Richard Clarke is among an elite core of managers who have topped our Hall of Fame, which is based on the career achievements of those in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues.

He achieved this momentous feat just last month and after since slipping to 11th spot he is keen to once again return to the summit and secure his ambition of being number one when the season ends.

In the latest in our Meet the Manager video series he reveals how he plans to see off the competition and discusses the strategies that have earned him such incredible success over his 12 previous campaigns.

With seven top 10,000 finishes, including last season’s 263rd and a 303rd rank in 2011/13, he is a competitor that cannot be underestimated. In fact, he is yet to have a poor season, with 2015/16’s end rank of 32,547th his ‘worst’ to date.

Richard (FPL team link here) discusses the importance of keeping tabs on elite managers and the season ticker. He also reveals how analysing probability can ensure managers make their own luck.

This season’s trends are also discussed, as he reveals which heavy hitter he is looking to shun on his upcoming Wildcard and how the tried and tested ‘eye-test’ let him down badly last weekend.

The chat with Richard is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Triggerlips, can be viewed here, while the second, featuring Philman, can be seen here. Last week’s episode, featuring Will Thomas, is available here.

Hi all. Need some help with the below please!

    Ryan
    Robbo-Boly-Luiz*
    Hughes*-Mané-Hazard-Fraser
    Wilson-Kun-Kane*
    [Foster-Cairney*-AwB-Chilwell]
    0.5 ITB, 2 FTs

Considering Luiz, Hughes and Kane >> Mendy, Knockaert and Firmino for a -4. Plan would then be to upgrade Cairney to Maddison for GW9. Thoughts!?

Solid plan, I've had Firmino from the off but starting to get frustrating...also, does not pass the eye. Plum fixtures though.

Thanks. I am on the fence re Firmino to be fair, but if he's going to click into gear any time surely it's in the next two!?
WC still available so if it's a disaster I'll be pulling the trigger!

Not really a fair comparison, but Alisson all day long if money is no object and you don't have any Liverpool defenders

What's the Consensus on TAA? Really want Robbo but 0.2 off getting him.

Saw these comments leading up the City game: LiverpoolFC website.

I get the tactical reasons dropping him, but will his head be right after being dropped for his "dream" game?

"Alexander-Arnold bids farewell to his teens as he turns 20 today and is delighted to mark the occasion with a tussle against the defending champions.

“It’s a dream come true [to play in a game like this],” he adds. “You want to play in them all the time, play as many of them as you can and test yourself against the best players.

“You want to go toe-to-toe with the best and try to be the best yourself. To be the best you have to beat the best – and City are the champions.”

defo Arnie...but torn between mitro and Wilson...Mitro the better striker but Bmouth the better team.

Fulham will have a lot of games where they dont create much and mitro is frustrated, whereas i see Bmouth creating against anyone really, so does that make Wilson the better FPL option for this season?

Do we actually think TAA is first choice? Lovren back now and kept a CS against city, and Gomez has obviously played much better than TAA so far this year

Who is the best to pair up with Robertson? Are you considering a double in defence?

As a TAA owner Im worried and been saying it since Sunday evening, but most here thinks he will start the next two because he is better attacking wise than Gomez; and Pool face two poor sides in next two (as u know).

      Im still not 100% convinced

Putting Gomez up against sterling was a big shout, so I don't buy into the theory that TAA was just rested. PLUS TAA on 3 yellow cards so probably best avoided for now

Not get TAA now seems like sound advice but what if you already own him, but not Robbo?

TAA out Robbo IN = waste of a FT or not?

        Im hesitating between... (2.5 itb)

        A. TAA to Robbo (and start Ings vs bou)

        B. Pereira to Robbo (and bench Ings in order to start both Pool defs).

        What would u do?

I think Klopp will see it as deterimental to TAA's development as a rb and Gomez' development as a CB to play lovren and Gomez at RB.

TAA will probably keep his spot against lower sides, and will start big games once he has developed enough defensively and until then Gomez will probably start in his place - but only against the bigger sides.

