Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with a much more clear-cut captaincy discussion this week, but there’s still plenty to analyse before the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the stand-out candidate with Liverpool hosting Brighton and Hove Albion, while Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is his main competitor.

However, there are, as ever some interesting differential candidates worth looking at.

We’ve gone over the results of our most recent poll and the underlying data to help you pick the best one once again.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

It is Salah who runs away with our Captain Poll for the second time this season. As of Saturday morining around 16,000 Fantasy managers had cast their vote to give the Egyptian a 48 percent share.

However, even though a home fixture against Brighton is considered just as appealing as the Gameweek 1 hosting of West Ham, Salah should fall well short of the majority he enjoyed for the first weekend of the season.

49.74 percentage points separated him and Gameweek 1 runner-up Aguero two weeks ago. This time around the gap is much smaller, the Manchester City man’s 22 percent backing trimming Salah’s lead to just 26 percent.

There are two main factors in why that change has occurred. The first is Aguero himself, who has emerged as a much stronger candidate than was initially expected following his Gameweek 2 hat-trick against Huddersfield. No player in the league has had as many shots on goal as Aguero and this week he travels to face a Wolves defence that has already been breached four times. The only thing that tempers Aguero’s appeal will be rotation once again. While he has now started the last 15 home matches that he was fit and available for, on the road in 2017/18 Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) featured from the beginning more times than him, 12 starts to eight.

The second factor has been the form of Sadio Mané (£9.8m), who has outscored Salah in both Gameweeks so far and has matched him for shots in the box (six) and accurate ones too (four). So it’s no surprise to see the Senegalese international in the running for a third-place finish in the poll this week, with eight percent of the votes.

Expected to run Mané close for third place is Arsenal’s main man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). He is also around the eight percent mark ahead of an appealing fixture, this week at home to West Ham, even after blanking in the first two outings of 2018/19. Those backing Aubameyang may well be members of the Salah-less 45 percent who are worried about Aguero’s place in the Man City side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) completes the poll’s current top five after continuing his fine start to the season against Huddersfield. The Manchester City defender has four assists in his first two matches and has touched the ball in opposing final thirds more often than anyone else in his classification.

Don't forget, the earlier in the season you are the more valuable rolling over transfers becomes. A transfer made next week instead of this is done with 50% more data available, fast forward to GW11 and that drops to an extra 10%.

This is obviously an oversimplification and has to be balanced with things like price rises etc., but if you are in a position to roll over a transfer it's probably worth doing so.

I'd say that is true for the whole season no? Always think its better get 2 FTs when possible.

Yeah definitely. But i think it's even more valuable early on when we currently only have 2 weeks of data/observations to be basing our decisions on

I see your point. Would you say the same about wild carding? Have some people done it too early? Is it better to wait a bit you think? Seems a lot are wild carding when their teams aren't that bad.

Yeah i think a lot of people are probably jumping the gun out of frustration at missing the likes of Robertson/Mendy/Mane. But then the rest of their team will be based on very little as I've no doubt that in 2 weeks they'd wildcard again and make a very different team. Personally I'd always try and wait at least 4 weeks before making wholesale changes, especially to account for fixture swings that may happen

Not completely true. I had robertson/mendy/mane and still wildcard.
My bench was a state and the team as a whole would have dropped to 99.4 if I left it sigurdsson sanchez lacazette etc.
I have looked at the fixtures way down the line and tried to pick the players who are good long term ones to have.
While also playing the price rise game where possible.

      An interesting perspective.

However, it's tempered by the fact that we have more pressing transfer needs early in the season BECAUSE of the fact that we had less data to back us up.

The Jotas, Kings and Baillys of the world need to be priority removed and doing so right away is far more beneficial than waiting and rolling transfers.

That's a good point and I'm certainly not saying to make 0 changes. There are players around that will require a transfer to remove/bring in. But if you're using a 2nd FT this week to replace Bilva with Mkhi or swapping a defender when you have a perfectly good replacement to come in off the bench then I'd say now more than ever you should probably save

I think they said on the scoutcast that firmino started to do well after gw 10 if that helps. But this game is a perfect firmino game - we've had two high scoring gws there is a low gw around the corner where teams with mahrez/firmino/sterling/ozil/eriksen (the second string heavy hitters do well) so perhaps give him one more gw

A bit lost here. I have 2 transfers, but not sure about what to do. I'd love to own a Chelsea player, but not sure about Hazard or Morata just yet. Next to that I'm looking to ship Firmino out, but only after this gameweek. Problem is, I don't want to let the FT go to waist while I can still be pro-active about changing the team.

    Foster - Fab
    Robertson - Mendy - Sakho - A. Smith - Peltier
    Salah - B.Silva - Rich - Maddison - Stephens
    Aguero - Firmino - Zaha

Anyone with good ideas? Or just keep the team and see what we can learn from this gw3?

    Current team
    Foster

dont think you should go with fabri + hamer as your goalies. Hamer might get dropped anytime and fulham's fixtures are quite mixed. Rest of your team is pretty much the template. Good luck!

Found a little more backup on my bench and will play 2 of AWB,Periera,Fraser and Ings every week. The other 9 are nailed.

    Ederson
    Alonso, Robertson,Mendy
    Salah,Mane,Richarlison,Mikitaryan,Fraser
    Aguero,Ings

    Hamer,Periera,AWB,Kamara.0.3m itb

Sacrificed Pedro to upgrade Bennett. I know I will leave some points on the bench at times but that’s the price you pay for some backup and choice of starters.

I hate rotating mids and forwards. If you pick well you never know when they'll score and you make mistakes.

I generally prefer having almost every penny in the starting XI and then picking some starters at 4.5m who are good for a few points if your starters miss out for some reason.

      1. The 12th Man
        • 12 Years

I hear ya. I’m usually the same but on a Wild Card a bench of Hamer,Kamara,Bennett,AWB frightens me a little.
If it costs me a few points now and again that’s the price I will pay for maybe getting a starter for a no show or having at least a choice of who to start.

Of. Our se I could have Kante and PVA and just play PVA every game with Kante as back up.

Hey guys, wwhich do you prefer on a WC?
    Auba,Pedro,TAA or Zaha,Mane,Robo?

Looking at fixtures, the Liverpool defender will probably me moved to Leicester in a couple of GW, worried about Pedro rotation, but i think Auba can outscore Zaha and Mane combined.

  28. Atimis
    • 9 Years
    7 years, 7 months ago

Assuming no sudden fires happen after this GW, what do you think?

    1) BSilva to Miki - Arsenal cover would be nice and they play Cardiff GW4
    2) Patricio to Hennessey - obviously due to CP fixtures
    3) Save FT - for potential Pool players switch, however, I'm not convinced on gettin rid of Mane or Salah now...

    Hamer
    Alonso / Mendy / Robo
    Salah(c) / Mane / Richa / BSilva
    Kun / Zaha / Wilson

    Rui / Billing / Peltier / WB

    Begovic (Stekelenburg)
Mendy - Robertson - Lowton (Schlupp - Wan Bissaka)
Mane - Mkhi - Richardlison - Bilva (McArthur)
    Kun - Auba - King

    1.9 ITB. 0 FT.

any suggestion to improve my team using 1.9m ITB would be much appreciated! Cheers!

Ones to watch/plan to move out would be Begovic (bou aren't good at cleansheets), Lowton (not worth 5.0 for me), and King (not a promising start).

Nothing needed this week as 0 FT but I'd have a look at potential options going forward.
