Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

After speaking with David yesterday today’s Hot Topic is about some articles the writers would like feedback on, specifically the Scout Notes and the Lineup Lessons articles.

Do you have general thoughts about these articles? What is it in them that you like and what could be improved?

The timing of the Scout Notes is difficult as they are quite detailed – when do you prefer to read detailed accounts of the weekend matches? Saturday night, Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Monday morning, Monday evening, or some other time?

Do you find the information in Lineup Lessons useful? Do you feel it adds more than is in Scout Notes? The Lineup Lessons are closely tied to the Team News section as well - what are your thoughts on these features?

Is there duplication that is unnecessary, is there enough detail, and how can we improve these articles for you to get more out of them?

There is a new poll up – please go and vote to help us understand your impressions of the Scout Notes! Anything additional should be discussed in this Hot Topic.

I like scout notes as it helps with players I don’t own

I’ve nevrr read a a ‘line up lessons’ as I read them all over the weekend myself

My fave two articles ‘frisking the fixtures’ and ‘pre match preamble’ have been removed 🙁

Yes, Friskin' the Fixtures was probably most useful article.

Do you think it's useful every week or would every other week do the job?

Pre match preamble is now breakfast club. Which is much better

He drinking the fixtures is sorely missed.

Never read line up lessons unless im particularly worried in a cheap player

It will indeed - the current plan is rolling the article out on a fortnightly basis (every two Gameweeks), but I'd be interested to hear what frequency folk would prefer. My own thought would be that every week is perhaps too often, given that we analyse over a six-Gameweek (or longer) period - but I'm sure others will have a different preference.

Glad to hear frisking the fixtures will return, I agree with the posters above that its a very useful article to compliment the fixture ticker.

I think every fortnight is sufficient. You're right that every week is too much short term thinking IMO, not much will change in 1 week, but over 2 weeks is more of a swing and teams will come onto the radar and drop off accordingly. We would normally want to give our players a chance to impress over more than 1 week aswell! You could even make it every 3 weeks without it comprimising folks too much.

I loved the preamble. It was a window into how Mark was thinking- he's also quite a talented writer as well. I appreciate why he's not doing it, maybe one of the other writers could take a crack at it?

Yeah it was really nice it had lots of personality.

The decision was to put it on hold as some of the new faces wanted to get settled in a bit first. Not too difficult a piece to bring back but putting the right voice on it is important

Maybe have a star guest preamble each week. So one week villa ronka... the next get jay.... another get TM ... etc... would give us an insight into how different players that are doing well think and plan

Agree. Don’t have time for the breakfast club - always had a few minutes spare to read pre amble which was really well written.

Personally don’t like format of articles this season. Always loved the differential article, just seems a bit more detailed with extra players when it was nice and simple with 3.

I guess you guys have to evolve and change things but this season found myself checking Twitter a lot more than bothering with the site.

If it’s not broke - don’t fix it (dramatically)

Pre amble , scout squad, big numbers always my faves

I totally agree with you on the Line-Up Lessons - and I write it. I think they were useful in GW1+2 perhaps, given the uncertainty over systems and personnel, but becoming less relevant now and we cover a lot of it in Scout Notes anyway. It'd be interesting to hear more folks' thoughts on it but it's definitely at the top of our list in terms of thinking about changing the format/shortening.

I feel that with line up lessons its an article I "should" read, rather than one I enjoy reading, just in case I've missed something over the weekend. I don't think you need to list out the whole squads in the article as this info is available in multiple places. Maybe you could update the graphics in the team news section of the site on the monday with the most recent starting 11 for "at a glance" viewing though.

In terms of the content of the article itself, I think just keeping the "what we learned" part for each team would be sufficient for the bulk of the season. This would be with the aim of highlighting key OOP prospects, formation switches, manager hints on favoured players, etc. I think keeping the detailed format its currently in is viable for GW's 1 to 6/7/8, but after that the season should have settled down a bit and a more shortened format could be introduced. I think each team should be judged on its merits though - i.e. I think it would be more useful to spend more time on City if Pep is rotating frequently, than Burnley, say, if Dyche is keeping the same 11 for 10 weeks straight. Not every team needs to be treated equally.

Not really no, Mark had a personal touch on it that can't be replicated. He was the soul of the site, something that probably can't be replaced.
Sorry, this is the second time I have negative feedback to the site, I am just really disappointed that Mark isn't around anymore, since it became apparent how much his touch meant to the readability of the articles.

I really like the scout notes - they are a really useful report of the game from an fpl perspective, and are particularly useful if you haven’t managed to watch the game and/or catch the highlights on motd.

