There has been plenty of Fantasy Premier League interest surrounding Marco Silva’s new-look Everton side in 2018/19, but is it justified?

Richarlison (£6.7m) and Theo Walcott (£6.8m) have at different times this season been at the centre of the debate and are currently the Toffees’ two most-owned outfielders, so we’re assessing the pros and cons of holding onto either player in the coming weeks.

We’re also taking this opportunity to analyse what impact their new manager has had at Goodison Park since his appointment.

Walcott’s injury-enforced exit after 57 minutes of Everton’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at the weekend capped off a frustrating day for the Toffees and the circa one million FPL managers who owned the former Arsenal winger.

Further updates are awaited on the extent of Walcott’s rib problem and, although he currently is the most-sold midfielder of this round, a large chunk of his owners are sitting on the mid-priced option for now with a plum home fixture against West Ham United to come in Gameweek 5.

While Richarlison has had his deserters since his dismissal in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth a fortnight ago, the Brazilian has – like Walcott – been retained by just under 15% of FPL managers.

That the mass exodus for either player hasn’t happened on a much wider scale is perhaps explained by two factors: Everton’s forthcoming fixtures and Silva’s reputation for delivering attacking football.

A cursory look at the Season Ticker long-term doesn’t cast the Toffees in a favourable light, given that they have trips to Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City to come between now and mid-December.

Filtering by home fixtures, however, gives cause for optimism. Everton top our Season Ticker for matches on home soil between now and Gameweek 16, with the Hammers, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, Cardiff City, Newcastle United and Watford all to visit Merseyside during that period.

Even the trips to Stamford Bridge and the Emirates aren’t too daunting from an offensive perspective, given that Chelsea and especially Arsenal have looked a little suspect in defence this season.

Silva’s renown for favouring a more aesthetically pleasing brand of football is something we will explore here, looking at the early impact the former Watford manager has had on Everton’s more attack-minded players from a Fantasy perspective – as well as any notable difference in the performances of his backline.

Current plan is to do Mkhi -> Fraser this week

Would you also do Bilva -> Dilva (-4)?

    1. That Was Easy!

      7 years, 3 months ago

For Bilva, I think a hit is smart. Any other player and I'd probably discourage, but this way you're taking care of 1 rotation risks (not that Dilva doesn't come with a small amount of risk).

I'm thinking Mkhi > Fraser as well, tempted by Mane > Haz (-4) but can't really come around to it.

What do you think of Mkhi > Rambo?

Approximately how stupid would it be to bench Mitro (mci) for Doherty (BUR)

Bearing in mind most of Burnley's creative players are cracked and they can't defend

I have double ManC def and will start Mitrovic.

Way I see it - if City ruins my double CS again, at least Mitro should be involved. Would hate City to win 12-1 with Mitro the scorer on my bench.

S/L could be gold, but we can afford to wait and see on both Laca and Vardy. Laca is only an option if he's nailed and we'll know that soon, and Vardy needs to get back and scoring.

Still a rotation risk even if he is fit. CL game in midweek too. Ederson, Mendy, Fernandinho, David Silva and Aguero look pretty safe but apart from them it's hard to say that any City player will definitely start.

Well Sterling is definitely much more explosive than David Silva so it might be worth the risk if you're happy with the rest of your team. Personally I wouldn't want to own an 11m rotation risk.

  24. Form over Fixtures?
    Shawcus
    • 10 Years
    7 years, 3 months ago

Haven’t commented much on here lately but having seen people talking about fixtures and teams having a run of great matches, I thought I would add my thoughts.

Firstly I decided in the summer that the way I would play the game this season is form/good players over fixtures. Obviously at the start of the season there is only pre season form so I thought I would stack my squad with good players regardless of fixtures. The reasons why are as follows:

    1. I have been watching the premier league/old first division since 1985. In my opinion this is the most open I have ever seen the league. What I mean by this is that any team in the top flight can beat any other team on any given day, unlike in Spain or Germany etc. Recent examples would be Watford v spurs, Brighton v msn Utd and even wolves v city (didn’t win but not the result everyone thought would occur)
Therefore good fixture runs aren’t always good fixture runs.

