Mohamed Salah and Benjamin Mendy have become less fashionable options to own according to the current top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers.

Both players have seen their popularity in that bracket fall going into Gameweek 7, as the Liverpool man blanked again and Mendy did not play once again.

We continue to look at how the top managers are lined up for the latest round of matches Gameweek 7 and how that compares to the overall trends.

Most Selected Players

The most popular line-up for the top 10k managers sees the departure of two main stars for the first time this season. Salah and Benjamin Mendy both made way this week for more popular options such as Richarlison (47.8%), Ryan Fraser (49.6%) and James Maddison (47.5%) in midfield. Meanwhile, Kieran Trippier (41.1%) and Ryan Bennett (32.7%) increased in popularity in defense. Suddenly Salah has become as a huge differential in the top 10k.

However, his overall ownership (in the sample) still makes him the second most-owned midfielder with 41.65%. His team-mate Sadio Mane features in the most selected team for both samples, as well as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcos Alonso, Andrew Robertson, Eden Hazard, Sergio Aguero and Aleksandar Mitrovic; all in-form players.

The overall teams have a greater concentration of Harry Kane ownership, as many managers started the season with him already, which is the same story with David de Gea.

The stats suggest that we might be about to witness a large swin in player ownerships, with Salah and Mendy especially shaking things up.

Selling them has allowed more managers to contemplate investment in the likes of Hazard, Kane and Trippier as well as cheaper options from Wolves, Bournemouth and Leicester.

This, in addition to European competitions taking more of an effect, may cause the very successful early season “template” to be broken up and create more interesting different alternatives.

As expected, the Wildcard chip is the only one that has significant usage this week with 4.6% of the top 10k managers activating it. This raises the percentage of Wildcards used to 55.3%.

If we compare the chip usage of the top 10k and a sample of 50,000 managers outside of that bracket, we see that the top players of FPL are much more lenient in using their Wildcards early. This is perhaps what helped them reach that high rank early on.

Only 29.7% of the overall sample had activated their wildcards so far, as compared to the 55.3% of the top 10k.

Chip Usage

However, the overall usage of the Triple Captain and Free Hit chips are actually higher than the top 10k percentages. This might be an indication on how little an advantage those chips give earlier in the season.

As a result of those Wildcard deployments, it has now come to pass that the majority of the top 10k have used one chip. 47.3% of managers in that bracket have used that many so far, while 37.1% are yet to deploy any chip.

Meanwhile, the majority of overall teams have not used chips yet. 55.3% of these managers still have their chips intact.

Captains

When it comes to captaincy for Gameweek 7, both samples opted for Aguero as the top choice. However, the top 10k had much more faith in him with a captaincy record so far this season of 83.35%, while the percentage for the overall sample was less than half of that: 40.35%.

Overall players still saw Salah (13.22%) and Kane (12.82%) as important captaincy choices this week.

Not sure how but after poor start I have managed to get into top 3K which is a minor miracle.

Big wins of recent weeks have been Doherty, Sterling, Arnie and Siggy plus bringing in Haz for Salah a few weeks back (annoyingly didn't captain him for 20 point haul).

Sure it will all go south from here but enjoying the moment.

Thanks to all within this website for all your help along the way.

FPL is a leader's game. Easier to protect your rank than chase. Just make sure you stick close to the Top 10k team and you will be fine.

I can't say don't sell Salah for the short term as I literally just made that move but I do think people aren't looking at the fixtures enough, even if he is 12.9m...

Below are the upcoming fixtures for Liverpool and who the likes of Kane, Hazard and a Man City attacker play in the same gameweeks. There's some decent enough captain options but Salah could be captain in 3 of the 4 gameweeks after Man City so be mindful of that if you're potentially going to want him back after selling this week to fund Sterling, Hazard or Kane.

    GW9 - Huddersfield (a)

    Chelsea v Man Utd
    Man City v Burnley
    West Ham v Spurs

    GW10 - Cardiff (h)

    Spurs v Man City
    Burnley v Chelsea

    GW12 - Fulham (h)

    Man City v Man Utd
    Chelsea v Everton
    Palace v Spurs

With this in mind what are your thoughts on aguero being a makeweight to bring salah back as part of 2ft.