There could be scope to incorporate the line up lessons into the match reports, to have everything in one place.

If the Scout Notes are to be so detailed, I think they are best spread over a few days.
They would take too long to read if they are all published on the same day.

But perhaps the Scout Notes and Line-up Lessons could both be shortened and then combined into a single series of articles spread over several days?

As soon as they become available.

I know you’re under huge pressure with so much going on every match day, and there is also a speed vs quality trade off in all reporting, but because price rises have already begun on the Saturday, having rapid analysis (particularly on players who have been dropped or injured) can be very valuable.

Overall: great work on a top product.

Will start by saying that am still in awe of FFS and the work- much better analysis of football than in most newspapers. And all articles have value, but as you asked...
line up lessons is so detailed and does seem to duplicate w scout notes. That and very detailed scout notes I find too much detail.
Maybe a shorter line up lessons article summarising just a few of the key lessons without needing to cover every player/ every team?
Frisking the fixtures and preamble were great.
Timing with these articles is key to help with early transfers. Would rather have a short article before price changes than a longer article the next day.
But appreciate others might like the detail

The tables seem to have disappeared from the Captaincy article. I liked them as they allowed you to cover more players than the article itself mentioned. I know the data is all there for members to drill into, but I quite liked having a nice easy table to glance at alongside the write-up.

I don't really see the point of tables in the Captaincy Article for lots of players we have already rejected.
I prefer to see a more in-depth analysis of the main contenders.
If there are to be tables for a greater number of players, then these should be earlier in the week, perhaps in the article introducing the captain poll.

Line up lessons is too frequent, too long and frankly a bit annyoing. I've stopped reading them. Shorter and once a fortnight might be better.

I do miss frisking the fixtures because it's useful to have a narratiive overview of the ticker.

I personally find the Scout Notes way too detailed. I liked it better when it was shorter and more direct to the point. With all the fluff (ie. Huddersfield holding midfielder going off injured), it’s easy to miss the most important events of the week (ie. Alonso could have had even more attacking returns).

I really like the scout notes. I don't have a specific time that I read them but it's often on Sunday and Monday morning. I think the line-up lessons are a bit of an overkill. Especially now that most teams are settled I think the need for them is diminishing. If there are any interesting line up changes they can be covered in the notes. I really liked the pre-amble and would appreciate it if someone else tried to do something similar ( sharing his personal tinkering for the week).

I find Line-up Lessons useful, in particular the What We Learned section, and usually read them as soon as they come out. If I've watched the game referred to I often just read the WWL section.

Scout Notes is very useful as it contains extra knowledge, such as stats, manager quotes etc., that I wouldn't have got from the game. So it kind of widens my thinking, helps put the game results in context etc. I appreciate that these are detailed and that is what makes them useful to me. I don't have a set time for reading them, the sooner the better if I'm considering a transfer but wouldn't want to sacrifice detail for speed.

I see LUL as a more immediate summary of the key points of the games, whereas SN is a detailed review. There is a bit of duplication but both are helpful.

I prefer reading the scout notes on a Sunday; Saturday evenings I'm often busy anyway or I'll watch the match of the day highlights and draw my own FPL conclusions first from that. Then I enjoy reading the scout notes on a Sunday morning with a massive fry up and seeing how your conclusions match my own. I wouldn't try and rush the scout notes out on a Saturday if this means compromising the content to meet a deadline you've imposed on yourselves. The second batch of Scout notes can then follow on Sunday evening (preferred) or Monday morning.

I've discussed line up lessons above, but I do like the format of scout notes how it is, its one of my favourite articles of the week, more so that line up lessons. It is very detailed and well written, I see no real need for change here. Credit to the writer(s) and keep up the good work! 😀

I like the line-up lessons although I don't deny I often skip straight to the "what we learned" part to see team lineup speculation going forward.

-Scout Notes are great- timings wise ideally that evening or worst case the next morning.
-Am not particularly interested in Line Up Lessons- it can be useful if you have been entirely out of the loop but then Scout Notes fulfils that function for me. I get line up info from looking at the Team Lineups on the Sky football app.
-Apart from Scout Notes, the best article is the The Big Numbers and of course, as other posters have noted, the Pre-amble by Mark is a huge miss. However I have enjoyed its replacement, the breakfast club video....

Also don't read the line up lessons far to long and dull. I check all the starting lineups as they happen anyway. I think a quick article highlighting anyway major changes or hints would suffice

Please convince Mark to bring the preamble back.
We all miss it deeply. It was the single best piece of writing on here every single week and very often was pure gold. I understand Mark is doing more other things but this is one thing he really needs back on his site.

