Manchester City are set to be at the heart of the latest captaincy debate this week, but it shall remain a far from simple discussion.

You can now vote in the Gameweek 5 captain poll and can watch the video below or on our YouTube channel.

The fact big hitters Tottenham and Liverpool are set to do battle at Wembley Stadium in the Saturday lunch-time kick-off should curtail interest in their best players.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) are typically important figures in the captaincy conversation but may suffer from facing each other’s clubs this weekend.

That brings us back to Man City and their appealing home fixture against Fulham, a side that has averaged 2.25 goals conceded per match so far in 2018/19.

Conversely, the defending champions have found the net eight times in their first two home matches.

However, the start of the Champions League on the following Wednesday could potentially complicate the team selection for Pep Guardiola.

Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) will likely be the standout candidate from the poll but at this point we don’t have any guarantees that he will definitely start against Fulham – although he tends to be favoured at home.

David Silva (£8.5m) may receive some attention as the more reliable starter with Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) still out for some time.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) should also be considered by some as he looks undroppable on current form.

Make sure you let us know who you’re going to hand the armband to by using our poll below, or on the sidebar.

    Thoughts on my WC team:

    Patricio (Hamer)
    Wan-Bissaka Mendy Alonso (Bennet Bednarek)
    Dilva Hazard Fraser Maddison (Hojberg)
    Lukaku Aguero Lacca

I believe that bench is too weak. None of the players on your bench will see much game time, let alone score points...

Can't afford that with the fixture congestion coming up.

Agree with you, I have 0 in the bank. But Bennet is still a starter as well as Hojberg. Cant see anyone being dropped apart from Lacca

For me Lacs, Lukaku, Madison and Fraser together represents to much risk re. lack of attacking football and being a donkey (Luk), not fixture proof (Mad/Fraser) and rotstion/position/team for questions (Luc). I like many of these individually but there is an enormous Liverpool shaped hole in your team that you are attempting to overcome with these choices. Unwise imo

Lukaku statistically showed big improvement and his two goals were no surprise. I just think Mourinho will come back with great results they played very attacking last matches. Maddison is a key player, I really like him. With Fraser I am not sure on the long run. I am more worried about Lacca, but was thinking to switch to Vardy.
Liverpool is a big issue in my head now, I know they can win matches with big teams doesnt matter away or home, but their calendar looks horrible, and with Shaqiri scoring for Switzerland possible Mane or Salah will be benched soon

You really shouldn't be avoiding players like Salah or mane because they might gf etc benched soon. They score more in one game than most players do in two, and are more than capable of returning 5-15 points from the bench

Good team imho, but lack of Liverpool a big concern. I would only reconsider the Lacca pick maybe, that is a lot of funds invested in forwards.

Good on you for being different and bold.

You know the risks/reward payoff having no Liv.

My one advice: Downgrade one of the strikers and improve the 3rd mid or 4th def. There is so much value in mid prices strikers right now - pick any of Mitro, Wilson.

It's decent. Fraser doesn't convince me but he's a good option for his price. Not sure Silva will be a hitter as City have many attackers front and back to share the spoils. Maybe get Richarlison in if he shows better form than Silva and upgrade Fraser.

Don't think he would threaten Fraser's game time as much as he would threaten the other flank. Could be wrong here though but either way, he has an unknown return date so that probably means not any time soon!

Cheers. I found this guy saying he has returned to training (I assumed that, it's directly said though) and could start the Carabao game against Blackburn 24th September. Don't know about his credibility. https://afcbchimes.blogspot.com/2018/09/its-great-to-see-junior-stanislas-is.html

Maybe not game time, but he will try to occupy his favoured position on the left. This will mean that Fraser could end up playing RM or even RWB, where he doesn’t play so well. I’m pretty sure Stanislas has recovered now, just training

Likely he will be back this game or next.

Fraser and Stanislas tend to play on opposite sides to each other, so Brooks looked the more in danger one. However, they tend to be quite fluid in where they play iirc, think Stan used to get games on both sides and up front, but I might be wrong.

I'd expect Stan at RM and Fraser at LM.

That's assuming they revert to a 4-4-2. If they decide to keep using a 3-4-3, I guess there's a risk that Fraser will be pushed deeper so Stan can enter that front 3.

