As expected, Harry Kane was at the centre of Fantasy Premier League drama as Spurs beat Cardiff at Wembley.

After being heavily backed as the best captain candidate for Gameweek 8, he served up just one point.

We’ve got more details on why that happened and all the other FPL talking points from the match in this latest edition of Scout Notes.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Cardiff City

Goals: Eric Dier (£4.8m)

Assists: Davinson Sánchez (£5.8m)

Harry Kane (£12.5m) let down his 380,000+ new owners by recording just one FPL point in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Cardiff. The forward spent a lot of time dropping deep and, according to our Members Area, his average position for the match was nearer to the centre-circle than the penalty area. Even Lucas Moura (£7.4m) and Erik Lamela (£6.4m) registered average positions closer to the Cardiff goal than Kane.

He still had more shots than anyone else at Wembley on Saturday afternoon, but Moura outperformed him for efforts inside the box. Three of Kane’s team-mates registered more touches in Cardiff’s box too, two of whom played fewer minutes than him. With Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal on Tottenham’s schedule in the next six Gameweeks, many of those who signed Kane for Gameweek 8 may be looking to immediately remove him from their squads.

England’s captain was not the only underperformer for Spurs, who did not look like they were in control of the match throughout. They were sloppy in midfield and their poor passing, in the absence of Christian Eriksen (£9.2m), Dele Alli (£9.0m) and Mousa Dembélé (£4.9m), allowed Cardiff to spend large spells camped in the Spurs half. The Bluebirds’ tactic of high pressure on Spurs certainly had its desired effect.

“Being honest we need to improve a lot. We need to kill the games and have more control. We need to be calm. When you’re at home you must control the game. I am happy, the effort was fantastic and it wasn’t easy after the defeat to Barcelona.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Son Heung-min (£8.3m) was another Spurs asset to disappoint. He had just two efforts on goal and has now gone 18 matches without a goal for his club. Furthermore, he was taken off in the 72nd minute when manager Mauricio Pochettino was still chasing goals.

Danny Rose (£5.8m) was withdrawn with a groin injury in the closing stages, and still needs to be assessed.

“It was the same as it was after Huddersfield, a problem in (Rose’s) groin. He felt it again. Hope that nothing important but of course we need to assess. He needs to go to the national team and see what happened. He needs to check in with the national team.” – Mauricio Pochettino

The Gameweek 7 injury to Jan Vertonghen (£6.0m) allowed Davinson Sánchez (£5.8m) to make his second successive start. He demonstrated his set-piece threat once again, his first-half shot leading to Eric Dier‘s (£4.8m) goal. That was his second assist of the season.

Cardiff showed off some neat approach play but it was another match where a distinct lack of quality in the final third was obvious. Junior Hoilett (£5.2m) was the prime example of the problem, as he found himself in great positions down the left-wing on multiple occasions and still failed to deliver. He was reticent to use his left-foot, consistently looking to cross with the outside of his right or attempting to cut inside, all with little success.

Utility man Callum Paterson (£5.2m) was deployed up front and did cause Spurs some problems with his hold-up play. He set up several decent chances for Cardiff, with Hoilett and Josh Murphy (£4.8m) going close. Hoilett was especially unlucky not to score a first-half equaliser as Toby Alderweireld (£5.9m) produced an exceptional block on the line. However, the fact that Neil Warnock has now named five different options at centre-forward in eight league matches is indicative of the attacking problems facing the Cardiff manager.

Sean Morrison (£4.9m) proved his goal threat from set-pieces yet again and he nearly scored in the 63rd minute with a back-post header from a free-kick. Hugo Lloris (£5.4m), back in the side for the first time since Gameweek 3, kept the Spurs clean sheet intact with a great save. That allowed the brave Fantasy managers who captained Kieran Trippier (£6.2m) to collect a 14-point haul, thanks to a shut-out and a bonus point.

Warnock and Kane’s owners were dealt a blow in the 58th minute when Joe Ralls (£4.8m) was sent off for a foul on Moura. It was a wild and cynical challenge, which stopped a dangerous Spurs break, but was still 40-yards from the Cardiff goal. Naturally, Warnock was incensed by the decision, especially with Kane getting involved in the aftermath. His reaction earned the Spurs man a yellow card.

“I was disappointed. All afternoon there were plenty of busy people around him. He said it was a group decision. I don’t think Mike Dean needs earplugs to tell him what to do. He’s a top ref. I don’t think 15 white shirts around him helped.” – Neil Warnock

“(Kane) plays for England and is a top player, I love him, but I don’t think you should try and get other pros sent off. He’s the England captain for goodness sake. He didn’t need to do that. Just because Kane was having a poor game himself. He was determined to score today because we’re the only Premier League side he’s not scored against, but I thought our centre-backs handled him well.” – Neil Warnock

FPL midfielder Danny Ward (£4.5m) made another appearance as a striker, this time coming on for Paterson. However, he had to be substituted minutes later with a calf injury.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI (4-3-3): Lloris; Rose (Davies 88′), Sánchez, Alderweireld, Trippier; Winks, Dier, Sissoko (Wanyama 85′); Lucas, Kane, Son (Lamela 72′).

CARDIFF CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Etheridge, Bennett, Morrison, Bamba, Manga; Ralls, Arter; Hoilett, Camarasa, Hoilett (Harris 78′); Paterson (Ward 78′, Reid 84′).

At the moment it’s probably a replacement for Zaha.

Got 2FT so may look at replacing one of Holebas or PvA as well.