Scout notes is a decent read, particularly for those not watching the games. Ideally they would be soon after the games but certainly not later than Monday. After that, it's old news.

I can't say I read much of Line up lessons since this really is old news by the time we read it. Team news on Friday is the key pre-GW article.

I miss the preamble, frisking the fixtures. The Bookie Odds (Paddy Power or something) was a very useful article as well especially for captaincy.

I like the scout notes and the sooner they come out after the matches the better. I also liked when "Scout Notes" was in the title of the article instead of the article just being tagged as Scout notes. Makes me find them easier.

Another very useful article that isn't available anymore is What the fans are saying. Good to get the a sense of the consensus among fans of different clubs and what the atmosphere, the morale is like and what the fans expect from their teams.

What the fans are saying was a community article and I also found a lot of value in it. Weirdly when it stopped I started looking around for more specific fan produced podcasts and now listen to TAW, London is Blue, Arsecast, and some others. They tend to have more detailed knowledge and background about the players and match ups compared to the vast same that the FPL podcast community has become, although Applebonker’s FPL Toilet is a stand out for originality.

For what it's worth (and echoing a lot of comments on here)

        Favourite Articles:

        1. Big Numbers
        2. Pre match preamble with Mark
        3. Frisking the fixtures
        4. Say What
        5. Big numbers

Sadly it seems a lot of these have disappeared.

In terms of current articles, I'd agree that Scout Notes is a bit too long and detailed now, and risks missing the woods for the trees. The earlier format was better, more readable, and provided the crucial information anyway.

I'd also ditch lineup lessons given how much of a time sink it must be for the mods to compile it. Too long and unlikely to be read, I stopped reading it last season.

The Big Numbers is probably my favourite article. I do read the Lineup Lessons and they are invaluable but they only really need the What We Learned bit. I miss the Preamble. Scout Notes and Dugout Discussion are good too.

I'm not a fan of the Wisdom of the Crowd articles and have stopped reading them. I also find the Scout Squad articles boring and utterly pointless as they are not based on the same parameters as the game itself.

I'd like to see much more discussion of game concepts rather than just which players we should pick. There's an awful lot of absolute nonsense and old saws that are promulgated in the comments on this and other FPL sites and the fast moving nature of the site means there is no satisfactory way to discuss these matters.

          this.

I believe the first thing that you should improve is scout squad. we are not playing 1 week game, we all have is 1 FT each GW so what is the motivation to build a team that completly change each week. I find it totally unuseful for my side.

I still quite miss the wrap-up article that was available 2 years ago. It was sum-up all the essential points that we need for GW.

Don't change scout notes. Every readers needs to read different players. If you make them shorten we will face more templates. I prefer to read them on saturday evening in order to not miss an imminent price change.

I believe line up lessons and team news can be combined and would publish like thursday/ friday as there are already bunch of enough articles available earlier the week.

I find scout squad and scout picks quite useful for sanity checking I'm not overlooking anyone who should be obvious, and also particularly useful for playing in the draft version of the game where transfers are less limited.

I like Wisdom of the Crowd. Better than Lawro's predictions, possibly even better than Bookies Odds or DS Stats for predicting match scores, or can be used in combination with them. It gives a useful indication of which teams are most likely to score heavily or defend effectively and helps with the Captain and Vice-captain choices and Benching decisions.

My favourite was the 'Sleeper' article which I always found useful. One of the most tricky aspects of FPL is catching those players who are 'just about' to make a good run of form so you can get in right from the start before they explode.

I'd like to see this article make a comeback, possibly one per month at least....

I would read Scout Notes whenever they are made available.

        I would prefer the following:
        - lunch time match: by Saturday evening
        - Saturday 3pms: Sunday morning
        - Saturday evening kickoff: Sunday morning
        - Sunday early kickoffs (12-2pm): Sunday evening
        - Sunday evening kickoff (4pm): Monday morning
        - Monday night football: Tuesday morning

Don’t know if that’s workable - but by the time too many more “blocks” of matches have happened over a normal weekend I find it hard to think back to the earlier ones in an article.

Scout Notes is still good content though!

I tend to skip lineup lessons, as I have seen them all come through at the time and don’t feel the article adds much value aside from that. Maybe fold some of the content into another article.

This is excellent stuff, folks - appreciate all the responses. This international break is the first time we've had this season to take stock of everything and ask for your feedback.

Line-Up Lessons definitely needs a short back and sides and rest assured Frisking the Fixtures is something we're planning on continuing going forward (possibly every other week, looking at the feedback - we could look at producing something shorter in between, perhaps).