    Walcott injury latest:

The winger is hoping to be passed fit to face West Ham next Sunday.

The Everton man was forced off early in the second-half against Huddersfield with a rib injury in the Blues’ last game before the international break.

Everton are keeping their fingers crossed the 29-year-old will have recovered in time to face the Hammers at Goodison with Marco Silva having to deal with key attacking absentees.

Richarlison remains suspended for the game next weekend while Bernard missed the draw with Huddersfield through injury although Silva is hopeful of being able to include him in the squad.

Walcott, it is understood, is recovering well and there are no complications with the injury but the decision on whether he is passed fit to play against West Ham will hinge on how well he can cope with any remaining pain in his rib.

    Ederson (Patricio)
    Mendy. Robbo. AWB (Mee. Tomkins)
    Salah. Mane. Walcott. Fraser (Cairney)
    Aguero. Arnie. Zaha

    0.1 ITB. 2 FT

    2. Zaha + Robbo = Wilson + Alonso?

Aguero equally owned now, should be capped by more people and has a way better fixture. Too risky I would say.

Although Salah could be an amazing differential captain for GW6 with the amount of people selling him specially in MLs.

But that is being viewed in the light of previous Chelsea mismanagement and a team in flux.
You get Hazard and hope he gets points the same as any player.
The Hazard is a troll thing is just a fantasy myth created and because it is repeated so often it has become gospel.
There is good chance by the end of the season that Hazard could be more owned then Salah.

Average of 167 points over the last 3 seasons.
Has some hauls in each season, that means he also has a lot of blanks. Hence the troll staple. He hauls, people get him, he blanks for 2-3 weeks.

He has had an amazing start to the season, if he keeps it up, he is on for his best PL season ever. But I do understand the doubts.

I have a question is a decent overall squad of 13 players (without Salah) a good idea?
You then rotate all these players (based on form/fixtures) and suffer occasional points on the bench.
Does the scout-cast think that is a viable strategy where a manager trusts thier own judgement on who to start and who to bench?
A bench headache should be a good problem rather then a bad one?

How come the fact that Mane has a 40% ownership now and is as capable as Salah to destroy rank if not owned is neglected by most here? Same thing for Aguero with 50% ownership. Yet still only Salah is dubbed as the only "essential rank destroyer" even though he is not proving to be good value for money. Now we also know he is probably 100% off penalties after missing 2 with Egypt in the same game.

Stats are not everything. Mane wins the eye test. He has confidence. Plus this is not what I asked. What I asked is why aren't Mane and Aguero feared enough when they have form and ownership. Its lot like the situation of Hazard for example where he can haul but won't affect rank much if not owned.

A complete no show from a 'nailed on' player resulting in a off the bench haul.

Unlucky events are mainly early injuries, losing assists from shanks or missed pens, OGs and someone touching a ball to take away a goal/assist.

The Ox/Gibbs mistaken identity, McCauley hair assist and Lukaku phantom assist when at Everton are classic luck/unlucky events

-Ederson assist (or any keeper attacking returns) must be classed as luck.
      - Missed penalties are unlucky imo, as most pen takers score most of the time
      - 55-59 minute sub offs unlucky in generel - especially for defenders when not having conceded.
      - Getting points off the Bench CAN be lucky depending on tbe circumstances - as can Getting a huge VC score when cap not playing (can be good management as well).
      - Injuries generally unlucky as well.

Plenty of penalties are saved. Having one decent penalty saved might be bad luck or goalkeeper skill, but if it happens repeatedly then it's more a lack of skill by the penalty taker.

Ederson's assist was part of Ederson's skill and City's strategy and may well be repeated. An Ederson goal would probably be luck though.

        1. Licious Lizard
          • 13 Years

Usually the penalty takers have a far higher chance of scoring on a given penalty than not.
84 or 85 assists has been given to goal keepers in 25 years (less than 3,5 per season), so it’s not something you’d expect to happen regularly. Yes, Ederson might get a couple of assists over the next few years - and MAY have a higher chance than other GK’s - but of course it is lucky to get one.

In terms of penalties 1750 out of 2296 has gone in; more than 76%, which suggests that a regular penalty taker is somewhat unlucky if missing a pen (and this is without scoring or getting an assist on the rebound).

