Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer more questions, this time ahead of Gameweek 4.

We may have one Gameweek 3 match left to play, with Manchester United hosting Tottenham Hotspur in Monday Night Football, but there are still plenty of talking points.

That includes who managers should replace the suspended Richarlison (£6.7m) with, the dilemma of the Manchester City midfield and whether or not we should be looking to differentials yet.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 4 Question Time:

Chief #FPL Manager – This man has finished inside the top one percent six times in his career as a Fantasy manager and is one of the biggest influencers in the FPL Twitter-sphere.

Ben McNair – Australian FPL manager Ben has four finishes inside the top 5,000 so far and is an expert in all things metrics-related.

Az – Finished in the top 1,000 last season and is a regular on the ScoutCast and Scout Picks article.

QUESTION ONE – CHIEF

Should I sell Richarlison for the two Gameweeks he’s suspended or bench him? And if I sell him, which players are the best replacement options?

Chief: “I think it makes sense to sell Richarlison before Gameweek 4, rather than benching him. His straight red card on Saturday means that he’s due to receive a three-game ban, which means he won’t be available for Premier League selection until 23rd September.

“I have no doubt that his price will drop more than once over the next fortnight as FPL managers look to fill a key attacking void in their teams.

“In terms of a replacement, two names spring to mind.

Roberto Pereyra is viable as he has scored three goals in three matches but he has some tricky upcoming matches.

“With that said, the fixture run seems more generous for Theo Walcott and he’s also racked up three attacking Fantasy returns, despite having created fewer chances and having fewer shots on goal than the Watford man since Gameweek 1.”

QUESTION TWO – BEN MCNAIR

Is it worth getting in players who have really low ownership to try and make up lost points over first three weeks? What do you look for with these poorly owned players? Do you take risk before form and favourable fixtures?

Ben: “Ignore ownership. Ignore overall ownership. Ignore ownership in your forum/social media bubble. Whatever deficit you could be facing after three Gameweeks is easily recoverable over the remaining 35. Get the players you think will score the most points. Other managers will make mistakes. The ‘template’ will change over time. Play like you’re in front.

“When considering the rank impact of a ‘differential’ relative to a ‘template player’ with slightly higher expected points, think of a bell curve with an average just to the left of zero. Don’t let your eyes be lit up by the shiny area under the curve to the right of zero, which represents a lower-than-50% chance of a ranking boost, without sober recognition of the larger area to the left of zero, which represents a greater-than-50% chance of a ranking tumble. This also makes for great chat at dinner parties.

“Differentials can be fun, but, if you’re interested in results alone, I don’t think there’s much of a case for getting them until after Gameweek 30. Make your peace with having highly-owned heavy hitters, because if you don’t have the leader of the captain poll in most weeks, you’re in for a train wreck of a season.”

QUESTION THREE – AZ

Last year it was worth having a Man City midfielder even if they missed the odd game. Given Guardiola’s diversity of choice, is it best, in fact, to avoid completely and go for two at the back with Aguero up-front?

Az: “For the first part of this question, I really don’t think we have the wealth of options that it would seem from the City midfield.

“Mahrez and Sane are both premium priced players who do not currently have the backing of Pep, so are automatically out, as while we could potentially handle a premium priced City player who misses the odd game, nothing from the start of the season suggests that these two will be first XIers anytime soon.

“That leaves Sterling and the two Silvas as our main considerations.

“Sterling seems likely to play most games, but his price tag puts me off hugely and, while I think he has a part to play in our seasons, other premium-priced options (Salah, Hazard, Mané, Aguero) are more appealing.

“Bernardo Silva seems to be a victim of his own versatility, we never quite know where he is going to play but for 7.6, I think you can make a case for including him, just don’t expect to see him set the world alight.

“I think Peps favourite, David Silva, seems a fantastic option though, and for 8.5 I think he could be a set and forget in your midfield as he seems likely to play most games and showed against Huddersfield that he can run the show and pull all the strings in De Bruynes absence.

“I think you can also make a case for considering Gündogan at 5.5. He may not be a guaranteed starter but when he does play, does take set pieces and does have a good eye for goal. For the price, he may be worth the risk.

“I am not personally a fan of doubling up at the back with City, 5.5 just seems too much to spend on a goalkeeper, especially when you consider how well the premium priced defenders are scoring.

“Ederson has barely any chance of getting any bonus, makes few saves and I do wonder about City’s clean sheet potential with their chopping and changing of the backline.

“A cheap goalkeeper and a premium defender (such as Alonso) wins out over Ederson and a sub £6.0m defender for me.

“An expensive keeper also leaves you quite inflexible, and I feel like FPL is in total flux at the moment, so being able to change with the times is so important and every million is so valuable.”

      Depends on your reasoning.

Mane was absent against Brighton - if this is your soul inspiration behind the transfer then I’d tread carefully. Heavy hitters do not always score and to base on last weeks fixtures is dangerous, when Mane could take Leicester apart ... considering how high the full backs push up and expose the back 2.

    Current team :

    Foster - Fabianski
    VVD - Mendy - Shaw - AWB - Boly
    Salah - Mane - Maddison - B Silva - Fraser
    Auba - Tosun - Kamara

Is it wise to wildcard now or hold until after the international break? Really afraid of Alonso and Kun hauls this week.

