Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with a much more clear-cut captaincy discussion this week, but there’s still plenty to analyse before the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the stand-out candidate with Liverpool hosting Brighton and Hove Albion, while Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is his main competitor.

However, there are, as ever some interesting differential candidates worth looking at.

We’ve gone over the results of our most recent poll and the underlying data to help you pick the best one once again.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

It is Salah who runs away with our Captain Poll for the second time this season. As of Saturday morining around 16,000 Fantasy managers had cast their vote to give the Egyptian a 48 percent share.

However, even though a home fixture against Brighton is considered just as appealing as the Gameweek 1 hosting of West Ham, Salah should fall well short of the majority he enjoyed for the first weekend of the season.

49.74 percentage points separated him and Gameweek 1 runner-up Aguero two weeks ago. This time around the gap is much smaller, the Manchester City man’s 22 percent backing trimming Salah’s lead to just 26 percent.

There are two main factors in why that change has occurred. The first is Aguero himself, who has emerged as a much stronger candidate than was initially expected following his Gameweek 2 hat-trick against Huddersfield. No player in the league has had as many shots on goal as Aguero and this week he travels to face a Wolves defence that has already been breached four times. The only thing that tempers Aguero’s appeal will be rotation once again. While he has now started the last 15 home matches that he was fit and available for, on the road in 2017/18 Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) featured from the beginning more times than him, 12 starts to eight.

The second factor has been the form of Sadio Mané (£9.8m), who has outscored Salah in both Gameweeks so far and has matched him for shots in the box (six) and accurate ones too (four). So it’s no surprise to see the Senegalese international in the running for a third-place finish in the poll this week, with eight percent of the votes.

Expected to run Mané close for third place is Arsenal’s main man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). He is also around the eight percent mark ahead of an appealing fixture, this week at home to West Ham, even after blanking in the first two outings of 2018/19. Those backing Aubameyang may well be members of the Salah-less 45 percent who are worried about Aguero’s place in the Man City side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) completes the poll’s current top five after continuing his fine start to the season against Huddersfield. The Manchester City defender has four assists in his first two matches and has touched the ball in opposing final thirds more often than anyone else in his classification.

The players you got rid off have great potential albeit they’ve done nothing so far

No but the players he is removing are the players you take out reluctantly because you know they have the potential to score well

He's taking out players who have not performed and not looked likely to perform, every player has potential if they have two legs and run around on a football pitch.

You'd never make a transfer if you live in this much fear.

Reputations don't seem to matter with Emery, he has thrown in a young 19 year old who's been the best mid.

Ozil has been hauled off now, wouldn't be surprised to see him benched.

Assuming no sudden fires happen after this GW, what do you think:

    1) BSilva to Miki - Arsenal cover would be nice and they play Cardiff GW4
    2) Patricio to Hennessey - obviously due to CP fixtures
    3) Save FT - for potential Pool players switch, however, I'm not convinced on gettin rid of Mane or Salah now...

    Hamer
    Alonso / Mendy / Robo
    Salah(c) / Mane / Richa / BSilva
    Kun / Zaha / Wilson

    Rui / Billing / Peltier / WB

I've only been playing FPL 4 seasons so a question for the veterans - can you remember such a strong template forming so early before?

Everyone seems to be bringing in the same players and every RMT looks the same. I know this happens on here quite frequently but not after only 2 GWs.

I think there are several reasons for this:

1/ We are picking from a smaller pool of players because sensible managers avoided the players involved in the latter stages of the World Cup. These players have mostly not been involved and so have not had a chance to perform well and attract owners.

2/ The new price change algorithm has seen relatively few risers but huge swathes of fallers which has caused many to either take hits or activate their wildcards in order to preserve their budget. Patience is not an option.

3/ A very unusual fixture list with exceptionally good or bad runs for many teams. In my time playing FPL I can't remember anything like it. This again narrows the player pool to choose from.

4/ The strong performance of the initial template. A lot of people have got off to absolute flyers and many managers who haven't are in panic mode.

So what can we expect going forward?

I anticipate the current template will come under pressure as the players returning late from the World Cup pick up form. Then there is a big fixture shift starting in GW9 when many of the golden carriages will suddenly turn back into pumpkins. Managers who have used their wildcards early will find themselves at a bigger than usual disadvantage but those who started badly but were patient will also have been punished by the loss of much of their budget. This is all extra bad news for those who have got off to a poor start.