The Preamble was and probably always will be Mark, I think, and was a piece I absolutely loved reading on a Saturday morning too. He's obviously not able to write this going forward, but will likely be on the Breakfast Club video quite a bit this season. Whoever took the Preamble on would have had a Moyes-ian challenge after Mark's Ferguson era, so we have parked it for now. The Breakfast Club is a nod, I suppose, to the slot the Preamble once had - definitely not a direct replacement, though.

Keep the scout notes long and heavy on detail. Don't dumb down.

Release line up lessons AFTER midweek cup/Europe games and internationals so you have a better idea of who will start.

Bit late to the party, but I still miss the old Knee Jerk articles on Saturday evening as an instant emotional response to the days play, with a more detailed and objective analysis in the Scout Notes the next morning.

The Scout Notes are fantastic, but it’s articles like the Knee Jerk and Prematch Preamble that made this site what it is, as you can relate to them on a personal level.

I like the scour notes as It helps prevent any obvious information I've missed from the game week.

Line up up lessons is a bit long winded. I believe that each team should have the key information with a hyperlink to go into more details should they want.
Personally I scroll straight passed all the info apart from "What we learned" except maybe a handful of teams ie top teams.

Preamble a massive miss imo and was easily my fav article of the week. Needs to return in some shape or form..

It’s good to have some new content post that days games. I always enjoyed the knee jerk article that briefly discussed the hot topic coming out of Saturdays games. It was only a quick reactive article but summarised nicely what a lot of us were thinking following the games.

I personally don’t think there are enough members’ articles.

As many have highlighted, Mark’s presence is a big miss (but also understood) and probably impossible to replicate in terms of personality. So I’d like to see it compensated for in a different way - more high quality member’s articles analysing various aspects of the game (e.g. clean sheet potential, bonus point magnets, other trends from stats) that are topical / relevant rather than forced by a title or format.

The general feedback on most of the current articles is that they are too long, too frequent or too detailed. So why not dial back the time spent on those, limiting them to concise summaries and focus more on making the membership experience better value for money. For me the site has to adapt without so much of Mark’s input and identify where it can excel in other areas. I fear membership will plummet next year based on the first few weeks of this season.

Hope that doesn’t come across too harsh, I’m just trying to be constructive.

          This.

I'd also like to see more retrospectives which challenge our decision making process. Could be around what ppl were saying about fixtures, formation, form, or various stats tables that did or did not materialise in the following gameweeks. An example for me is why the consensus (?) at the start of the season was that we couldn't have faith in Alonso. What have we learnt from the preseason and squad tinkering that we can apply next year?

Agree with many of the views on here re Frisking the Fixtures and Big Numbers. Would prefer both earlier in the week, however.

Scout Notes is fine, but in terms of immediacy, the earlier the better. Spare a thought for members like myself on the other side of the globe who wake-up to results on a Sunday and Monday morning. Possibly supplement this with some sort of "alerts" article which lists out any major events from that day's games (eg. Red cards, significant injuries, yellow card = missing nex match, etc.

The scout squad is a better article than scout picks because it breaks up the template and isn't a product of "too many cooks". Nevertheless, it's a challenge for relevancy given its focus is purely on one game week.

Instead of the Line-up lessons, I'd like to see a members table set up a bit like the Projections table, but with historic data on a week-by-week basis. If we could see various stats (minutes played, CS, goals, FPL points, assists, yellows, etc.), we could visually see the lineups for each side by filtering out - for example - all the defenders for one club.

Hi Geoff. I appreciate that you guys are even asking “Tell us how we can improve”. That is very nice and it will lead to improving this apparent transition period.

I don’t know why Mark has stepped away (health or family or just too busy), but his missing presence has weakened the weekly Scout Picks and the ScoutCast and there is no Preamble to pour forth his musings.

Too many cooks are spoiling the soup...but we appreciate the dedication from all of you.

        So some quick suggestions:

        * Scout Notes: Make the headline very clear and bold as to which games you are covering (saying “Mane knocks in a brace” doesn’t encourage us to read it).

        * LUL is amazing but not many can read it all. I do...there are some gems in there last the running tally of corners, FK, PK. That info can be trimmed and help save time on the Team News section...awesome work but we need som depth chart efficiencies.

Overall I have read every article that has ever been written on this site...so clearly I’m a fan. Thanks for your efforts (Mark, Jonty, Andy, TM, and all).

It’d be good if the line-up lessons articles included the result (ie. if it’s about Chelsea, that they played say Newcastle and won 2-1). I realise I should remember that, but I tend to forget and it’s usedul context.