Candidates to replace Zaha at the moment are:
      Wilson
      Murray
      Jimenez

Looking at Harry Maguire for either PvA or Holebas.

    Guys on a WC currently
    Team 1
    Fab Patricio
    AWB, Doherty, TAA, Duffy, Alonso
    Fraser, Hazard, Richarlison, Maddison, Mane
    Mitro, Arnie Aguero

    Team 2
All are same except Firmino & Hojberg in place of Arnie & Fraser.

    Suggestions..
I don't really think Arnie & Fraser are bad options it's just that I want a Liverpool double up in attack with their schedule & also because I'm going Salah-less

I’m not a fan of points and pounds sat on the bench, your defenders are all strong and I think Hoj is a better prospect than some give him credit for so I recjon you’d be alright.

Actually, you're right. Hoj is currently starting & doesn't seem like he's gonna be losing his place any time soon. Thanks.
What are your opinions on a double up on Liverpool's defense instead of attack.?

When you are going to captain you want the best instead of two mid pieced players

True. Having those 2 instead of Salah leaves me with the conundrum of which one to captain coz both can have 12 points in 3-0 win & both can have 2 points in a similar kind of match. Salah just almost takes away that option of doubling up on Liverpool's attack. Maybe I'll buy Salah in a team if I double up on Liverpool's defense.

Every season though, there’s a Mahrez, Butland, Pope that pops up and I leave it way too late to get, for not having a spare FT and end up losing 50 odd points for the sake of 4. I know Mahrez is a bit too OTT but the point stands in getting him late. Plus he’s a winger scoring goals and getting CS points. And 5/8 cleanie shots in the next 8.

Doherty is a season keeper and will pay that -4 back over the next few weeks, maybe not immediately.

If you plan to keep him long term, I'd do it.

                  7 years, 4 months ago

Cheers mate, and all. If Bennett rises once (likely) and Doherty rises only once (unlikely) I can do it for free in gw10 anyway. But then I can’t get Salah in gw10. So a hit now means a clean slate in gw10.

He only has 1 goal and 2 assists.
Agree that he is a good option though.
                But definitely not a -4...

              Trying to fund Salah.

              Have two options:

Alonso > Gomez (doubling on Pool def)
              Moura > Knockaert

If I don't do either of those, I can get Mane instead of Salah.

I don't like Knockeart as an option myself. I definitely don't like the Gomez option as there is no attacking upside to him. If Gomez was TAA I would have gone with that.

I'm oddly attached to Moura. Hes still playing OoP up front for Spurs. But for a lack of decent finishing and a lack of good midfield suppliers, he could've had some great returns. I guess the fixtures swinging should doom him as an option though.

I can do like Shaw > Gomez next week to get x3 LPool for CAR I suppose.

Problem with that argument is that if the quality midfield had been there would he be playing?

Hasn't been rotated yet. Been playing decently well. Yeah, I think he'd still be in the team.

                      Kane
                      Alli Eriksen Moura

Think Son has looked off the boil and is best used off the bench.

Sigurdsson better value than Richarlison? The latter playing up top is obviously a big factor. On the other side Siggy is on set pieces and is doing better BAPS wise

Ricky playing up front and at that price makes it a no brainer for me. Sigurdsson is a tidy differential though for sure.

If eriksen is confirmed back for spurs next game I may be tempted to hang onto Kane for 1 more week even though I really regret bringing him in to begin with.

morning all, finally a green arrow after a while despite the kane captaincy. But def expecting that to turn into green given that i dont have hazard. Early thoughts on next gw?

was planning to WC this in gw10...right option?
                    Patricio Foster*
Alonso Robbo Shaw* Doherty -- Awb
Maddison Richarlison* Salah -- Stephens* Camarassa*
                    Kun Kane* King*
                    *players i would remove if i Wildcarded = 7.

some of my transfer options for gw9:
                    A: Shaw >> Morrison..one week punt till i WC
                    B: Something else

Looking at defence on a GW9 WC

                    - GK rotation of Fabianski and Patricio up to GW21 gives you: WAT bha BUR hud HUD car CAR CRY BOU WAT sou bur
                    - DEF rotation of Lascelles and AWB (both BAPS magnets) up to GW21 gives you: BHA sou WAT BOU bur WHU bha whu hud FUL CAR wat
                    - Doherty a standout option because of attacking returns and BAPS at his price point
                    - TAA a standout option because of attacking returns, plays for a top team and BAPS at his price point

Question then is which premium to get - Alonso, Mendy or Robertson. Any thoughts?

Nice insight. Don't think Lascelles worth 5m though. Yedlin perhaps one for me to consider..

I like Lascelles because of threat from corners plus BAPS potential. He is only 4.8m now too after price drops.

Alonso. Four home games in the next six, liable to get points at both ends, you’ve already got Liverpool covered with Trent and Mendy more likely to be rotated.

If you like that sort of thing then yes.

I hate rotating keepers because keepers are so random.

The games you think they’ll get cleanies in are often the ones they end up delivering a 2 pointer, whilst the guy you bench plays a blinder away from home and gets save points and baps.

I have Rui and Stek and happy to play Rui every week till I WC.

Alonso. Don’t see why Robbo should be choosen over any of the above mentioned:

Robbo only 2 assists and no goal. Last attacking point gw 4.

Have a word with him. Alright Moutinho's not the most exciting midfielder in the world but he does a great job for his team. Not everyone in this world is destined to be superstar in life and there's nothing wrong with being a small cog in a big machine. 😉
