Sunday afternoon’s early kick-off yielded mostly frustration for Fantasy Premier League managers.

Eden Hazard and his Chelsea team-mates drew a blank against West Ham while Marko Arnautovic didn’t even play.

Furthermore, there was another big Lukasz Fabianski haul that looks set to be consigned to many of his owners’ benches.

We’ve gone over the key talking points in this latest Scout Notes article.

West Ham 0-0 Chelsea

Goals: None

Assists: None

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) blanked for the first time this season as Chelsea were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by London rivals West Ham. That was a huge disappointment to the 619,636 Fantasy managers who signed him for Gameweek 6 on the back of last week’s hat-trick. In the end, he was the only one out of Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) not to return points. Up next, league leaders Liverpool visit Stamford Bridge.

At the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Hazard registered half as many shots compared to his three-goal performance against Cardiff, perhaps the biggest reason for his underperformance Fantasy-wise. Not surprisingly, West Ham proved a much sterner test than the newly-promoted side from south Wales. But Hazard actually enjoyed double the number of penalty area touches recorded in Gameweek 5 during his outing at West Ham. Furthermore, he managed a similar number of successful passes in the final third too (one more than last week). At the very least, this first blank of the campaign for Hazard confirms that he definitely overperformed in that 4-1 win over Cardiff.

Maurizio Sarri believes that Hazard did not have as much of an impact as possible at West Ham because of his positioning. The former Napoli manager claimed a week ago that Hazard needed to spend less time dropping deep. Asked if he saw any improvement in that area on Sunday he said:

“Not in the first half, but better in the second. Today it was difficult to play today. They were cutting every pass to Giroud. It was really very difficult for the strikers and wingers.” – Maurizio Sarri

Despite not finding the net, Chelsea dominated both possession and the shot count at West Ham. They spent 71% of the match with the ball and nearly tripled the Hammers’ number of efforts on goal (17 to 6). However, it might be less of a surprise to see Chelsea fail to make all of that count to those who have watched all their matches so far this season. Local press reported on Thursday night that Chelsea were not as clinical as they could have been in their Europa League win over PAOK, not for the first time in 2018/19. In fact, they even suggested the time might come when Chelsea dominated a match and failed to win it. That is exactly what happened at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The same reporters also warned that Chelsea’s performance levels against West Ham might have been put at risk by so many first-team players starting in Greece. Asked if his team selection against PAOK and the introduction of the Europa League into the schedule affected Chelsea’s play, Sarri did not rule it out.

“I don’t know. I don’t think so. In this period I don’t think so. After seven matches it is difficult in March and April, not now. I don’t know why in England with the match away you can’t ask for a Monday night. In Italy it is normal.” – Maurizio Sarri

The Chelsea centre-forward position remains an unsettled position after Sunday’s draw. Olivier Giroud (£7.8m) started against West Ham and was joint-top in the match for shots on goal, but was withdrawn just after the hour-mark. Álvaro Morata (£9.0m) nearly made an instant impact in replacing the Frenchman but had a good chance well-saved by Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m).

Antonio Rüdiger (£6.0m) was forced off through injury in the second half. Gary Cahill (£5.2m) replaced him for the final 21 minutes and could start Gameweek 7 if the German does not win the race to be fit. Sarri is not too concerned about his knock though.

“I want to speak with the doctor. I think nothing serious. Maybe three or four days.” – Maurizio Sarri

Pedro (£6.7m) missed out on Gameweek 6 after injuring his shoulder in the Europa League. However, Sarri provided a positive update on the player in his post-match press conference.

“He is very important for us as he is the best player with movement without the ball. We are hoping to have him back by the end of the week.” – Maurizio Sarri

Meanwhile, Mateo Kovacic (£6.0m) recovered from the dead leg which forced him off against Cardiff, Cesc Fabregas (£6.3m) returned to the bench and Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.3m) missed out on the matchday squad entirely.

Chelsea now prepare for a League Cup match with Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night. Sarri is currently uncertain of his team selection though.