        Favorite articles of mine:
Frisking the fixtures, The Peamble, Say What, This Much We Know (everything was wrapped up in 1 nice fine article), Knee Jerk

Sad some of these articles have stopped 🙁

Scout Notes is now too detailed, perhaps because they try to include the portions which would otherwise have been in Say What or This Much We Know. But I liked the older version where Scout Notes just focused on the main matters of the games, Say What focused on the quotes from various sources and This Much We Know had all the things wrapped up in one single article.

I'm on these pages for 6-7 years and a member for the past 4 I think, love it even though I don't comment all that much. Obviously, besides the Scout Notes, my favorite articles are the ones for members: Big numbers, Captain sensible, the player comparisons, Monitor. I think you had a medical buletin also, I would like that to come back. I agree with most of the readers about Lineup Lessons, much too long and complex article, I just skim read it. I really miss Mark's Preamble and his general presence on the site, it was my favorite Saturday morning activity. All the best guys, keep up the good work!

As an aside, I like the player comparisons Skonto Rigga does. And although I'm sure it's a pain, these 10-15 minute YouTube vids are good too, discussing the pressers, captaincy etc.

& just to reiterate, it's good the Scoutcast stays at 1hr now. It was dragging too long before, 1 hr 30, 1hr 45. I don't agree with criticism of Joe from some on here for his hosting, I think it's more disciplined and focused.

Scout notes are the most important as it keeps me up to date with what is happening. Make them as long as necessary to cover key takeaways from each game and also any other noteworthy news that may have happened outside of a game or in other competitions, It should be every day so not sure what I am voting for in the poll? Next morning is fine, doesn't have to be published on the day of the game

What else you need depends on what is covered in scout notes, I miss say what but arguably you could cover the key quotes in the scout notes, I read the line-up lessons, as someone said above, its important but boring, but again you could cover it in the scout notes.

I'm not sure if Big Numbers is still a thing but that was the most important article for me, I like that there is more Members content now although the quality of it is mixed, the Alonso article above is dreadful, does not even show the comparison side by side, the Salah / Mane article is much better with tables comparing the 2 players to each other and the field.

I am not a fan of all the video content, same as scoutcast, it could easily just be audio and nothing would be lost.

Same as everyone else I miss the Preamble, this site is still useful but it has lost its personality. The good posters have disappeared to share their best thinking on other forums and Mark has receded into the shadows. I respect his reasons but the detriment to his site is clear.

I like it. Agree not keen on Pogba. One option would be just to get Richarlison now, play Bennet this week and then you're saving a transfer. Alternatively I'd prefer going Maddison instead of Pogba and Arnie instead of Vardy. Arnie will come good. I should say I've just sold him but only cause it was a straight choice of him or Mitrovic for my squad.

The other thing I'd play about with is fitting in Salah alongside Hazard, Mane and Aguero by ditching Vardy for Kamara and having a couple of rotating budget midfielders. Bit more high risk and leaves you unable to get the likes of Richarlison or Maddison but could be gold if all the big guns fire. Very few will have all 4.

Having not made a transfer since Mahrez moved to MNC almost 2 months ago, I’ve finally bottled it and ditched my 4th MNC player. What a bitter disappointment Sane and Mahrez have been. Glad to finally bring my team to life though. Anyone still hanging in there with 4 MNC players?

I’ve played this game a long time, rarely do these opportunities arise - MNC had the most amazing fixtures GW2-7 and Sane and Mahrez looked to be sure to start and do well given lack of WC involvement.

If you transferred in Mahrez while he was a Leicester player in the game, then you could keep him as a 4th MNC player as long as you made no transfers

Depends I think. I have Wally but had a selection headache in defence.

I've done my transfers too on the basis that I've got a decent sub coming in if he's not fit and can switch him to Rich straight after GW5.

It is tricky when you start poorly. I do most years and always feel you have to do something to claw it back. Can often put you in a deeper hole though which is very frustrating. He's an excellent manager though.

Yeah, I think it's easy when you have a bad start to see the teams ahead of you with all the performing players and think that if you don't change it you'll keep falling behind.

Obviously if the players who perform in the first few GWs keep performing that's true, so not making big changes is a bet on the form players changing drastically.

Think this is uncharted territory for Mark though - it's a big gap but there's still loads of time

Could easily bang in 2 or 3 this week against Southampton, or any week for that matter. Definitely a viable strategy going without but many seem to have written him off prematurely imo as if he's not Salah anymore or something. If going without, I'd be prepared for the possibility you'll want him back fairly soon.

I seem to have to login every morning, closely tracking it now.

When I login, and have clicked Remember Me, it keeps me logged in short term. I can close the tab, close the browser, or follow email links and it stays logged in.

