed Ruth NZs too because he rarely thought in the same way as everyone else. It's good for FFS to have outliers, who go against the flow - particularly if they sink their time into providing a data supported view that no one else is offering.

Ruth did post a lot of dross imo ( remember the Pep.post). Newer players wouldn't see through it as much as the wiser heads so easy to get drawn in but each to their own

One person i think is misses is Ludo . His posts were fantastic and a proper read and this is coming from a non stats guy..shame he is not playing this season

Spot on Ginkapo. If there's going to be a useful debate we have to start with the underlying reasons for outcomes. This season has already thrown up some really interesting questions - some of which you've posed above. I'd love to see the community sink their teeth into them in depth. Your post is well timed and constructive imo. Also happy to see Geoff keen to facilitate this to a greater degree with future HTs.

And like I said to Ginkapo above, if you want to take one of the questions and add a sentence or two we can have specific HTs on those questions. Flag your own comment and we can hulk it.

ex. Why have strikers stopped scoring? Name a few names, ask if people think it's permanent, why do you think what you do.

Otherwise I'll try to do some of them tomorrow 🙂

Cheers Geoff - that's great. Sadly, I don't have enough time today for the kind of debate I'd like to spark, but I'll try and return to at least one of the questions that are engaging me - perhaps later in the week (work permitting). If there's something that I think might be of interest in I'll flag it up as you suggest.

I had personally replied to somebody else a page or two before this got topic explaining my defence and the reasons I preferred to invest more in the defence this season. The pages fly by so fast it’s disheartening to get ignored and then to be discussed further. The set up of these pages changing over so fast some times is still a major offput for good discussion IMHO.

        Yeah it is tough.

Users who are looking out for this stuff and finding it should flag it for Hot Topics though. Those flags go directly to mods and they can get the important stuff more visible. If even a few good users try to write out a Hot Topic every few day with an important question, and then flag it, it would really help guide site discussion

I'll try to get mods to do this more as well

I couldn't agree more with this. I rarely bother posting anything because I know the chance of having a decent discussion is slim and that stems partially from the terrible structure of these comment pages. In order for me to start a conversation about something I simply make a post which then appears at the bottom on an article which is nothing to do with the topic I want to discuss. Yes there are 'hot topics' but these are limited. On any other forum you would create a thread and then all relevant discussion could easily be located. On FFS if I want to discuss something my post simply appears among a mishmash (don't think I've ever written that before) of other posts and others that want to discuss my topic don't event know and will not know that my posts exists unless they stumble across it by chance. A proper forum would increase the value of the site greatly and I'm a little bemused that the current system still exists.

Wasn’t sure if anyone was still reading this, only one or two comments in the last few hours, so I posted my thoughts as a new comment (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/18694116 if you’re interested) which just illustrates the problem you’re highlighting. There’s no longevity of discussion and I’d say 95% of comments are terrible because of it.

If you and others start to hang around on hot topics and keep returning then others will too. Sure this hot topic is a few hours old, but its not going to be deleted for years, so why not keep revisiting?

Fair point, and as soon as I saw some activity I came back. As I mentioned in my linked comment above, I find that I have ended up as the last comment on hot topics on a few occasions.

              See https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/18635847 as an example.

That can be very frustrating - particularly when the mods (not all of them) have posted them, added a few token replies to the first few responders and then disappeared.

It's the nature of the site. Pages move so quickly that it is impossible to have an in depth conversation. If it was set up like a forum with topics for discussion in different threads it would be different currently but by the time anyone posts a well reasoned argument the post they replied to is already pages back and nobody will read the reply.

Is that fair? Blame the format of the site on the actions of the posters? Hot topics are created by the site to hold a bookmark on good discussions, this breaks up the pages rushing by, so this excuse doesnt hold water.

      Good post, refreshing to read.

Don’t think we can look at Aguero’s 20 pointer and make PPM comparisons based on that though, considering the sample size is 1 and well above his average.