Anything ITB? I wouldn't wildcard this - if you had the spare 0.3m then swap Auba for Aguero for 1FT but if not, perhaps downgrade Shaw (to Sakho?) and get the extra cash there and take a -4.

      1. The Greenback Boogie
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

I am leaning towards taking a -4. One of these two options as I am not sure B Silva will start the next match.

        A. Mane + B.Silva - Hazard + Gundogan/Walcott
        B. B.Silva + Shaw - Pedro + Alonso

        1. cpo001
          • 7 Years
          7 years, 6 months ago

Pedro will likely make way for Hazard, and I wouldn't be selling Mane either, so neither.

If you are afraid of Alonso and Aguero hauls then why not get one of them in for a -4 as per the above? I'd personally rather have Aguero than Hazard if I had to choose one for the long term.

    Hi,

Is Richarlison out for Pedro worth -4?

    Already have Hazard and Alonso.

Wilson to play instead of Rich this week and probably Obi-Wan next week. I really think I'm set to have Rich on the bench for two GW.

Only thing if is Pedro starts GW 4-6, then it could be worth with -4, but not sure on his nailedness....

Looks like goals from Kane and/or Pogba or 0-0 in today's match is the result that would have the biggest impact on FPL rankings. United and Spurs players with an ownership over 5 %, sorted by ownership:

    Kane 27.8 %
    De Gea 25.5 %
    Trippier 24.1 %
    Pogba 18.8 %
    Eriksen 11.7 %
    Vertonghen 10.7 %
    Shaw 8.8 %
    Rashford 8.3 %
    Lukaku 7.6 %
    Alli 7.6 %
    Lloris 7.4 %
    Davies 5.8 %

Yeah, 1-1 with Lamela and Fellaini scoring would be an excellent result, as they have a combined ownership of 0.8 %.

Important match for United in real life terms as well, especially those highly owned United players and certain Jose.

Cheers for the original post. Looks like a lot of people near the top have Shaw. Hoping he doesn't do much tonight as I benched him (same with DDG, started Hamer instead - bad luck).

The Captains Poll is going to be very very interesting this week.

Salah, Mane, Hazard, Aguero, Aubameyang/Mkhitaryan ... dare I even mention the Walcott hype train!

Who we all thinking? So many favourable fixtures.

I don't think it will be interesting at all - guessing Aguero will win by a landslide.

            Arsenal V Cardiff
            Hazard V Gung-ho Bournemouth

Kun is who I’m on, but can equally see Aubameyang finally turning up or Hazard actually going mental

‘’With West Ham fans clamouring for information on the attacker’s physical state, reliable source Claret and Hugh have suggested that the prognosis on the star is positive.

Their report states that Arnautovic will be monitored after taking a bang on the knee against Arsenal, but he left the Emirates Stadium without the need for crutches and that the knock was relatively manageable“

          Considering a -4

          Robertson > Alonso
          King > Wilson/Jimenez

May look to bring in Alisson or Gomez/Trent to cover Liverpool defence when I WC

          Worth it?

Yeah. Trent is tempting though as cover. He should get some attacking returns soon.

But your right. Wouldn't want to lose Robbo and then he get goals/assists

I wouldn't ditch Robbo, any other routes to Alonso, I'm looking at Luiz and King out for him and Jimenez as well.

Only other routes I can think of is to either do King > Jiminez and

              A) Downgrade Bilva > Pedro/Mkhi, etc
              B) Downgrade 4.5 GK (Currently Patricio/Begovic)
              C) Downgrade Salah/Mane (Dangerous thinking)

I had Rich from GW1 (6.5) and he's now 6.7. Should I sell him and then get him back again when he's available or just keep on my bench?

Also, thoughts on keeping Aubameyang? I know he's dropping in value but feel he might come good soon...

Shouldn’t really have got Aub with no form but since you did seems a bit silly to remove now

You can sell him when he is 6.7, then you'll make a profit.

But if he drops to 6.6, your sale price would be 6.5, leaving with no profit. It's all about alternatives.

I'd be keen to swap Rich for Walcott or Pedro because these two seem to have the best fixtures (short term)

          A) Jimenez (whu)

          C) Mitrovic (bha)

          Which of these to choose?
          1) Rich + Firmino -->Hazard + Ings/Jiminez (-4)
          2) Rich -->Walcott
          3) Rich --> Pedro
          4) Rich --> Madison
Was on 3)Pedro but his early sub is issue. Also Wally stats seem unsustainable. Plus dont know if comfortable letting go Firmino considering how great he played vs BHA

What do you think about this plan for my team?
          - Use 1FT this week (maybe Bilva -> Mkhi)
          - WC next week (sort keepers, Peltier, Cedric and maybe Stephens, and possibly more)

          Pickford Speroni
          Robertson Mendy PVA Cedric Peltier
          Salah Mane Bilva Walcott Stephens
          Aguero Wilson Tosun

          0 ITB, 1 FT

I would just sort Peltier to Bennet. That way you can keep WC for later and Bsilva gets a good game. Can advice me above mate?

Save FT. Don't wildcard just to improve bench, use it when you need it.
