Watford have been the surprise package in the Premier League this season, level on points with table-topping Liverpool and causing Fantasy managers to investigate their assets.

The Hornets have won all of their matches so far and have held onto their 100% record longer than defending champions Manchester City.

Their most recent result was the most impressive of the lot, a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Vicarage Road in Gameweek 4.

Lose or even draw with Spurs and very few would have batted an eyelid. But emerging from that match as come-from-behind winners put Watford decisively in the spotlight.

Fantasy managers the world over have been asking whether Javi Gracia’s in-form side can sustain their impressive displays.

It’s a vitally important question as many consider their Wildcard squads. Overlook the Hornets in the event that they go on to do great things this season and you could be left behind. Alternatively, overinvest when they are but a flash in the pan and the same could happen.

We’ve gone over the data for the first four matches of the season to see just how serious we should take the Hornets’ buzz.

Given how well defenders have started, is it too crazy to go:
    Alonso, Mendy, Wan-Bissaka, Bennett, Peltier?

Alonso and Mendy play every week with one of AWB/Bennett, who rotate very nicely for a while (hud, NEW, SOT, WOL, WAT, bha)

Crazy that you don't have a Liverpool defender 🙂

They have looked the best defensively, but their games coming up are hard and this would allow me an extra big hitter

Also can we guarentee that Moreno, Lovren and Clyne won't start getting some games with their UCL games coming up?

Doing a fixture breakdown, I think Robertson is fairly safe to start the next 8 games.

Robertson should obviously start every important game, so the only worry would be that fatigue from the PSG or Napoli games would force rotation in the following game. The Southampton game comes before the league cup fixture against Chelsea, and I find it unlikely that a player like Robertson would get rested 2 games in a row. The alternative of course is to rest him against Southampton and play him in league cup, but that would force Robertson to play 4 tough fixtures in a row. It's more sensible to play him 3 games in a row on either sides of a rest.

This is the most reasonable fixture breakdown for Robertson for me:

          Tottenham - Play
          PSG - Play
          Southampton - Play
          Chelsea (EFL) - Rest
          Chelsea - Play
Napoli - Play (Potentially rest with win against PSG)
          City - Play
          - - International break - -
          Huddersfield - Play
          Red Star - Rest
          Cardiff - Play
          Leage cup(?) - Rest
          Arsenal - Play
Red Star (A) - Rest (Potentially play depending on how strong they look)
          Fulham - Play
          - - International break - -

I would be worried about rotation after the second international break, but at that point you can see how good Moreno is looking.

It's the early rounds in the least important tournament. Look at the line ups between Liverpool and Tottenham a few years ago: https://www.liverpoolfc.com/match/2016-17/first-team/liverpool-v-tottenham-live-match-day-blog

    WC team at present, thoughts?

    Patricio
    Alonso, Mendy, Shaw, Monreal
    Hazard, Dilva, Mane
    Ings, Vardy, Aguero

You're missing a keeper. Monreal is a stretch for me considering how useless Arsenal are still looking at the back. I'd personally get another defender. Doherty would be my choice and allow an upgrade of Neves.

Well Hamer is my sub keeper forgot to mention him, Ill be playing Patricio every week anyway.

Just think Monreal might be worth a punt, but it would make sense to downgrade and then upgrade Neves to Richarlison

my personal thought is, at different points of the season, different players make a team look strong. now I have this feeling for shaw and I don't know why.
like sanchez 2-3 seasons ago when he used to start firing with premium price
it's maybe lacazette after next gw

If Utd can build on bur and not go to wat and do another bri then there's hope. Steady the ship and Shaw could be the bargain of the season.

    Patricio Hamer

Is it a good plan to have a widespread of teams in the squad
does having x2 palace x2 wolves x2 Fulham create weaknesses??

Is Hamer 1st choice? That I see as a weakness. For Boly I'd much prefer Doherty and also save 0.1 or Bennet and save 0.5. I would then upgrade McArthur to Fraser.

