Here’s hoping for a quieter Friday afternoon/Saturday morning than the one we experienced a fortnight ago.

Then, the momentum behind a widespread Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) captaincy was derailed by an article published in the Guardian suggesting Pep Guardiola was considering dropping his Argentinean striker for the visit of Huddersfield Town.

The considerable number of Fantasy Premier League managers who paid heed to the piece and moved the armband to another asset were “Jacksoned” when Aguero subsequently delivered a 20-point haul in City’s 6-1 win over the Terriers.

The reigning league champions play their second home league match of the season on Saturday evening, with Newcastle United the visitors to the Etihad, and the consensus in the Fantasy community seems to be that Aguero is the runaway favourite captaincy candidate for Gameweek 4.

There are several viable alternatives elsewhere, however, all of whom we’ll explore in the article below.

We begin by running through the Captain Poll on our site before analysing the Opta data and Rate My Team (RMT) numbers ahead of the forthcoming deadline on Saturday morning at 11:30 BST.

The Captain Poll

With 63.8% of the Fantasy Football Scout vote, Aguero is head and shoulders above any other armband option this week.

Aguero has 14 goals in 11 league appearances against the Magpies, eight of which were scored in the last two meetings between the sides at the Etihad.

The Argentinean is the second-most-bought forward of this round and is the most-owned player in his position, sitting in just under 49% of all FPL squads.

City scored 61 home league goals last season at a rate of 3.21 per fixture, while their visitors this weekend kept fewer clean sheets on the road (two) than any other Premier League side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) has been backed for the captaincy by 1.2% of our community, meanwhile.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is never far away from pole position in these armband polls and the Egyptian is the second-most popular option in our vote, with 11.6% of the nominations going his way.

Leicester have shipped 60+ goals for two seasons running and conceded on three occasions to Liverpool in this fixture last season, with Salah among the scorers: the 2017/18 Golden Boot winner had four shots in that fixture and made seven penalty box touches.

Salah also grabbed a brace in the return fixture in December, while he has delivered attacking returns in all three of his matches this season.

Sadio Mane (£9.9m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.1m) are the other two Reds to feature in our top ten, having been nominated by 1.6% and 1.2% of our voters respectively.

Chelsea are about to embark on an inviting double-header against Bournemouth and Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge and Eden Hazard (£10.6m) has been bought by well over 100,000 new FPL managers with those fixtures in mind.

Hazard sits third in our captain poll with 6.4% of the vote and has form against the Cherries: the Belgian midfielder has scored five goals in six league meetings with the south coast side.

Eddie Howe’s troops have conceded at least 60 goals in each of their three seasons in the top flight, while only Liverpool and Manchester City have attempted more shots than the Blues (52) so far this season.

Marcos Alonso (£6.7m) is the fifth-most popular candidate in our poll, meanwhile; the Chelsea left-back is the most-owned defender in FPL at the time of writing (in 33.7% of teams) and no player in his classification has had more attempts on goal this season.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (£10.9m) is sandwiched by Alonso and Hazard in our vote, with Arsenal up against Cardiff City this weekend.

The Gabonese striker has yet to record an attacking return this season and is up against a defence who have kept more clean sheets than 18 other Premier League sides.

Aubameyang’s form at the end of last season, however, hints that he could explode into life at any moment: no forward scored more goals than the former Borussia Dortmund man (ten) after his debut in Gameweek 26.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Theo Walcott (£6.7m) are the only other two players to have attracted more than a 1% share of the vote, meanwhile.

It's never paid off for me in DG before so i'm tempted to try something else this year. Bench boost in double GW has doe much better for me. His record is unreal against Toon.

tempting, but I feel the downside is too much. If he you get 2 points on your TC in gw 4, its a loong season without it. Feel it gives me some false safety to keep it

True but it's not worked out for me before in DGs and I've found the DGs to be unreliable towards the end of the season with tired legs, rotation etc.

Could anyone point me to any decent WC debate... I’ve just hit it and currently in full mull !

    My first draft:

    Ederson, (Hammer)
    Mendy, Alonso, Wan-B, Pereira, (Bennett)
    Salah, Hazard, Fraser, Iwobi, Moura
    Aguero, (Jimenez, Zohore)

      Really don’t like this bro.

Zohore Iwobi Bennett Hamer all disgusting

Pereira Moura seem bandwagoney and are short term I think.

recommend to press in a 6.5-7.0 forward. Its a long time till your next WC, will make this more flexible.

      Iwobi downgrade,

I also feel 5.6 is too much for a keeper. Get 1 or 2 4.5's. Ideally one, and use the money elsewhere.

    Who would you start?

    1) Foster vs TOT (CS odds: 5.80)
    or
    2) Patricio v whm (CS odds: 3.60)

Agreed Patricio is bookies favorite but isnt Watford defensively sound now compared with last season? Thoughts?

