FPL Question Time – Salah vs Mané, international break and Wildcard tips

More names from our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer your questions, this time as we go into the first international break of the campaign.

The big question which we’ve had plenty of submissions on is whether Mohamed Salah (£13.om) should come out of our squads.

We’ve got some opinion on that conundrum while the subjects of transfers during the international break and Wildcard tips are also discussed.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 4 Question Time:

James Egersdorff – You can’t get much more experienced than this man when it comes to FPL. After yet another season inside the top 5,000 managers in 2017/18, James is a Fantasy Football Scout ‘Hall of Fame’ legend.

Tom from Who Got the Assist? – One half of one of the fastest growing FPL podcasts of recent times.

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

QUESTION ONE – JAMES EGERSDORFF

Do we have enough information to be reasonably sure that Mane provides a better points return over Salah and if so, should we be looking to move Salah on?

James: “The lack of a double-digit return from the ‘Egyptian King’, combined with the smoking hot start to the season from Mané has led many FPL managers (myself included!) to investigate the possibility of doing the unthinkable and removing Salah from our squads.

“As a pre-Gameweek 4 Wildcarder, it’s fair to say the idea of cashing in on Salah did look attractive. I spent the week tinkering with my squad given with treasure trove of riches his £13m opened up. It looked like a combination of Mané and Hazard versus Salah and a (roughly) £7m midfielder here.

“It’s definitely a tough choice. We’ve only had four Gameweeks played and therefore only a small sample of data to base such a potentially season-defining decision on. So I kept the Egyptian in my squad.

“We must ask ourselves ‘do we feel that Mané and Salah will maintain their current performance levels?’ Mané is flying right now, with a score of 9.8 per game to Salah’s 6.8. To put that into context, if they were to continue that over 38 Gameweeks, Mané would smash the all-time FPL high score record (303 set by Salah last season) with a whopping 372. Do we really think he’s capable of doing that?

“On the other hand, Salah would weigh in with just over 258, which in fairness isn’t a million miles away from his optimum points per game levels seen in 2017/18.

“Working the figures again, this tells us Salah is underperforming against last year’s figures by around 15 percent, whereas Mane is massively overperforming, even when we factor in his 10-game absence last season.

“The question FPL managers need to ask themselves therefore is whether they feel Salah will make up the performance level deficit and return to the mean and whether Mane can continue to outperform his mean score by such a high margin.”

QUESTION TWO – HOLLY SHAND

How much team value can you potentially earn playing your Wildcard during the international break and is it worth using if your squad doesn’t need a major fix?

Holly: “The international break tends to be a steadier time for price rises and falls than many expect. So I’d expect perhaps just one or two players rising twice, to give the all important £0.1 million gained value.

“However, if you cannot afford the price swings to ditch underperforming assets for the in-form players, the Wildcard can still be valuable.

“Beware the fixture swings and chasing early season points though.

“Liverpool in particular have a tricky upcoming spell.”

QUESTION THREE – TOM

If you are not planning to use the Wildcard for Gameweek 5, how many point hits should we consider taking to make up an injury and suspension filled squad? Also, should we be making early transfer considering how fast players prices are rising?

Tom: “How many hits should we consider? Well, obviously this depends very much on your team and what the situation is.

“If you are dead set on keeping your Wildcard, I’d focus on getting a good XI out for Gameweek 5, after International Break, rather than fixing bench fodder – unless you are doing a combination move as part of your hit (i.e. moving a £4.5 defender down to a £4.0 to free up cash).

“That being said, I’d be thinking that if you need multiple hits to deal with your team’s injuries and suspensions then there’s no need to be stubborn about pulling your wildcard; your squad needs it.

“Should we make early transfers considering how fast players’ prices rise? It depends in what context.

“If there’s little to no midweek action, as we’ve seen at the start of this season, then an early transfer is a risk that can be worth taking.

“However as we saw with Wilfried Zaha and Kevin de Bruyne picking up training ground knocks you are never immune from a shock injury.

“But as we start to enter the period where continental football and other cup competitions return, I’d advise being more cautious with your early transfers as you may end up needing a hit to fix an impetuous move.

“Essentially: you’ll remember your overall rank at the end of the season, not your team value.”

