Squads among the top 10,000 bracket of Fantasy Premier League managers changed a little for Gameweek 9.

The international break triggered 4.4% of Wildcards at that level of the overall rankings. This was more than double the figure from any of the previous three Gameweeks.

In this article, we will highlight the differences between the choices made by Wildcarders and the rest of managers, also discussing the effect of injury news during the break.

As expected, the Wildcard chip is the only one that has significant usage this week.

This leads to a cumulative percentage of managers in the top 10k who already used the chip to 73.7%, a number that is particularly high considering we are only almost half-way through the first Wildcard usage window.

The overall cumulative percentage of Wildcarders is much lower, 35.4% and we could see significant changes in the top10k fabric if the Wildcards that are to be used in the next few weeks make a big difference.

Most Popular Players

Next, we look at the most common picks of the Gameweek 9 Wildcards vs the total picks of the top 10k.

Most of the Wildcard picks actually explain themselves. The two cheap goalkeepers Rui Patricio and Lukasz Fabianski dominate the Wildcards selection.

In defense, the interest in the in-form Matt Doherty and the returning  Benjamin Mendy is the main focus point. While they are in 72.4%, 69.2% of Wildcard teams respectively, their ownership in the top 10k reside at just 50.4% and 26.1%.

Meanwhile, it seems like Marcos Alonso and Kieran Trippier are the main fall guys.

On the other hand, midfield and attack options look very similar. The only exception is the shy appearance  of Raheem Sterling in 39% of Wildcards while it was Ryan Fraser’s position in the rest of the top 10k.

Speaking of which, the Bournemouth man, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were the most popular picks that had injuries over the international break.

While Fraser had 42.6% top 10k ownership last week, the number only slightly dropped to 41.8% indicating that only 0.8% managers decided to sell him this week based on his injury concerns.

However, not all who kept him actually had him in the starting XI.

In fact, Fraser’s percentage in started top 10k teams is only 33.85% meaning that around 8% of managers have him on the bench this week.

Meanwhile, Salah and Mane switched places again for top 10k ownership. Salah now leads with 34.1% as opposed to 31.4% for Mane. The Egyptian has an even higher effective ownership since 6.7% of top 10k managers actually gave him the armband this week.

The other top captaincy choices this week are the very popular option of Sergio Aguero (67.2%) and Eden Hazard (7.2%). Other differential captains were Sterling (5.97%), Harry Kane (4.28%) and Alexandre Lacazette (3.5%).

It looks like so far this season, most of the obvious captaincy choices delivered and Aguero continued this pattern today.

Also, as the most owned players in the top 10k have been more or less the same the past few weeks, it can still be hard to beat the template with differential picks or captains. But this could all change.

    Should I wildcard this team?

You could possibly get away with some carefully planned hits. This week I’d get rid of Cedric. Major changes after that would be Trippier and Kane our for Mendy and Aguero or Lacazette. Then Murray to Mitro or Wilson. Your mid is fine.

Doherty stands out. Or.... go rogue and pick up Holebas - gets forward loads, back from suspension and rested, team playing well and good fixtures.

Team is not that bad, keep the card for the next IB and take a hit if you thin you need to I reckon. Kane to Aguero and use the cash for Mendy would look pretty good.

    Bottomed...

Bench Mendy over Bennet? And captain Salah over Hazard? Something entirely different? Could bench one of Wilson / Fraser I guess?

    Hennessy, Hamer
    Robertson, Alonso, Mendy, Bennet, AWB

      A + B

Robertson has form and the best fixtures so he's #1.

Mendy looks a better option than Alonso but with Chelsea facing bur, CPL and EVE next I think they're close enough that I'd only make the swap if I had no other issues.

A, B then C but Che have had Man U and Liv in the past 3, next 6 include the 5 of Burnley, Palace, Everton, Wolves, Fulham. Alonso could easily match the others so all great options and not worth taking a hit to change one for the another.

Close to WC'ing but may hold on with 2 ft's.

    1. Kane + Knock -> Vardy + Maddison.
    2. Kane + Ings-> Vardy + Arnie.
    3. Other (prob need some City assets in the mix but may wait for WC).

