Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer more questions, this time ahead of Gameweek 4.

We may have one Gameweek 3 match left to play, with Manchester United hosting Tottenham Hotspur in Monday Night Football, but there are still plenty of talking points.

That includes who managers should replace the suspended Richarlison (£6.7m) with, the dilemma of the Manchester City midfield and whether or not we should be looking to differentials yet.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 4 Question Time:

Chief #FPL Manager – This man has finished inside the top one percent six times in his career as a Fantasy manager and is one of the biggest influencers in the FPL Twitter-sphere.

Ben McNair – Australian FPL manager Ben has four finishes inside the top 5,000 so far and is an expert in all things metrics-related.

Az – Finished in the top 1,000 last season and is a regular on the ScoutCast and Scout Picks article.

QUESTION ONE – CHIEF

Should I sell Richarlison for the two Gameweeks he’s suspended or bench him? And if I sell him, which players are the best replacement options?

Chief: “I think it makes sense to sell Richarlison before Gameweek 4, rather than benching him. His straight red card on Saturday means that he’s due to receive a three-game ban, which means he won’t be available for Premier League selection until 23rd September.

“I have no doubt that his price will drop more than once over the next fortnight as FPL managers look to fill a key attacking void in their teams.

“In terms of a replacement, two names spring to mind.

Roberto Pereyra is viable as he has scored three goals in three matches but he has some tricky upcoming matches.

“With that said, the fixture run seems more generous for Theo Walcott and he’s also racked up three attacking Fantasy returns, despite having created fewer chances and having fewer shots on goal than the Watford man since Gameweek 1.”

QUESTION TWO – BEN MCNAIR

Is it worth getting in players who have really low ownership to try and make up lost points over first three weeks? What do you look for with these poorly owned players? Do you take risk before form and favourable fixtures?

Ben: “Ignore ownership. Ignore overall ownership. Ignore ownership in your forum/social media bubble. Whatever deficit you could be facing after three Gameweeks is easily recoverable over the remaining 35. Get the players you think will score the most points. Other managers will make mistakes. The ‘template’ will change over time. Play like you’re in front.

“When considering the rank impact of a ‘differential’ relative to a ‘template player’ with slightly higher expected points, think of a bell curve with an average just to the left of zero. Don’t let your eyes be lit up by the shiny area under the curve to the right of zero, which represents a lower-than-50% chance of a ranking boost, without sober recognition of the larger area to the left of zero, which represents a greater-than-50% chance of a ranking tumble. This also makes for great chat at dinner parties.

“Differentials can be fun, but, if you’re interested in results alone, I don’t think there’s much of a case for getting them until after Gameweek 30. Make your peace with having highly-owned heavy hitters, because if you don’t have the leader of the captain poll in most weeks, you’re in for a train wreck of a season.”

QUESTION THREE – AZ

Last year it was worth having a Man City midfielder even if they missed the odd game. Given Guardiola’s diversity of choice, is it best, in fact, to avoid completely and go for two at the back with Aguero up-front?

Az: “For the first part of this question, I really don’t think we have the wealth of options that it would seem from the City midfield.

“Mahrez and Sane are both premium priced players who do not currently have the backing of Pep, so are automatically out, as while we could potentially handle a premium priced City player who misses the odd game, nothing from the start of the season suggests that these two will be first XIers anytime soon.

“That leaves Sterling and the two Silvas as our main considerations.

“Sterling seems likely to play most games, but his price tag puts me off hugely and, while I think he has a part to play in our seasons, other premium-priced options (Salah, Hazard, Mané, Aguero) are more appealing.

“Bernardo Silva seems to be a victim of his own versatility, we never quite know where he is going to play but for 7.6, I think you can make a case for including him, just don’t expect to see him set the world alight.

“I think Peps favourite, David Silva, seems a fantastic option though, and for 8.5 I think he could be a set and forget in your midfield as he seems likely to play most games and showed against Huddersfield that he can run the show and pull all the strings in De Bruynes absence.

“I think you can also make a case for considering Gündogan at 5.5. He may not be a guaranteed starter but when he does play, does take set pieces and does have a good eye for goal. For the price, he may be worth the risk.

“I am not personally a fan of doubling up at the back with City, 5.5 just seems too much to spend on a goalkeeper, especially when you consider how well the premium priced defenders are scoring.

“Ederson has barely any chance of getting any bonus, makes few saves and I do wonder about City’s clean sheet potential with their chopping and changing of the backline.

“A cheap goalkeeper and a premium defender (such as Alonso) wins out over Ederson and a sub £6.0m defender for me.

“An expensive keeper also leaves you quite inflexible, and I feel like FPL is in total flux at the moment, so being able to change with the times is so important and every million is so valuable.”

Competing with Willian who in my opinion is a better player. It looks like Pedro's spot to lose but he will never be nailed on with Willian lurking.

      Patricio
      Shaw Mendy Robertson Tomkins
      Salah .….. Mkhitaryan DSilva
      Firmino Aguero

or would you take a transfer hit and do a double swap?

Yeah United fan. I'm not totally convinced by Pogba yet, we wont score that many goals so Pogba shouldn't get many goals/assists. Although I do think he will produce more this season than last season.

As a relatively new manager in FPL, I'd like to ask some of the more experienced managers a question regarding 1st wildcard.

I see Andy's comments on twitter talking about his WC being potentially close but currently he doesn't feel his team needs it.

I'm very satisfied with my current squad until inevitably I won't be so my question is, how do you decide in advance when to play your WC? How can you be happy with your current squad and decide, right in 3 (4/5/whatever) gameweeks that you are going to WC.