If a 6m defender can score 1pt per GW more than the best 4.5m defender, you'll earn 38pts for the. 1.5m spent on the upgrade. That's 26pts per million which is excellent marginal spending and where you can eke out those margins that separate stronger FPL managers from weaker ones. If such options exist, they are a "fire and forget" approach.

That 1pt per GW is only 2 goals, 5 assists and 11bps which, when looking at Alonso or Mendy looks easily achievable.

None of this bars you from holding Salah and Aguero. In fact the decisions to buy them are essentially the same but with the added complexity of armband choices.

The cost of the extra spend in defence falls more on your support strikers and midfielders. So now the comparison is between 9m mids and 7m mids. Or 9m strikers v 7m strikers. It is my view that a strong team can be constructed with solid support provided from that lower price bracket. And while they are firing and the more expensive ones aren't, shoring up with an aggressive defence can make a lot of sense, particularly with a very useful 4.1m defender available.

Fashion will change in a moment and funds will get reallocated back to the offensive options. As things stand, money in defence is where the markets are pointing and rightly so.

Aguero being 5.6 above base is based on 5.5 holding several "nailed" options? If not, he's certainly 6.6 above base.

I don't think that last part about prem v budget defenders + prem attackers v budget attackers is flawed logic, but also did'nt like your examples using an outlier like Aguero's 20point haul this weekend is neither representative of his ppmatch-average during a hot spell, and certainly not over a season. But if we follow your example one could argue that:
The extra 5 mill in defence added 3*3=9pts across the backline. Which, at the very least, gives a red hot 20p Aguero over Ings a real battle.

My view is that larger investment in defence comes with a greater security of points than rotating cheapies and additional funds to spend in mid/attack. At least that was the justification i used to convince myself to go that route last season. And studying pointsaverages on players season totals at least confirmed my logic after aswell. But thats not to say that a "heavy defence" is now a must, im sure there will be plenty of veterans sticking to their tried and tested methods of jumping on and off the premium mids/attackers at the right time, whilst rotating cheap defenders. Most likely, they'll finish high in the ranks, as theyve done, using these tactics in seasons past.

      One thing more on defenders:
If Clean sheets follow the trend of seasons past, the top 6 sides will get 4-5 more Cleans on average than the rest. If some of the attacking defenders from the top sides keep up momentum from seasons past, they'll average more attacking returns than everyone bar a few exceptions. And largely but not least, the one thing thats almost never included in discussions like these. When prem defenders dont return, they dont pick up nearly as many "minuspoints" from letting in goals, as cheap defenders do. In some instance this could be as much as 20-30 pts over a season.

😀 Good point, I wouldnt take my points too seriously as I mainly post to give everyone a kick. If a post is too correct it doesnt spark debate, evaluation of its flaws tends to other greater insight. 😀

I see no reason that left sided players should better their right footed counterparts. I can however think of historically a lot more attacking left backs than right backs.

I don't see the clean sheet total being statistically out of range. It does almost seem that evenly matched sides can offer as many clean sheets as the 6-1 thrashings.

Strikers role is evolving. Wingers now form a front 3 in a lot of teams

Awful start to the season, tempted to rage-wildcard, please convince me to hold...0.6itb, 0ft unless I pull the WC trigger.

    Pickford - (Fabianski)
    VVD - Mendy - Sakho - (Dunk - WB)
    Mané - Ozil - B. Silva - Neves - (Stephens)
    Auba (C) - Aguero - Arnautovic

Only thing stopping from shipping Ozil is the next five arsenal fixtures, but he's next in line if he doesn't perform in GW3.

Going against the grain here and suggesting you hold it. I think you stay patient with Özil and get a jump on him as a differential. I’m most concerned about your defenders, with WB suspended and Dunk coming off injured. You’re not far from a respectable team. If you must make another move, take a hit. WC is too powerful, and your spine is solid.