Do you really disagree and what fairly common events do you then find lucky/unlucky?

The other things you mentioned (55-59 minute substitutions, injuries, getting points off the bench) involve more luck in my opinion.

Some penalty takers are better than others and will convert them more than 76% of the time; some goalkeepers are also better than others and will save more than 24% of them. It might be a bit unlucky if the goalkeeper guesses correctly which way to go and saves a reasonably good penalty, but not if the penalty is a weak one or misses the target.

The number of goals scored in open play also depend on luck and random distribution as well as skill. A player may average five shots and one goal per match, but sometimes he might have ten shots and not score, and other times he might have only three shots but score a hat-trick.

Even deflections may not always be unlucky - sometimes they can be considered as bad play by the defender.

Ederson assist was a genuine assist. Can't be taking those points off anyone anymore than you could a last minute equaliser goal from a corner for a keeper.

I’m not trying to take the points off anyone...?
In a discussion about lucky events in FPL, I will still say that a GK assist is lucky for an owner. Usually we switch keepers a couple times during a season and I don’t think it’s unfair to say that having a keeper during that specific game, where he gets an assist, is a lucky event in FPL.

      A differential working
Getting a haul for a trip captain.
Having points on the bench and they come on
This game is like poker. For sure people who study it will have an edge but any poker player will tell you, getting continuous bad hands will hurt you.

Bernardo Silva, Pedro and Mkhitaryan have all been rotated already this season, and they have also all scored points. Is it worth getting these players that play for top6 clubs that are cheap compared to their team-mates, yet rotation risks? Should we instead opt for midpriced players who are nailed to start every game, Maddison for example?

Follow-up question: Lucas Moura has started all games so far, and also represents the cheap alternative to top6 club midfield. When do we think Son will start getting gametime?

With injuries, suspension and rotation hitting us hard (Scouts struggling to get 11 players on the pitch) has the tactic of a non playing or poor bench been found out ?

Is Kane dead to us? 12.5 for a player who hardly gets assists and cant do much more than scoring 30 goals a season. Neither him nor Spurs up to full speed.

I always felt that this HT, along with Rough with the Smooth, was just a way to justify a pre-written script. What do you mean by:

      "Especially looking for questions on

      - Mo or No Salah
      - Teams with good upcoming fixtures "

You just want me to say the words "Mo or No Salah?" so you can pretend you are responding to popular demand? Or literally ask, "which teams have good fixtures?"?

I remember asking a ton or really well thought-out questions approximately a year ago, and I got a bollocking for actually taking the thread seriously. I've barely responded to this HT since, because I realised then that you're looking for buzzwords rather than genuine points of enquiry.

Please take this as feedback: This segment of the Scoutcast, to me, doesn't feel genuine. It feels like an excuse to talk about whatever you want, which you legitimise by briefly citing the first person to fulfil the role of buzzword dropper.

It's not even subtle anymore. The questions are written in the HT, so I don't feel like I have a chance of asking a question which will get any amount of thought from the Scoutcast panel. I appreciate that answering specific, interesting questions, in depth requires more work and research, and in a short space of time, but that's whta this segment promises to me. And such is life, you're now competing with a host of other hosts, who are willing to put that work in.

Again, please take this as genuine feedback. Not intended to be an angry rant. Just thought I'd take the opportunity to express my view once rather than comment negatively every week, as I'd rather not comment here at all than be disruptive every week.

Still looking forward to the Scoutcast. Hope you have fun making it. Cheers

Some interesting points. I have to say that I am almost always disappointed by FFS'S choice of questions. I rarely contribute to the thread so have to accept some responsibility that questions I am interested in are rarely answered. My disappointment is usually in the decision always to select questions that deal with very utilitarian aspects of the game which can be answered simply with statistics and act as a guide for manager's strategy and transfers. I find it very dry and predictable and a missed opportunity to inject some fun into the scoutcast, after all, this is a game!