Haven't WC but thinking about it and came up with this:

    Patricio (Hamer)
    Mendy, Robertson, Alonso (AWB, Bennett)
    Mane, Hazard, Sterling, Fraser (Billing)
    Auba, Mitro, Wilson

Thinking Sterling over Aguero as it allows me to keep Auba for fixtures, thoughts please? 0.0 in the bank

Interesting team but Sterling feels like a risk for that price and Arsenal look terrible at the minute so Auba another gamble. Rest very solid

Bet he is annoyed on transferring Deeney out. Must be hard to present your team each week if it is not going well, epxect this pushes decisions when normally you would be more patient.

    Fab - Foster
    Alonso - Mendy - Robbo - Doherty - AWB
    Salah - Mane - Bsilva - Miki - Westwood
    Aguero - Tosun - Kamara

    1 FT

Been playing 442, plan on getting a better forward it when I eventually WC, any changes before that for now though?
Miki, Tosun and Bsilva both annoying but think all will start next game with great fixtures and thinking of using 2FT next GW to get Mitro and Rich in

Appreciate any thoughts or feedback on this WC team. Been fiddling for a few days and think it's fairly settled now but open to challenges.

Current plan is Moura or Maddison to Richarlison when he's back for what it's worth

    Patricio / Hennessey
    Alonso / Mendy / Shaw / AWB / Bennett
    Salah / Hazard / Moura / Maddison / Billing
    Aguero / Mitrovic / Ings

Valid points lads. I'll go back to the drawing board. Hazard will prove difficult to acquire as I will need to run two 4.5 mids as I do not want to go without Alonso. Lacazette would have to go also, but Arsenal's fixtures are so juicy.

What do people think about Fraser v Pereyra. I posted my wildcard team and CAMZY suggested Fraser over Pereyra citing his better (just) overall stats (53%/47%). But I note that Pereyra has had almost double the number of shots in the box and double the number of shots on target, resulting in 3 goals, to Fraser's 1 goal. Fraser's other many superior stats have amounted to 1 assist, to Pereyra's 0 assists. The upshot of this is that Pereyra has 7 points more than Fraser.

Is this a case of ignore the overall stats and look at the ones that matter, is Pereyra's less sustainable than Fraser's

I know Fraser has better fixtures BTW but I own Wilson and trying to avoid double up

    1. Holmes
      • 10 Years

Might be due to fixtures but Fraser's numbers has gone down in last couple of games... No idea about Pereryra though

When the Fail comes back it could affect Pereyra's stats, either positively or negatively. But their fixtures are enough to put me off. I have Hughes, and he'll be 3rd sub for GWs 5 and 7.

This Salah Vs Mane question is a real make or break one for the wildcarders. I am currently busy with mine and looking at the following WC team options.

    non- SALAH Team:
    Ryan • Hamer
    Alonso • Mendy • Robertson • Wan-Bissaka • Bennett
    Hazard • MANE • DSILVA • Pedro • Fraser
    Agüero • WILSON • Mitrovic
    0.8 ITB

    SALAH Team:
    Ryan • Hamer
    Alonso • Mendy • Robertson • Wan-Bissaka • Bennett
    Hazard • SALAH • MADDISON • Pedro • Fraser
    Agüero • INGS • Mitrovic
    0.0 ITB

So in short, this is basically:
    A) Mane, DSilva, Wilson
    B) Salah, Maddison, Ings

The problem I had with the non-Salah team is that I had to create a backout plan because I really feel that Salah is going to be needed at some stage, plannig to go the full season without him at this stage is just too dangerous. Hence the initial idea was to have a short term team without him while this busy run of difficult games was ongoing, but this basically committed me to future transfers, most likely at the expense of Hazard. To be honest I am not seeing a significant weakening in the Salah team and now have him and Hazard in the team without the need to worry about eventual price rises.

    Which do you prefer?

B easily. I refuse to be fooled by the FPL points so far. I cannot see Mane outscoring Salah over the next 6 weeks or rest of season. Just a peak at the heatmaps and shots stats convinced me to keep Salah as only Liverpool cover on my WC

Yes, leaning to the same thinking as well. Expecting some regression from Mane and another great season from Salah.

Just been having a wildcard tinker (not pulled the trigger) and came up with this.

