Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with a much more clear-cut captaincy discussion this week, but there’s still plenty to analyse before the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the stand-out candidate with Liverpool hosting Brighton and Hove Albion, while Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is his main competitor.

However, there are, as ever some interesting differential candidates worth looking at.

We’ve gone over the results of our most recent poll and the underlying data to help you pick the best one once again.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

It is Salah who runs away with our Captain Poll for the second time this season. As of Saturday morining around 16,000 Fantasy managers had cast their vote to give the Egyptian a 48 percent share.

However, even though a home fixture against Brighton is considered just as appealing as the Gameweek 1 hosting of West Ham, Salah should fall well short of the majority he enjoyed for the first weekend of the season.

49.74 percentage points separated him and Gameweek 1 runner-up Aguero two weeks ago. This time around the gap is much smaller, the Manchester City man’s 22 percent backing trimming Salah’s lead to just 26 percent.

There are two main factors in why that change has occurred. The first is Aguero himself, who has emerged as a much stronger candidate than was initially expected following his Gameweek 2 hat-trick against Huddersfield. No player in the league has had as many shots on goal as Aguero and this week he travels to face a Wolves defence that has already been breached four times. The only thing that tempers Aguero’s appeal will be rotation once again. While he has now started the last 15 home matches that he was fit and available for, on the road in 2017/18 Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) featured from the beginning more times than him, 12 starts to eight.

The second factor has been the form of Sadio Mané (£9.8m), who has outscored Salah in both Gameweeks so far and has matched him for shots in the box (six) and accurate ones too (four). So it’s no surprise to see the Senegalese international in the running for a third-place finish in the poll this week, with eight percent of the votes.

Expected to run Mané close for third place is Arsenal’s main man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). He is also around the eight percent mark ahead of an appealing fixture, this week at home to West Ham, even after blanking in the first two outings of 2018/19. Those backing Aubameyang may well be members of the Salah-less 45 percent who are worried about Aguero’s place in the Man City side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) completes the poll’s current top five after continuing his fine start to the season against Huddersfield. The Manchester City defender has four assists in his first two matches and has touched the ball in opposing final thirds more often than anyone else in his classification.

My confidence has taken a ruffling at the start of this season over some really marginal decisions/bad calls!

Am going to dig in and take stock for a couple of gameweeks. Hazard is calling tho...

Fair point well made. I agree ive started fairly well with 180 points but there have been some hairline decisions which have come off. I always follow your articles and comments with interest as you are usually on the ball. Good luck with your climb back up the ranks, i hope the patience pays off.

as long as Bilva is starting i am keeping him. 7.m for a regular city midfield is a steal.

it was easier for me as i did Jota to Mhki.

I like the look of the Spurs options. Davies & Trippier are the two which jump out. Kane will be hot soon. Eriksen and Alli are also good options. Lots to pick from.

The wildcard is dull for a reason, but it should support being able to switch to other players without hits.

          So Alonso > Trippier, Mané > Hazard, Salah + 4.5m to Kane + 5m

But the former players are better options at the moment.

            8 years, 24 days ago

I am not sure I agree.

            I prefer the look of...

            Trippier - Hazard - Kane - TAA

            over

            Alonso - Mane - Salah - Tomkins

            1. Demel
              • 15 Years
              8 years, 24 days ago

Although I do agree with the switch players without hits. Team structure is very important - as is having a bench who plays.

I think I do too! But I'm going to let Salah have his game v Brighton then switch to Hazard for CAR, BOU, whu.

Trippier will come in for Alonso around GW7

If you've kept Mahrez for his price drop (and fair play for doing so), I think I'd keep this week then look to switch for Hazard.

Pep is almost certain to switch to 4123 vs Wolves to cause their wingbacks issues. Yes, that's only my opinion, no one knows for sure, but if he does then I think it'll be Sterling plus one of Sané/Mahrez.

            5 TAA
            5.5 Fraser/5.5 PVA

Gave me a bit of flexibility so had cover for the unexpected early season line ups.

Then Alonso went crazy 2 weeks in a row so did
            AWB to Alonso
            Ramsey to sessegnon
            King to Ings.

Now left with no cheap bench players and weekly roulette

Press alert....Some bloke on the Guardian is saying Ageuro has announced his retirement and will never play again. This decision was reached after seeing Andy Carol as a England hopeful for the last world cup.....

Anyone know what's happened to Mark (Sutherns) this year? Why so little of him on here, why's he dropped off the Scoutcast and where can we catch up with his output?

I've kept him in. Figured he'd start this week, and had no pressing replacements. Also seen he has NEW after wol though, so he might be hanging around a bit longer!

    Two Free tranfers this week

    Lucas Moura & King OUT

    Mkhitaryan & Wilson IN

    Thoughts please.

Just Moura to Mikki? Or do you need to free funds up for this. Give King one more week.

I dont need funds but if wilson scores again his will go up again as well i think. Plus kings is going down.

Yes I see. Do it - Mikki in is a better shout than Moura for next few weeks in my opinion and King to Wilson for the reasons you've given.

Who should I play this weekend? Pick one.
    A) Fraser - Everton (H)
    B) Zaha - Watford (A)
    C) Pedro - Newcastle (A)

    1. Phrilly
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 24 days ago

      B)
Zaha will definitely play and CP are playing well, Chelsea have struggled a Newcastle and Pedro may lose out to Hazard.
Fraser's a good budget option but Brooks is out playing him at Bournemouth and is due.

    Foster
    Alonso - Mendy - TAA
    Salah (C) - Mané - Mkhi - Richarlison
    Aguero - Mitro - Ings

    Hart, W. Hughes, Perreira, WanB

Gone for a stronger defence and relatively light up top.

    morning fantasy football athletes.
im a bit late i know. why does awb point stats have him down as conceding 2 goals, when he wasnt on the pitch for 2nd against LIV

Because the rules say you still get penalised for goals conceded after the red card; which is fair enough.

would be fair enough if a goal came as a direct consequence of the red card
        thanks for the rule reminders

Does anyone think the comments pep made about Agüero after the Huddersfield match make him less likely to be dropped? Saying he'd never seen Agüero like this before etc

I think what he did to Huddersfield makes him less likely to get dropped.
