Ings and Murray proving excellent value for money as FPL forwards

The final match of Gameweek 5 delivered a better spectacle than was perhaps expected, with four goals shared between Southampton and Brighton at St. Mary’s on Monday evening.

Danny Ings (£5.7m) scored his third goal in four starts, while Glenn Murray (£6.5m) – owned by only 2.1% of Fantasy Premier League managers – notched his fourth league strike of the season.

Budget midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.4m) scored his second goal in as many matches, while Shane Duffy (£4.5m) – who had more shots last season than any other FPL defender who failed to score – delivered a goal and an assist as Brighton fought back from 2-0 down to salvage a point.

Our final Scout Notes article of Gameweek 5 rounds up the main Fantasy talking points from the south coast.

Southampton 2-2 Brighton and Hove Albion

  • Goals: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.4m), Danny Ings (£5.7m) | Shane Duffy (£4.5m), Glenn Murray (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m), Shane Duffy

Ineligible to face his parent club Liverpool next weekend, Danny Ings signed off from the Premier League for a fortnight with a goal and a bonus point to keep the 7.7% of FPL managers who own the Saints forward relatively happy.

It could easily have been more, though. Ings was denied by Brighton blocks twice in the space of a minute during the first half and could, perhaps should, have collected an assist when strike partner Shane Long (£4.8m) poked Ings’ glorious through-ball wide of the goal later in the match.

Ings had more penalty box touches, efforts in the box and big chances than any other player on show at St. Mary’s and now trails only Callum Wilson (£6.3m) among FPL forwards for shots in the opposition area this season.

As mentioned, Ings will now be unavailable in Gameweek 6 and his new employers sit bottom of our Season Ticker for the next six matches, with encounters against Chelsea and Manchester City to come not long after the trip to Anfield next weekend.

Ings is proving difficult to beat for value, however. Wilson and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) are the only forwards who are returning more points per million spent (Ings is averaging 4.39 points per million) in FPL and he is one of only two strikers in the sub-£6.0m bracket – the other being Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) – who currently provides security of starts as well as a genuine goal threat.

The first half at St. Mary’s was an unremarkable affair lit up by a superb long-distance strike from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.4m), the budget midfielder scoring in his second successive league match and rewarding some of the 70,000+ FPL managers who drafted him in for Gameweek 5.

Brighton came into this fixture without a league win on the road in ten months and having lost both away matches this season to nil.

The Seagulls’ dismal showing in the first 45 minutes seemed to suggest that they were venturing down a well-worn path in submitting to a meek defeat, with Nathan Redmond (£5.4m) perhaps the stand-out player for the hosts in the opening exchanges: the former Norwich City winger created as many chances as the rest of his team-mates combined in this match.

Brighton came out of the traps quickest in the second 45 minutes though, with the match developing into an enjoyable end-to-end affair.

Ings’ spot-kick just after the hour-mark (a penalty the Saints’ striker won himself) seemed to have put the game to bed, but a Shane Duffy (£4.5m) header just two minutes later ensured a grandstand finish.

Duffy had 28 efforts on goal last season without scoring, and his erstwhile owners will have been left cursing their luck as the Irish centre-back registered his second strike of the season last night – those two goals having come from just three attempts.

Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m) provided the set-piece delivery for Duffy’s goal to record his third assist of the season: no FPL midfielder has more. Knockaert almost registered another assist when his low cross was turned onto the post by substitute Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£6.8m).

While Knockaert has already trebled the number of assists he picked up last year, his underlying figures haven’t dramatically improved: the former Leicester winger is creating a chance only once every 70 minutes.

Knockaert is, however, the beneficiary at set plays in the absence of Pascal Gross (£6.8m), who missed out with an ankle knock.

Chris Hughton provided an update on the injured German in his post-match press conference:

He’s okay. He got a kick in the last game, which has ended up a little bit more troublesome than what we thought.

It’s certainly nothing that’s going to be longer term. We’ll look over the next week what progress he makes. Certainly, it’s not one that’s going to keep him out for a number of games.

Yves Bissouma (£4.9m) in for Gross was the only line-up change made by either manager for this encounter, with Hughton sending his troops out in a 4-3-3/4-5-1.

Bissouma was sacrificed for Jurgen Locadia (£5.4m) in the final 15 minutes as Hughton switched to a 4-4-2 in a bid to rescue a point, and the pressure told in the final minute of normal time when Duffy was flattened by James Ward-Prowse (£5.3m) in the area.

With Gross sidelined, Murray resumed spot-kick duties and despatched the subsequent penalty for his fourth goal of the season: no FPL forward has scored more.