    Bettinelli Patricio

    Mendy Alonso TAA Trippier Monreal

    Mane Hazard Maddison Fraser Lingard

    Aguero Ings Mitrovic

    Thoughts?

Its not a done deal just a tinker but I would rotate with the fixtures. Main rotation would be Ings, Mitro, Fraser, TAA, Monreal depending on fixtures .

So for game week 5 I would go for

        Patricio

        Mendy Alonso Trippier

        Maddison Hazard Mane Fraser Lingard

        Aguero Ings

        Bettinelli Mitrovic Monreal TAA

i know did the this last year, but if you read the rules of price changes its clearly says wildcards don't effect as strong the rise or drop as normal transfers.its actually very slow in IB ,hmmmmmm..

I think the fact the Aubameyang's stats are bad, Lukaku's look dicey at United and Kane is borderline at 12.5 even when firing, means a lot of people are wondering what exactly they're holding onto their wildcards for when we have quite a lot of information already and the chance to act on it over a break

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 8 months ago

See that's the thing, I don't think 4 weeks is enough to form a pattern or give us enough information about how the season might pan out. Unless someone has had a disaster of a start I think a wildcard will be of much more value later. (when there's more information and when more rotation and fixture congestion kicks in)

        1. Pacer.
          • 9 Years

Depends entirely on your position now. That decision is not make in a vacuum and you're just speculating. People makes decisions based on the actual state of their team and the state of the game.

I don't see why a wildcard is key for rotation and fixture congestion. Those things happen infrequently and if you pick quality players you have to deal with it. Are you going to wildcard in some second string players who will be rotated in?

          1. Pierce34
            • 8 Years
            5 years, 8 months ago

No, not at all - but you never know which previously solid picks will end up being rotated unexpectedly. That was just an example. My main thing is that there isn't enough information about form and tactics yet four weeks in.

Take two seasons ago as an example: after four weeks, Chelsea in Conte's first year were in a bit of a mess, they had lost 3-0 to Arsenal and Conte didn't know his best team. Fast forward a few weeks later and Conte switched to 3-4-3, made the defence the best in the league and Alonso into a must-have.

There are still many questions this year - can Mane match Salah consistently? Which United will turn up for the rest of the year? Will Kane justify his price tag or will Aguero remain much better value? These will be answered in due course, and a wildcard will be useful to navigate the waters when they are.

This game works on a resolution of a few weeks at a time. You don't need to know how things are going to turn out overall, there's free transfers every week for that. You need to pounce as early as possible, within reason, on the emerging patterns. That couple with the current injuries, rotations, and inevitable injuries during the IB make this a prime time for many to wildcard. It's totally justified. You on the other hand are hoping that some as yet unknown things will change in the future and be to your benefit, and this is every bit as much of a gamble as acting on pre-season and 4 matches

                5 years, 8 months ago

I'm not hoping for anything - all I'm saying is that unless you've had a disastrous start and are missing a number of key players (no Alonso, Liverpool attack, Hazard and Aguero? Then wildcard, sure!), there's no need to wildcard since there isn't enough information. Of course it's on a team-by-team basis, but I see a lot of teams around wildcarding for really bizarre reasons - and a lot of them will end up wishing they had their wildcard later on.

A wildcard is not exclusively for disasters. The game's also about predicting when you have got the best from your players or when other players are coming into form or favour. Your team doesn't need to be in pieces to play it!

I guess then what I'm saying in that case is that if you've had a decent start, chances are the wildcard will prove more useful at tackling something unexpected down the line than in taking a few punts now.

I don't think I claimed there are no predictive considerations in a wildcard. Nobody plays it for that reason (IB injuries), but it is an incidental matter that will undoubtedly benefit % percent who have

Not many of us (FFS) are Kane Lukaku or Auba owners at the moment. I see what you saying but imo 4 game weeks is not enough data to make a full decision especially before the break. I think actually it calls very early for knee jerking transfers straight after that. way to precious in my opinion.

well without anything to back that up it's just speculation

The counter to your argument is that 4 weeks gives you a reasonable amount of information and that anyone who uses that to identify the prospects will get a march on you, while you are left praying that those decisions turn out to be bad and that you can reap the benefits later down the line

There isn't anything to back up that pre-season, 4 games and an IB is insufficient data to make a valuable prediction about what a good team will look like moving forward into the immediate future.

