Here’s hoping for a quieter Friday afternoon/Saturday morning than the one we experienced a fortnight ago.

Then, the momentum behind a widespread Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) captaincy was derailed by an article published in the Guardian suggesting Pep Guardiola was considering dropping his Argentinean striker for the visit of Huddersfield Town.

The considerable number of Fantasy Premier League managers who paid heed to the piece and moved the armband to another asset were “Jacksoned” when Aguero subsequently delivered a 20-point haul in City’s 6-1 win over the Terriers.

The reigning league champions play their second home league match of the season on Saturday evening, with Newcastle United the visitors to the Etihad, and the consensus in the Fantasy community seems to be that Aguero is the runaway favourite captaincy candidate for Gameweek 4.

There are several viable alternatives elsewhere, however, all of whom we’ll explore in the article below.

We begin by running through the Captain Poll on our site before analysing the Opta data and Rate My Team (RMT) numbers ahead of the forthcoming deadline on Saturday morning at 11:30 BST.

The Captain Poll

With 63.8% of the Fantasy Football Scout vote, Aguero is head and shoulders above any other armband option this week.

Aguero has 14 goals in 11 league appearances against the Magpies, eight of which were scored in the last two meetings between the sides at the Etihad.

The Argentinean is the second-most-bought forward of this round and is the most-owned player in his position, sitting in just under 49% of all FPL squads.

City scored 61 home league goals last season at a rate of 3.21 per fixture, while their visitors this weekend kept fewer clean sheets on the road (two) than any other Premier League side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) has been backed for the captaincy by 1.2% of our community, meanwhile.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is never far away from pole position in these armband polls and the Egyptian is the second-most popular option in our vote, with 11.6% of the nominations going his way.

Leicester have shipped 60+ goals for two seasons running and conceded on three occasions to Liverpool in this fixture last season, with Salah among the scorers: the 2017/18 Golden Boot winner had four shots in that fixture and made seven penalty box touches.

Salah also grabbed a brace in the return fixture in December, while he has delivered attacking returns in all three of his matches this season.

Sadio Mane (£9.9m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.1m) are the other two Reds to feature in our top ten, having been nominated by 1.6% and 1.2% of our voters respectively.

Chelsea are about to embark on an inviting double-header against Bournemouth and Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge and Eden Hazard (£10.6m) has been bought by well over 100,000 new FPL managers with those fixtures in mind.

Hazard sits third in our captain poll with 6.4% of the vote and has form against the Cherries: the Belgian midfielder has scored five goals in six league meetings with the south coast side.

Eddie Howe’s troops have conceded at least 60 goals in each of their three seasons in the top flight, while only Liverpool and Manchester City have attempted more shots than the Blues (52) so far this season.

Marcos Alonso (£6.7m) is the fifth-most popular candidate in our poll, meanwhile; the Chelsea left-back is the most-owned defender in FPL at the time of writing (in 33.7% of teams) and no player in his classification has had more attempts on goal this season.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (£10.9m) is sandwiched by Alonso and Hazard in our vote, with Arsenal up against Cardiff City this weekend.

The Gabonese striker has yet to record an attacking return this season and is up against a defence who have kept more clean sheets than 18 other Premier League sides.

Aubameyang’s form at the end of last season, however, hints that he could explode into life at any moment: no forward scored more goals than the former Borussia Dortmund man (ten) after his debut in Gameweek 26.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Theo Walcott (£6.7m) are the only other two players to have attracted more than a 1% share of the vote, meanwhile.

Anyone considering Laporte? Could he be this years otamendi? Plays left side so think he’s most nailed centre half just now for Man City and got attacking threat. Looking to double up with Mendy

Tempting ... not quite tempting enough for me though.

Anyone can score against anyone, as proven by city conceding to wolves and Huddersfield so you’re hoping for attacking returns aswell as clean sheets - the former won’t happen often.

Better 5.5s out there for other teams IMO.

Sounds madness but Bellerin over Laporte for me.

he is a great player, probabl ytheir best defender...i just fear that any game he could get dropped so not worth it....toom any other decent cb options that they could go with without changing City's game too much....Kompany, otamendi, stones

Have doubts in my current team and I will probably wildcard in the next few weeks and this week looks strong for fixtures - alonso trippier Walcott all have strong fixtures

You’ve answered the question yourself then mate.

There’s no right or wrong answer, on paper if I had your team I wouldn’t wildcard yet - but if you’re not happy then play the WC.

Seems strange to do it the day before match day though as you’ve missed price rises - something a wildcard is great for, trying to improve your TV.

He’s a very cheap enabler who you would have no intention of actually playing but who is nailed on so if you ever did need him you’re probably going to get his two points at least.

You need to really plan the WC and activate it at the beginning of the week to catch price rises - your team is good so I would hold now until the next big fixture swing

The kick times for the CL are disappointing, I thought that scheduling early and late kick off on every match day would eliminate fixture clashes between team from the same county but City and United both kickoff at the same time in MD1, Spurs and Pool do the same in MD2, City and United do so again on MD3, MD4 ,MD5 and MD6, as do Spurs and Pool again in MD5 and MD6.

WC Active. The team breaks down into two pots, 9 players always starting then the last 2 spots roatating from the remaining 5 outfield players.

    The 9 starters:

    Alisson
    Alonso | Mendy | Robertson
    Salah | Hazard | Walcott
    Aguero | Zaha

    The 5 Rotators:

    Mitrovic, Hughes, AWB, Bennett, Westwood

Walcott & Zaha maybe trasfered to others when fixtures change btw.

    1) What do we think?

    2) Is there a better 4.5 option than Westwood? Guendouzi(rotation risk with Torreira?), Stephens, Schneiderlin?

    1. Gol D Roger
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

      2) if you're looking for someone who gurantees starts, out of those options surely stephens

      1) solid, im more of a fan of rotating keepers on a lower price to ensure better purchases elswhere but its looking good, id maybe swap zaha for mitro this week, but thats a personal choice

    Alonso Mendy Robertson Shaw (AWB)

    Salah Mane Mkhi Bilva (Billing)

I only feel as though I'm missing Hazard (Going to try fit him in for bilva/Mkhi/Zaha)

Message for guys dealing with members comparison tool

When I compare [for example] Mkhitaryan against three other decent mids, the key passes stat for Mkhi changes for each player he is compared against.

Why is that please? I would of thought his key passes would remain the same whomever he is compared against ... cheers

Are you sure it's the stats changing and not the percentages that indicate which is the better key passer?

Yeah think so as the range varies from 3 to 9 key passes depending on who he is compared against

D'you mean the numbers in the boxes beneath 'stats summary'? Those are key statistics; not only passes but baps, involvement, etc. The +x key metric is relative to the compared player.

Yep the number in green/grey boxes directly beneath stats summary and heat map pitches.

Figured it might include other stuff other than passes [said that for brevity] but still confused when the figure changes.

Why would passes, baps and key involvement figures for Mkhi change when he's compared against different players?

Hey guys, whom to captain - Salah or Aguero and why?
I know most ppl will be captaining Aguero, but he will be up against a defence who put 10 ppl behind the ball. Also KDB isn't there.
Salah on the other hand is away. But a gut feel he will score against Leicester.

Look at Aguero's home figures, record vs NEW and what he did in his previous home game. Stop overthinking it.

So the same reasons we shouldn't have captained Aguero against Huddersfield?

Huddersfield defence is much porous compared to Newcastle

Newcastle expecting to get beat 22 - 0

Aguero. If I had a diff like Haz or Aub I'd be very tempted.