There is a 4 hour cookie that logs users out if they haven't clicked Remember Me - it could be that that's failing.

But it doesn't make sense why it's logging users out over a short period of time

The desktop one is really confusing, the mobile one I think we're closer to nailing down.

It's important to know the timing on this: is it always more than 4 hours?

I can't replicate it short term, but long term I can.

Both mobile and desktop for me when opening the site at the start of the day. Doesn't seem to be as regular as it was before the fix, but still happens. This is also after I deleted cookies on both devices after the fix.

Always dependent on the players around him and the service he gets. Will see what the next games bring, but I'm willing to take my chances on these next four fixtures, if he doesn't deliver, it's an easy downgrade

Pogba hasn't done anything outside of penalties 4 games into the season. So four games in and zero attacking returns outside penalties. Of course ManU got 3 penalties in those 4 games, but don't think that is sustainable.

Big price difference. I don't doubt he will get the odd goal and a few assists but he needs to be creating chances and having shots inside the box for me to start considering him. Plus if he misses the next penalty he is off those judging by Mou's expression after his miss.

United are far from essential in any position, IMO. Who to get instead completely depends on the rest of your team...

Not worth it for me personally. Would still wait and observe concerning United. Sanchez too expensive and a lot of the others are rotation risks. Pogba seems decent value though. Seems to get forward a lot but think they are better options just below his price range and then you can pump the money elsewhere

van Aanholt attacking stats still really good for touches in opposition box and minutes per shot.

Creating 1 chance per game as well.

He will come good for sure sooner or later. But I think the fact that Robertson and Mendy (and Alonso who is more expensive) and perhaps even Trippier (if he is more or less nailed) are just so much better for not much extra goes against him. At 5.5 he isn't cheap at all.

True - I do keep staring at the money I've invested in him for comparatively little return so far (especially painful given Holebas has been on my bench for the last 2 in favour of him!!).

But hoping he can return in the next two against poor opposition, otherwise it has to be a move I think.

Well this is the thing as well - want him to return sooner rather than later otherwise looking at shifting him on... but then if Tomkins comes back after GW6 I'll be tempted to keep anyway for that reason... bit of a minefield.

I normally play 3 defenders in my team with 2 cheap ones (who still play every week) on the bench.

However, do you think there is more value is having a 4th defender (Shaw at 5.1) rather than a 5m mid?

Yes. Shaw better than 5m mid. You can get someone like Stephens for 4.5 or even 4.4 if you wait a bit. I personally can't afford Shaw as I am playing with two 4.5 mids and two 4.0 defs (all starters) but he looks really good both attacking wise and defensively as Man U seem to be settling down a bit.

              Holebas - No Way Jose

I like many, have looked at getting in Jose Holebas. I’m on my wildcard so it’s pretty easy to fit him in. However looking more into the fixtures I think he’s a lot less playable than first meets the eye.

Watford are a different beast at home than on the road under Gracia. Yes they have a 100% record this season but they have only had one away game in the league and that was against a terrible Europa ridden Burnley, where Watford still conceded.

Last season Watford drew their first away PL match under Gracia 0-0 with Stoke. From then onwards Watford lost every other away game they had in the league - six. In these games they conceded 14 goals - 2.3 per game. What’s worse is they also failed to score a single away goal in the league under Gracia.

All of Holebas’s attacking returns have come at home and although I understand he may well return in any fixture home or away due to his set piece domination, the fact that Watford dominate so much more at home than away with Burnley being the first fixture under Gracia they have scored in away from home means to me, that the chance of of attacking returns on the road will be few and far between for Holebas. Also considering their inability to keep clean sheets on the road Holebas looks to me as a player only worth owning in a rotation and playing him in home matches only.

This is where the problem lies. Although 75% of Watford’s games this season have been at home - 3. During the next 12 fixtures only 5 are at home. And of those 5 home fixtures, they have Bournemouth and Huddersfield which could be great for returns but then the other three games are against Man Utd, Liverpool and Man City.

On current form Holebas looks a great assets but delving more into the fixtures upcoming, it’s hard to make a case for him, even in the long term. Although Watford have been playing really well and may finish inside the top 10 this season they are still over performing as it stands, as they quite clearly aren’t a top 3 side.

Before this research I had Jose in my WC as part of a three way defender rotation. Now I’m going to have to change that.

Don't agree with much of this.. I made the mistake of having him 2nd sub this GW over AWB and won't make it again. He's very playable in all of his next 10 games IMO.. Some good home games + very good away fixtures.

Arsenal away difficult on paper but we're awful at defending set pieces and that's where Holebas is going to cause danger.

He's my 4th defender, but I'll be playing him as much as possible.