TAA is first choice. I have absolutely no doubt about that. Gomez has developed a lot as CB, not as a RB. He makes mistakes out wide that you rarely see in the centre. Lovren and Matip have been rather injury prone in recent history, so I don't see Gomez get shifted out as a 3rd right back when Liverpool really needs 4 available CBs at all time. There's also not much time for Klopp to instruct his players in the coming months. Having clearly defined roles makes it easier for players to rotate.

      1. Ruth_NZ

And Clyne? He is suddenly a rubbish player?

I wasn't even sure that TAA was an assured starter before last weekend. I'm even less confident of it now. And that's a shame because he'd be my next transfer in if he was.

I think its a better move to go with 2 from liverpool defence than 2 from attack. Very solid in defence + probably attacking returns. For now I am on Robbo + Mane but considering buying TAA/Gomes for Trippier after his WHU game

          He’s 4m. Name a better bench fodder.

If you replace AWB with TAA, you’ll have Alonso, Mendy, Doherty, Robertson and TAA. That’s a massive benching headache unless you’re playing 5 at the back.

TAA still first choice as he offers much more going forwards than Gomez at right back. Klopp wanted to set up a little safer against City imo.

Double up has potential but it's hard to fit in other exciting players like Doherty, Mendy and Alonso unless you are willing to play 4 at the back at times.

Nah, TAA is cheap. He doesn't have to be nailed to be good value. He's more nailed now than he was before GW1. In my mind, anyway. And I had him from GW1. If he doesn't play, I won't get 0 points.

    15. The Rumour Mill

I think TAA is first choice. He was poor and fatigued against Napoli though and with City's left flank being their most attacking side Klopp probably wanted to sure that side up defensively. If TAA plays reduced minutes/or even not at all for England then I'm sure he will have recovered and be fine to play the next few.

I think against sides who don't offer much in attack (like the next 2 sides they're facing) Klopp will prefer to play TAA who can create and attack a lot more than Gomez can. With Milner being out for 4 weeks Liverpool will probably also need a set piece taker on the pitch, assuming Shaqiri is not on the field.

I'm not a TAA owner, but if I were I wouldnt be too worried. Think the TAA benching against City was purely about a more defensive tactic and there is not much more in it. Sure, the odd benching can happen but think he's clearly first choice RB.

On my WC and have been trying to make a double up work but can't find a way:

      - Mendy and Alonso are keepers imo. Don't fancy a double up on Liverpool defence at either of their expense.

      - As I try to maximise funds for rest of WC team, I think Bennet and AWB offer too good a value to ignore. Also even more expensive defenders like Doherty.

      - That leaves one Liverpool defender spot. Want Robbo, but that 1 million does so much more for the rest of my team [Patricio instead of 4.0 keeper and Knockerheart/Fraser instead of Kenedy/Brooks for example as 4th mid]. Therefore currently set on TAA. Happy with whichever out of Bennet or AWB coming on if rotated. Highly unlikely to play 1 minute cameo form what I've seen.

Hope by brain dump is helpful for your thinking.

strong case for just 2 premiums and Doherty & TAA.
Can comfortably go 3-4-3 or 4 at the back.
Ideal world it would be Robbo over TAA but the extra million is attractive for bolstering front line. Wolves defender covering TAA occasional benching not a disaster,
Have Alonso but not convinced he's worth the money based on last few GWs. Could easily become Mendy or Robertson.

VVD is a bit overated for FPL. scores the odd goal and doesn't assist so relies mostly on CS.

I'm considering a Liverpool defensive double up have Robbo and Mane atm and I'm considering going S.Cook to lovren. Have exact money itb and a ft for it. I think he's likely to play in the league games but even if he is rotated he's cheap enough and a secondary option anyway. The other option is to go Kane to Kamara, Guendozi to Salah for a -4 and double up on attack.

      1. Rostah
        • 11 Years

I'm thinking an attacking double up could be the ticket alrite. Now that Liverpools fixtures have taken a big turn is their front 3 can start performing again I'll be putting my funds in that direction and sticking with Robbo in D.