With Gross having missed from the spot a fortnight ago and Murray scoring from 12 yards in successive matches, the 35-year-old forward may well have wrestled penalty-taking duties back from the German schemer for the time being.

Speaking of Murray after the match, Hughton said:

We changed the penalty taker last season when Glenn missed a couple, and that’s the competition you want.

You’d like to think it’s not only two players that want to step up and take penalties. Being away from home and 2-1 down, you’re not going to get a cooler head than Glenn Murray.

We’re delighted he got us back in the game. It was the type of game where if Glenn gets the one good chance in front of goal, you’re confident he’ll put it away.

With Murray possibly back on penalties and Brighton sitting top of our Season Ticker from Gameweek 8 onwards, the veteran striker could come back into our thoughts as a mid-price forward option.

While he has only been presented with nine chances this season (half the number Ings has had), Murray’s goal conversion of 44.4% is the best among FPL forwards.

A small concern would be the imminent return to fitness of Florin Andone (£5.0m), who could eat into Murray’s minutes this season.

Hughton gave an update on Andone after the match:

He’s fit. It’s just managing him the best way we can. He’s done a fair bit of training of late, we just need to make sure he’s up to speed before he plays.

Hughton also revealed that Jose Izquierdo (£5.9m) was “close” to a return for the under-23’s this Thursday.

Neither defence looked particularly worthy of Fantasy investment last night: Southampton allowed Brighton three clear-cut opportunities, while the Seagulls conceded four big chances to their hosts – that’s as many as Wolves and Bournemouth, both of whom can offer defensive options in the £4.5m bracket, have conceded all season.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Soares, Vestergaard, Hoedt, Bertrand; Elyounoussi (Ward-Prowse 76′), Hojbjerg, Lemina, Redmond; Long (Gabbiadini 76′) Ings (Davis 84′)

Brighton XI (4-5-1): Ryan; Montoya, Duffy, Dunk, Bong; Knockaert, Stephens, Propper, March (Jahanbakhsh 71′), Bissouma (Locadia 76′); Murray

Oh I thought you meant from an FPL perspective.
Not sure you can blame Mkhi either then.
Surely Auba then is a much bigger disappointment than Mkhi for example.

I don't know why so many people called him a bargain. No one owned him last season after the first 4 weeks where he started strong. No one owned him after he signed for Arsenal either. 107 points from 1712 minutes. 7-7.5m was ideal.

Aubemayang. Absolutely dreadful and inexplicable loss of form.
Bernardo Silva is severely testing me aswell. Constantly looks threatening but never delivers.

Third one might be a bit controversial but Liverpool. They have 3 clean sheets - it should be 5 if it wasn't for carelessness and lack of concentration. Salah and Mane are posting numbers off the scale but are emphatically not turning that into the FPL points they should be doing. For them to stump up 4 points between them on Saturday was criminal. Similarly, to only manage 1 goal against a travel sick brighton, and 2 goals against that Leicester defence was pathetic.

Ya I see where you are coming from on the Liverpool side of things. Watched that game the weekend and was frustrated at the amount of chances they didn't put away. Mane and Salah could of both had a couple. Before the GW I was an owner of both Salah and Mane but did the Salah switch to Hazard. It paid off but nervous about this coming GW watching Southampton last night. Salah could explode against them

It was rediculous wasn't it? No wonder Klopp was pulling his hair out in frustration, it should have been 5-0.

Good call in the end pal, you're already 20 points up on the deal. I kept the faith with them and was punished. Now I have to decide whether to keep the faith further or drop one for Hazard....

Exactly the same as me. Salah and Auba have frustrated, especially when everyone in your mini leagues opted for Aguero and Mane instead. Losing the sloppy and last minute clean sheets was a bit annoying bit annoying as well.

Hazard...can't even think about it any more. Know I need him though.

Salah. While mkhi disappointed too, he's 7m, and replaced an equally underwhelming Jota. My faith in Salah though has cost me 46pts (through captain choices and not switching to Hazard), and he's being matched by Mids half his price.

Still think he will come good, but VVD has been a letdown in terms of FPL. Had him as one of the most threatening players on setpieces, but has done little to connect with the FK's and corners pool have had so far. Believe theres a lot to come from him though.

Also a bit annoying that TAA has been as nailed as he has so far, That Gomez looks better on bps, and Robertson playing twice as attacking as he did last season (which already was very attacking). All this diminishes his value.

Honestly expected VVD to play: 35, Cleans: 18, Score: 4, Bonus 20. 170+ points basically. Seems a bit off as of now, but could still come good on that promise.