I'm the same. I actually quite like my team but have no way of getting Alonso so will just have to do without and hope. Don't think my WC is worth spending for just one player.

The way I would look at it is the later you can leave it the more advantage you might have over other managers later in the season

However you don’t want to be carrying a weak squad just to achieve this.

if you look at your team and think that they have good fixtures or in good form that’s great. but there will obviously come a point where multiple players start to lose form or fixtures turn and suddenly there are better players to have. There may also be a time where several players suddenly look very attractive that you can’t get without restructure (I.e. kane/auba/hazard all start firing at once.

In general terms these are the times to WC. I would say a good rule of thumb is that it’s time to WC if you look at your team and think I NEED to change 5+ players, maybe less if there are key players you need to get in quickly.

Very hard to give hard advice as some people will play differently but that’s my view

            1. Pep says

Thanks. I get your points and I do agree that the longer your squad can keep pace with the early WCs, the greater advantage you will have (in theory).

Theres 4 or 5 changes I'd make at the moment but these are just fringe players and they've been performing fine so far so I'm happy to stick with them. Not gonna get carried away by the likes of Mitro (2 away games incoming) or Pedro (destined to play 60/70mins max) or even Walcott (purely because of AWB's performances in the opening gameweeks).

I just hope that when it is time to wildcard, I won't be stubborn and try to drag it out.

There's no certain time of WC.
If you're satisfied with your team performance and OR don't do it.
If you don't need more than -8 hit for transfers, don't do it.

I understand there's no certain time to wildcard, I feel you've misunderstood me. I'm asking how one manager can say, right in 3/4 weeks, I'm going to play my wildcard and I'm going to take some punts over these 3 weeks to exploit the immediate fixtures.

One thing to consider is to always wait for the transfer market to finish
Then there is also the first international break (Spetember). Because loads of players tend to get injured then (read Aguero - almost every year).

So this combined with the fact that after these first 5-6 game weeks we will get a clear picture of the teams that play well including any smaller teams that are outperforming (see Watford) then you could potentially play your wildcard around this info

Some managers this season choose a strong lineup for the first 2-3 GW and then planned a wildcard when all of the World cup players returns. I personally didn't do this because atleast 1 (or 10) GW will suck because of injuries and i like having a wildcard ready for those GWs. You could also use it for fixture swings but fixture swings can most of the time be planned for ahead. BUT injuries will most likely destroy the fixture swing transfer plans at some time.
The conclusion i'm trying to get to is, Injuries will always hurt, fixtures swings will always be hard to avoid and the first wildcard of the season is relatively harmfull to use early. Hopefully this is somewhat helpfull, reading it back one more time made me only question my on reasoning.... I hate FPL

            Reasons I'd use a wildcard:

            - got the initial team completely wrong (not happened this year thankfully)

            - a big wave of injuries/suspensions that'd cause -12 or higher

            - something like a Kane hatrick or whatever that'd require ripping up the team to get him in.

...other than that, plan it around a big fixture swing. There's one around GW8-10

If in any doubt don't play it. It's a great tool and can get bail you out of trouble.... Injuries, fixture swings, multiple players under performing while other players you don't have looking set to do well. I never play the wildcard early because the picture is never clear after 3-4 GWs.

          9. Try and hold as long as you can as if 2nd WC is optimally played summat like GW32, that is a hell of a long gap between WCs. Of course if you have to play it, play it though.

Usually obvious due to a major fixture swing and/or number of players coming in form which would require major surgery to get into your team.

Who are your three players with lowest ownership that you intend to play every now and then?

Mine are Pedro, Maddison and Wally

'Intend to play every now and then'. So you're rotating 6.5m midfielders. Interesting tactic.

I don't rotate anything but cheap defender slots. Too many mistakes get made rotating forward players and you end up wasting value on your bench.

              Barnet 1 - Dagenham 1 at ht

Daggers scored on the first minute with a fast break through Romain before Barnet found their shape. This was followed by a good 15 minutes where Jon Stills men really struggled.

However, they found a formation and started to apply good pressure, getting rewarded with a well worked goal for Fonguck.

Should be a good second half. Barnet looking stronger.

Az tweeted last night. That his replacement for Richarlison would be Groß or Gundogan. He doesn't like Walcott's underlying stats and Pedro's rotation risk.

I was also saying Groß last night, think I should just go with my gut, but all who are getting Walcott I actually think he is a great pick.

For the away game v Liverpool for defensive stability I believe, but he started the home game v Utd, he also scored in the TOT fixture last season.

Auba has been poor , emery needs to start him with lacazette ...

Hazard is sort of player who is best play in matches but fpl wise he hasn't been that good

Cheap option but for me, would like someone nailed.

Contemplating Schurrle as a Richarlison replacement. 11 shots seem like a good sign, and would also enable bringing in Alonso. How did Schurrle look?

Watched that game. Impressed with Fulham and impressed with him. Could be gold.

Thanks -- Gray does seem like an option as well. I thought he did well preseason.

Will hazard rise tonight? I’m in China so need to go to bed but would rather wait a day to see if there is any Arnie news...

                Thanks 🙂

                Is Hennessey 100% nailed?

I am on a WC and would rather not be changing goalkeepers around any time soon.

                Is Ryan a safer option?

Ryan safer. Also has 4.0 Button as backup. Very decent fixtures soon and they’ve looked pretty solid at the back.

This. Palace have 2-3 keepers who can play well so always a matter of one mistake

Bit skinny that. I've just had a play on the Spurs win @ 21/20

                  Also kane 1st goal @ 9/2

Why are people buying Hamer? He’s most definitely lost his place or at the very least, is one bad game away from doing so.

I only bought him my bench anyway. Weirdly, he's close to a price rise.