I'm going patricio. Wolves had been unlucky in both the everton and leicester games to concede 4 when the xG conceded was only 1. Then held city off for a long period. I don't think either will keep a clean sheet so it could come down to save points, which Foster hasn't got any of yet.

Goal and assist i'd say. A few seasons back i TC'd Kun in a single gameweek and he got a brace. It is tempting but with 34 GWs still ahead its a long ride with no TC chip in your pocket if it goes wrong....

Have a look at the season. The double game-weeks normally occur around GW34/35/36/37. Have a look at Liverpool's fixtures over those 4 GW's and then ask yourself if it's worth risking the TC this week...

yes you are missing something, apart from that whatever game in hand they have both Liverpool and City playing weak teams plus most teams are shoe horned into a DGW have nothing to do with a missing game but to help the weekend.

Look at the games that could be postponed (normally because of FA cup progress), for both Pool and City there are not many tough games from GW27 onward...then pair that with the matches from GW34-37 and it just seems like there should be alot of TC opportunity around then...

Yeah but If both teams are in the Champs league knockout rounds then rotation is inevitable at that stage. It's happend every season. Who has been your TC on DGs previously that got you major points?

Harry Kane in 2016/2017 season - can't remember who he played but he scored 4 goals on the Thursday and then 3 goals on the following Sunday...

Sterling - the 1 game resting might have us all fooled he is not nailed, but Pep later clarified it was recovery times for some after playing so soon back from holiday. Walker and Raz fall into that camp.

Sterling matched Kun last season and imo will do v. well vs NEW.

Kun not being nailed was a myth last season. Pep has more options now. Why would you possibly believe that he is nailed now when he wasn't last year when the squad is stronger and the rivalry more fierce.

I think too many people have the three-GW blinkers on. Let's reconvene at the end of the season.

He wasn't. He was subject to the Odd benching, which makes him NOT nailed. A truly nailed player starts every game hes available. None of the cityplayers were nailed last season. Aguero was probably one of the players that were less of a subject to rotation, but he was far from nailed.

To add to his status as not nailed, theres the injuryrecord aswell. Aguero is a player that will allways come with some risk.

Ballerin. He'll be the next desired attacking full back. Most of arsenal's attacking play runs through him. Should have had 2 assists in the game against west ham. If we can add clean sheets he'll be a must have at 5.5

Tosun is due some goals. Been very impressed by his work rate and hold up play, guess he'll be more of a focal point with Richarlison injured.

This looks like a perfect game for Hazard to announce himself on the season. Can see a haul.

Differential-wise, if Vietto does well again then he is suddenly a cheap 3rd striker option.

Jimenez to come good for wolves in a great run of fixtures. Hazard almost has to score... so he won't, because that's what he does when we expect him to.

Brighton are being overlooked for a great attacking fixture.

It’s not rocket science - “ceiling” is an FPL term used to describe the maximum points you could see a player scoring in a game. It’s not saying they will score their maximum.

Let’s try this - what is the maximum points score you could see Salah getting v Leicester, and what is the maximum you could see Kun scoring at home to Newcastle. Is one higher than the other?

I'm with MBP and, by extension, Geoff. Salah is a freakishly regular points scorer whilst Aguero, more than anyone, can score a freakishly high number of points in a single game.

I would say that Aguero has proven himself to have the highest ceiling in the PL because he scored those five goals a few years ago. To my knowledge nobody has matched that yet. I also think that by focusing on 'hauls' and not consistency we can miss out on points. Just because a player can and has scored five in the past doesn't mean he always will.

The "ceiling" in FPL only refers to points, not number of goals.

Aguero got 5 goals, which was what, 25 points? Salah got 28 or 29 last season vs Watford. So yeah, someone has beaten it.

          1. _Make
            • 9 Years
            7 years, 6 months ago

Then it's simple - whoever has achieved the highest points in a single game has the highest ceiling. If anyone has beaten 25 (it must have been unless Aguero was booked) then sure, they have the highest ceiling. If Salah did get 28/29 then it's him.

BUT ceiling can be misleading. Remember that time when Leon Flipping Best scored a hat-trick? Regularity is the key I think.

I know, I never really look at ceiling. At least not when it's between players like Aguero and Salah. They both have high ceiling and that's that.

        Barely higher.

Newcastle aren't the pushovers people are painting them to be. They've been impressive against Spurs and Chelsea and were very unlucky to come away with nothing in both games. Of course, Man City are a different animal and are playing at home.

If it was the Fulham fixture instead this week, I would sort of agree. Their defending has been very shaky. City should run riot.

            • 9 Years
            7 years, 6 months ago

No, because it read "undoubtedly the higher ceiling" before. That's not accurate when the fixtures are close.

            Now the edit looks better.