Was thinking something like the following

      Aguero + Moura > Salah + Jiminez

Ok, but you can captain Haz in each of those gameweeks, and also Aguero. Or even Mane for 3 mil less. With CL rotation threat and his lack of form, there is no need to rush to get Salah IMO

I suppose my point is - what were people expecting v Chelsea and Man City which now makes him a player they need to transfer out when they didn't this week and fixtures about to turn again

It’s not the fixtures that are the problem though is it? He still had chances against Chelsea but looks utterly short of confidence to me.

I wouldn't be selling Salah because he blanked vs Chelsea or the fact he has Man City next (he's scored vs City in each of his last three meetings I think).

He doesn't look like the same player as last season, he's looks low on confidence and Liverpool now have genuine alternatives to replace him - not necessarily from the start but mid game. When did Salah get hooked that early last season? Understandable if they were winning at a canter and attention was on a midweek CL game but they were chasing the game!

I'm not definitely get rid of Salah but Kane looks appealing next week vs Cardiff and there's a strong argument to be made that Mane and possibly even Firmino can match Salah for 3/3.5 less - and with them you can still have Hazard, Kun and Kane!

Great point. Kane's gone after Cardiff for me.

West Ham and Palace away are Derby games and Spurs are away. Will be tough low scoring games imo. Not much in the City game either. Wolves away after that, Chelsea and Arsenal after that.

Wouldn't worry too much bout Haz but I wouldnt like to be capping him.

Salah could be a good TC shout in one or two of these fixtures

Planning (season keepers barring injury in capitals):
    Hennessey Hamer
    Pva AWB BENNETT ALONSO Trippier
    MANE HAZARD Pereyra Traore Moura
    KANE Jiménez Mitrovic

    GW8 /
GW9 Pva Hennessey —> Alisson Robbo
    GW10 Moura —> Maddison
    (0.6 then left)

Thinking double Liverpool defence for Hudds Cardiff is better than Jiménez or Mitrovic to Firmino, Shaq and Stuzza could just as easily be the hitters and can’t afford Salah.

No City is an issue but I think Mendy is brittle and Kane will outscore and out-minute Aguero. Ederson later perhaps?

Traoré to be a cheap heaven sent gift before long.....

    Any thoughts?

That's the problem, I'm quite undecided. Everton will be attacking enough with Rich back that Wally isn't that bad of a choice. I'm likely just going to hold on to Mendy. Those are the only real question marks on my team.

would King to Arnie tickle your fancy?

you're team is solid all the way through but maybe too many options? downgrade bench a little & use funds in stating 11?

    Patricio. Hamer.
    Mendy. Alonso. AWB. Bennett. Peltier.
    Salah. Hazard. Mane. Maddison. Stephens.
    Aguero. Wilson. Kamara.

    a) Mendy+ Mane + Wilson > Taylor(Burnley) + Knockaert+ Kane for -8....?? Ultimate gamble.. Will it pay off..???

Cuz : Taylor might keep cleansheet vs Huddersfield at home, Knockaert got westham at home and Kane might score 2 against Cardiff.. So does that 8 pts get make up and get some extra pay..???

Mane has some juicy fixtures coming up. Not sure you want to get rid of him now

Mane could go mad v Cardiff and Hudds. Taylor and Knockaert don’t scream FPL assets. For the sake of one game it’s a big gamble

What would you do with this lot? Team doesn’t look too bad for next week so tempted to save FT:

    Hennessey
    Alonso Bellerin AWB
    Salah Hazard Richarlison Maddison Fraser
    Aguero Zaha

    Hamer; Bennett Mendy Kamara

What do we reckon on Perreira v Chilwell v Maguire?

Leicester's run from GW9 happens to coincide quite nicely with Palace's horror run. Could also go for any of the 4.5s, but quite fancy the threat of the Leicester boys

So better Townsend -> Westwood (4,5 mid), or Wilson -> Joselu (5,0 fwd)?
