Here’s hoping for a quieter Friday afternoon/Saturday morning than the one we experienced a fortnight ago.

Then, the momentum behind a widespread Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) captaincy was derailed by an article published in the Guardian suggesting Pep Guardiola was considering dropping his Argentinean striker for the visit of Huddersfield Town.

The considerable number of Fantasy Premier League managers who paid heed to the piece and moved the armband to another asset were “Jacksoned” when Aguero subsequently delivered a 20-point haul in City’s 6-1 win over the Terriers.

The reigning league champions play their second home league match of the season on Saturday evening, with Newcastle United the visitors to the Etihad, and the consensus in the Fantasy community seems to be that Aguero is the runaway favourite captaincy candidate for Gameweek 4.

There are several viable alternatives elsewhere, however, all of whom we’ll explore in the article below.

We begin by running through the Captain Poll on our site before analysing the Opta data and Rate My Team (RMT) numbers ahead of the forthcoming deadline on Saturday morning at 11:30 BST.

The Captain Poll

With 63.8% of the Fantasy Football Scout vote, Aguero is head and shoulders above any other armband option this week.

Aguero has 14 goals in 11 league appearances against the Magpies, eight of which were scored in the last two meetings between the sides at the Etihad.

The Argentinean is the second-most-bought forward of this round and is the most-owned player in his position, sitting in just under 49% of all FPL squads.

City scored 61 home league goals last season at a rate of 3.21 per fixture, while their visitors this weekend kept fewer clean sheets on the road (two) than any other Premier League side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) has been backed for the captaincy by 1.2% of our community, meanwhile.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is never far away from pole position in these armband polls and the Egyptian is the second-most popular option in our vote, with 11.6% of the nominations going his way.

Leicester have shipped 60+ goals for two seasons running and conceded on three occasions to Liverpool in this fixture last season, with Salah among the scorers: the 2017/18 Golden Boot winner had four shots in that fixture and made seven penalty box touches.

Salah also grabbed a brace in the return fixture in December, while he has delivered attacking returns in all three of his matches this season.

Sadio Mane (£9.9m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.1m) are the other two Reds to feature in our top ten, having been nominated by 1.6% and 1.2% of our voters respectively.

Chelsea are about to embark on an inviting double-header against Bournemouth and Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge and Eden Hazard (£10.6m) has been bought by well over 100,000 new FPL managers with those fixtures in mind.

Hazard sits third in our captain poll with 6.4% of the vote and has form against the Cherries: the Belgian midfielder has scored five goals in six league meetings with the south coast side.

Eddie Howe’s troops have conceded at least 60 goals in each of their three seasons in the top flight, while only Liverpool and Manchester City have attempted more shots than the Blues (52) so far this season.

Marcos Alonso (£6.7m) is the fifth-most popular candidate in our poll, meanwhile; the Chelsea left-back is the most-owned defender in FPL at the time of writing (in 33.7% of teams) and no player in his classification has had more attempts on goal this season.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (£10.9m) is sandwiched by Alonso and Hazard in our vote, with Arsenal up against Cardiff City this weekend.

The Gabonese striker has yet to record an attacking return this season and is up against a defence who have kept more clean sheets than 18 other Premier League sides.

Aubameyang’s form at the end of last season, however, hints that he could explode into life at any moment: no forward scored more goals than the former Borussia Dortmund man (ten) after his debut in Gameweek 26.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Theo Walcott (£6.7m) are the only other two players to have attracted more than a 1% share of the vote, meanwhile.

Obviously depends on Walcott’s output in the next couple of games. Also, I’m sure people will have more pressing transfers to make, so some will hold for a while.

I'm tempted to do Walcott to Maddison or Fraser depending on how the land lies in a few games. That said, Arsenal away isn't the prohibitive fixture it once was.

One scenario is Walcott is up to 7.1 by GW7 after hauls home to Huddersfield, West Ham & Fulham, and Rich has crept back down to 6.5 or even 6.4.

A Theo > Rich move banks 0.4/0.5 in TV for those who got him at 6.5.