Still, I think there is enough evidence to back up that 4 GWs is insufficient data - just look at my Chelsea example above. There are lots of other similar ones too.

That's not data, it's an anecdote: an example of changes that may occur later in the season. There is no actual evidence here that a wildcard is better spent in, for example, week 8, than week 4. I am not arguing that a larger sample is not more powerful predictively, I am saying that in itself does not make it the right time to play your wildcard.

              Hey, it was 🙂

Was just trying to judge if you've got off to a good start. If you have and you can use FT to fix the odd issue then it makes sense a WC is far from needed. But I can certainly understand the urge to protect team value if you're left with a few stinkers in the short term.

same twisted same, i do understand. i saw so many posts with great looking teams asking if the team looks g2g after wildcarding, while the team they had was still so strong. i learned patients is a great tool in this game and if you are able to choose a decent site with a supporting bench your FT works wonders. But in the end its just my opinion, also its amazing that we are all having different playing styles otherwise we all end up with the same team same result without able to learn anything out of it. Loving it all the best to you twisted 🙂

And the best of luck to you, Hot Fuzz 🙂

Patience is a funny one. I need to be more patient but we also need to recognise when we've weighed up several factors and reached a conclusion which involves a points hit. For example, Salah out for -4 is nonsensical but if you think he may struggle ahead of Leicester and Spurs and you fancy an alternative like Hazard to do well v Bournemouth and Cardiff, then maybe make the move? I'd have done it for free but not for -4.

                  Such fine margins.

Popular players injured or benched.. Cairney, Mkhi, Zaha, Walcott, B.Silva, Liverpool fixture swing, people want Hazard in. I personally had some additional trash like Bellerin. Not hard to understand why people are wildcarding.

    Potential WC team:

    Patricio Ryan
    Mendy Robbo Pereira Holebas WB
    Salah Haz Pedro Fraser (Stephens)
    Aguero Laca (Kamara)

Would be a -12 hit without WC, which seems too much. Haz is the issue.

Is Firmino -> Lacazette a sensible move ?

      I'd probably prefer Vardy

Yes. The Brazilians in the Liverpool have the toughest travelling schedule.
It wouldn't surprise me if Shaqiri started ahead of Bobby at Wembley.

If I hadn't needed a WC I would have held. Think he'll do well over next fixtures

      Keeping.

May have to move Zaha on if injured longer than international break

To make up the cash for doing Mkhi -> Hazard, which one would you do?

    A. Walcott -> Hughes
    B. Zaha -> Bobby Reid

I have something to sort out, lads, and I'd really appreciate if you could help me out.

    I have 1 FT and 0.9 itb.

My midfield is Salah, BSilva, Mkhitaryan, Richarlison, and Fraser.

    What would you do?

If you've kept Rich for this long you can wait one more week

I'd shift Bilva before Mkhi myself

    Afternoon chaps

    My current team is:

    Foster/Hamer
    Alonso/Mendy/Shaw/AWB/Bennett
    Hazard/Mane/Salah/Fraser/McTom
    Zaha/Aguero/Kamara

with worries about a few, I have tinkered to this:

    Foster/PATRICIO
    Same back 5
    Hazard/Mane/Richarlison/Schurrle/Fraser
    Aguero/Mitro/Laca

Exact money. I know that Richarlison has one more match to complete ban - but have selected a more balanced team. However, I still like the first one!

Any comments on what to do would be great
    Cheers all.

What are the general opinions on Bilva's likelihood of a start against Fulham?

I am willing to take the risk. Home to fulham is a great fixture and city are chasing.

I would say likely. I thought MC were quite poor against Newcastle, I think he might bring him in as he made a diff when he came on. Mahrez under threat imo

If I didn't have both Zaha and Wally, I'd probably look to get rid. But as things stand I'm probably gonna gamble on him starting.

Basically nobody has a clue 🙂

I could argue either way, but I'd guess he will start. Key word is guess.

I think he gets back in the team. Mahrez and Jesus didn't do enough to keep him out.

It's between him and Mahrez I think. Aguero, Jesus & Dilva not involved in the internationals so i think they'll all start.

    Yes or No?

I have. Was initially annoyed I didn't do it for a hit last week, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

It's important that you put the extra 2.4m to good use to be worth it.