“They have had one more day of rest. I want to see the picture of the situation tomorrow morning in the training session. I don’t know, maybe I will change 11, maybe 5.” – Maurizio Sarri

The leading Fantasy story from a West Ham perspective was that Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) was not passed fit. He was withdrawn with an injury in Gameweek 5 and could not recover in time for Gameweek 6. Manager Manuel Pellegrini did not give any timeframe on Arnautovic’s return, nor on Javier Hernandez (£6.3m) who missed out through illness. Michail Antonio (£6.8m) led the line for 65 minutes before Lucas Pérez (£6.3m) replaced him.

“Marko tried in the last minute to see if he was 100 per cent fit. He just worked yesterday a little bit on set pieces and he felt uncomfortable, and this morning he couldn’t run. So he tried, but he could not make it.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Fabianski proved to be the highest-scorer in Sunday’s match, continuing the trend of saving his best performances for the tough matches. A first clean sheet of the campaign, six saves and three bonus made for an 11-point haul. However, as is often the case, very few Fantasy managers are expected to benefit as he was benched by 564,795 for Gameweek 6.

West Ham had the best chance to win the game but could not take it. Substitute Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m) found an unmarked Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.8m), who scored twice last week, at the far post, but the Ukrainian headed wide.

West Ham XI (4-3-3): Fabianski; Masuaku, Diop, Balbuena, Zabaleta; Rice, Obiang, Noble (Sánchez 85′); Anderson (Snodgrass 75′), Antonio (Pérez 65′), Yarmolenko.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Alonso, Rüdiger (Cahill 69′), David Luiz, Azpilicueta; Kovacic (Barkley 79′), Kanté, Jorginho; Hazard, Giroud (Morata 65′), Willian.

Thoughts on this team using 2 transfers on Ings to Kane and Hazard to Richarlison? Will WC probably after week 8 over International break. Guess question comes down to whether to have Kane (hudd CAR) or Hazard (LIV sou). Of course having missed Hazard’s haul v Cardiff brought him in last week and got his 3 points v West Ham so probably means missing haul v Liverpool.......

    Patricio
    Trippier Van Dijk Alonso
    Mané Richarlison BSilva Fraser
    Aguero Mitrovic Kane (c)

    Foster Wan-Bissaka Tomkins Billing

Its good cos youve list out on ver few potential points.

Its bad cos you obviously haven't got a great bench to cover potential no shows.

He wont outscore Richarlison but the opposite.. thats for sure..

While Rich can score a goal, Walcott can score as well... I consider FT as -4 so I conclude it not worth -4 this week.. saving FT may mean alot while going into internation break very soon

I tried something similar with my WC last week, but I'm just not comfortable having no defensive cover on my bench, and also there is no 4.5m keeper I'd be happy having as set and forget.

If you could go with Mane instead of Salah you could probably get away with it.

Still the defence is a worry for me.
          We know Trippier will be rotated at some point, yes Duffy covers him, but some weeks you're going to have;
Wolves defensive double up, Palace and Brighton as your defence.
If you think it's worth it to accommodate the 4 then go for it, but I think realistically you need to downgrade one to get a better overall team.
FYI I have Aguero, Kane, Hazard and Mane.
This allows a premium keeper, 1 x premium defender, +2x 5m defs and a playing bench.

Morning dzz, big couple of gw's coming up. 2FT and 0m itb

    Patricio — foster
Alonso shaw Mendy — Robbo awb
Dilva Maddison Salah pedro — Stephens
    Kun king zaha

    A: Salah + Zaha + Pedro >> Hazard + Lacazette + Fraser (-4)
    B: Salah + Zaha + Pedro >> Ramsey + Kane + Richarlison (-4)
    C: Mendy/Robbo + Zaha + Pedro >> Doherty + Lacazette + Fraser (-4)
    D: Mendy + Robbo + Pedro >> Bennett + Peltier + hazard (-4)

    All options have their merits.
    - A and C are similar but I keep Salah over hazard
    - D means I have all of Salah,Kun and hazard. Defence is cheaper but it’s fine till in WC in gw9/10
    - B is the punty option till i WC

Is it still the 5 yellow rule for a suspension? If so it means Holevas is 1 Away and Trent A-Arnold is 2 Away so for me it would rule me out bringing them in for Mendy..