There is some good news though. With so many fallers the player pool to choose from will widen. In addition it looks like FPL Towers have been pretty generous with their pricing this season so a lower budget may not be that big a disadvantage and if a few cheap enablers such as AWB and Ings turn out to be excellent picks then this further mitigates against those with low SVs. My suspicion is that later in the season the template will be far less obvious and give more opportunities than normal for those who have started badly to catch up.

I agree but I think there is also a lot more data available to people now which helps formulate a template much earlier on.

Mainly due to the fixture list. Most of the big sides have favourable fixtures so it’s straightforward to select from the high performing players in those teams as opposed to shopping round for hidden gems in the mid or lose league sides

Well I am WC and Auba has won out over Mane.
But holding Mane was very tempting - it just gives more balance to the team without him
Alonso Mendy Salah Mane Kun Auba ain't possible without poor 11th player and bench but workable if prepared to risk. But 5 of 6 and a decent team is. That's the template for me.

No, it's never been like this. It's unfortunate for me, this is the best start I've ever had. I get a good start and everyone goes for my team. Obviously nobody is copying, the template team just makes so much sense. Kane is a bit off and doesn't do well in august, aguero was nailed on before the season started because he'd done so well last year. Salah is a must. The fullbacks of mendy and robertson are essential and was from the word go. At least I don't have to watch bad fpl teams rise to the top straight away, teams with players like chester. I'd catch them in the end but why not start well instead

Once you start to try and fit Haz, Kane, Alli, Erik and dare I say it Lukak if Utd start firing, the template will soon change.

As you say, we avoided WC players and City fixtures were just too good to ignore.

Pool have a run of tricky fixtures coming up so we might see some drop Salah for Haz and just keep Mane (mistake imo)

But I hope the template does change quickly because the game is boring already by gw2

Thats the think you dont have to fit them all. you work around the best picks and stick to your guns.. some of the best managers have teams i think so so so bad and yet they do so well each season.. it is not who you own, how you manage the weak links.

In fact week 2 template team is not preseason template team. Mendy, Richarlison and Mane have 0,5 million new owner at least. Kun and Alonso 300 000+. All of them are there because of their top returns. this is why template team looks so strong after week2. After week 10 it will be close rank 100 000 team.

A lot is covered above - the early fixtures favoured Liverpool and City, who are most people's pick for the top 2 positions in the PL this season, some important players were not ready after the WC and so on.

But it's a mistake to consider it a 'template' in my view. All that is reflected is performance over 2 weeks. Richarlison has seen his ownership go from around 16% to around 36%, Mendy from 12% to 28%, Mané from 18% to 34%. That's primarily because they scored big in GW1 and then did well again in GW2. If Pereyra does well this weekend his price will rocket; same goes for Mkhi, Walcott and others who did well in GW2.

Most teams are still active at this stage and casual managers tend to transfer in players based on recent performance rather than projected future performance (they are sometimes the same thing but often not). So we don't really have a template, just a reflection of what has happened in the first 2 weeks. The only difference this season is that a lot of the FFS favourites have delivered so people round here are mostly happy. But that's by no means the case every season. 😉

I guess a lot depends on your definition of template. For me it is the players that are being brought in to most manager's teams but there is a valid argument that we should only count the players that are chosen by the 'good' manager's in the template. For example we don't see that many RMTs on here with Kante or Neves or Pogba.

It's a convenient term more than a useful one. Like many words everyone thinks they 'know' what it means but defining it is far more difficult.

Well, there are 2 questions, aren't there?

              1. What should I do?
              2. What is everyone else doing?

As far as I am concerned, the word 'template' relates to question 2 only and I want to keep it as far away from question 1 as I possibly can. The only exception is towards the end of the season when you might take top 10k ownership (or ownership in your ML) into account if defending or attacking a position. But otherwise, the idea of a 'template' will only get in the way of you becoming a better manager by learning to make better decisions of your own.

              That's my take anyway.

Some try too hard to copy the template (which often reflects the past rather than the future), and others try too hard to avoid it by going for differentials just for the sake of it (rather than because they might be better choices).

                Both are mistakes, I think.