Examples of more general questions I would enjoy hearing the gang discuss might be

What single FPL occurrence made you the angriest and what happened

Players you just can't stop yourself buying/not buying because you have an fpl crush/vendetta on them

What's the psychology behind 'missing the boat' and how do you deal with it

Do you have a Saturday routine

Funny stories about fpl interfering with your private life

        Etc

Totally agree with this. Qs answered on the Scoutcast is basicly the first one to drop a simple and obvious Q that is going to be discussed anyway (i.e. Mo or No Salah this week). Probably a way to try to connect to the community. More in-depth and more interesting Qs rarely being answered, which is understandable, but don't see the point with this HT then really. Esp. fixtures is the most obvious that anyone can manage checking themselves, don't really see the point highlighting this.

That being said, the Scoutcast is usually a pleasure to watch anyway 🙂

Right. I never owned Salah, and won't for at least 4 more gameweeks, so there's one reason not to care about the Scoutcast this week. Plus, I've been looking at the fixtures for 2 months now, so there's another reason not to care. And so maybe there's space for one more question during the Scoutcast? Maybe not. So no need to tune in to see if my question is answered.

Perhaps that's why there are few replies to this HT nowadays. Only a year ago, this thread was thriving, but now people have figured out that their questions are not even taken into consideration, probably to save time and effort, since the Scoutcasters have lives outside of the Scoutcast (possibly!) 😀

I can see why it looks like this but the community section has ended up taking over the whole scoutcast pretty much so what we are trying to do is condense it, make it more focused and indeed make the scoutcast more structured. This gives us the chance to discuss things in more detail.

So one way we are doing that is have more regular features - in the same place each week. So if people just want to listen to partic bits they can.

Another is to focus the community section more around a FFS article Digest style format...which brings in community questions but also your views. So this week we are looking at the whole Mo or No Salah debate under the tag Player , key picks from the teams with the best upcoming fixtures for Team and for talking point Mark has chipped in from behind the scenes and wants us to debate luck v skill and attempt to set up a luck league.

By doing that we can pose your questions and also include your views.

As this is the first time we are doing this we have been a bit more selective this time around but in future weeks we will ask which player, team and talking point you think we should discuss and why?

While its a nice concept to think we can just gather all the questions here and on twitter - where we also ask for community views and questions - and answer them all, we can't. We have to edit them down. For the last three weeks we've actually spent most of the scoutcast on the community section and as a result it lost a lot of its structure.

Hope you do tune in though. Lots of new features - one features a ritual humilation of one us once a month. Eeks.

But I will add that please, please in future do pose questions here on the hot topic and if you want to get into a longer drawn out discussion about the structure of the scoutcast do it elsewhere on another thread or email us or do it on social media. It makes it harder to pinpoint questions when the discussion is taken up with other things.

I feel you’d be better served by having three scoutcast designated HT’s for the 3 points/questions you want to cover and getting the community to contribute to those. Then picking the best points/arguments to highlight on the ‘cast.

There are loads of questions being asked here that are taking people time to write out and most will not be brought up (not meant as a criticism, you would need a 24h show to cover all of them).

I think this could really help streamline the thread and make it easier for you as well.

I reckon it can go into one HT...three separate ones could get a bit unwieldy.

Would be something like this for future ones.

Each week on the Scoutcast we look at the key player, team and talking point.

Which player should we discuss and why?
Which team should we discuss and why?
What should our talking point be and why?

Feel free to pose us specific questions around your chosen player, team and talking point.

That way we can assess who the key ones are and add in the community's questions and views.

      Luck vs skill

The only skill in FPL is watching games and having the eye to pick out a player. That's it imo. If this game was a lot of skill then we would have people making a living out of the daily fantasy games

No skill in picking numbers out a table that OPTA have produced. . You can be boring and take no hits and play the game like Ville Ronke so I guess there is a slight skill in composing yourself. To do well a lot of luck is needed. Without luck you finish no where

This doesn't really make sense. Unless you are picking out a player based on liking their hair or goal celebration, then the eye test or instinct is largely a picture painted from the very same detail that is broken down into stats. I'm not saying that watching doesn't add something, but I don't see how automatically and instinctively coding a live sequence of events is much more skill based than what stats are useful for what and when

Well I'm not particularly a fan of Jay but I do like how he plays the game. Watches for how players move, are they being passed to etc are they getting forward. He uses his own initiative and if you can spot a team and players way of playing and use it then to me that's a skill in a way

What's skilful about picking numbers out of a table , numbers that are given to you by OPTA. If you collect the stats yourself then maybe, what is so skilful about going to the members table and picking players with good numbers . You tell me then? Are you saying there is no skill then ? Or are you trying to say using OPTA's stats is skill?