Lots of ifs & buts & maybes

"One scenario is Walcott is up to 7.1 by GW7 after hauls home to Huddersfield, West Ham & Fulham"

I for one would love that. Walcott has been a bit of a disappointment in a blue shirt but looks like he might be flourishing under Silva. Expecting great things for the next few games. Hammers at home is my first trip to Goodison this year.

Brave or stupid to triple captain Aguero this GW?

Has scored 14 goals against Newcastle and bagged a hat trick last home game.

Whenever I have used the triple captain chip in the past, I've always opted to use it later on in the season and wait for a double gameweek, when the player is often rested for one of the games.

the best time to use it is when the majority of people are captaining a player you don't fancy to score well for whatever reason - so if you're triple captaining anyone this week it should be Hazard (with the idea that Aguero will fail/get a 1-point cameo)

I think DGW's lend themselves better to bench boost and free hit chips as you benefit from more than one player playing more than one game

      2. SADIO SANÉ
        • 10 Years

case in point (from my point above):

Son (TC) was the play last season - we knew beforehand that Kane could possibly miss the Swansea game and he did (kinda) but most people still captained him anyway.

Sanchez (TC) did haul yes, but everyone else (pretty much) captained him too.

Son (TC) would have made much more ground over Kane (c) than Sanchez (TC) would have over Sanchez (c)

In the best DGWs, (e.g. 35, 37) the best chips are free hit (11dgw players) & bench boost + wild card (15 dgw players).

There is likely to be another DGW, where only a couple of teams have doubles, and they usually hit during fixture congestion. Hence last two seasons my TC has been on double Kane (1pt tripled to 3) and Aguero (7pts tripled to 21).

A monster single GW is the best use of a triple cap for me. I think there might be better ones than this week though.

    Wc team:

    Hennessey (Foster)
    Bellerin Mendy TAA Alonso AWB
    Salah Hazard Mkhi (Fraser) (Billing)
    Mitrovic Aguero (c) (Wilson)

    Any suggestions?

Not keen on the milfs - rest are good.
No Bilva, Moura, Mane could hurt.
      Prefer Arne to Mitro.

I’ve ended up with something similar when trying to fit Salah, Haz & Aguero in. You end up with a midfield like that. Think I went Mitro & Arnie in my drafts though.

I’m saving my WC in case I need to get Kane in.

For those with Danny Ings, what are you doing this week?

'Mark Hughes reveals that Danny Ings has a "bad blister" on his foot, but has trained today and will be monitored ahead of the weekend.'

If you have him, are you keeping? If you're keeping, are you starting him or have him on the bench?

I have him. If I didn't, I wouldn't consider bringing him in I don't think. And I'll probably play him, although WB is my other option and he looks nice for this week.

Less afraid of a cameo performance from Ings then I might normally be though - seems to me with a blister he either is ready or is he isn't.

This. 5.5 striker you should probably expect about 7 or 8 goals a season. Ings should get this even if he misses 10 games.

Have to disagree. Price is related to his output over last few injury-hit seasons and that he was 3rd choice at Liverpool when prices released.
He's a good player and I reckon he'll easily get 10 goals this season if he stays injury free.

Hopefully this hulk will contain the Ings vs AWB debate a little.
Unless is ruled out, I'm on AWB now. Ings will most likely come off the bench from the sounds of it, but who knows.

Starting to regret this move a little bit - but he is cheap, is their best chance of attacking points (just) and most of us will look elsewhere on wildcard soon anyway.

Playing him with AWB on the bench if I get a Richarlison replacement.

So the whole Ings doubt is wrapped up in whether to spend points to ditch Richarlison too.

If he plays I fancy him to score versus a Tomkins less Palace backline.

Keeping Ings and starting him and Wan Bissaka. I expect Palace to keep a clean sheet whether he plays or not, personally, so for those managers who only want to play one, I'd go with Wan-Bissaka. A blister seems quite a minor injury, surely this can easily be wrapped up in bandages and painkillers given? Especially as he's the only decent attacker Southampton have.

On a more general point, Ings is posting promising xG stats and taking lots of shots from good positions (see article linked). For 5.5m, if he can stay fit, he's the perfect budget striker for our squads.

Not sure why people say either 0 or 90 mins. For me he is my first sub and WB plays.