Agreed. Best is to make your own decisions. If they happen to coincide with the majority, then good. If they don't, that's also good. 🙂

I always picture VR as managing his team in splendid isolation deep in the woods somewhere in Finland. Obviously I have no idea what he reads or doesn't but I kind of think that not reading too many opinions of others is helpful sometimes. Especially about players - learning from others about the mechanics of the game is another story. But unfortunately, FFS tends to mainly concern itself with "which player" rather than "how to become a better manager". I guess that's what the majority of people want.

whenever it is talked about things like this, it seems recommended to avoid this site
or maybe not avoid it but to take the advice on this site to make up your own decisions.

Hello Ruth. Just saw your comments about VR. There was actually article about FPL in finnish newspaper couple of weeks ago and they had managed to reach Rönkä to give some comments for them. When looking at those couple of thoughts he shared (there was only few quotes from him) he seems to be somewhat "ordinary" FPL player which is great. 🙂

"I watch matches and analyze statistics. I contemplate why something happened and try to form overall picture of what might happen. I follow the events of the Premier League almost every day, he explains"

Just thought you might be interested if you haven't already seen that.

Good point, focusing on points is the best way to be successful at this game. Don't worry about what's templates or what's the casual pick. All just noise that gets in the way.

I have Kane, Pogba and Neves but also have:
          KAN > Wilson
          Mane > Pereyra > Pereyra
          Mendy > Alonso > Shaw > Holebas > Wan
          Ederson > Hamer

So do I have a template team?

My experience is that there’s always a “template” team - invariably one that would have scored a tonne of points the previous week, and ignores the role of luck and general FPL chaos that happens each weekend.

However it has undoubtedly been an unusual start.

it’s been very, very high scoring. 100 points a week is not the norm. Most seasons you could be happy with 50-70 depending on the average for the week.

The best teams have also had the best fixtures, and the highest scorers. And it’s not been difficult to pick out the more dependable assets.

So taking risks and -4s has been easier to justify and more likely to pay off if 100 point weeks keep happening.

Looking further ahead- that “template” could be torn up by Monday, or this evening.

My prediction is that there will be a lot of high scorers this year. The top 6 all look good barring United, and all have players who could coin it in.

For example, Auba, Hazard, Kane could all do incredibly well - but how would you fit them in if no-one in the current template fades away? We could be forced to prioritise between a number of high performing players rather than try to mould teams to an early “dependable template”.

All of that notwithstanding the luck and chaos that comes with injuries, cup competitions, rotation etc.

I think there was a strong template going into Gameweek 1 tbh. The experienced players in my mini-leagues all had 7-10 of my starting 11. I think this was a result of the world cup and a reduced number of guaranteed starters. It just so happened that the template did extremely well and so all players are now sculpting their teams to look like ours based on recent performance.

Once the likes of Kane, Lukaku, Auba and Hazard start firing we'll start to see some differences.

I think with their fixtures and form towards th end of the season there was always going to be a strong template of 6 Liverpool and city players, and then with the world cup to take into account you had a much much smaller pool of players to choose from in the remaining slots.

Also, this pre season has probably been the best indicator of performance in my 4 years playing, which makes the template stick.

The ridiculous fixture runs points to why the early wildcards could backfire. The fixture swings will be huge.

This is true but partially mitigated by the likelihood of Man City and Liverpool assets being good picks irrespective of fixtures. Once you add in AWB and your non playing bench player that means even if you use your wildcard early a few judicious hits should get you a competitive squad. It will be harder for teams that don't have this solid spine though.

Definitely agree that there are some factors which make the start to this season unusual, but the general clamouring for 'template' players and many teams looking similar is common across all seasons.

I remember listening to Mark on the Scoutcast last season after 2 or 3 weels saying Lukaku was not only essential but a sesson keeper. That didnt last long did it?

All will change in 6 or 7 weeks and there will still be 30 odd weeks to go before the end of the season.

For now it's all about the 2 or 3 differentials in each team and whether they can perform.

2nd and 3rd strikers are the spots where there seem to be most varied options and no real template....

I think #3 and #4 are the boggest contributors here. Look at the templates and they include players for teams that have had a great initial run of fixtures and they have done well so far. Aguero, Mendy/ Salah, Mane and Robertson/ Richarlison/ AWB/ Alonso and Pedro. All of these players had good fixtures and have performed well. When the fixtures swing we will see what managers will adapt quickly and which will lose ground. Thats when i plan to swerve away from the current template (which i pretty much had from GW1)

Do you think its a reflection of:

      1. People generally taking FPL more seriously now.
      2. Loads more info available online.
      3. Real life teams are performing more to form. This makes FPL more predictable.