I’m not sure you missing out on his points haul this GW means the above stats aren’t correct, your reply seems somewhat bias. Holebas played at home this GW, where Watford excel. The fear I believe is they now have a lot of away games coming up and some tough home games. Spurs was tough granted, but I don’t expect Holebas or Watford to shine every time a big 6 team rolls into town.

That's not a strong basis for decision making. Try not to look at isolated incidents but the decision making process you adopted. If you feel the decision making process was wrong then alter your approach. If it wasn't then stick with it and it will prevail over the long term.

                  Thanks.

I’m currently set up with the following:

                  Patricio
                  Alonso / Mendy / Shaw
                  Salah / Pedro * / Maddison / Fraser
                  Aguero / Lukaku / Mitrovic

                  Hamer / AWB / Doherty / Billing

                  * Pedro is a Richarlison space saver.

I had Holebas over Shaw originally but for similar prices I now think Shaw is the better pick.

Correct. I know Hazard is everybody’s “essential” pick this last week or two but I’m not altogether convinced and like big Rom as an option. I know there is certainly a risk both not owning the little Belgian and owning the big Belgian but I fancy Lukaku to do well.

Lukaku still a good pick. I’d be terrified of Hazard over the next two fixtures. I think he’ll get double digits in both.

I'd get him on a wc. MUN/ars aren't really bad fixtures when relying on set pieces, and the rest up to gw13 (LIV) are ok.
He's top 4 for crosses, top for corners, joint top chances created. Doubt very much that Watford will keep up this not-losing form but defending isn't where his points are mostly coming from. 4 games is too small a sample to conclude on home vs away form.

Yes he’s on set pieces which helps him deliver against any team but if his own team don’t score on the road (no goal scored away under Gracia last season) then it doesn’t matter if he’s the man taking the set pieces or now when it comes to away games. Especially as they seem to virtually always concede goals away too.

I’m not suggesting he isn’t a great FPL asset considering his set pieces but if Watford don’t score away from home and don’t keep clean sheets away from home, how many points can we expect from Holebas away from home regardless of the opposition?

Ok, but they've already already undermined that away loss + failing to score rationale with a 1-3 away win.

Well firstly they have still kept up with the tradition of no clean sheets.

I think Watford are in a purple patch and got a great result away from home but it was against Burnley who are in relegation form at the moment after their Europe League hangover.

I by no means think Watford won’t score away from home all season but I do think their goal returns away from Vicarage Road will be very minimal and likely up there with the bottom 4 or 5 teams for goals scored away from home.

Possibly but they're playing ful, ars, wol, new, sou away.
ars, new, ful are in top 5 shots conceded.
All 5 are in top 10 for set pieces conceded (same when filtered for home games)

That’s a good stat for Holebas. Hopefully he can return but with a low chance of clean sheets you are banking on him delivering a set piece assist every game to play him other wise you are likely looking at a blank. It’s quite a lot to ask even for a set piece merchant to deliver so many assist moving forward, as his current rate can’t be sustainable.

Hopefully for his owners Watford can get the odd clean sheet away from home which in my opinion is the only way I could justify playing him in home games.

Maybe but still think he's currently great value at 4.8m. To be clear I don't have him so not talking my book.

He certainly could prove me wrong. And if he does, as you say he would be great value at 4.8m.

I was considering him in for TAA but Walcott/Mkhi situation has overridden that. I generally agree with you on clean sheets being first focus for defenders, but this kind of set piece/corner potential and return for a rotatable 4.8m def is quite rare.

Great Post. Really like it when someone post some thought out analysis. I think everyone knows that both Holebas and Watford are overachieving (and that is an understatement). Holebas might still be good value with set piece duties as you say but those home fixtures against the top three teams really do dent his upcoming potential. One of those where imo you keep if you have but don't get in if you don't.

                            Thanks.

Yes I agree and if I owned him I probably wouldn’t be in a rush to dump him. But many are currently on a wildcard and are bringing him in, myself included until now. So it seems a good time to look into how viable his future points potential may be before setting up with him as a planned option.

If the fixtures were better, more home games and games against lesser opposition then as you say his set piece duties alone would make him great value.

Those six away games under Gracia last season were against Man United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal, Stoke and West Ham. Their home games were far more favorable. Surely that accounts for Watford's apparent difference home and away?

Just had a look at the stats. We'll over his delta for assists. 4.8 for rotation with another def definitely. That may be too much cash tho with a benching headache as seen by some this last GW. Fixtures not good enough for stand alone plus being burnt last season with cards and injuries, No way Jose for me.