        1. Alpharius
          • 7 Years

Yea I m leaning that way, rotation worries for TAA/Lovren/Gomez aside there's always a chance they could concede a silly goal and the attackers ceilings are higher. II guess it's just money vs other attacking options that could constrain that choice

    21. XabiAlonso
      • 10 Years

Not sure if I will double up at the back but if I was it would be Robertson and van dijk/Allison.

    22. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

Not for me, because there's decent value in Doherty and Jonny, which I don't feel the need to bench.

I have bought TAA already this week to allow me to bench the Wolves defenders in poor fixtures, but doubling up with Robbo would mean benching a Wolves defender every week, who would otherwise "cover" a good portion of Robbo's points. For others, it could mean even more money (and points) on the bench than that.

If I was looking to move away from the Wolves defence, and a single premium defender (currently Alonso), I would certainly consider Robbo or Mendy, and I'm sure I will in a few gameweeks - consider it, at least.

As always, though, questions like this depend on the rest of your team, and each team is different. For a team which needs 2 or more premium options, along with TAA, I don't see anything wrong with it. I think Robertson would be my second choice, after Mendy, at the moment, though I'll stick with Alonso to the time being, as that could flip flop all season.

First choice back four is TAA VVD Gomez Robertson. But with easier games coming it is not a push to imagine Klopp giving Robertson a rest in one game, then TAA a rest, then Gomez a rest. Especially if all four get significant international game time the next week. IMO VVD is the least likely to be rested, but not totally safe.

They are playing the 3 worst defense in the next 4 games. I am more tempted to double the attack

I'm not sure about the double up despite the great fixtures + form but TAA is 100% first choice Gomez is not going to play RB this season and if he does it will be in the very few and far between tough game so I think TAA is still a really good option.

Is Robertson worth the 1.1 over TAA? Would prefer to get Robbo due to naildness but if I do it blocks my road to Salah. Here's my plan..

    Hennessey, Hamer
    Alonso, VVD, Doherty, WanB, Bennett
    Haz, Moura, Maddison, Rich, Fraser
    Kane, Kun, Mitro

Kane, Moura, WanB > Arnie, 4.3, TAA (-4)

Would allow me to do Fraser > Salah in time for Cardiff or Fraser > KDB/Sterling and some change to spend elsewhere should I decide to go Salahless.

    Good morning!
Except from Sterling and until Kdb returns who is the best ManCity mid option?BSilva playing well but i don't think he is such a good fpl option. With Mendy back,Sane will be rotated.Mahrez is a rotation risk,so the only decent option is DSilva?

    1. MTPockets
      7 years, 9 months ago

      Bernardo seems most nailed.

    2. Lord Bendtner
      • 8 Years

With KDB return B.Silva is more subject to rotation.

Sterling will play on the left with Mendy (cause Guardiola avoids Sane/Mendy)
Sane will play less & Mahrez will play more because of Sterling moving to the left.
      B. Silva was 'more nailed' because when KDB was out he was rotated between CM & RW, now that KDB is back i'm afraid he will play less because he will only compete for RW with Mahrez

That's only my opinion but he was clearly rotated between CM & RW when KDB was out
What do you guys think ?

      1. Old Wulfrunian

      2. MTPockets
        7 years, 9 months ago

Really not sure but that summary's why I'm avoiding all their mids except KDB when fit.
A lot comes down to the Mendy+Sane issue and whether Pep will make that work. I'll wait to find out.

Little help here guys. My current team is
    Patricio
    TAA, Alonso, Trippier.
    Hazard, Richarlison, Madders, Fraser
    Kun, Wilson, Mitro.
    (Fab. AWB, Bennett, hojberg.)
Is there anything that needs to be changed to possibly better long term options? 7.2 itb and losing ground in mini league.
Considering Mitro to Arnie later on but Fraser to Salah for -4 this week and Salah to Kdb after he starts a league game.