All of which makes a great argument for making some pals and doing a draft (in addition to fpl). Your wk 1 / template / premium picks are distributed evenly amongst the managers and you’re then left to gamble over the differentials and trying to gauge when they will explode / come hot. Nothing better than signing someone from the free pool who blanks the first week when benched then grabs a haul the following week when you’re ready to throw him in eg. When/whether to grab Will Hughes over Maddison

      It's 1 and 3 entirely.

Let's be honest, any fantasy football player worth their salt would have highlighted City and Liverpool big hitters for big points regardless of any 'template'. This is not only because they are the most attacking sides, but also because similar priced big hitters have either had a long world cup, have new managers, have unrest at the club or have a tough run of games (or hadn't scored in august before!). This completely removes the likes of Hazard, Kane, Lukaku, Aubameyang, Morata, Alli and Sterling from the equation - all of whom have been top, top point scorers in the last year or more.

Once people double or triple up on the City and Liverpool big hitters then they aren't left with a lot of budget for anything but decent mid-priced players to fill the remaining positions. With fixtures falling as they have and certain teams impressing in pre-season, then it was always likely that this remaining budget was spent on the same, similar batch of mid-priced assets.

Everything is sunny and glorious in a lot of teams right now but once the aforementioned list of big hitters return and start firing, then we'll see a period of utter chaos - where templates are smashed and heroes and villains are born.

This really is the calm before the storm.

It wasn't too hard to make the decision to go 3x Liverpool and 3x City, of those six players, it was always going to be Aguero, Mendy, Salah, Robertson and then one of Mane/Firminho and one of Bilva/Ederson.

It wasn't too hard to pick AWB given price and Richarlison due to fixtures.

That's 8 players which pretty much 95% of the top managers are going to share, and that's before you start to talk about fairly obvious choices like King/Tomkins/Fraser/Zaha etc.

The big change will be around GW8 when the fixtures turn and suddenly Hazard and Kane are must haves.

Expensive forwards not doing their thing for time being.
Everybody has Zaha/Arni/King/( wondering about Mitrovic/Ings/Wilson), and expect them (probably) to match expensive forwards points...which frees funds for template of attacking LBs, and expensive mids.
Nobody is talking that Richa will match Salah, but a lot of guys are still like - Zaha will match Kane.
For time being that is the cause for early template.
When Auba/Lukaku/Kane deliver...two braces in a row...somebody will hot topic - "is it time for expensive three forwards?"

Every year is the same, although admittedly there seems much more point chasing and getting last weeks goal scorers and less independent thinking than ever before .
People think research is coming in here and see who everyone else is getting in.

This week, in all probability we will get some big scorers not currently in vogue , a Auba , Kane , Morata, Hazard or some random mid priced and they will all be in the ‘template’ next week
Pick who you want based on stats , fixtures, value & good old judgement and we won’t go far wrong

    Hi All,

Currently on a WC. Given the potential of Arsenal's great run of fixtures, is it wise to plan to get an Arsenal premium forward in over the coming GWs?

    I'm currently on:

    Hamer/McCarthy
    Mendy Alonso TAA AWB Bennett
    Salah Mane Rich Mkhi Hughes
    Kun Zaha Wilson

0.9ITB. Looking to do Wilson & Zaha -> Laca and Kamara with 2 FT in GW4 (depending if Laca starts and does well). Not sure how i can stretch Laca to Auba from this lot if I want an Arsenal forward.

    Any thoughts? Thanks

Arsenal have had two very tough games and have a superb run on paper now so I'm chancing siding with Auba on WC.
Chelsea also have great fix so I'm doubling up on their big guns! One of the reasons that I wildcarded was to get in ahead of the crowd as everyone will want CHE + ARS in a couple of GWs more than likely (well, that's what I'm hoping anyway haha)!

    My team:

    Ryan Fabianski
    Robertson Mendy Walker Davies Tomkins
    Salah Sanchez Cairney Hughes Jorginho
    Aubameyang Arnautovic Jimenez

I was thinking of making 3 transfers and get -4p.
