Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with a much more clear-cut captaincy discussion this week, but there’s still plenty to analyse before the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the stand-out candidate with Liverpool hosting Brighton and Hove Albion, while Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is his main competitor.

However, there are, as ever some interesting differential candidates worth looking at.

We’ve gone over the results of our most recent poll and the underlying data to help you pick the best one once again.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

It is Salah who runs away with our Captain Poll for the second time this season. As of Saturday morining around 16,000 Fantasy managers had cast their vote to give the Egyptian a 48 percent share.

However, even though a home fixture against Brighton is considered just as appealing as the Gameweek 1 hosting of West Ham, Salah should fall well short of the majority he enjoyed for the first weekend of the season.

49.74 percentage points separated him and Gameweek 1 runner-up Aguero two weeks ago. This time around the gap is much smaller, the Manchester City man’s 22 percent backing trimming Salah’s lead to just 26 percent.

There are two main factors in why that change has occurred. The first is Aguero himself, who has emerged as a much stronger candidate than was initially expected following his Gameweek 2 hat-trick against Huddersfield. No player in the league has had as many shots on goal as Aguero and this week he travels to face a Wolves defence that has already been breached four times. The only thing that tempers Aguero’s appeal will be rotation once again. While he has now started the last 15 home matches that he was fit and available for, on the road in 2017/18 Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) featured from the beginning more times than him, 12 starts to eight.

The second factor has been the form of Sadio Mané (£9.8m), who has outscored Salah in both Gameweeks so far and has matched him for shots in the box (six) and accurate ones too (four). So it’s no surprise to see the Senegalese international in the running for a third-place finish in the poll this week, with eight percent of the votes.

Expected to run Mané close for third place is Arsenal’s main man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). He is also around the eight percent mark ahead of an appealing fixture, this week at home to West Ham, even after blanking in the first two outings of 2018/19. Those backing Aubameyang may well be members of the Salah-less 45 percent who are worried about Aguero’s place in the Man City side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) completes the poll’s current top five after continuing his fine start to the season against Huddersfield. The Manchester City defender has four assists in his first two matches and has touched the ball in opposing final thirds more often than anyone else in his classification.

    Hamer
    Mendy - Holebas - TAA
    Mane - Bilva - Walcott - Pedro
    Auba - Aguero (c) - Firmino

    Begovic - Shaw - Schneiderlin - AWB

Press conference at half one. I’ve not heard anything about an injury, just had a touch of cramp in the last game.

What dictates your captain choice? Form, fixtures, position or a combination of all 3? One thing that always surprises me as a reason for choice is price. “Why even own a 13m player if you don’t captain him every week”? Managers often forget that players are usually priced based on their previous season; where they weren’t necessarily a premium choice/most exspensive. This year is salah, last year it was Kane. To me price should guarantee a starting birth not a captaincy.

I don't get the "why even own a £13m player" logic when captaining. A player is usually that price because it's assumed they'll score highly over the course of a season, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll score the most that GW

Exactly. I read this a lot last week with Aguero - his price justified his captaincy. Players over the years, Yaya, Ali, Mahrez even salah last year, overlooked due to their price.

    4. Ruth_NZ

I have a strong preference to captain a player in a home game. That's another factor.

You are right about Salah. You don't need to captain him every week to justify 13m but if you aren't captaining him 50%+ of the time then he'll have a hard job justifying his valuation.

Having only 2 premiums (10m+) and rotating the captaincy between them is often a wise idea in the early season when budget is restricted. You can maybe afford 3 premiums later when TV has grown a bit or when low-priced bargains have become evident. The Vardy/Mahrez/Alli year (when they were all around 6m) was ridiculous in that respect; basically budget became a non-issue that season.

Rotate - agree. Aguero last week, Salah this week (based on fixture and form).

When you say premiums, Ruth, whats your definition for that? Mine is 10.0+.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 24 days ago

Yeah, 10m+ is broadly where I'd peg it.

Up to 9m a player can feasibly deliver value without captaincy (if they do well). 9.5m is borderline; it's pretty hard to do but just about possible, especially over shorter runs of favourable fixtures. Once you reach 10m that player is probably impacting your team negatively in terms of overall points potential unless you are using them successfully from time to time as a captain.

The one caveat to this is that you need to make use of your whole budget. It is quite easy to pick a squad that will deliver great value in terms of points per 1m spend if you only spend 90m. But then you have 10m unused and gaining you no points at all, so it would be self-defeating. A lot of FPL management revolves around how we maximise the points we get from that last 10m of budget. And even though the 10m+ player is unlikely to deliver the greatest possible value, they may well be predictable at least.

Anyways, not to get into a long essay. 😉

I reluctantly have Salah but I wouldn't unless ownership was not so high. I captained Kun last week over Salah for fixture reasons.

Salah at home usually captain for me unless there is dip in form both for him/Liverpool.

I then prefer obvious player like Aguero and Kane when they have juicy fixtures too. Usually I don’t gamble on captain, which may sound a bit boring 🙂

I think last time salah had a dip in form was when he played for Chelsea!

Not boring not to go with the majority/sensible choice as long as you have a few differentials.

    Captain for this week query

    1) Mane-been my C for last 2 weeks and seem to be on form, Lfc normally do well against Brighton. Home game

2)Kun- did extremely well last week, against a newly promoted team in Wolves, proven goal scorer. always a risk of being Rotated but chances are Pep wont do that just yet, Away game

Arne is quality. It doesn't matter what team he plays in or who he is up against. WHM haven't settled yet but that will happen. They have a good manager who will get it sorted.

I’d probably take a punt on Guendouzi. Schneiderlin was looking good if you’re willing to go without him for a week.

Stephens if he falls in price tonight. If he doesn't then Zambo Anguissa seems nailed on for Fulham too. Guendouzi isn't nailed on which is pretty much all you want from your 4.5 midfielder.

    Patricio
    peltier vvd mendy
    Salah (c) Hazard Rich moura
    King auba (vc) Arnie

    Fab--cairney--zanka-WB

Used my FT to go for Aguero to Auba, granted Im sure I should have sold Peltier or Zanka, (Zanka is a starter and is ''due to be fit'' but I doubt it, WB is not leaving as he is too good a value and his price is still 4.1)

So ideally peltier starts, but if I sell who do I sell him for of I sell Zanka?

best 4.0 or 4.5 options for the potential hit?

    1. GoonerByron
      • 15 Years
      8 years, 24 days ago

Why on earth would you sell Aguero?

      1. Gol D Roger
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 24 days ago

fairly certain Jesus will start, not necessarily meaning Aguero will drop, but Pep will certainly plan to introduce different combinations before the break, Auba has a good run, and a tempting fixture, so going for it,

ive had a good start thus far so taking the gamble

Worth a -4 to replace one of them?

Already have Auba as the ARS cover for this week.

        Nope. Big fat zero.

        Fab/Foster
        Mendy, PvA, Luiz
        Salah, Moura, Kante, Neves
        Kun, Firm, Auba

I can live with that but a -4 is tempting
