Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with a much more clear-cut captaincy discussion this week, but there’s still plenty to analyse before the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the stand-out candidate with Liverpool hosting Brighton and Hove Albion, while Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is his main competitor.

However, there are, as ever some interesting differential candidates worth looking at.

We’ve gone over the results of our most recent poll and the underlying data to help you pick the best one once again.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

It is Salah who runs away with our Captain Poll for the second time this season. As of Saturday morining around 16,000 Fantasy managers had cast their vote to give the Egyptian a 48 percent share.

However, even though a home fixture against Brighton is considered just as appealing as the Gameweek 1 hosting of West Ham, Salah should fall well short of the majority he enjoyed for the first weekend of the season.

49.74 percentage points separated him and Gameweek 1 runner-up Aguero two weeks ago. This time around the gap is much smaller, the Manchester City man’s 22 percent backing trimming Salah’s lead to just 26 percent.

There are two main factors in why that change has occurred. The first is Aguero himself, who has emerged as a much stronger candidate than was initially expected following his Gameweek 2 hat-trick against Huddersfield. No player in the league has had as many shots on goal as Aguero and this week he travels to face a Wolves defence that has already been breached four times. The only thing that tempers Aguero’s appeal will be rotation once again. While he has now started the last 15 home matches that he was fit and available for, on the road in 2017/18 Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) featured from the beginning more times than him, 12 starts to eight.

The second factor has been the form of Sadio Mané (£9.8m), who has outscored Salah in both Gameweeks so far and has matched him for shots in the box (six) and accurate ones too (four). So it’s no surprise to see the Senegalese international in the running for a third-place finish in the poll this week, with eight percent of the votes.

Expected to run Mané close for third place is Arsenal’s main man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). He is also around the eight percent mark ahead of an appealing fixture, this week at home to West Ham, even after blanking in the first two outings of 2018/19. Those backing Aubameyang may well be members of the Salah-less 45 percent who are worried about Aguero’s place in the Man City side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) completes the poll’s current top five after continuing his fine start to the season against Huddersfield. The Manchester City defender has four assists in his first two matches and has touched the ball in opposing final thirds more often than anyone else in his classification.

Does the RMT tool need a little work? It's putting Kamara ahead of Tomkins despite a.) predicting a higher score for Tomkins b.) the fact that Tomkins has more points so far and c.) the fact the Tomkins has played 180m and Kamara is only played 118 minutes?

Does RMT simply favour attacking players?

Almost certainly a symptom of expecting Tomkins to be more likely to play. The predicted score you see is a function of how many points the player is expected to score, taking into account likely game time.

So, if Kamara starts, the model presumably thinks he will score better than Tomkins, so it recommends that you play him.

The model also thinks that Kamara is unlikely to play, so his anticipated points are low.

      Does this make sense?

Happens a lot with goalkeepers - if you have Mignolet and Ryan it will (I assume) tell you to play Mignolet even though it expects Ryan to get more points.

I've explained that dreadfully but I *think* this is what's going on.

The 'suggesting you play the player despite having a ower score' is due to rotation. It is telling you that, if Kamara plays, he is statistically more likely to score more points than Tomkins but, as Tomkins is more nailed, he has a higher GW value. It's one of the reasons why Aguero's numbers have been much less then Salah's. Aguero historically gets rotated more.

I mean I saw people discussing it, didn’t know if they actually did it. Good for me really.

Bilva to Mkhi is a downgrade and it will show in the weeks to come.

Interested to hear if you think Bilva will be a regular starter whilst KDB's out and beyond? Have him but a bit nervous about game time

I think so, but I can’t predict Pep’s lineups after he actually benched Walker and Sterling. But we have this risk with every City player.

The way I see it, based on his form and KDB’s absence, he should be nailed for now. And from Pep’s comments after the last game, the new formation seemed to specifically to Huddersfield because they played 5 at the back last time they met. And anyway, despite Bilva seemingly starting at RWB, he was the furthest forward bar Aguero.

It'll be interesting to see how he gets on this week (if he starts and where). I had him from GW1 with the intention of getting rid after a couple of games. Now I'm hoping he's going to be a key player for them whilst KDB's out

Ederson (Hamer) - Mendy, Alexander-Arnold, Schlupp (Bennett,Wan-Bissaka) - Salah, Mane, Richarlison, Mkhitaryan (Guendouzi) - Aguero, Aubameyang, Kamara.. Should I play Kamara or Guendouzi GW3? ...or should I maybe swap Ederson to some 4,5 like Hennessey/Fabri/Foster/Hart and then upgrade Kamara to Ings?

I'm not fully sold on Guendouzi as a reliable 4.5 midfielder. I can see him getting dropped. Some like Stephens or Zambo Anguissa seem to be more nailed on and are likely to provide the same 2/3 points.

He has more succesful tackles/interceptions than any other player so far and played 180 minutes already.. Seems to me like he´s keeping his place ahead Torreira or Xhaka.. or maybe I downgrade Ederson and take Iwobi ahead of Guendouzi as looks like Emery will play 1 in front.. assuming it´s Laca who starts from bench.. front three might be Mhkitaryan, Auba, Iwobi..

It's a it of a downer going into Friday already having spent FT -4 pts due to price fall panic (Dale Stephens , I'm looking at you....). Would take some of the stress out of the game if transfers were only done on Thursdays & Fridays (implying max 0.2 increase). But then, part of the game is also keeping a cool head, tight knees and a long term strategic view 🙂

I'm sure it costs me at times but I almost never transfer before Saturday morning. I feel getting solid team news wins in the long run vs 0.1m gains especially with rotation being a factor for 'bigger' teams

To help with your strategy, I think you could bring your transfers forward to Friday evening. You should by then have all the team news but will beat price rise/falls on the friday night.

Only for first 4-5 GWs early transfers can be justified. I did Jota+King+Daniels to Mkhi+Ings+Alonso on Sunday night and by tomorrow morning it will probably cost 0.7 more to make the same move (Jota -0.2, King -0.1, Alonso+0.2, Mkhi +0.1, Ings +0.1). It is a reasonable amount to take the midweek injury risk I think

Am I right thinking there is a bit of a fixture swing after GW8? Could be ideal time to WC with 2nd International Break between GW8 and GW9?

Thats my plan also, must be the "Rodney" connection. Good luck with it.

Absolutely. From this distance it seems like the ideal time to WC and I'm really hoping to make it.