            The info we have is:
            - He had a bad blister and did not train for a few dats mid week
            - He was in full trianing yesterday and probably today too

            Therefore:
            - Very possible that due to his mid week absence he was not part of the tactics / training work done to counter Palace defense and therefore Hughes may choose to keep him on bench as impact sub and instead play Austin (in form - scored on Tue) and Gabbiadini (well he is crap but better than Long)
            - He may get a run out in last 30 if game is tied or CP ahead

City's home goal scoring record against bottom 6 teams is remarkable.
          - 3.3 goals at home per game over the last 4 seasons, next best team is Arsenal with 2.42 goals.
          - In the last 4 seasons Aguero averages a return (goal or assist) in 82% of home games against bottom 6 teams. The best record of any player. Pelle is next best at 69%.
          - 3 of the top 5 returning players against bottom 6 teams are City players (Jesus, Sterling and Aguero).

City's home goal conceding record is also remarkable. It's over the last 4 seasons its 4th worst among all the teams playing in top flight this year. For the tiny % of people captaining Mendy, don't! Only Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Brighton are worse.

The only stats to counter captaining Aguero: Salah's underlying stats this year are better than Aguero's in every way.

It is, but there is a difference between hitting the post and hitting row Z, yet both would count as a shot off target.

He was expected to be a rotation threat after Pep’s comments which is why he wasn’t considered at the start. Since KDB’s injury he’s pretty much nailed now so I’d expect his ownership to be going up as the weeks go by.

Still one to monitor. Might get him in if I downgrade either Mane or Bilva (I want to upgrade my 3rd striker). Obvious concerns over his playing time going forward though, so, you might be absolutely correct.

Not really... He posts average shots, key passes and dribbles per game. And that's in Ligue 1 for PSG where Neymar and Mbappe shoot as much as Kane! His stats even in the PL have been very ordinary. Only shot twice in the game against Man Utd, scoring both, but he's not exactly a great finisher... I think the appeal is certainly in hindsight of his previous performance. I just don't think all teams will be as open at the back as Utd, so he won't have all that free space to run into

I’d play Fraser. Despite the opposition, Bournemouth’s attack has been much better than Southampton’s. Fraser has looked great.

RMT. Had 2FTs and did Richarlison & Mane -> Walcott & Hazard.

          Looks good to go?

          Fabianski (Patricio)
          Robertson, Mendy, AWB (S.Cook,Peltier)
Haz Salah (C), Walcott Mkhi (Cairney)
          Arnie, Aguero King

Looks decent, although even with rotating keepers you're not going to get many CS points. At least Fabianski will partly make up for it with save points.

Yeah removing Mane was a tough pill to swallow and he is the type to come up with 2 goals and 2 assists in any game BUT got cover with Salah and Robertson but don't feel comfortable without Chelsea cover. All about diversifying during early days

my trio up front : Morata, Aguero, King
my mittfield : Salah, mane, Shurrle, neves, stephens.

should i take a -4 and exchange Morata and king for hazard and a cheap 5m forward?

Too inconsistent. One DD and then a row of blanks. Plus he gets hauled off early in games too. Not for me.

On a wildcard, 2 decisions left.

            Which 4.5 keeper?

Mitro and Neves or Zaha and Stephens?

5th mid will be required to play, will either be 442 with AWB or 352 without.

Stephens looks likely to lose 0.1m in next few days, neves has just gone up 0.1m.

Ryan has 2 good fixtures then city and spurs then decent fixtures again.

probably Mitro and Neves as can see Neves doing more than Stephens and the forwards could go either way

Salah because his hit rate in terms of games where he gets returns is absolutely astonishing.

I would still probably cap Aguero if I had him though. I seem to be in a very small minority...

Any advice on my WC team?

              Currently on:
              Hennessey / Hamer
              Alonso / Mendy / Robertson / Shaw / Wan B
              Hazard / Mane / Moura / Walcott / Pedro
              Aguero / Mitro / Wilson

I am torn between Moura + Hazard or Salah + Stephens. It feels really wrong to not have Salah.

Also, have I overspent in defence?

That’s the conundrum this week. I need to play the striker against the current Hammers defence. Palace clean sheet could be gone in the blink of an eye
