Gameweek 8 marks the emergence of new popular faces in the top Fantasy Premier League teams.

Harry Kane’s recent form and the easy (on paper) fixture against Cardiff made many managers consider selling one of their expensive assets to be able to afford him.

How many managers did that and how that affected ownerships in the top 10,000 teams is the focus of this article.

Captaincy

Kane does rank very competitively among the top 10k for the first time this season with 52.5% of teams in that bracket giving him the armband, Eden Hazard coming in at second with 33.2%.

Gameweek 7 was actually the first time Kane was high in the captaincy rankings, where he ranked second, but that was with just 4.7% as the majority went for Sergio Aguero that week. In a complete reversal, Aguero captaincy percentage is just 5.4% this week.

In addition, 1.01% of the top 10k managers actually played the Triple Captain chip on Kane this week.

In terms of effective ownership, Kane reached his season of 108.4% this week which makes him the second after Hazard with 128.1%.

Compare Kane’s new effective ownership to his 17.9% of last week and this give us an idea about how more managers have backed him this week.

Most Selected Players

Looking at the most selected players in the top 10k, we see that Aguero’s ownership has dropped dramatically this week, down to to just 68.9% compared to Gamweek 7’s 93.3%.

Another player who suffered significant top 10k ownership decrease is Sadio Mane, who dropped from 52.9% to 38.9%.

It seems that Hazard and Kane dominated the top 10k transfers this week, with Kane rising from 17.6% to 55% and Hazard from 84.2% to 94.8%, which makes him the most owned player in the top 10k.

Meanwhile, if we focus only on Wildcard teams activated this week, we see that it’s very similar to the most selected team. However, the exceptions are Marko Arnautovic being the more popular third striker instead of Aleksandar Mitrovic and more opting for the cheaper Liverpool defender of Trent Alexander-Arnold instead of Andrew Robertson.

Chip Usage

That being said, not many Wildcards were active this week, only 2.1% relative to 4.6% last week. The second most popular chip this week is the Free hit with 1.7% usage.

The Free Hit managers probably wanted to keep hold of Salah, Mane and /orAguero for the long run and still benefit from Kane’s potential points.

While Kane is the popular pick this week, it remains to see how Salah, Mane and Aguero will perform in their mutual clash as they suddenly became picks of a more differential nature.

Few things I want to ask

    1) is Glen Murray a good option

Hearing more about Arnie & Mitrovic ,is Murray going undetected ? With Brighton fixtures & his form he could be golden .

    2) if KDB is back ,how does it affect selection of kun ,sterling etc
And is sane a viable option to cover city mid?

    1. Klein
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

      1) Murray is good option specially with those fixtures. But we probably cant expect return every week from him. I am thinking between him and mitro.
      2) i believe kun and sterling will still be played most games. Rest of the mid should see more rotations now.

    Aguero small sales.
Hazard, Maddison and TAA the 3 most bought.

I like it. I have the same forward line on my wc. I see the mane to kbd plan but I think he’ll really be eased in, I know we’re so used to him playing every game but I can’t see that for the first month that he’s back. I would try to get sterling in for mane, just my opinion. But nice team

I gave a look through my local minileague after the deadline and this very thought crossed my mind as lots of em gave the armband to Eden,Sergio and even Mo and not a whole pile of em even own Kane.

Either way this could be a huge swing in the fpl season,i just hope we backed the right horse.

Yeah, I had planned on getting him in and captaining all last week, but I let the Alli and Eriksen injuries spook me. This week, it’s the two days off and expectation that they will limp into the IB. I’m sure that will mean a hat trick. Haha. Good luck.

    Fab/Hamer
    Alonso,TAA,bennet,yedlin,AWB
    Salah,hazard,Ozil,Madison,masuaku

It looks ok. I'd have robbo over alonso, just a personal choice. Ozil is a nice choice but I think arsenal's fixtures start to get a little harder soonish. I would probably get vardy for arnie and downgrade ozil - that's so boring and template but that's what I'd do

Didn't want to lose Kun or Salah, and with Mendy & KDB potentially back Sane's starts are less secure so seemed worth a punt on Sane>Son for free.

Kun is enough City coverage (bar a fit KDB) at this point..

Sterling to Mane and upgrade Yedlin to Alonso. Son to KDB (if fit, which I'm assuming he should be).

That's because there are SO MANY decent options in the midfield that not owning the likes of Sterling even if they haul wouldn't matter much given their ownership.

Now coming to Kun, how many striking options can match Kun for his consistency and explosiveness? Plus, his ownership. One big haul from him and every non-owner goes tumbling down the ranks.