Either way it's my opinion and It stays

Statistical competency is obviously a skill. Statistics deals with collection/generation, organising, treating, interpreting and analysing data. You did not need to collect and organise the data yourself to apply skills to interpreting and analysing the data. Maybe for some people using provided data extends only to them looking at the number of goals and assists scored by players and selecting the player with to the greatest numerical value. Other managers may consider other datasets, even relations between these data, some managers may even apply statistical tests to determine the strength of a relationship, level of significance or infer a probability. Predicted scores, bonus points, price changes, these systems all require some degree of statistical competency to understand.

Maybe. It's a fair point if they actually doing all this then yes I will actually agree it's a skill as you have to be that way inclined and have the brain for that sort of thing I really haven't 🙂 . Not many of this type around. 1 or 2 on here and a few on FISO.

I refuse to play the game just, like you say, picking who has the most shots on targets and all this xG xA stuff its useful if you combine it with the eye test. I don't see that alone as skill or an achievemnt and there was none of this back in the day so you had to watch games and do it that way .

I don't agree with any of this HOF or elite rubbish myself but i see somone who watches and analyses that way then translates it into FPL points as a more intelligent player than somone who creates an algorithm that does it for them or uses the FFS member tables/RMT to make their every move . I guess it's all subjective though and I expect stats folk to feel differently .

End of day there is more luck than skill, most of it is keeping on top of it really

The ESPN Luck Index shows that Liverpool were the unluckiest team in the Premier League last season, and United were the luckiest.
In a table adjusted for luck, Liverpool should have finished 2nd, United 4th and Huddersfield should have been relegated instead of Stoke.

When it comes to FPL luck, I would say that two teams who qualified for my Top 10k Any Season mini-league with best finishes of exactly 10,000th were pretty lucky, while others who very narrowly missed out were somewhat unlucky.

It also feels unlucky when one fails to qualify for the next game-week in LMS by a single point.

Is it worth WCing just for the sake of saving TV?

Personally I've got a team that covers the big names Aguero, Salah, Hazard, Alonso, Mendy and even budget wonder Holebas.
But also got the likes of King and Jota from the beginning.
I opted not to WC because I feel the team is good enough.

Bournemouth have a stellar run of fixtures upto and including gameweek 10. Is it madness to triple up on Cherries players?

I currently have Steve Cook and Callum Wilson. I'm considering a mini wildcard and taking a 4 point hit by downgrading Alisson to Patricio and Mkhitaryan to Fraser. This would allow me to transfer out Kamara for Zaha.

A lot is made of Liverpool’s “tough” upcoming fixtures. But with CL starting, and LFC having an ok group, I would argue now is the time that Liverpool assets are relatively rotation proof that except for the SOU game. Surely you keep the likes of Robertson and Mane if you have had them since GW1 and have cash tied up in them?

Necessity not withstanding, if you can hold onto your WC until GW6, is it worth it? After this week it looks like there’s a fixture swing for Spurs who go from mid table to near the top, Fulham who go from near the bottom to third (so Arnie to Mitro?) and Leicester who according to the ticker, have the best games of all (for the next 5).

I consider pretty much every event in the game to have an element of luck. There is a distribution of probabilities for all events and player scores and the best players will be better able to assess the likelihood of each of these events and in a "packing problem" type exercise, pick the optimal combination of risks for giving points.

Good players don't minimise the effect of luck, they work with it, playing the odds rather than de-risking everything. For instance, Aguero usually has one or two 20+ points gameweeks in a season but this isn't luck hitting them as his expected distribution of points has a higher than normal for most other players chance of getting this score in any given gameweek. What the good players do is own Aguero in weeks when form and fixtures coincide and maximise the odds of the returns happening when he is owned by them.