    B. Wilson - Billing - Trippier

you think he was just rested last week... who gets dropped to the bench in your opinion if hes to start?

        Ozil Ramsey Aubamayang
        Lacazette

The stats for Mkhi are fat. Ozil must go, if this is also part of rotation I think at 7.2 that's not bad in a solid attacking team with decent fixtures.

Can Watford's form and Fantasy appeal last much longer?

The appeal is Pereyra & Holebas, decent ownership, Troy is just 5%. Pereyra bl ows hot & cold so iffy, Holebas needs Deeney & co to convert. Maybe for a while, 40pts then make sure they don't get into EL. 😆

Ladies and gentleman, just need a piece of advice. My team is as follows:

    Hennessey, Hamer
    Robertson, Mendy, Luiz, Bissaka, Peltier
    Salah, Mane, Bilva, Mkhi, Gunnarson
    Auba, Zaha, King

Got 2 free transfers. What the heck should I do?

A - Keep it and try to solve it with the 2 FT.
B - Use the wildcard to save the team.

Bilva, Mkhi & Auba to Dilva, Fraser & Kun perhaps. Does that leave enough itb to do Luiz to Alonso? Could be considered as sideways moves but I think they should be rewarding.

Can we talk about Vardy? Contemplating getting him in this week (mkhi&Zaha > Gray&Vardy for -4 if Zaha is ruled out and Mkhi looks unlikely to start). However I've started thinking about his price: £8.9m. This is considerably more than any other non-top-6 forward and I'm wondering if he's worth it. Is he actually a better pick than the likes of Arnie, Zaha or the in-form men Mitro and Wilson? He did do well last season racking up 183 points and 20 goals (both more than similarly priced Firmino), plays every game possible, and with Maddison's delivery he could do well again. Is there a worry he won't start this first game back from suspension or be out of form? Or will he be chomping at the bit to get in the goals?

    1. Netley Lucas
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 7 months ago

He'll start for sure but you raise an interesting point. With so many 7 and below performing well, is he a luxury? I think he is. Ifhe ticks along then surely Maddy will benefit for so much less?

    2. DivocksHighSocks
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 7 months ago

I think he's a good pick if you're keeping him for the long haul. I think there is better value if you can jump on the form 6-7 strikers but it's knowing which ones to go with is the tricky bit.

      1. FPLShaqiri
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 7 months ago

Good reply. Getting someone in 'for the long haul' is an interesting point in itself. Over 3-4 games there will usually be at least 1 cheaper striker that will outperform Vardy. Over 10-12 games? Vardy probably comes out on top. There's also the added benefit of avoiding hokey-cokeying between £6-£7 strikers and going Vardy just for the transfers you'd save (and can use elsewhere).

The other side of the argument is that *no one* is ever for the the long haul. If Vardy blanks for 3 games, and his price is dropping then I'm not the manager that's going have the patience to hold him. Then I'll inevitably miss a haul.

I think in this situation I'm edging towards Vardy. I have the wildcard in my back pocket (maybe use for 2nd IB pre GW9) so I'm relying on him to start firing quickly. Wilson will be my choice if I keep Mkhi. I think Mitro is clearly a better player than Wilson but it feels wrong to bring him in for Man City.

Cook > Robbo and that midfield and frontline gonna give you a benching headache every week. Lose Wilson as already have Fraser as B'mouth attack and lose Schurrle as have Mitro as Fulham attack. Could do with Leicester attack with their great fixture run next 2 months. Wilson > Ings/Jimenez and Schurrle > Maddison.

Regularly hear something along the lines of “don’t take a hit for a 0.1 increase in your team value”... and I completely agree.

But then, I think we’d all sacrifice 4 points in exchange for an extra £1m team value. So this got me thinking... where’s the tipping point?

What are your views on the exchange rate between points and team value?

As long as I'm not getting priced out, I wont do early transfers, even if it means missing a triple rise. Friday night or Saturday morning is when I prefer to make any move because of full information and updates.

This. Try to remember that a -4 is giving other teams already with those players, an extra 4 points.