It's the other way around; there are hardly any decent options in midfield. Firmino, Vardy, Arnautovic, Mitrovic and Jimenez all offer better value than the midfielders (bar Maddison) in their respective price brackets. We know pricey midfielders score more points than pricey forwards, so get them.

So you're telling me there's no point owning the top scoring forward in FPL? The player with the highest ownership in the game.

With value options like Maddison, Richarlison, Fraser, Gudmondsson - your claim of lack of value in the midfield is pretty misleading.

Depends how much he scores. Doubt the highest scoring forward gets close to the third highest scoring midfielder.

As things stand, Hazard and Alonso are the ones are the only ones ahead of Kun.

And the discussion was not even about elite midfielders, it was about who is a better City asset to own - Kun or Sterling. The answer is straightforward but no harm if you have a different opinion on this. 🙂

The run of fixtures for the likes of Spurs, City & Liverpool with CL and domestic cup games in almost every midweek from now to Christmas is horrendous ... rotation awaits ...

Time to diversify into Chelsea, Arsenal et al ?

... mmm ... Ben Davies says hello ....

It is different this year though, many players were coming into the season off the the back of a WC and after just a few weeks went straight in to GW 1 of the season ...

How many games including the World Cup will Kane have played by Christmas ?

          Fair point 🙂

I think Kane's form would have been different if he was eased into action like Hazard was.

They both played similar minutes at the WC. On the other hand, one could argue that Hazard has been a totally different beast this season. It's the first time, he's playing under an attacking manager and he's FLYING.

I don't remember Poch ever playing 2 'No. 9s' together, not even during his Espanyol days. I'll be highly surprised if he does that now.

Expecting Son, Moura, Lamela to start behind Kane. I've heard that Cardiff mark the opposition ST heavily which benefits the runners off the ball. Son or Moura could be in for a party.

Kane playing deeper in the initial games allowed Moura to trouble defences. That's because he has the quality to do that - his runs, movement, pace etc.

If he plays Llorente and Kane up top, he will have to tweak his tactics as both Kane and Llorente are traditional STs and neither of them can do what a Moura (or Son) can.

It basically happens with highly owned players.

Let's say Salah's ownership at the start of the season was 90% in the top 10k. And 60% captained in the top 10k him in GW1, that's the case of EO being over 100%.

Normally about top 10K + captaincy + triple captaincy.

      Hazard was 94.8 starting + 33.2 captain = 128ish

Its bit of a silly FFS name really ... ownership is ownership and can’t be over 100 % ... it’s needs a different name like ‘captaincy ownership’ or something like that to link it the number of people captaining a player

The story brought a stinging reaction from United Neville, as he opened his heart on Sky Sports in a rant directed at Woodward and the United owners.
"To be honest with you, I'm furious," declared Neville. "I'm furious going back three or four years ago when David Moyes was sacked when it broke the day before to journalists I think of Louis Van Gaal being sacked on the evening of an [FA Cup] final and finding out from other people.
"I think about how the club has been operated. If this is true - we don't know if it's true yet - but if this is true and Jose Mourinho is going to walk out at Old Trafford tomorrow as almost like a dead man walking, those fans will absolutely turn to that boardroom.
"It's unacceptable I have to say that Jose Mourinho will get the biggest support he's ever had in his life tomorrow i think in that ground - and I'll be there to give it to him.
"I love that football club. It has given me everything, but enough is enough. When you have an opportunity to appoint three or four managers, you have to look at the people appointing the managers and signing the players. The players are running this now. "Who is qualified in that football club to be able to tell Jose Mourinho that (Toby) Alderweireld or (Harry) Maguire or (Jerome) Boateng are not better than the centre-backs that they've got?
"Who is qualified at that football club? There are only two people who I can think of and they wo''t have been consulted, in fact we know they weren't consulted - Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson.
"I'm reacting maybe a bit emotionally but I don't particularly care any more to be honest with you in respect of what I say. You can say it's unprofessional but I have to speak as a fan and what I feel. At the end of the day I'm on Sky Sports and I'm here as someone who offers a level of neutrality.
"It's difficult running a football club, it's difficult managing a football team, it's difficult playing in a football team - it's not always easy, there are lots of challenges but what you have to do is ensure you operate in the right manner and what I have to say at this moment in time is that there is something rotten to the core of the decisions that have been made over the last four or five years and it has to be coming from the top.
"If I'm the person who employs the guy underneath me and he fails then eventually I've got to take responsibility for it."