    Foster.
    Robbo, Alonso, Trippier.
    Hazard, Knockaert, Salah, Rich.
    Kane, Mitro, Ings.

    Patricio, AWB, CHO, Peltier.

I think so - the risk with a broken bone (even in a cast) is that it is at a high risk of displacement in the first 1-2 weeks.

I imagine there will be clarity given by Klopp afterwards

In a similar boat and still with WC. (8 players).
See my team above a few posts..

I'd prob try to keep the WC for another couple of weeks. Citys fixtures are better and we ll have a slightly better idea the preferred line up with KDB back to full fitness. Fixtures turn for a few clubs.. arsenal/spurs around GW 14/15 too.

See how Mane is and if it's looking good- Keep.

Any Liverpool fans on here who care to give some insight into who are the likely starters between Lovren, Gomez and TAA. From what I can tell, since Lovren has returned from injury he’s reclaimed his center back role forcing Gomez to right back and TAA to the bench. Is this a settled back 4? If so Lovren looks like a cheap way into that defence at 4.9. Also, in the two games he’s played he’s got max bonus points both times.

he could rotate TAA/Gomez/Lovren, or it could be settled. No-one knows - I'm starting to worry that it's probably pretty settled, as in that's his preferred lineup. CL might give more clues.

Yeah will be interesting to see the CL lineup. The more I think about it Lovren seems like a great punt at 4.9. At that price I can take the occasional rotation

    2A) Robbo + Mendy + King
    2B) Robbo + Ings + Arnie

De Gea Tomkins Mane Zaha to Dubravka TAA Sterling Arnie(-8)

    My team for GW10 is:

    Dubravka
    Walker Robbo TAA Alonso
    Hazard(C) Richa Fraser Sterling
    Arnie Aguero

    Subs: Hamer, WanB, Hughes, Kamara

I know its risky but If I make Walker Sterling to Duffy Salah for a hit... it could again hit back in the coming Gameweeks... thoughts please?

    The big question.
    Long term: Robertson or Mendy?

Mendy for the periods of time he is fit is scary.

Robertson. Clean sheet returns are very fixture orientated and he has the better fixtures.

Robbo is more dependable but Mendy is better if you have decent cover

    How does Dilva + Alonso —> Salah (C) + Chilwell (-4) look?

Need to generate at least .7 to make the swap

    Trippier & Kane >>> Robertson & Arnie for -4.

    Yay or nay?

Gomez playing in 2 positions, Klopp trying to get him in the team

just wondering if Isaac Success could actually be a thing, at worst he's a bench option in a 442...which do you prefer:
    a) Aguero + Success + Mendy
    b) Vardy + Mitro + Mendy

With KDB returning, do you think Bilva will keep his spot, forcing Dilva to the bench?

Everyone in that midfield gets a bit more rest, squad approach as seen today with Sterling

      Think they'll all just rotate.

I think they'll both get rotated enough to put me off. Beyond that I couldn't even begin to guess what Pep has in mind.

DSilva and KdB first choice as 8’s. Bilva can play in several roles. Would drop Bilva now, if I owned him. DSilva’s game time might be managed, not getting any younger.

Ranked top 500, my highest ever. Do you be bold in this position and try to move up or just try and grind it out?

Depends how you came there. If you have taken risks so far, continue to play that way.

I've been pretty conservative this year as had a good start, no hits and trying not to kneejerk. Was looking to change formation from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3..downgrade Fraser to upgrade Ings to Arnie. Fraser's fixtures get a bit tougher after Ful.

45 with Maddison and Richarlison to go. Jumped from 12 to 7k. Will I be higher or lower by the end of the gw?

Similar I'd say, many also have those two but some benched Maddison

Taa didn't play for many who have maddison on the bench

Looking for some more opinions on this-

If you just had to drop one off Maddison or Richarlison for Salah , who would it be? Fixtures say drop Richa however he is playing oop.. so confused

    1. MTPockets
      7 years, 9 months ago

Probably Maddison, but games to come might help decide.

Hard to move from Madd with his fixtures, if you've kept Salah this long no way do you sell before Cardiff. So it's got to be Rich but personally I'd keep all 3.