    2. I’ve read a lot of people stating that Liverpool’s fixtures are turning so let’s get rid, plus rotation because of CL games. I would suggest that this would be the time to load up on pool players because a) the form of this team is the best in the league and b) Would Klopp rotate players in big matches, no. Surely if Liverpool has a run of so called great fixtures there would be a far greater chance of him resting Salah/Mané etc in these easier league games and save them for the CL. He won’t be resting them against city/Chelsea or spurs.

Finally looking at my own start. This is the 6th season I’ve played this frustrating game and in the previous 5 I have always looked at fixtures and had a slow start. This year I have literally not looked at any fixtures and just put all the best players in and transferred in form players over the first 4 weeks. Result: best start ever at approx 16K.

TLDR: sorry for the long post guys but in conclusion, load up on form teams and don’t worry about fixtures, Salah has more chance of playing 90 minutes v spurs than he is v Southampton therefore more chance of scoring more points v spurs!!

Yes very good post. I would concur to a certain extent with regards to ignoring the fixtures and just pick good players that are good value. A lot simpler and you just can't trust the fixtures as literally anything can happen. As an example if you look at when poorer teams play each other there are usually quite a few goals as both teams go for it more

      1. Not again Shirley
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

... whereas against the better teams they batten up the hatches so defenders to a certain extent more likely to concede against worse teams. This is one reason I don't bother with defender and goal keeper rotation as too unpredictable

        1. Shawcus
          • 10 Years
          7 years, 3 months ago

Totally agree with you mate regarding rotation goalkeepers/defenders etc. Results in general in the Premier league are far too unpredictable now, hence form over fixtures!!

          1. Shawcus
            • 10 Years
            7 years, 3 months ago

I can actually see the spurs Liverpool game being 3-3 or high scoring at least. Would rather see two exceptional teams going at it than a game like the Newcastle v Chelsea which was rubbish!

    3. No Luck
      • 14 Years
      7 years, 3 months ago

This is my experience too. Now I only look at fixtures for cheap defenders. Attacking players and premium defenders and goalies aren't really affected by fixtures that much.

      1. Shawcus
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

Exactly my point. I try and fill my squad with players from the top 6 clubs and play them in so called easy fixtures but more importantly the harder fixtures too. This league is far too unpredictable and by just picking form players, you are taking the risk of a freak result out of the equation.

It is how you play the fixtures that is important.. you have gambles and you have shrewd punts.. gamble with the low value picks with fixtures and the high value picks with form..

    7. Runaway
      • 13 Years
      7 years, 3 months ago

Well, I agree with most of it but every situation has its own merits. As a firm believer of form over fixture, it still makes sense to ditch one of Salah or Mane for Hazard because he is also in form and has the fixture as well. So why would not I spread it over two in-form teams instead of one. Having said that, if I had only one LIV attacker, I would absolutely keep. I will also keep Robertson as he is capable of delivering attacking points in any game.

      100% agree with this post.

the only time really you should worry about fixtures is when a team in a little out of form and then have to play against a top 6 or a in form side....but its a moot point as we wouldnt be looking at the out of form teams players!

      Good post.

Last season I focussed on fixtures (I’m usually always a form over fixtures man nornally) and had a horror season.

Form trumps fixtures easily. The two together are great through.

I usually go for players who have both, form and fixtures, but out of the two I agree that form is more important.

Hazard has both. Liverpool only have the form, not the fixtures. So there's a case for people to want to bring him in.

Now yes, Liverpool are better than Spurs and Chelsea and it wouldn't shock us if they beat both teams, but in away games, would it really shock you if they lost either? They do have PSG and Napoli to worry about in the midst of all this as well.

Regarding rotation, you're right, they won't be rotated vs Spurs and Chelsea. But disagree about the 90 minutes. It will depend on the outcome of the game of course, but unless they're losing at 70', there's a good chance Salah or more likely Mane is subbed off to be rested for the CL game that follows. So minutes management is quite likely.