Not including him in your wc is fair play. Theres loads of different options in defence to consider. "those expensive ones" with form, and those cheap ones with good fixtures coming. I would'nt pick Holebas to make him a steadfast in my 11. He would have to be rotated with another cheap def.

I do however think your putting to much emphasis on "last season". The first half of this season should tell us a lot more about how Watford will look under Gracia, than last season did.

The stats from the other clubs he's managed inst to encouraging though. Seems to allways average less than 1 goal scored and between 1-2 conceded each game away. His stats with Kazan, Malaga and Osasuna atleast suggests this.

youre basing most of this on Watford performing the same as last year....need to consider that watford under a new manager seem and will probably be a different entity, they are having a good season. if teams and players performed the same every season this game would be easy....i am keeping holebas

                          Nice post.

It's worth noting, however, that since most own Wan-Bissaka as well, you could possibly have a rotation with the two of them. If you have both, the next ten fixtures could look like this:

                          5 hud 6 NEW 7 bou 8 BOU/WOL 9 wol 10 HUD 11 new 12 sou 13 LIV/mun 14 BUR 15 bha

That means playing W-B in gameweeks 5-7, choosing one of the two in gw 8, Holebas 9-12, cursing them both gw 13 and then back to W-B gameweek 14 and 15.

To analyse based on last season's numbers gives a fawlty result, imo.

Gracia came in mid-season and had to work with what he got, and trying to implement his system little by little. So, naturally, one would expect better results this year, when he had a whole pre-season period to prepare the players.

That said, they are clearly over-achieving, at least in attacking returns. But not by much. Defensively they are doing as expected.

I am on WC myself, and has Holebas in, but just for the price rise. Will swap to Shaw myself.

This is classic over thinking. Bottom line is Holebas a returned attacking points in three out of four games. The game where he didn't was away, but you could also argue that Burnely are OK at defending set pieces. Equally, he has just returned two assists against Spurs, one of the best, most dominating teams in the league (but perhaps not great on set pieces).Watford are good defensively - not great but above average - so he will get some clean sheet points two. And he is cheap as chips. Don't over think it.

I don't think OP is overthinking anything- he is just thinking.

'Bottom line is Holebas a returned attacking points in three out of four games'

'And he is cheap as chips'

'so he will get some clean sheet points'

^^ You on the other hand appear to be underthinking the situation.

Good smurfin'. I can't remember if it was last season or the season before I had Holebas. I think he got me a couple of assists, everybody here seemed to dive on and from that moment, I think he then solely picked up 5 cards and was suspended. Total card magnet and although Watford have looked good, previous seasons shows them to be a bit erratic, then the Pozzo's get all fidgety and fire the coach.

Jose Lloyd Cholevas is gold. Any team can concede as we have seen so far with City, Spurs e.t.c but what happens when they concede? You want someone who can revive those points from somewhere, you don't care how and to me setpiece duty makes him gold and that value is something I am glad about... Had him since 0.2% ownership and all I can say to you is kindly ignore him as I see that is what you want and watch others rack up some points from him.

Was a bit unhappy with my team. I have been tempted to milk my defence and keeper, to upgrade mkhtaryan to Hazard. But this would mean using wc. But i realised mkhtaryan can stay for now, and be used in a transfer to get Richarlison.

Wan Bissaka away to Huddersfield, or Mitrovic away to City.

                            Neves to Billing
                            Wilson to Mitro

My suggestions, but your way could work (dont bench Wilson though)

Ok. I feel like a rotation between Ings, Wilson, and Neves might work?

I'll look to Billing and Mitro. I feel Wilson and Mitro are overachieving atm, so hard to decide between them.

Do you reckon it is worth doing now before the international break?

Wilson on the bench in a home game?

Line-up was semi irrelevant, more just the squad. But see above, I'll probably bench Neves and play 3-4-3.

Ings, just for value and the only route through Southamptons attack.

Leno hasn't conceded a goal in the PL, surely he should be the starting keeper for Arsenal?

                          Aguero-Tosun-Zaha

I would only make like 5-6 chances so should i make WC or not?

I have quite a similar team and just hope Tosun scores and Zaha is back. Then it is just looking at midfield for Mhki and Walcott replacements.... But my hope might not come true. I am considering changing Zaha, Walcott, Robbo/Tomkins to Mitro/ Ings, Fraser/Maddison/ Pedro and maybe Alonso if I take all the cheapest above. Will see how we get through international break though.

Ok guys so my midfield looks like this:

Lucas Moura - Mane - Hazard - Bilva with Seri as a sub.
Q : Is there a better combo than Lucas Moura and Bilva? My only concerns in the mid are these two.

                          Thanks !