Definitely Mkhi since I got him in, especially as it was for Lucas Moura just before the MU-Spurs game. The only reason I'm tempted to keep him is the balance he provides for us, he probably deserves to start over Aubameyang at the moment. If I had Auba in my team he'd be my biggest disappointment.

Can't really complain about 2 clean sheets and 1 assist from van Aanholt but I was hoping for more.

Wasn't doing too well after Saturday games, but ending up on 61 points so slightly regretting my panic wildcard.

      But it's activated now...

      Ederson - Hamer
      Robbo - Alonso - Mendy - AWB - Doherty
      Mane - Hazard - Maddison - Fraser - Richarlison
      Aggy - Zaha - Wilson

Major transfer was Salah > Hazard

Can't help but think this will be a nightmare to pick an 11 every GW though, think I should downgrade a couple to upgrade some?

With the uncertainty of Mendy, i think it could be viable to have a strong bench if you keep him. Knee injury and Mendy could be everything and while you wait you can probably downgrade him to a cheapo if it´s long term and get Salah back for Hazard, once he´ll get his shooting boots back.-). Bournemouth have some nasty fixtures from GW10 or something, it could be nice to have a strong squad to cope with a mini transition, Palace too will get some stiffening fixtures at the time. Yes benching headaches but also great variation and rotation option when injuries and difficult fixtures comes, and also, all your picks when assessing them are good picks in themselves, which is a good thing isn´t it? Also wildcarding now should have an eye to long term plans.

This is legit the best wildcard I've seen ,ignore the haters who moan about benched points, having a strong bench is great ,yeah you'll have some choices to make and you'll b wrong at times too but now we hitting peak rotation season with ucl etc I think a strong 14-15 is the way to go

I did pretty much the same, was doing great then had a bad week due to not switching to Hazard and not having Frazer so hit an early WC, kind of regretting but it is what it is. This is pretty much one of my iterations but I went Mitro > Wilson and Downgraded Doherty to Bennett, still doesn't help the benching headache though!

Wolwes defending skills says hello.. indications early on suggests they would be difficult to break down even for the best teams. By far the toughest task this week for the top teams this weak in terms of quality, imo. City, Pool, Chelsea and Arsenal are up against weak defences, and to a lesser extent Spurs, which is a difficult match for them but Brighton are culpable of letting in goals as we saw yesterday. That said, Lingard seems like a good option in the next couple of gw´s.

Richarlison, but price locked for a week so wouldn't rush.

                  A question about price rises...

Is there an order to when they are done? As it stands now is there a possibility they will rise or fall after champions league games for instance.

Im tempted to WC and my plan leaves 0.0 in the bank so any rises would mess my plans. Am I safe with rises till the weekend or do I need to act now?

Rises and fall can definitely happen before UCL games.
The price changes doesn’t take mid week games into account

Knockaert certainly caught my eye yesterday. One to monitor and get possibly when BHAs fixtures clear up. On set pieces, gets in a lot of crosses and could provide great value at 5.5 if nailed

Foster, Silva and perhaps Ward are the only ones I would consider changing.

Sure is Trump! I’ve been burned by Cardiff already this year (Peltier) so it’s not with confidence. I’d love to stretch 0.2 more to Cairney.

                        Very, very different!
                        Too many picks I don’t like though to be honest;
                        Ederson,
                        Trippier, Tomkins
                        Özil, Fellaini

Kane could be good and ahead of the curve, but I don’t think he has looked good enough for 12.5 compared to other options.

Thanks for the input! Waiting on news of Mendy before deciding on Ederson as I’ve had Mendy from the start. I think Tripps could be good looking at their fixtures. Agree on the others - Ozil is a terrible idea!

I agree he could be excellent. I’m just very wary of the fb rotation at Spurs.
And Mendy is definitely a keeper if he is fit/out for 1 GW. Ederson isn’t good enough value imo.

One of Mane or Salah is enough. Either of those along with Hazard is stronger I’d say.

Moura to Richarlison for GW6 or hold out for 2FT the week after?

Have Salah and Hazard and happy with rest of team in general.

Spurs look gash so not sure on keeping Moura.

If you think he’ll start then why own him if you aren’t going to captain him??

It’s on him at the moment. Doubt that will change before the weekend barring anything abnormal happening.

Yes. No point keeping him if I don't captain him this week.

Think I'm good to go bearing injuries and if Mendy is fit I'm not even sure I'll bring him in

Anyone think of improvements for a - 4 point hit or am I GTG?

Currently sitting 21k with 357 points but want to pick top scoring captain. Bottled captaining Hazard at last minute and switched back to Aguero lol