Hard to say as both Pereira and Moura could play and thats a risk you'll need to carry plus the -4. Although Trip and Mad seem like good options.

Took a -8 last week and regretted it. Net loss of -2 for me, which could have been more if Mitrovic hadn't saved it.

I think this GW is a tricky one - but to be fair if Spurs bully Hud then you'll be fine.

Wildcard smooth - 77 pts, rank jump from 162K to 55K.

Nine new players in... the new recruits that were in my XI got 33. They ones they replaced got 2 in total!

So lots of joy, especially getting Trippier and Hart in as they were a bit of a gamble.

Woe in that Fraser and Hazard blanked, but only a mini-woe. Have high hopes for them next few.

Pressure on Az now on the Scoutcast as David also had a good wildcard, and Andy had a brilliant one last week.

The new recruits in my XI.

          Hennessey
          Maddison
          Mitrovic
          Trippier
          Hazard
          Fraser

The six ones they replaced in my XI were.

          Pedro 0
          Mkhy 0
          Mendy 0
          Arnautovic 0
          David Silva 0
          Foster 2

I didn't expect that level of no shows I must admit.

Well that WC couldn't have gone much better! Fair play to you.

I also WC'ed last week, but had a few close decisions go against me. Maddison/Richarlison was the flip of a coin, literally, and went wrong.
Silva is a frustrating one, such a wonderful player, but just not secure enough, especially once KdB returns.

      + Maddison in for Walcott
+ Double CRY Defenders paying off (PVA + AWB)
      + Salah (c)
      - Fabianski on the bench even though I had 0 CHE assets and he seems to constantly provide in games like these.

Rough - Rico coming on for Dilva for 0 points, and Doherty coming on for Pedro for 2 points. Ended up with a 5-2-3 formation.

Smooth - Vardy getting 11 points at 4% ownership, Aguero (C)

Rough - Pep took Aguero (c) off early yet again. A big rough IMO as he could have scored another couple against a tired Cardiff defence in the last 10 minutes or so.

Smooth - 78 points for the GW, another green arrow after a nightmare GW3 WC, moved up to 53k OR.

Thanks Az .. you’re a ‘bit’ of a Maddison fan .. would you get rid of him to Richarlison? Maddison has been a little fortuitous although every point counts .. just fancy Rich to carry on where he started .. was all set to move on BSilva until his 14 pts this week .. still could .. other option is losing Mane .. (plan to lose him for Salah eventually) .. can’t have them all .. keen to know your thoughts?

Rough 48pts total. Blanks from: Fraser, Richarlison, Hazard, Zaha, Mane, Foster. Played Foster instead of Fabianski. VVD 1pt. Transfered Mendy to Pereira who didn't play. Aguero out before 60mins. Dropped from LMS

Smooth: Hughes(6) in for Pereira. Wan Bissaka, Thought whole week that I will C Hazard but changed armband to Aguero on Saturday morning. Still inside top 2k and team should be ok (Pereira & VVD ?) to go with. All chips & WC still in pocket.

To everyone with Wan Bissaka coming off their bench - you don't deserve the gift of AWB - you should all email FPL and ask that your points are deducted to reflect your doubt in the greatest £4.0m defender FPL has ever seen.

      Learn your lesson. NCNB.

      Rough:

On a wildcard, I sold 2 goals, 4 assists, 2 defender clean sheets and 5 bonus points in 6 players. It wasn't looking good on Saturday with my pre-wildcard team doing well. Hughes' assist set things in motion, and quicker than I could refresh the scores, there were returns from Bernado Silva, Alexander-Arnold, Jimenez and Sakho. Things could have been worse on Saturday, as I also sold Aubameyang, who scored and offside goal against Everton.