Terribly scared of this as most rivals in ML don’t have pool cover currently and in a way could make them differentials. But do I take the risk and get Salah in after Huddersfield to avoid a hit or risk it all in case Salah does a “Kane” and doesn’t score against Cardiff is my main dilemma

Same dilemma. I think I'm ruling out Ryan. While Brighton have the best fixtures short term, it could get very sticky from GW17 onwards and I think they will keep the fewest clean sheets of the three teams.

On Rui P and R Bennett double up as it stands.

He’s got Doherty, does he really need Bennett? Maybe do something bout firmino? lots of mid priced forwards raking up points.

True, Mitro/Arnie are decent options. I'm giving firmino 2 chances to keep his spot with those lovely fixtures. Once KdB is back i need to gain 0.5 somewhere so he might be the one to go. Or maybe i'm downgrading Alonso

I like Bennett more in the short term too. But i got AWB from the start so i think i can hold onto him for his horrendous fixtures. Benching him with Jiménez/Doherty or Knockaert most of the time.

    Ryan, Fabianski
    Boly, Robertson, Mendy, Wan-Bissaka, Shaw
    Maddison, Salah, Hazard, Fraser, Stephens
    Arni, Ageuro, Mitrovic,

    Thinking,
    Shaw > Duffy
    Maddison > KDB
    Fraser > Jorginho

Ah - you want the newly released KJ chip (Knee Jerk) - rules are:

      - Chip can only be played once
      - Top 2 highest scoring players from the last GW in each position will be automatically brought in and the remainder auto-picked to meet the budget
      - You will be stuck with your Knee Jerk picks with no ability to take back the decision. Any built up TV will be lost

I can imagine this will be very popular around here ....

For me getting Salah is essential, Wilson has 2 lovely fixtures tho

Salah is essential, I wildcarded him out 2 weeks back for Kane, knowing full well the swap back would be happening regardless

If he’s not starting the occasional game then he’s not nailed, what’s your point?

I would not go for wilson if you think longterm.... Maybe Murray instead? or if you can afford Arnie?

    Few decisions with 2FT

    Hart, Bettinelli
    Alonso, Tripper, TAA, Doherty, WB
    Hazard, Richarlson, Fraser, Knockhaert, Ward
    Aguero, Kane, Mitrovic

    What's the best option?
    A) Fraser,Kane>Salah,Arnie
    B) Fraser,Kane,Trippier>Salah,Vardy,Duffy -4
    C) Fraser,Kane,Trippier>Salah,Laca,Diop -4
    D) Something Else

I’m in a simulation predicament, only differnce is I have Maddison/robbo instead of your Knock/TAA

I need Salah this week regardless, then I really like the look of Vardy, but I can't have him without taking a -4 by losing Trippier. Not sure I want to settle on Arnie just because that's who I can afford.

Aguero not frustrating you also? I’m thinking of shifting to sterling somehow also, fear Kane could do well also against West Ham, his away form is impressive.

Aguero is frustrating but doing enough for me atm to make me worry about other players in my team first. When KDB is back I could quite easily look at bringing him instead.

    I can do Stephens/Kane >> Hazard/Jimenez (-4) to get the following team for gw9:

    Patricio -- Foster
    Alonso • Robbo • Doherty • Shaw --- Awb*
    Salah • Rich • Maddison • Hazard -- Camarassa
    Kun • King • Jimnez

    - Looks decent..covers most bases but i dont like my strikers (king/jimenez)..would prefer arnie/mitro
    - Dont particularly like taking a hit to bring in hazard over kane who on paper has an easier fixture esp as i wont captain hazard
    - will WC in gw14/15

Alternatively, i could keep Kane in gw9 and wildcard in gw10 to bring in haz, arnie, mitro etc. see below potential gw10 WC team
    Ryan • Fabianski
    Alonso • TAA • Doherty • Yedlin • AWB
    Salah • Hazard • Maddison • Knockart • Hojberg
    Arnie • Mitro • Kun