Equally, for injuries - some players get injured more than others and force managers into making changes. Except some managers don't need to rush into changes because their benches are stronger and mean they don't need to spend transfers so quickly. Other managers knowingly have weak benches as they are aware that if they get an injury then there aren't likely to be too many other changes they need to make at the time so are happy to take the measured risk. However getting injuries with 1-2 non-playing players on the bench and another 1-2 players who are minimum price fodder (to allow for more premium players) is a high-risk strategy that may or may not work out.

Luck isn't about whether the random event happens or not, it's about being aware of the odds of each event and making a choice. The outcome may be good or bad but with so many of these choices over a season, good managers will make the most of more lucky events than be caught out by them.

          LOL,

I think it's true that one season isn't enough to judge the best managers overall and the HoF goes some way to addressing this, even if the HoF isn't perfect either. I have much more admiration for the skill of people who finish top 10k (or even top 5k) 80% of the time that for someone who finishes top 100 in one season, top 10k another but only top 500,000 in others even though the second person has had the best single season of the two.

I feel the opposite. People who are consisently highly ranked but never threatening the top 100 have twitter handles to protect, and can't handle a 100k+ finish. They're more likely to bottle it in the last few weeks by playing an ownership game. I take heed of their advice and respect their game, but I'd prefer to go for broke or bust myself.

        Summary:

Luck is everything that actually happens in a gameweek
Skill is making choices that give you the best chance of making the most/least of good/bad luck

I don't see this as a luck vs skill question as there will always be luck but skill can modulate the effect that this has.

Mkhi keep or sell. If sell, who for?
Should I bench Robertson this week? Bench is Doherty and AWB.
      Play or bench Mitrovic?
Is GK transfer worth it with only 1FT? Thinking of Patricio for Fabianski (other keeper is Foster) would mean keeping Mkhi for another week. WC already used.

      Question for the Scoutcasters:
      - "Boring" James Milner - will he continue to be a secure starter for Liverpool as champions league starts up or is he going to be a rotation risk? Even without the occasional penalty goal he's offering decent value as a lower-mid-price midfielder.

Others have added a lot on your luck/unlucky question, but:
      - Lucky is when your captain doesn't play and your VC gets a big points haul
      - Lucky is when you get a defender clean sheet because he's subbed off before his team gives up a late goal
      - Lucky is when your GK gets penalty save points for a penalty that's not on target and misses the goal completely (a "Baggio" circa WC 1994)
      - Lucky is when you captain a defender and he actually gets attacking returns (maybe that's more ballsy than lucky)
      - Unlucky is when you get a player subbed off before 60 minutes and he would've either gotten a clean sheet or gotten a penalty (if he was first-choice penalty taker)

    Hi lads,
Here's the situation (post WC GW3, OR 150k)
    Hennessy - Hamer
    Alonso - Mendy - VVD - AWB - Bennett
    Salah - Hazard - Maddison - Schurle - Neves
    Aubam - Mitrovic - Wilson

Point is, very scared of GW5 without Kun (c) vs. poor Fulham def.

    A. Aubam + Neves > Kun + Billing
    B. Aubam + VVD > Kun + Laporte
    C. Keep faith on Aubam and hope for Kun benched or blanked
    D. Other

    Any suggestion appreciated 🙂

I could name another 3 or 4 ahead of him and that's not because he sleeps with peoples wives. If it was longevity or best winger he is in top position.

    Another blank from Harry Kane.
How did he look in the game against Spain -- still far from his best?

Perfection reached? I'd say pretty close (aside from the bench ofc ;)) managed to get the big 3 in defence while still being able to afford Hazard, Mane, Salah and Aguero- I'm pretty happy with it!

    Patricio (4.0)

Alonso / Mendy / Robertson / WB (Bennett)
Mane / Salah / Hazard / Fraiser (Billing)
    Aguero / Wilson (Quaner)

    Feel free to copy 😉

I didn’t mean to sound condescending, I just don’t like either option tbh.
Ederson isn’t proving as good value as we though he would + you are almost certainly doubling up and using your 3rd City spot.
Better to rotate 2x 4.5m keepers in my opinion. Patricio is world class and with decent fixtures coming.
Hennesey is doing okay with decent fixtures (but is Guita a potential risk for the spot)
          Ryan seems decent as well.
Fab is good if picking for long term rotating. He is still getting save points and will probably be good value when fixtures/WH improve