              • 16 Years

I think you’re both over egging newcastle’s Defensive capabilities, and misunderstanding the original point of Kun having a higher ceiling.

Whilst Newcastle are undoubtedly a good defensive side, and well capable of keeping clean sheets, we are talking about a team that has already conceded four goals in 2 games at home, and will likely be missing Lascelles as his row with Benitez rumbles on.

They are going to Man City, as most teams do, with damage limitation in mind, and they may succeed in frustrating city.

But on City’s day they would hit Newcastle for 5 or 6 (or more) and on Kun’s day he would be heavily involved.

No one has said Kun will definitely score more than Salah at the weekend, but he has the higher points ceiling in their respective fixtures.

I have never had a playing bench of 3 players - This way i will have a "strong" bench in at least having Wan-B and Wilson/Zaha on the bench. And the Hamer angle is because i am always burning myself at rotating GK's, missing pen saves and saves in big matches.

What's your plan to get Salah in? I think the only reason to ignore him would be for Hazard or Kane but you don't have either - I'd just get rid of Aub now you have WC - since it's going to cost you a 4 point hit likely if you are downgrade him to upgrade elsewhere.

    3. MTPockets
        7 years, 6 months ago

Looks a lot like Salah out to enable Auba + Bellerin. Not a fan of that at all personally.
I have Pedro but really Alonso's looking best price-adjusted value at Chelsea.

I decided to go without salah from the beginning as the team was too unbalanced and he hasn't started on fire realistically so plan is to stay without him (risk I know bit willing to take it and mane has delivered for me so far).

Again kane is an option I have been looking at.. auba has been in from beginning it would be stupid to remove him now as fixtures take a good turn.. sticking by that he must come good soon. Alonso.. everyone jumped on him.and I can't see another double digit haul.. it happens last year he Went quite for weeks and weeks but that could bite me again.. questions are is hazard a must or could Pedro return at a good price?

WC team, abit of risk taken to omit Salah but he will probably be back in my team by gwk9 after Liverpool's tough run. Trying to get some players with great fixtures who we all know has the potential to go big.

        Ederson
        Mendy Alonso Shaw
        Hazard Mkhitaryan Lucas Walcott
        Aubameyang Aguero Zaha

        Hamer Wan-Bissaka 4.5m mid Bennett

One option that I'm still deciding on is

        A) Mitrovic and Neves
        B) Zaha and 4.5m

        Thoughts?

For those considering TC Aguero this week.... even if DGW has burnt you in the past, at least wait till you see what the fixtures might be like in them. If none look that good and you want to go with a SGW, there will still be plenty of games towards the end of the season that are plum home fixtures.

GW33 has City (H) vs Cardiff and Spurs (H) vs Brighton
GW26 has Liverpool (H) vs Bournemouth also gw36 Liv (H) vs Hudds

that's just to name some of the big ones past GW24...might be more that I missed or even a few more in earlier GWs. So there really is no rush to find a good SGW fixture if you don't want to use a DGW.

In those DGWs though, your FH and BB are better options. Double 11 players, or double 15 players, is far better than triple one player. There's usually only 2 good DGWs, and sometimes 1 less appealing one earlier on.

If someone thinks Aguero can get 20pts this week, I think they should go for it.

FH is ideal for a blank gameweek in which not many teams play. Massive advantages can be gained over a lot of players by playing a FH then.

-4 for mane to haz? I am just so scared of Hazard this week. I think hes going to score big. Already have pedro.

If you take a -4 he has to outperform Mané by a goal or more and I don't see that as a given. I'm lucky in that I already took a hit to get him last week and it paid of, but it so nearly didn't.

Point is that I don't want a big plunge in the OR (currently at 5k) and I have had a good start this year. Mane has never really scored well against Leicester anyway. See the members stats above for RMT. Hazard just below Salah.

The other players around you will be where they are because they have the same players. It's too early in the season for any past points to have come into play, and most have not played wildcards.

If you have a Mané/Hazard selection problem you can bet your hat the most of the top 5k do too.

Chelsea had 80%+ possession last week. Hazard had one shot on target. I don't see the -4 urgency yet.

Hard without seeing your 15 man squad.. need to know who starts and strength of bench. If both starting then A, if one can be benched then C

If you were backed into a corner having to start Danng Ings with a "really bad blister",

Would you consider going -4 with this? No money in the bank and ive missed the prices on pedro and wally now in for rich

There is a HT on Ings. People making mountain out of molehill (read blister).

Did you just get Ings for this game vs CPA? Keep him and play him if you need to.

Surely you don't own Ings to be a nailed-on starter? He's in my starting line-up but if he doesn't play Kante steps up. That's what a squad is for.

Looks good. Have you considered Ryan/Button and GK combo?

Also, I would personally prefer Dilva to Mkhi if on WC. You could do this by downgrading Neves and possibly TAA