You did choose to pick crap players and bench good ones in GW1 however 😆

I see this debate every year. Form is #1 indicator of who you should get. It is literally who is scoring points at that moment in time.
What I would say about fixtures (and it is quite obvious) if you have a choice between two players of similar form- pick the one with the better fixtures.

I agree with you in some aspects. But, it is not 100% Form>Fixtures.

We will choose players with good fixtures and good underlying stats even if they have no good form yet. We will not choose Kante for good Chelsea fixtures.

The point is that although players with good forms still have chance to score in those period, their likelihood of explosive scores like 25 points or 20 points is much diminished.

Salah scored against City last season but he could not scored 4 goals against City just like he did against Watford. Aguero may score 12 points against Man U, but his likelihood of scoring 5 goals against them just like he did against New Castle is much lower.

You mentioned that anything could happen in EPL. You pointed out the games like, Briton 3- Man U 2, Watford 2-Spurs 1, City 1 Wolves 1. But if you carefully check the stats, these were not 100% surprises. Wolves showed good defensive stats before they met City, Watford was a good team with 100% win rate before they met Spurs, Man U is Man U and Mourinho in his 3rd season could lose any team in the world.

You are right, we should not prefer Maddison > Salah or Kante > Salah or Morgan> Robertson. But if we could effectively find the good players with good underlying stats and fixtures against teams who will like to concede big, then you will have a big chance to get many points. Eg- Mitrovis Vs Burnley (16 points), Mane vs Westham (16 points) , etc.

If they scored lets say 15 points more in the same period, even with 8 points hit, you made the right move.

This question seems to be a hot topic multiple times each year, and I dont think were getting much wiser. Its not "form over fixtures" or "fixtures over form", its both.

I think we should look past the colour of the fixtures and let other factors influence our moves. Using bookies odds, one can look at "team total goal scored" over/under, cleansheet odds, and anytime goalscorer odds.

Although odds dont predict whats going to happen, it probably gives us the best indication of whats "most likely to happen". If fixturechanges ifluence both team totals and anytime goalscorer odds of a player your owning, you might want to switch even though he has great form and stats. If it does'nt, you might want to keep, even though the fixtures does'nt look "sexy".

Using Liverpoool: Looking ahead one can easily find that clean sheet odds takes a nosedive when playing spurs away (25-30%), pretty good against soton (50+%), and again bad v cfc (30-35%). Only one cs "looks likely". for comparison, Liverpools CS-odds fluctuated between 40-60% likelyhood in the first 4 fixtures

As for team goals scored, the over/under are almost even at 1.5 v Spurs, 2.5 v Southampton and 1.5 v cfc. This suggests approximately 5 goals over those three fixtures. Thats a decline in goals compared to what they've scored sofar (2.25 goals pr game). This might suggest that the players most involved in pool's goals will have a regression. Mane might be the one who sees his scoring tail off the most, as he's been the one "overachieving". Stats suggests that Salah and Firmino should only see a "small decline".

It's okay for people to be worried about Liverpools fixtures, and consider making moves. Sound logic suggests that they wont be able to get as many points as the yhave been getting. This doesnt mean that they wont score big, it just suggests that its less likely than when they are playing other teams. I think were all to fond of looking at last season or past games, and using this to back up our beliefs. Just because Liverpool scored a lot in some of the games against top sides last season, does'nt necisseraliy mean they will this season. Just because Salah scored against almost all the top sides last season, doesnt mean he will this season.

I decided to just play the fixtures this year.
I normally start badly but am currently in the top 5k !
Last week I swapped Salah for Hazard and Alonso because of fixtures.
TLDR: there are lots of different ways to play FPL, that’s why we love it

Well that argument doesn't make sense in general. I shipped Lucas and Firmino in gw3 for example since both were not playing well. 3 goals and 2 assists in the 2 games after that combined. So as a side note, form over fixtures isn't always the right way to judge it. Another example is King who was on a great pre season form and a poor fpl asset so far

    Hennessey - Hamer
    Alonso - Mendy - ___ - AWB - Bennett
    Hazard - Mane - Pedro - ___ - Billing
    Aguero - Lukaku - Jimenez

    For the missing spots:

    A) Robertson & Fraser
    or
    B) Shaw & Maddison