      Smooth:

My new players actually did well too, almost matching my sold players: 2 goals, 4 assists, 1 defender clean sheet and 4 bonus points from 6 players. New signing Vardy (11 pts) was my Saturday hero, with Pogba and Yedlin getting 5 points each. But I had to wait till Saturday for my main boost of points from my Arsenal triple attack of Ramsey (9pts), Ozil (3pts) and Lacazette (8pts). I had Lacazette captain over Hazard, my vice captain, who only got 3 points, which effectively gave me a successful Arsenal quadruple-up.

On top of this, I'd kept Alonso and Wan-Bissaka's clean sheets, with 3 bonus points for the latter, as well as Aguero's goal. This gave me a total of 76 points and I rose from 443k to 186k in the rankings.

Actually, since Jimenez and Sakho would have been stuck on my bench, I'd have only scored 65-69 points with my pre-wildcard team, depending on who I captained, so I'm feeling quite pleased to have avoided disaster. You might say that I "wildcarded from a position of strength", but i wouldn't, because I don't really know what it means 😀

Some interesting WC picks there - Pogba, Ozil? What made you go for them? Pens, and supporting Arsenal?

          "Yes" and "yes, probably!"! Haha

5 home games in 7 for a (supposedly) improving Arsenal team seemed like an opportunity to gain ground. And their prices are decent if they deliver on my expectations (which may be a little too high), and good to switch to players around them if necessary (e.g. Ramsey > Rich; Ozil > Son).

I'm expecting more points from Pogba this year than last year, and on that basis he should be a decent punt. I wrote about him and Ozil hopefully increasing their conversion rates this year in a community article, and this influenced my thinking too. It looks like Ozil might actually do that since he seems unlikely to shoot unless he's standing on the goal line 😆

Oops I have to correct a mistake: With Mendy, Mkhi and Pedro not playing, I would have got all those points in my pre-wildcard unless I sold any of these players. So my pre-wildcard team would have got exactly the same points (76).

I think that enough to call this good gameweek a "rough" gameweek. Wasted wildcard? At least I have Jonny and Doherty primed and ready to join in the action against Southampton alongside Patricio 🙂

Smooth; Double Palace shut-out for the second week running, lack of Hazard didn't burn me as I elected to give Mane & Auba one more week, Auba scored, Kun, Salah(c), Robertson.

      Smooth - 64 points and a rise from 125k to 91k.

I took Salah out for (let, tot) and was delighted to see him notch two blanks. However I didn't want to push my luck and planned to get him back in this week and captain him. I also brought in Mitrovic (took out Siggy and Kane) and was very happy with 24pts from my new boys.

Also performing were AWB, Alonso, Ederson, Aguero, and even Duffy notched an assist for 4pts.

Rough - took out Kane to fund Mitro and Salah but it's not a move I regret... it's given my team better balance and Kane still doesn't look right at the moment.

Blanks from Zaha, Fraser, Hazard and Walcott were disappointing - Walcott is on the chopping block.

Not so much gameweek 6 specific, but it is the week where I have taken stock of my bad decisions/luck and their cost.
GW1) Playing Boly over Mendy -14pts
GW2) Captaining Salah over Aguero -11pts
GW3) Transfering out Boly for a hit before his goal - 11pts
GW4) Transfering De Gea out for a hit before his C/S -8pts
GW5) Not using my FT to switch Salah to Hazard -31pts
      GW6) Playing S.Cook over W.Hughes - 6pts

Silky smooth weekend. Wildcarded and saw Immediate returns from Mitrovic, Lacazette, and Maddison, as well as a clean sheet from Bellerin. 74 points, green arrows, and back to the top of my mini league. And that’s before the super jammy decision to play Fabianski over Patrício.

Rough: not much to complain about, except maybe leaving AWB’s points on the bench yet again.

Getting the captaincy right was a small smooth, although Salah could easily have gotten 16pts that game. Hughes delivering 6 points when called upon was also. Biggest smooth was doublepalace defence delivering second week in a row.

Two big roughs: VVD getting benched five mins before logging a Cleanmaking that 50/50 of him and Rob saltier eac gwk that passes. Tripz loosing his Clean in the dying minutes was a gian t buzzkill.

64pts was a good gwk, but it could easily have been 90.
